Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:We consider the energy spectrum $\Xi_E(N)$ of harmonic maps from the sphere into a closed Riemannian manifold $N$. While a well known conjecture asserts that $\Xi_E(N)$ is discrete whenever $N$ is analytic, for most analytic targets it is only known that any potential accumulation point of the energy spectrum must be given by the sum of the energies of at least two harmonic spheres. The lowest energy level that could hence potentially be an accumulation point of $\Xi_E$ is thus $2 E_{min}$. In the present paper we exclude this possibility for generic 3 manifolds and prove additional results that establish obstructions to the gluing of harmonic spheres and Lojasiewicz-estimates for almost harmonic maps.

Abstract:Given a half-harmonic map $u\in \dot H^{\frac{1}{2},2}(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{S}^1)$ minimizing the fractional Dirichlet energy under Dirichlet boundary conditions in $\mathbb{R}\setminus I$, we show the existence of a second half-harmonic map, minimizing the Dirichlet energy in a different homotopy class. This is a first step towards addressing a problem raised by Brezis and is based on the study of the degree of fractional Sobolev maps and a sharp estimate à la Brezis-Coron. We give examples showing that it is in general not possible to minimize in every homotopy class and show a contrast with the 2-dimensional case.

Abstract:We show the regularity of, and derive a-priori estimates for (weakly) harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold into a Euclidean sphere under the assumption that the image avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator. The proofs combine constructions of strictly convex functions and the regularity theory of quasi-linear elliptic systems. We apply these results to the spherical and Euclidean Bernstein problems for minimal hypersurfaces, obtaining new conditions under which compact minimal hypersurfaces in spheres or complete minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces are trivial.

Abstract:We prove the existence of nonconstant harmonic maps of optimal regularity from an arbitrary closed manifold of dimension to any closed, non-aspherical manifold containing no stable minimal two-spheres. In particular, this gives the first general existence result for harmonic maps from higher-dimensional manifolds to a large class of positively curved targets. In the special case of the round spheres , , we obtain a distinguished family of nonconstant harmonic maps of index at most , with singular set of codimension at least 7 for sufficiently large. Furthermore, if , we show that these smooth harmonic maps stabilize as becomes large, and correspond to the solutions of an eigenvalue optimization problem on , generalizing the conformal maximization of the first Laplace eigenvalue on surfaces.

On symmetry of energy minimizing harmonic-type maps on cylindrical surfaces

Abstract:The paper concerns the analysis of global minimizers of a Dirichlet-type energy functional in the class of $ \mathbb{S}^2 $-valued maps defined in cylindrical surfaces. The model naturally arises as a curved thin-film limit in the theories of nematic liquid crystals and micromagnetics. We show that minimal configurations are $ z $-invariant and that energy minimizers in the class of weakly axially symmetric competitors are, in fact, axially symmetric. Our main result is a family of sharp Poincaré-type inequality on the circular cylinder, which allows for establishing a nearly complete picture of the energy landscape. The presence of symmetry-breaking phenomena is highlighted and discussed. Finally, we provide a complete characterization of in-plane minimizers, which typically appear in numerical simulations for reasons we explain.

Abstract:We relate the existence problem of harmonic maps into $S^2$ to the convex geometry of $S^2$. On one hand, this allows us to construct new examples of harmonic maps of degree 0 from compact surfaces of arbitrary genus into $S^2$. On the other hand, we produce new example of regions that do not contain closed geodesics (that is, harmonic maps from $S^1$) but do contain images of harmonic maps from other domains. These regions can therefore not support a strictly convex function. Our construction builds upon an example of W. Kendall, and uses M. Struwe's heat flow approach for the existence of harmonic maps from surfaces.

Nonexistence of Minimizing Harmonic Maps from $2$-Spheres

Abstract:A harmonic map is, by definition, a critical point of the functional E. A harmonic map is said to be minimizing if it minimizes energy in its connected component of C=(N, M), i.e. in its homotopy class. When dim N= 1, N is a circle S and a harmonic map f" S--M is a closed geodesic. It is well known that every component of C=(S, M) contains a minimizing closed geodesic. In contrast with this, when dim N=2, it is not always true that there exists a minimizing harmonic map in each component of C=(N, M). For instance there exists no minimizing harmonic map of degree +1 from a Riemann surface of genus =>1 to a Riemann sphere whatever metrics are chosen on them ([5]). On the other hand, Sacks and Uhlenbeck [8] established an existence result when N=S. Their result was applied to the proof of Frankel’s conjecture by Siu and Yau [9] and to the study on the topology of 3-manifolds by Meeks and Yau [7]. Harmonic maps to the circle with higher dimensional singular set

Abstract:In a closed, oriented ambient manifold $(M^n,g)$ we consider the problem of finding $\mathbb{S}^1$-valued harmonic maps with prescribed singular set. We show that the boundary of any oriented $(n-1)$-submanifold can be realised as the singular set of an $\mathbb{S}^1$-valued map, which is classically harmonic away from the singularity and distributionally harmonic across. If the singular set $\Gamma$ is also embedded and $C^{1,1}$, we consider three variational relaxations of the same problem and show that the energy of minimisers converges, after renormalisation, to the volume $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}(\Gamma)$ plus a lower-order "renormalised energy" -- common to all relaxations -- describing an energetic interaction between different components of the singular set.

Min-max harmonic maps and a new characterization of conformal eigenvalues

Abstract:Given a surface $M$ and a fixed conformal class $c$ one defines $\Lambda_k(M,c)$ to be the supremum of the $k$-th nontrivial Laplacian eigenvalue over all metrics $g\in c$ of unit volume. It has been observed by Nadirashvili that the metrics achieving $\Lambda_k(M,c)$ are closely related to harmonic maps to spheres. In the present paper, we identify $\Lambda_1(M,c)$ and $\Lambda_2(M,c)$ with min-max quantities associated to the energy functional for sphere-valued maps. As an application, we obtain several new eigenvalue bounds, including a sharp isoperimetric inequality for the first two Steklov eigenvalues. This characterization also yields an alternative proof of the existence of maximal metrics realizing $\Lambda_1(M,c)$, $\Lambda_2(M,c)$ and, moreover, allows us to obtain a regularity theorem for maximal Radon measures satisfying a natural compactness condition.

Abstract:In this paper we study upper and lower bounds of the index and the nullity for sequences of harmonic maps with uniformly bounded Dirichlet energy from a two-dimensional Riemann surface into a compact target manifold. The main difficulty stems from the fact that in the limit the sequence can develop finitely many bubbles. We obtain the index bounds by studying the limiting behavior of sequences of eigenfunctions of the linearized operator and the key novelty of the present paper is that we diagonalize the index form of the Dirichlet energy with respect to a bilinear form which varies with the sequence of harmonic maps and which helps us to show the convergence of the sequence of eigenfunctions on the weak limit, the bubbles and the intermediate neck regions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the behavior of a sequence of harmonic maps from surfaces with uniformly bounded energy on the generalized neck domain. The generalized neck domain is a union of ghost bubbles and annular neck domains, which connects non-trivial bubbles. An upper bound of the energy density is proved and we use it to study the limit of the nullity and index of the sequence.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the blow-up phenomena on the $\alpha _k$-harmonic map sequences with bounded uniformly $\alpha _k$-energy, denoted by $\{u_{\alpha _k}: \alpha _k>1 \quad \text{ and } \quad \alpha _k\searrow 1\}$, from a compact Riemann surface into a compact Riemannian manifold. If the Ricci curvature of the target manifold has a positive lower bound and the indices of the $\alpha _k$-harmonic map sequence with respect to the corresponding $\alpha _k$-energy are bounded, then we can conclude that, if the blow-up phenomena occurs in the convergence of $\{u_{\alpha _k}\}$ as $\alpha _k\searrow 1$, the limiting necks of the convergence of the sequence consist of finite length geodesics, hence the energy identity holds true. For a harmonic map sequence $u_k:(\Sigma ,h_k)\rightarrow N$, where the conformal class defined by $h_k$ diverges, we also prove some similar results.

Abstract:In this paper, we find three nontrivial characterizations of Euclidean spheres. In the first result, we show that the existence of a nonzero nontrivial concircular vector field $ {\omega } $ on a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ of the Euclidean space $ R^{m+1} $ with a mean curvature $ \alpha $ constant along the integral curves of $ {\omega } $ and a shape operator $ T $ satisfying $ T({\omega) = \alpha \omega } $ implies that $ \alpha $ is a constant and $ N $ is isometric to a sphere, and the converse also holds. In the second result, we show that the presence of a unit Killing vector field $ \mathbf{v} $ on a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ of a Euclidean space $ R^{m+1} $ gives a nonzero function $ \sigma = g\left(T \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{v}\right) $ with shape operator $ T $, and the integral of the function $ m\alpha \sigma Ric\left(\mathbf{v}, \mathbf{v}\right) $ has a certain lower bound, and is isometric to an odd-dimensional sphere, and the converse holds too. Finally, we show that for a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ with support $ \rho $ and basic vector field $ \mathbf{u} $, the integral of the Ricci curvature $ Ric\left(\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{u}\right) $ has a specific lower bound and is necessarily isometric to a sphere, and the converse also holds.

Abstract:Motivated by the theory of harmonic maps on Riemannian surfaces, conformal-harmonic maps between two Riemannian manifolds $M$ and $N$ were introduced in search of a natural notion of harmonicity for maps defined on a general even dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$. They are critical points of a conformally invariant energy functional and reassemble the GJMS operators when the target is the set of real or complex numbers. On a four dimensional manifold, conformal-harmonic maps are the conformally invariant counterparts of the intrinsic bi-harmonic maps and a mapping version of the conformally invariant Paneitz operator for functions. In this paper, we consider conformal-harmonic maps from certain locally conformally flat 4-manifolds into spheres. We prove a quantitative uniqueness result for such conformal-harmonic maps as an immediate consequence of convexity for the conformally-invariant energy functional. To this end, we are led to prove a version of second order Hardy inequality on manifolds, which may be of independent interest.
Harmonic, Holomorphic and Rational Maps from Self-Duality

Abstract:We propose a generalization of the so-called rational map ansatz on the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, for any compact simple Lie group $G$ such that $G/{\widehat K}\otimes U(1)$ is an Hermitian symmetric space, for some subgroup ${\widehat K}$ of $G$. It generalizes the rational maps on the two-sphere $SU(2)/U(1)$, and also on $CP^N=SU(N+1)/SU(N)\otimes U(1)$, and opens up the way for applications of such ansätze on non-linear sigma models, Skyrme theory and magnetic monopoles in Yang-Mills-Higgs theories. Our construction is based on a well known mathematical result stating that stable harmonic maps $X$ from the two-sphere $S^2$ to compact Hermitian symmetric spaces $G/{\widehat K}\otimes U(1)$ are holomorphic or anti-holomorphic. We derive such a mathematical result using ideas involving the concept of self-duality, in a way that makes it more accessible to theoretical physicists. Using a topological (homotopic) charge that admits an integral representation, we construct first order partial differential self-duality equations such that their solutions also solve the (second order) Euler-Lagrange associated to the harmonic map energy $E=\int_{S^2} \mid dX\mid^2 d\mu$. We show that such solutions saturate a lower bound on the energy $E$, and that the self-duality equations constitute the Cauchy-Riemann equations for the maps $X$. Therefore, they constitute harmonic and (anti)holomorphic maps, and lead to the generalization of the rational map ansätze in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Abstract:By introducing the “relative energy”, we develop a new method for finding harmonic maps from noncompact complete Riemannian manifolds with prescribed asympototic behaviour at infinity. This method is an extension of the well known direct method of energy-minimization for compact domains. As an application of our method, we show that the Dirichlet problem at infinity with Hölder continuous boundary data for harmonic maps from a Cartan-Hadarmard manifold with bounded negative curvature into a compact manifold, has a locally minimizing solution which is smooth near infinity.

Abstract:In this note, we study non-uniqueness for minimizing harmonic maps from $B^3$ to $\mathbb{S}^2$. We show that every boundary map can be modified to a boundary map that admits multiple minimizers of the Dirichlet energy by a small $W^{1,p}$-change for $p<2$. This strengthens a remark by the second-named author and Strzelecki. The main novel ingredient is a homotopy construction, which is the answer to an easier variant of a challenging question regarding the existence of a norm control for homotopies between $ W^{1,p} $ maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the convergence behavior of a sequence of harmonic maps from long cylinders with uniformly bounded energy. If the bubbling phenomenon does not occur, we give the length formula of the limit map (i.e., geodesic in the target manifold). Furthermore, we provide a geometric explanation of the energy identity for a sequence of harmonic maps from degenerating Riemann surfaces with uniformly bounded energy, proved by M. Zhu.
