Abstract:We formulate scalar field theories coupled non-conformally to gravity in a manifestly frame-independent fashion. Physical quantities such as the $S$ matrix should be invariant under field redefinitions, and hence can be represented by the geometry of the target space. This elegant geometric formulation, however, is obscured when considering the coupling to gravity because of the redundancy associated with the Weyl transformation. The well-known example is the Higgs inflation, where the target space of the Higgs fields is flat in the Jordan frame but is curved in the Einstein frame. Furthermore, one can even show that any geometry of O$(N)$ nonlinear $\sigma$ models can be flattened by an appropriate Weyl transformation. In this Letter, we extend the notion of the target space by including the conformal mode of the metric, and show that the extended geometry provides a compact formulation that is manifestly Weyl-transformation/field-redefinition invariant. We identify the cutoff scale with the inverse of square root of the extended target space curvature and confirm that it coincides with that obtained from two-to-two scattering amplitudes based on our formalism.

Abstract:In the work [\emph{Phys. Rev. D} extbf{84}, 124041 (2011)], to obtain a simple and economic formulation of field equations for generalised theories of gravity described by the Lagrangian , the key equality was derived. In this note, it is demonstrated that such an equality can be directly derived from an off-shell Noether current associated with an arbitrary vector field. As byproducts, a generalized Bianchi identity related to the divergence for the expression of field equations, together with the Noether potential, is obtained. On the basis of the above, we further propose a systematic procedure to derive the equations of motion from the Noether current, and then this procedure is extended to more general higher-order gravities endowed with the Lagrangian encompassing additional terms of the covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. To our knowledge, both the detailed expressions for field equations and the Noether potential associated with such theories are first given at a general level. All the results reveal that using the Noether current to determine field equations establishes a straightforward connection between the symmetry of the Lagrangian and the equations of motion and such a remedy even can avoid calculating the derivative of the Lagrangian density with respect to the metric.

Abstract:In the general relativity theory the basic ingredient to describe gravity is the geometry, which interacts with all forms of matter and energy, and as such, the metric could be interpreted as a true physical quantity. However the metric is not matter nor energy, but instead it is a new dynamical variable that Einstein introduced to describe gravity. In order to conciliate this approach to the more traditional ones, physicists have tried to describe the main ideas of GR in terms of standard conceptions of field theory. In this sense, curved metrics are seen as a dynamical variable emerging from a more fundamental field which lies upon a flat Minkowski spacetime. This was made by the hypothesis that the metric tensor may be written as $g_{\mu\nu} = \eta_{\mu\nu} + h_{\mu\nu}$ where the tensor $ h_{\mu\nu}$ was interpreted either in terms of a spin-2 or constructed in terms of other fields. We review some proposals that were suggested in the treatment of gravity in terms of scalar, spinor and tensor fields configurations.

Abstract:We study transformations of the dynamical fields - a metric, a flat affine connection and a scalar field - in scalar-teleparallel gravity theories. The theories we study belong either to the general teleparallel setting, where no further condition besides vanishing curvature is imposed on the affine connection, or the symmetric or metric teleparallel gravity, where one also imposes vanishing torsion or nonmetricity, respectively. For each of these three settings, we find a general class of scalar-teleparallel action functionals which retain their form under the aforementioned field transformations. This is achieved by generalizing the constraint of vanishing torsion or nonmetricity to non-vanishing, but algebraically constrained torsion or nonmetricity. We find a number of invariant quantities which characterize these theories independently of the choice of field variables, and relate these invariants to analogues of the conformal frames known from scalar-curvature gravity. Using these invariants, we are able to identify a number of physically relevant subclasses of scalar-teleparallel theories. We also generalize our results to multiple scalar fields, and speculate on further extended theories with non-vanishing, but algebraically constrained curvature.

Abstract:It is well known that the Einstein-Hilbert action in two dimensions is topological and yields an identically vanishing Einstein tensor. Consequently one is faced with difficulties when formulating a non-trivial gravity model. We present a new, intrinsically two-dimensional, approach to this problem based on the Einstein action. This yields a well defined variational approach which results in new field equations that break diffeomorphism invariance. Our proposed approach does not require the introduction of additional scalar fields, nor the use of conformal transformations. However, we can show how including conformal counter terms leads to equivalent results. In doing so, we can provide an explanation for why previous approaches worked. Solutions to the field equations are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Multiple scalar fields appear in vast modern particle physics and gravity models. When they couple to gravity nonminimally, conformal transformation is utilized to bring the theory into the Einstein frame. However, the kinetic terms of scalar fields are usually not canonical, which makes analytic treatment difficult. Here, we investigate under what conditions the theories can be transformed to the quasicanonical form, in which case the effective metric tensor in field space is conformally flat. We solve the relevant nonlinear partial differential equations for an arbitrary number of scalar fields and present several solutions that may be useful for future phenomenological model building, including the σ model with a particular nonminimal coupling. We also find conformal flatness can always be achieved in some modified gravity theories, for example, the Starobinsky model.

Abstract:We give an alternative description of the physical content of general relativity that does not require a Lorentz invariant spacetime. Instead, we find that gravity admits a dual description in terms of a theory where local size is irrelevant. The dual theory is invariant under foliation preserving 3-diffeomorphisms and 3D conformal transformations that preserve the 3-volume (for the spatially compact case). Locally, this symmetry is identical to that of Horava-Lifshitz gravity in the high energy limit but our theory is equivalent to Einstein gravity. Specifically, we find that the solutions of general relativity, in a gauge where the spatial hypersurfaces have constant mean extrinsic curvature, can be mapped to solutions of a particular gauge fixing of the dual theory. Moreover, this duality is not accidental. We provide a general geometric picture for our procedure that allows us to trade foliation invariance for conformal invariance. The dual theory provides a new proposal for the theory space of quantum gravity.

TDiff in the Dark: Gravity with a scalar field invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms

Abstract:We reflect on the possibility of having a matter action that is invariant only under transverse diffeomorphisms. This possibility is particularly interesting for the dark sector, where no restrictions arise based on the weak equivalence principle. In order to implement this idea we consider a scalar field which couples to gravity minimally but via arbitrary functions of the metric determinant. We show that the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field takes the perfect fluid form when its velocity vector is time-like. We analyze the conservation of this tensor in detail, obtaining a seminal novel result for the energy density of this field in the kinetic dominated regime. Indeed, in this regime the fluid is always adiabatic and we obtain an explicit expression for the speed of sound. Furthermore, to get insight in the gravitational properties of these theories, we consider the fulfillment of the energy conditions, concluding that nontrivial physically reasonable matter violates the strong energy condition in the potential domination regime. On the other hand, we present some shift-symmetric models of particular interest. These are: constant equation of state models (which may provide us with a successful description of dark matter or dark radiation) and models presenting different gravitational domains (characterized by the focusing or possible defocusing of time-like geodesics), as it happens in unified dark matter-energy models.

Dirac operators and field equations of the gravitational field and matter fields

Abstract:Dirac operators on curved space-times are introduced with the help of a new point-view that observers have to be included in the formulation of natural laws. The class of Dirac operators are Lorentz invariant in the sense that the transformation rule is specified under diffeomorphisms of the space-time which preserve the time orientation and the gravitational field. Moreover these Dirac operators, like the original Dirac's operator with the special relativity, satisfy the Hamiltonian relation required by the general theory of relativity up to a correction due to the setup of a reference frame. In order to generalise (or discover) Dirac operators, which have been an important building block in the quantum field theories (QFTs), to curved space-times, we bring observers (which are elements of the principal orthonormal bundle over the space-time with its structure group being the proper Lorentz group) into the description of Fermion fields in the presence of a gravitational field. As a consequence field equations combining the gravitational field and matter fields may be formulated. This work suggests that observational effects (due to the setup of references) in the presence of a strong gravitational field, i.e. matter, may be unavoidable.

Abstract:From modern observations of gravitational interactions, it can be inferred that there is much left to discover about the fundamental gravitational field. Since the advent of the General Theory of Relativity over a century ago, we have come to make exotic assumptions pertaining to the inner workings of an associated field theory. One of which is an elastic nature to spacetime and the behavior of gravity for strong and weak fields. In this work we investigate a more \textit{physical} nature, expanding upon general relativity led by observations of strong sources. We introduce a candidate Lorentz-invariant field theory that employs an \textit{elastic} and \textit{pseudoscalar} nature to the field interpretation and it's properties. A unique generation of the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion is presented; resulting in a longitudinal wave equation for the \textit{Dilation} gravitational field. This provides a modern advancement of a relativistic gravitational field theory, supported by observation.

Abstract:Recently, an extension of the standard four-dimensional scalar conformal action, yielding a second-order field equation that remains conformally invariant, was proposed. In spite of this, the corresponding action is not invariant under conformal transformations and this motivates us to define the notion of non-Noetherian conformal scalar field. In this article, we go further by determining the most general action in four dimensions that gives rise to a non-Noetherian conformal scalar field satisfying a second-order equation. This task is achieved by using the solution to the inverse problem of the calculus of variations. Surprisingly enough, the standard equation is shown to be extended by a non-Noetherian conformal piece involving a nonminimal coupling with a very particular combination of squared curvature terms, which is none other than the one defining the so-called Critical Gravity. We also prove that the most general second-order Euler-Lagrange equation for a conformal scalar field involves additional Noetherian conformal nonminimal couplings defined by an arbitrary function of the Weyl tensor. The recently proposed non-Noetherian conformal extension is recovered as a particular example of this function.

Abstract:In this article we present a natural generalization of Newton's Second Law valid in field theory, i.e., when the parameterized curves are replaced by parameterized submanifolds of higher dimension. For it we introduce what we have called the geodesic $k$-vector field, analogous to the ordinary geodesic field and which describes the inertial motions (i.e., evolution in the absence of forces). From this generalized Newton's law, the corresponding Hamilton's canonical equations of field theory (Hamilton-De Donder-Weyl equations) are obtained by a simple procedure. It is shown that solutions of generalized Newton's equation also hold the canonical equations. However, unlike the ordinary case, Newton equations determined by different forces can define equal Hamilton's equations.

Abstract:We test ideas of the recently proposed first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity using an exact geometry sourced by a conformally coupled scalar field. We report a non-monotonic behaviour of the effective ``temperature of gravity'' not observed before and due to a new term in the equation describing the relaxation of gravity toward its state of equilibrium, i.e., Einstein gravity, showing a richer range of thermal behaviours of modified gravity than previously thought.

Abstract:In the framework of alternative metric gravity theories, it has been shown by several authors that a generic Lagrangian depending on the Riemann tensor describes a theory with 8 degrees of freedom (which reduce to 3 for f(R) Lagrangians depending only on the curvature scalar). This result is often related to a reformulation of the fourth-order equations for the metric into a set of second-order equations for a multiplet of fields, including a massive scalar field and a massive spin-2 field. In this article we investigate an issue which does not seem to have been addressed so far: in ordinary general-relativistic field theories, all fundamental fields (i.e. fields with definite spin and mass) reduce to test fields in some appropriate limit of the model, where they cease to act as sources for the metric curvature. In this limit, each of the fundamental fields can be excited from its ground state independently from the others. The question is: does higher-derivative gravity admit a test-field limit for its fundamental fields? It is easy to show that for a f(R) theory the test-field limit does exist; then, we consider the case of Lagrangians quadratically depending on the full Ricci tensor. We show that the constraint binding together the scalar field and the massive spin-2 field does not disappear in the limit where they should be expected to act as test fields, except for a particular choice of the Lagrangian, which cause the scalar field to disappear (reducing to 7 DOF). We finally consider the addition of an arbitrary function of the quadratic invariant of the Weyl tensor and show that the resulting model still lacks a proper test-field limit. We argue that the lack of a test-field limit for the fundamental fields may constitute a serious drawback of the full 8 DOF higher-order gravity models, which is not encountered in the restricted 7 DOF or 3 DOF cases.

Abstract:Partial differential equations exhibiting an anisotropic scaling between space and time -- such as those of Horava-Lifshitz gravity -- have a dispersive nature. They contain higher-order spatial derivatives, but remain second order in time. This is inconvenient for performing long-time numerical evolutions, as standard explicit schemes fail to maintain convergence unless the time step is chosen to be very small. In this work, we develop an implicit evolution scheme that does not suffer from this drawback, and which is stable and second-order accurate. As a proof of concept, we study the numerical evolution of a Lifshitz scalar field on top of a spherically symmetric black hole space-time. We explore the evolution of a static pulse and an (approximately) ingoing wave-packet for different strengths of the Lorentz-breaking terms, accounting also for the effect of the angular momentum eigenvalue and the resulting effective centrifugal barrier. Our results indicate that the dispersive terms produce a cascade of modes that accumulate in the region in between the Killing and universal horizons, indicating a possible instability of the latter.

Abstract:General relativity is highly successful in explaining a wide range of gravitational phenomena including the gravitational waves emitted by binary systems and the shadows cast by supermassive black holes. From a modern perspective the theory is not fundamental though, but constitutes the lowest order term in an effective field theory description of the gravitational force. As a consequence, the gravitational dynamics should receive corrections by higher-derivative terms. This essay discusses structural aspects associated with these corrections and summarizes their imprint on static, spherically symmetric geometries. Along these lines, we critically reassess the common practice of using local field redefinitions in order to simplify the dynamics at the danger of shifting physics effects into sectors which are beyond the approximation under consideration.
