Abstract:The heavy element content ("metallicity") of the Universe is a record of the total star formation history. Gas-phase metallicity in galaxies, as well as its evolution with time, is of particular interest as a tracer of accretion and outflow processes. However, metallicities from the widely-used electron temperature ($T_e$) method are typically ~2x lower than the values based on the recombination line method. This "abundance discrepancy factor" (ADF) is well known and is commonly ascribed to bias due to temperature fluctuations. We present a measurement of oxygen abundance in the nearby (3.4 Mpc) system, Mrk 71, using a combination of optical and far-IR emission lines to measure and correct for temperature fluctuation effects. Our far-IR result is inconsistent ($> 2 \sigma$ significance) with the metallicity from recombination lines and instead indicates little to no bias in the standard $T_e$ method, ruling out the long-standing hypothesis that the ADF is explained by temperature fluctuations for this object. Our results provide a framework to accurately measure metallicity across cosmic history, including with recent data reaching within the first billion years with JWST and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA).

Abstract:In a very recent work, [1] claim that the scenario of temperature inhomogeneities proposed by [2] ($t2$ > 0) is not able to explain the O$^{2+}$/H$^{+}$ abundance discrepancy observed between the calculations based on the optical [OIII] collisional excited lines (CELs) and the OII recombination lines (RLs) in the star forming galaxy Mrk71. In this work, we show that conclusions of [1] depend on several assumptions on the absolute flux calibration, reddening correction and the adopted electron density. In fact, using the data of [1] in a different way and even considering their 1{\sigma} uncertainties, it is possible to reach the opposite conclusion, consistent with $t2$ = $0.097 ^{+0.008}_{-0.009}$. Therefore, the existence of temperature inhomogeneities causing the O$^{2+}$/H$^{+}$ abundance discrepancy in Mrk71 can not be ruled out.

Abstract:The relationships between stellar mass, gas-phase metallicity and star formation rate (i.e. the Mass-Metallicity, MZR, and the Fundamental Metallcity Relation, FMR) in the local Universe are revisited by fully anchoring the metallicity determination for SDSS galaxies on the Te abundance scale defined exploiting the strong-line metallicity calibrations presented in Curti et al. (2017). Self-consistent metallicity measurements allow a more unbiased assessment of the scaling relations involving M, Z and SFR, which provide powerful constraints for the chemical evolution models. We parametrise the MZR with a new functional form which allows us to better characterise the turnover mass. The slope and saturation metallicity are in good agreement with previous determinations of the MZR based on the Te method, while showing significantly lower normalisation compared to those based on photoionisation models. The Z- SFR dependence at fixed stellar mass is also investigated, being particularly evident for highly star forming galaxies, where the scatter in metallicity is reduced up to a factor of ~30%. A new parametrisation of the FMR is given by explicitly introducing the SFR-dependence of the turnover mass into the MZR. The residual scatter in metallicity for the global galaxy population around the new FMR is 0.054 dex. The new FMR presented in this work represents a useful local benchmark to compare theoretical predictions and observational studies (of both local and high-redshift galaxies) whose metallicity measurements are tied to the abundance scale defined by the Te method, hence allowing to properly assess its evolution with cosmic time.

Abstract:We aim to investigate the influences on the evolution of the fundamental metallicity relation of different selection criteria. We used $5\,487$ star-forming galaxies at a median redshift of $z 0.63$ extracted from the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) and $143\,774$ comparison galaxies in the local Universe from the GALEX-SDSS-WISE Legacy Catalog. We employed two families of methods: parametric and nonparametric. In the parametric approaches, we compared the fundamental metallicity relation projections plagued by observational biases on differently constructed control samples at various redshifts. Then, we compare the metallicity difference between different redshifts in stellar mass-star formation rate bins. In the nonparametric approach, we related the metallicity and the normalized specific star formation rate (sSFR). To compare galaxies with the same physical properties, we normalized the sSFR of our samples according to the median value at median redshift $z 0.09$. Then, the galaxies with the same distance from the star-forming main sequence at their respective redshifts were compared when the sSFR is normalized according to the expected values from their respective star-forming main sequences. The methodologies implemented to construct fair, complete samples for studying the mass-metallicity relation and the fundamental metallicity relation produced consistent results showing a small but still statistically significant evolution of both relations up to $z 0.63$. In particular, we observed a systematic trend where the median metallicity of the sample at $z=0.63$ is lower than that of the local sample at the same stellar mass and star formation rate. The average difference in the metallicity of the low and intermediate redshifts is approximately $1.8$ times the metallicity standard deviation of the median of the intermediate redshift sample in stellar mass-star formation rate bins. We confirmed this result using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. When we applied the stellar mass-completeness criterion to catalogs, the metallicity difference in redshifts decreased to approximately $0.96$ times the metallicity standard deviation of the median, and thus it was not statistically significant. The limited area of the FMR surface explored once the stellar mass-completeness criterion is applied might dominate this difference reduction, leaving out the area where the difference between the two samples is the highest. A careful reading of the results and their underlying selection criteria is crucial in studies of the mass-metallicity and fundamental metallicity relations. When studying the mass-metallicity and fundamental metallicity relations, we recommend using the nonparametric approach, which provides similar results compared to parametric prescriptions, is easier to use, and is clear to interpret. The nonparametric methodology provides a convenient way to compare physical properties, with a smaller impact on observational selection biases.

Abstract:Based on an exteded grid of NLTE, line blanketed model atmospheres with stellar winds as calculated by means of FASTWIND, we have investigated the change in the strengths of strategic Helium transitions in the optical as caused by a 0.3 decrease in metallicity with respect to solar abundances. Our calculations predict that only part of the observed increase in Teff, of O-type dwarfs could be explained by metallicity effects on the spectral type indicators, while the rest must be attributed to other reasons (e.g., different stellar structures as a function of metallicity or differences between observed and theoretical wind parameters etc.). In addition, we found that using the He II 4686 line to classify stars in low metallicity environments (Z < 0.3 solar) might artificially increase the number of low luminosity (dwarfs and giants) O-stars, on the expense of the number of O-supergiants.

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between stellar mass, metallicity and gas content for a magnitude- and volume-limited sample of 260 nearby late-type galaxies in different environments, from isolated galaxies to Virgo cluster members. We derive oxygen abundance estimates using new integrated, drift-scan optical spectroscopy and the base metallicity calibrations of Kewley & Ellison (2008). Combining these measurements with ultraviolet to near-infrared photometry and HI 21 cm line observations, we examine the relations between stellar mass, metallicity, gas mass fraction and star formation rate. We find that, at fixed stellar mass, galaxies with lower gas fractions typically also possess higher oxygen abundances. We also observe a relationship between gas fraction and metal content, whereby gas-poor galaxies are typically more metal-rich, and demonstrate that the removal of gas from the outskirts of spirals increases the observed average metallicity by approximately 0.1 dex. Although some cluster galaxies are gas-deficient objects, statistically the stellar-mass metallicity relation is nearly invariant to the environment, in agreement with recent studies. These results indicate that internal evolutionary processes, rather than environmental effects, play a key role in shaping the stellar mass-metallicity relation. In addition, we present metallicity estimates based on observations of 478 nearby galaxies.

Abstract:We present a new suite of numerical simulations of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM) in galactic disks using the TIGRESS-NCR framework. Distinctive aspects of our simulation suite are (1) sophisticated and comprehensive numerical treatments of essential physical processes including magnetohydrodynamics, self-gravity, and galactic differential rotation, as well as photochemistry, cooling, and heating coupled with direct ray-tracing UV radiation transfer and resolved supernova feedback and (2) wide parameter coverage including the variation in metallicity over Z ′ ≡ Z / Z ⊙ ∼ 0.1 - 3 , gas surface density Σ gas ∼ 5–150 M ⊙ pc −2 , and stellar surface density Σ star ∼ 1–50 M ⊙ pc −2 . The range of emergent star formation rate surface density is Σ SFR ∼ 10 −4 –0.5 M ⊙ kpc −2 yr −1 , and ISM total midplane pressure is P tot /k B = 10 3 –10 6 cm −3 K, with P tot equal to the ISM weight W . For given Σ gas and Σ star , we find Σ SFR ∝ Z ′ 0.3 . We provide an interpretation based on the pressure-regulated feedback-modulated (PRFM) star formation theory. The total midplane pressure consists of thermal, turbulent, and magnetic stresses. We characterize feedback modulation in terms of the yield Υ, defined as the ratio of each stress to Σ SFR . The thermal feedback yield varies sensitively with both weight and metallicity as Υ th ∝ W − 0.46 Z ′ − 0.53 , while the combined turbulent and magnetic feedback yield shows weaker dependence Υ turb + mag ∝ W − 0.22 Z ′ − 0.18 . Abstract:Metallicity offers a unique window into the baryonic history of the cosmos, being instrumental in probing evolutionary processes in galaxies between different cosmic environments. We aim to quantify the contribution of these environments to the scatter in the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of galaxies. By analysing the galaxy distribution within the cosmic skeleton of the Horizon Run 5 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation at redshift $z = 0.625$, computed using a careful calibration of the T-ReX filament finder, we identify galaxies within three main environments: nodes, filaments and voids. We also classify galaxies based on the dynamical state of the clusters and the length of the filaments in which they reside. We find that the cosmic environment significantly contributes to the scatter in the MZR; in particular, both the gas metallicity and its average relative standard deviation increase when considering denser large-scale environments. The difference in the average metallicity between galaxies within relaxed and unrelaxed clusters is $\approx 0.1 \text{ dex}$, with both populations displaying positive residuals, $\delta Z_{g}$, from the averaged MZR. Moreover, the difference in metallicity between node and void galaxies accounts for $\approx 0.14 \, \text{dex}$ in the scatter of the MZR at stellar mass $M_{\star} \approx 10^{9.35}\,\text{M}_{\odot}$. Finally, both the average [O/Fe] in the gas and the galaxy gas fraction decrease when moving to higher large-scale densities in the simulation, suggesting that the cores of cosmic environments host, on average, older and more massive galaxies, whose enrichment is affected by a larger number of Type Ia Supernova events.

Abstract:The gas-phase metallicity of galaxies is regulated by multiple astrophysical processes, which makes it a crucial diagnostic of galaxy formation and evolution. Beyond the fundamental mass-metallicity relation, a debate about the secondary galaxy property to predict the metallicity of galaxies arises. Motivated by this, we systematically examine the relationship between gas-phase metallicity and other galaxy properties, i.e. star formation rate (SFR) and galaxy size, in addition to stellar mass in both observation and simulation. We utilize the data from the MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) survey and the TNG50 simulations. We find that the combination of $M_*/R_{\rm e}^\beta$ with $\beta\sim 0.6-1$ is in much stronger correlation to the metallicity than stellar mass alone, regardless of whether the SFR is included or not, in both observation and simulation. This indicates that galaxy size plays a more important role in determining gas-phase metallicity of galaxies than SFR. In addition, the TNG simulation predicts that the SFR, although being a subdominant role, becomes increasingly important in high-$z$ universe. Finally, we speculate that SFR modulates metallicity on the temporal dimension, synchronized with time-varying gas inflows, and galaxy size regulates metallicity on the spatial dimension by affecting the gravitational potential and the mass loading factor.

Benchmarking the effective temperature scale of red giant branch stellar models: the case of the metal-poor halo giant HD 122563

Abstract:There is plenty of evidence in the literature of significant discrepancies between the observations and models of metal-poor red giant branch stars, in particular regarding the effective temperature scale. We revisit the benchmark star HD\,122563 using the most recent observations from Data Release 3, to investigate if these new constraints may help in resolving this discrepancy. We review the most recent spectroscopic determinations of the metallicity Fe/H of HD\,122563, and provide a new assessment of its fundamental parameters, specifically, bolometric luminosity surface gravity, plus a photometric determination of its metal content. Using these constraints, we compare the position of the star in the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram with various recent sets of stellar evolution tracks. The H-R diagram analysis reveals a significant disagreement between observed and theoretical values, when adopting the most recent spectroscopic estimate of Fe/H . On the other hand, by using the photometric determination of Fe/H some of the selected sets of stellar tracks appear in fair agreement with observations. The sets with discrepant can be made to agree with observations either by modifying the prescription adopted to calculate the models' outer boundary conditions, and/or by reducing the adopted value of the mixing length parameter with respect to the solar-calibration. A definitive assessment of whether the scale of metal-poor stellar red giant branch models is consistent with observations requires a more robust determination of the fundamental parameters of HD 122563 and also a larger sample of calibrators. From the theoretical side, it is crucial to minimise the current uncertainties in the treatment (boundary conditions, temperature gradient) of the outer layers of stellar models with convective envelopes.

Unveiling the Cosmic Chemistry: Revisiting the Mass-Metallicity Relation with JWST/NIRSpec at 4 < z < 10

Abstract:We present star formation rates (SFR), the mass-metallicity relation (MZR), and the SFR-dependent MZR across redshifts 4 to 10 using 81 star-forming galaxies observed by the JWST NIRSpec employing both low-resolution PRISM and medium-resolution gratings, including galaxies from the JADES GOODS-N and GOODS-S fields, the JWST-PRIMAL Legacy Survey, and additional galaxies from the literature in Abell 2744, SMACS-0723, RXJ2129, BDF, COSMOS, and MACS1149 fields. These galaxies span a 3 dex stellar mass range of $10^7 < M_{\ast}/M_{\odot} < 10^{10}$, with an average SFR of $7.2 \pm 1.2 M_{\odot} {\rm yr}^{-1}$ and an average metallicity of $12+{\rm log(O/H)} = 7.91 \pm 0.08$. Our findings align with previous observations up to $z=8$ for the MZR and indicate no deviation from local universe FMR up to this redshift. Beyond $z=8$, we observe a significant deviation $\sim 0.27$ dex) in FMR, consistent with recent JWST findings. We also integrate CEERS (135 galaxies) and JADES (47 galaxies) samples with our data to study metallicity evolution with redshift in a combined sample of 263 galaxies, revealing a decreasing metallicity trend with a slope of $0.067 \pm 0.013$, consistent with IllustrisTNG and EAGLE, but contradicts with FIRE simulations. We introduce an empirical mass-metallicity-redshift (MZ-$z$ relation): $12+{\rm log(O/H)}=6.29 + 0.237 \times{\rm log}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}) - 0.06 \times (1+z)$, which accurately reproduces the observed trends in metallicity with both redshift and stellar mass. This trend underscores the ``Grand Challenge'' in understanding the factors driving high-redshift galactic metallicity trends, such as inflow, outflow, and AGN/stellar feedback -- and emphasizes the need for further investigations with larger samples and enhanced simulations.

Abstract:Recent work suggested that the variation of the initial mass function (IMF) of stars depends on the physical conditions, notably, the metallicity and gas density. We investigated the properties of two clusters, namely the main cluster (MC) and the subcluster (SC), in the low-metallicity HII region Sh 2-209 (S209) based on recently derived IMFs. We tested three previously published correlations using previous observations: the top-heaviness of the IMF in dependence on metallicity, the half-mass radius, and the most massive star in dependence on the stellar mass of the embedded clusters. For this region, two different galactocentric distances, namely 10.5 kpc and 18 kpc, were considered, where an age-distance-degeneracy was found for the previously determined IMF to be consistent with other formulated metallicity and density dependent IMFs. The determined half-mass radius (0.080 +/- 0.005) pc and the embedded cluster density (0.2 +/- 0.1) 10^6 Msun pc^-3 for the MC with an age of 0.5 Myr in S209 assuming a galactocentric distance of 18 kpc support the assumption that a low-metallicity environment results in a denser cluster, which leads to a top-heavy IMF. Thus, all three tests are consistent with the previously published correlations. The results for S209 are placed in the context with the IMF determination within the metal-poor cluster in the star-forming region NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud.

Abstract:We present K band spectra for 133 nearby (d < 33 parsecs) M dwarfs, including 18 M dwarfs with reliable metallicity estimates (as inferred from an FGK type companion), 11 M dwarf planet hosts, more than 2/3 of the M dwarfs in the Northern 8 pc sample, and several M dwarfs from the LSPM catalog. From these spectra, we measure equivalent widths of the Ca and Na lines, and a spectral index quantifying the absorption due to H2O opacity (the H2O-K2 index). Using empirical spectral types standards and synthetic models, we calibrate the H2O-K2 index as an indicator of an M dwarf's spectral type and effective temperature. We also present a revised relationship that estimates the [Fe/H] and [M/H] metallicities of M dwarfs from their Na I, Ca I, and H2O-K2 measurements. Comparisons to model atmosphere provide a qualitative validation of our approach, but also reveal an overall offset between the atomic line strengths predicted by models as compared to actual observations. Our metallicity estimates also reproduce expected correlations with Galactic space motions and H alpha emission line strengths, and return statistically identical metallicities for M dwarfs within a common multiple system. Finally, we find systematic residuals between our H2O-based spectral types and those derived from optical spectral features with previously known sensitivity to stellar metallicity, such as TiO, and identify the CaH1 index as a promising optical index for diagnosing the metallicities of near-solar M dwarfs.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Within the standard model of hierarchical galaxy formation in a Λ cold dark matter universe, the environment of galaxies is expected to play a key role in driving galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper, we investigate whether and how the gas metallicity and the star formation surface density (ΣSFR) depend on galaxy environment. To this end, we analyse a sample of 1162 local, star-forming galaxies from the galaxy survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA). Generally, both parameters do not show any significant dependence on environment. However, in agreement with previous studies, we find that low-mass satellite galaxies are an exception to this rule. The gas metallicity in these objects increases while their ΣSFR decreases slightly with environmental density. The present analysis of MaNGA data allows us to extend this to spatially resolved properties. Our study reveals that the gas metallicity gradients of low-mass satellites flatten and their ΣSFR gradients steepen with increasing environmental density. By extensively exploring a chemical evolution model, we identify two scenarios that are able to explain this pattern: metal-enriched gas accretion or pristine gas inflow with varying accretion time-scales. The latter scenario better matches the observed ΣSFR gradients, and is therefore our preferred solution. In this model, a shorter gas accretion time-scale at larger radii is required. This suggests that ‘outside–in quenching’ governs the star formation processes of low-mass satellite galaxies in dense environments.

Abstract:[Abridged] We investigate how a range of physical processes affect the cosmic metal distribution using a suite of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations. Focusing on z = 0 and 2, we study the metallicities and metal mass fractions for stars as well as for the ISM, and several more diffuse gas phases. We vary the cooling rates, star formation law, structure of the ISM, galactic winds, feedback from AGN, reionization history, stellar IMF, and cosmology. In all models stars and the warm-hot IGM (WHIM) constitute the dominant repository of metals, while for z > 2 the ISM is also important. In models with galactic winds, predictions for the metallicities of the various phases vary at the factor of two level and are broadly consistent with observations. The exception is the cold-warm IGM, whose metallicity varies at the order of magnitude level if the prescription for galactic winds is varied, even for a fixed wind energy per unit stellar mass formed, and falls far below the observed values if winds are not included. At the other extreme, the metallicity of the intracluster medium (ICM) is largely insensitive to the presence of galactic winds, indicating that its enrichment is regulated by other processes. The mean metallicities of stars (~ Z_sun), the ICM (~ 0.1 Z_sun), and the WHIM (~ 0.1 Z_sun) evolve only slowly, while those of the cold halo gas and the IGM increase by more than an order of magnitude from z = 5 to 0. Higher velocity outflows are more efficient at transporting metals to low densities, but actually predict lower metallicities for the cold-warm IGM since the winds shock-heat the gas to high temperatures, thereby increasing the fraction of the metals residing in, but not the metallicity of, the WHIM. Besides galactic winds driven by feedback from star formation, the metal distribution is most sensitive to the inclusion of metal-line cooling and feedback from AGN.

Abstract:We present observational evidence for a stellar Fundamental Metallicity Relation (FMR), a smooth relation between stellar mass, star-formation rate (SFR) and the light-weighted stellar metallicity of galaxies (analogous to the well-established gas-phase FMR). We use the flexible, non-parametric software pPXF to reconstruct simultaneously the star-formation and chemical-enrichment history of a representative sample of galaxies from the local MaNGA survey. We find that (i) the metallicity of individual galaxies increases with cosmic time and (ii) at all stellar masses, the metallicity of galaxies is progressively higher, moving from the star-burst region above the main sequence (MS) towards the passive galaxies below the MS, manifesting the stellar FMR. These findings are in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations from IllustrisTNG, where we find a mass-weighted stellar FMR. The scatter is reduced when replacing the stellar mass $M_{*}$ with $M_{*}/R_{\rm e}$ (with $R_{\rm e}$ being the effective radius), in agreement with previous results using the velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm e}$, which correlates with $M_{*}/R_{\rm e}$. Our results point to starvation as the main physical process through which galaxies quench, showing that metal-poor gas accretion from the intergalactic/circumgalactic medium -- or the lack thereof -- plays an important role in galaxy evolution by simultaneously shaping both their star-formation and their metallicity evolutions, while outflows play a subordinate role. This interpretation is further supported by the additional finding of a young stellar FMR, tracing only the stellar populations formed in the last 300 Myr. This suggests a tight co-evolution of the chemical composition of both the gaseous interstellar medium and the stellar populations, where the gas-phase FMR is continuously imprinted onto the stars over cosmic times.
