Abstract:Despite recent experimental developments, the topological order of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling $\nu=5/2$ remains an outstanding question. We study conductance and shot noise in a quantum point contact device in the charge-equilibrated regime and show that, among Pfaffian, particle-hole Praffian, and anti-Pfaffian (aPf) candidate states, the hole-conjugate aPf state is unique in that it can produce a conductance plateau at $G=(7/3)e^2/h$ by two fundamentally distinct mechanisms. We demonstrate that these mechanisms can be distinguished by shot noise measurements on the plateaus. We also determine distinct features of the conductance of the aPf state in the coherent regime. Our results can be used to experimentally single out the aPf order.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to identify and distinguish different topological order states, especially the anti - Pfaffian (aPf) state, through quantum - dot - contact (QPC) transport experiments in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) state with a filling factor of \( \nu = 5/2 \). Although progress has been made in experimental techniques in recent years, the topological order of the \( \nu = 5/2 \) state remains an unsolved mystery in condensed - matter physics. The paper studies the conductance and shot noise in QPC devices for different candidate states (Pfaffian, particle - hole Pfaffian, and anti - Pfaffian) under the charge - balanced - transport regime and shows the uniqueness of the aPf state.
### Main problems
1. **Identifying the aPf state**:
- The main goal of the paper is to identify the characteristics of the aPf state by analyzing edge transport in QPC devices. In particular, due to its hole - conjugation property, the aPf state can produce two fundamentally different mechanisms, resulting in a conductance plateau \( G=\frac{7}{3}\frac{e^{2}}{h} \).
- One of the mechanisms is that when the local filling factor in the QPC region \( \nu_{\text{QPC}} = 3 \), the conductance plateau \( G = \frac{7}{3}\frac{e^{2}}{h} \) will be formed. This mechanism is only applicable to the aPf state because it is the only candidate state with the hole - conjugation characteristic.
2. **Distinguishing different mechanisms**:
- Another mechanism is that when the local density in the QPC region is reduced to the stable FQHE filling factor \( \nu_{\text{QPC}}=7/3 \), a conductance plateau of \( G = \frac{7}{3}\frac{e^{2}}{h} \) will also be formed. This mechanism is applicable to any candidate state of \( \nu = 5/2 \).
- Through shot - noise measurements, the \( G=\frac{7}{3}\frac{e^{2}}{h} \) plateaus produced by these two different mechanisms can be distinguished. The aPf state exhibits unique shot - noise characteristics on these plateaus.
3. **Conductance under coherent transport**:
- The paper also explores the evolution of the conductance plateau \( G=\frac{7}{3}\frac{e^{2}}{h} \) of the aPf state under the coherent - transport regime. Under low - temperature and low - bias - voltage conditions, due to the influence of disorder, the conductance \( G \) will fluctuate within a certain range.
- Compared with other non - Abelian candidate states, only the aPf state can achieve \( G>\frac{5}{2} \) in the QPC geometry, which is an important fingerprint of the aPf state.
### Conclusion
Through the above research, the paper provides methods for experimentally identifying and distinguishing different topological order states in the \( \nu = 5/2 \) state, especially for applications in GaAs/AlGaAs, graphene, and other two - dimensional materials. These methods include distinguishing different conductance - plateau mechanisms through shot - noise measurements and observing the conductance behavior unique to the aPf state under the coherent - transport regime. These results are expected to enhance the prospects for experimentally determining the \( \nu = 5/2 \) state.
