Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a mechanism of an emergent quasi-localized phase in chiral symmetry classes, where wave function along a spatial direction with weak topology is delocalized but exponentially localized along the other directions. The Anderson transition in 2D chiral symmetry classes is induced by the proliferation of vortex-antivortex pairs of a U(1) phase degree of freedom, while the weak topology endows the pair with the Berry phase. We argue that the Berry phase induces spatial polarizations of the pairs along the topological direction through the quantum interference effect, and the proliferation of the polarized vortex pairs results in the quasi-localized phase.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of the impact mechanism of weak topological effects on the Anderson transition in the chiral symmetry class, and the physical nature of the resulting quasi-localized phase. Specifically, the authors propose a mechanism in which the wave function is discrete along a certain spatial direction but exhibits exponential localization in other directions. The study finds that in the 2D chiral symmetry class, the Anderson transition is caused by the proliferation of vortex-antivortex pairs of the U(1) phase degree of freedom. Weak topology endows these vortex pairs with a Berry phase, and through quantum interference effects, leads to the spatial polarization of these vortex pairs along the topological direction. The proliferation of these polarized vortex pairs ultimately results in the emergence of the quasi-localized phase. Through field theory analysis and numerical simulations, the authors demonstrate that in the presence of weak topology, a quasi-localized phase with extreme spatial anisotropy indeed appears in 2D systems, and this phase always appears adjacent to the diffusive metallic phase. Additionally, the paper explores the quantum critical exponents of the phase transition between the metallic phase and the quasi-localized phase.
