Abstract:We propose a new phenomenological second order gravity theory to be denoted as ''Schouten-Codazzi' Gravity'' (SCG), as it is based on Schouten and Codazzi tensors. The theory is related, but is clearly distinct from Cotton Gravity. By assuming as source the energy momentum of General Relativity, we form a second order system with its geometric sector given by the sum of the Schouten tensor and a generic second order symmetric tensor complying with the following properties: (i) it must satisfy the Codazzi differential condition and (ii) it must be concomitant with the invariant characterization based on the algebraic structure of curvature tensors for specific spacetimes or classes of spacetimes. We derive and briefly discuss the properties of SCG solutions for static spherical symmetry (vacuum and perfect fluid), FLRW models and spherical dust fluids. While we do recognize that SCG is ``work in progress'' in an incipient stage that still requires significant theoretical development, we believe that the theory provides valuable guidelines in the search for alternatives to General Relativity

Exact solutions of Cotton Gravity in its Codazzi formulation

Abstract:The "Codazzi formulation", based on a Codazzi tensor, provides a more robust and straightforward theoretical framework for "Cotton Gravity" (CG) than its original formulation in terms of the Cotton tensor. Using this formulation we provide a self-consistent procedure to generate non-trivial exact solutions in CG that generalize well known General Relativity (GR) solutions. We re-derive a known CG solution that generalizes the Schwarzschild solution of GR, showing that it is the unique vacuum solution of static spherical symmetry in CG, extending this result to a CG generalization of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution of GR, all of which places a strong case supporting the fulfillment of Birkhoff's theorem. When applied to Friedman-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) models CG naturally identifies the $\Lambda$CDM model as the unique FLRW dust model with constant negative spatial curvature. We also obtain CG generalizations of the Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) and Szekeres dust solutions of GR, allowing for time and space dependent changes from decelerated to accelerated evolution, without necessarily assuming a dark energy source. The CG generalization of static perfect fluid spheres allows in the weak field regime to model the flattening of rotation velocities in spherical galactic systems without assuming dark matter. We also generalize non-static spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions with a shear-free 4 velocity. Our results suggest the need for further research using the Codazzi formulation to explore the potential for applications of CG to current open problems in gravitational systems.

Cotton Gravity: the cosmological constant as spatial curvature

Abstract:We derive Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) models as non-trivial solutions of "Cotton Gravity" (CG), a recently proposed gravity theory alternative to General Relativity (GR) based on the Cotton tensor. Using an equivalent formulation, we show that CG leads to FLRW models with a modified expression for spatial curvature in terms of the Ricci scalar of hypersurfaces orthonormal to the 4-velocity. Considering models compatible with a well posed initial value formulation leads to operationally the same FLRW models in GR, but endowed with a precise covariant characterization of the positive/negative cosmological constant as the case with constant negative/positive spatial curvature. Under CG, the $\Lambda$CDM model becomes the unique FLRW dust model with constant negative spatial curvature.

Abstract:It is well-known that the theory of Cotton gravity proposed by Harada is trivially solved by all isotropic and homogeneous cosmologies. We show that this under-determination is more general. More precisely, the degree of arbitrariness in the solutions increases with the degree of symmetry. We give two simple examples. The first is that of static spherically symmetric solutions, which depend on an arbitrary function of the radial coordinate. The second is that of anisotropic cosmologies, which depend on an arbitrary function of time.

Vanishing of Conserved Charges in Cotton Gravity

Abstract:Cotton gravity was recently introduced as a higher derivative extension of General Relativity. The field equations of the theory involve the rank-3 Cotton tensor. Here we show that all solutions of the theory, including the black holes, have vanishing conserved charges, i.e. mass and angular momentum. This result implies that either the theory is unphysical since all the black holes carry the charges of the vacuum and can be created at no energy cost, or the theory has confinement of mass/energy and all other conserved quantities.

Abstract:This is our reply to "Critical remarks on Finslerian modifications of gravity and cosmology by Zhe Chang and Xin Li", Sergiu I. Vacaru, Phys. Lett. B 690 (2010) 224. It is pointed out that the Finslerian modifications of gravity and cosmology (Zhe Chang and Xin Li, Phys. Lett. B 676 (2009) 173; {\it ibid} 668 (2008) 453) is a suggestion on the generalization of Einstein's gravity and cosmology, but not a proof for theorems in geometry. False or true of the theory should be tested by experiments or observations. We show that the arguments of Sergiu I. Vacaru were based a wrong logic. A personal claim can not be used to prove any other theory be wrong. To get the claim: {\it "we may construct more "standard" physical Finsler classical/quantum gravity theories for metric compatible connections like the Cartan d-connection"}, Sergiu I. Vacaru should complete a consistent presentation at least. We suggest Sergiu I. Vacaru to make some predictions on gravity and cosmoligy using his {\it "standard" physical Finsler classical/quantum gravity theories} as we did, and compare them with astronomical observations. By the way, we should say that it is still really far from a theory of quantum gravity.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Rovelli responds to our critical assessment of Relational Quantum Mechanics (RQM). His main argument is that our assessment lacks merit, because we fail to understand, or cope with, the premises of his theory; instead, he argues, we judge his proposal, blinded by the preconceptions inherent to ``our camp''. Here, we explicitly show that our assessment judges RQM on its own terms, together with the basic requirements of precision, clarity, logical soundness and empirical suitability. Under those circumstances, we prove false Rovelli's claim that RQM provides a satisfactory, realistic, non-solipsistic description of the world. Moreover, his reply serves us to further exhibit the serious problems of the RQM proposal, as well as the failures of its author to understanding the basic conceptual difficulties of quantum theory.

Abstract:In this paper we present the general spherically symmetric static solution to the vacuum equations of Cotton gravity. The obtained metric solution reveals the presence of singularities at the photosphere of a spherical source, which probably obstruct the formation of the stellar Schwarzschild-radius black holes. The solution is characterized by two integration constants, whose values can be restricted by association with the Hubble horizon. We examine the diverse features of the solution, including the long-range modifications to Newton's force through the incorporation of the velocity-squared repulsive term to model the dark energy.

This note is a comment on a short paper by Jean-Marie Souriau, now reprinted in the GRG Golden Oldies collection. Souriau's short 1970 note was a pioneering contribution to a symplectic description of the dynamics of spinning particles in general relativity which remained somewhat unnoticed. We explain the specificity of Souriau's approach and emphasize its potential interest within the current flurry of activity on the gravitational interaction of spinning particles.

Abstract:This is a review of new developments in entropic gravity in light of the Relativistic Transactional Interpretation (RTI). A transactional approach to spacetime events can give rise in a natural way to entropic gravity (in the way originally proposed by Erik Verlinde) while also overcoming extant objections to that research program. The theory also naturally gives rise to a Cosmological Constant and to Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) and thus provides a physical explanation for the phenomena historically attributed to "dark energy" and "dark matter".

Abstract:I hesitated for a long time before giving shape to these notes, originally intended for preliminary reading by the attendees to the Summer School "New paths towards quantum gravity" (Holbaek Bay, Denmark, May 2008). At the end, I decide against just selling my mathematical wares, and for a survey, necessarily very selective, but taking a global phenomenological approach to its subject matter. After all, non-commutative geometry does not purport yet to solve the riddle of quantum gravity; it is more of an insurance policy against the probable failure of the other approaches. The plan is as follows: the introduction invites students to the fruitful doubts and conundrums besetting the application of even classical gravity. Next, the first experiments detecting quantum gravitational states inoculate us a healthy dose of skepticism on some of the current ideologies. In Section 3 we look at the action for general relativity as a consequence of gauge theory for quantum tensor fields. Section 4 briefly deals with the unimodular variants. Section 5 arrives at non-commutative geometry. I am convinced that, if this is to play a role in quantum gravity, commutative and non-commutative manifolds must be treated on the same footing; which justifies the place granted to the reconstruction theorem. Together with Section 3, this part constitutes the main body of the notes. Only very summarily at the end of this section we point to some approaches to gravity within the non-commutative realm. The last section delivers a last dose of skepticism. My efforts will have been rewarded if someone from the young generation learns to mistrust current mindsets.
