Abstract:Let C be a smooth complex projective curve of genus g and let be its k -fold symmetric product. The covering gonality of is the least gonality of an irreducible curve passing through a general point of . It follows from previous works of the authors that if and , the covering gonality of equals the gonality of C . In this paper, we prove that under mild assumptions of generality on C , the only curves computing the covering gonality of are copies of C of the form , for some point . As a byproduct, we deduce that the connecting gonality of —i.e. the least gonality of an irreducible curve connecting two general points of —is strictly larger than the covering gonality.

Abstract:Given an irreducible projective variety $X$, the covering gonality of $X$ is the least gonality of an irreducible curve $E\subset X$ passing through a general point of $X$. In this paper we study the covering gonality of the $k$-fold symmetric product $C^{(k)}$ of a smooth complex projective curve $C$ of genus $g\geq k+1$. It follows from a previous work of the first author that the covering gonality of the second symmetric product of $C$ equals the gonality of $C$. Using a similar approach, we prove the same for the $3$-fold and the $4$-fold symmetric product of $C$. A crucial point in the proof is the study of Cayley-Bacharach condition on Grassmannians. In particular, we describe the geometry of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^n$ satisfying this condition and we prove a result bounding the dimension of their linear span.

Abstract:We study the gonality of curves $C$ over $\mathbb C$ whose normalization is composed of one or two copies of $\mathbb P^1$. In the first case, $C$ is a nodal curve with $g(C)$ nodes, and in the second case $C$ is a so-called binary curve. In any case we show that the usual bound $\mathrm{gon}(C)\leq\lfloor\frac{g(C)+3}{2}\rfloor$ holds if $g(C)\geq 2$, with equality holding generically.

Abstract:We explicitly construct a V-normal crossing Gorenstein canonical model of the relative symmetric products of a local semistable degeneration of surfaces without a triple point by means of toric geometry. Using this model, we calculate the stringy E-polynomial of the relative symmetric product. We also construct a minimal model of degeneration of Hilbert schemes explicitly.

Abstract:For any $g_1, g_2 \ge 0$, this paper shows that there is a cocompact lattice $\Gamma < \mathrm{PU}(2,1)$ such that the ball quotient $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{B}^2$ is birational to a product $C_1 \times C_2$ of smooth projective curves $C_j$ of genus $g_j$. The only prior examples were $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, due to Deligne--Mostow and rediscovered by many others, and a lesser-known product of elliptic curves whose existence follows from work of Hirzebruch. Combined with related new examples, this answers the rational variant of a question of Gromov in the positive for surfaces of Kodaira dimension $\kappa \le 0$, namely that they admit deformations $V^\prime$ such that there is a compact ball quotient $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{B}^2$ with a rational map $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{B}^2 \dashrightarrow V^\prime$. Often the proof gives the stronger conclusion that $V^\prime$ is birational to a ball quotient orbifold. It also follows that every simply connected $4$-manifold is dominated by a complex hyperbolic manifold. All examples considered in this paper are shown to be arithmetic, and even arithmeticity of Hirzebruch's example appears to be new.

Remarks on the minimal genus of curves linearly moving on a surface

Abstract:Given a smooth, irreducible, projective surface $S$, let $g(S)$ be the minimum geometric genus of an irreducible curve that moves in a linear system of positive dimension on $S$. We determine the value of this birational invariant for a general surface of degree $d$ in $\mathbb P^3$ and give a bound for $g(S)$ if $S$ is a general polarised K3 or abelian surface. As soon as this note appeared on the math arxiv, David Stapleton kindly pointed out to the author a paper by Ein and Lazarsfeld, in which in turn a paper by Konno was cited. Unfortunately the author was not aware of these two papers which contain results that strictly include the ones of this note. The author is very grateful to David Stapleton.

Symmetric products of Galois-Maximal varieties

Abstract:The main result of this paper is the proof that all the symmetric products of a finite Galois-Maximal space are Galois-Maximal spaces. This applies to the special case of real algebraic varieties, solving the problem first stated by Biswas and D'Mello in \cite{biswas&d'mello:symmetric_products_M-curves} about symmetric products of Maximal curves. We also give characterisations of these spaces and state a new definition that generalises to a larger class of spaces. Then, we extend the characterisation in terms of the Borel cohomology given in \cite{us} to the new family. Finally, we introduce the notion of cohomological stability and cohomological splitting, provide a systematic treatment and relate them with the properties of being a Maximal or Galois-Maximal space. These cohomological properties play an important role in the proof of our main theorem.

Abstract:A generic polynomial f(x,y,z) with a prescribed Newton polytope defines a symmetric spatial curve f(x,y,z)=f(y,x,z)=0. We study its geometry: the number, degree and genus of its irreducible components, the number and type of singularities, etc. and discuss to what extent these results generalize to higher dimension and more complicated symmetries. As an application, we characterize generic one-parameter families of complex univariate polynomials, whose Galois group is a complete symmetric group.

Abstract:We compute the Poincaré polynomials of the compactified Jacobians for plane curve singularities with Puiseaux exponents $(nd,md,md+1)$, and relate them to the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers in the non-coprime case. We also confirm a conjecture of Cherednik and Danilenko for such curves.

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field $k$ a conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map of $X$ is a torsion group. In this article we consider a product $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ of smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true for $X$. Additionally, we produce many new examples of non-isogenous elliptic curves $E_1, E_2$ with positive rank over $\mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the natural map $E_1(\mathbb{Q})\otimes E_2(\mathbb{Q})\xrightarrow{\varepsilon} \text{CH}_0(E_1\times E_2)$ is finite, including the first known examples of rank greater than $1$. Combining the two results, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ for which the analogous map $\varepsilon$ has finite image.

Abstract:We introduce a special class of supersingular curves over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$, characterized by the existence of non-integer endomorphisms of small degree. A number of properties of this set is proved. Most notably, we show that when this set partitions into subsets in such a way that curves within each subset have small-degree isogenies between them, but curves in distinct subsets have no small-degree isogenies between them. Despite this, we show that isogenies between these curves can be computed efficiently, giving a technique for computing isogenies between certain prescribed curves that cannot be reasonably connected by searching on $\ell$-isogeny graphs.

Abstract:Let $C$ be an integral and projective curve whose canonical model $C'$ lies on a rational normal scroll $S$ of dimension $n$. We mainly study some properties on $C$, such as gonality and the kind of singularities, in the case where $n=2$ and $C$ is non-Gorenstein, and in the case where $n=3$, the scroll $S$ is smooth, and $C'$ is a local complete intersection inside $S$. We also prove that a rational monomial curve with just one singular point lies on a surface scroll if and only if its gonality is at most $3$, and that it lies on a threefold scroll if and only if its gonality is at most $4$.

Abstract:A classical result of von Staudt states that if eight planes osculate a twisted cubic curve and we divide them into two groups of four, then the eight vertices of the corresponding tetrahedra lie on a twisted cubic curve. In the current paper, we give an alternative proof of this result using modern tools, and at the same time we prove the analogous result for rational normal curves in any projective space. This higher dimensional generalization was claimed without proof in a paper of H.S. White in 1921.

Abstract:We define the minimal plus-one generated curves and prove a result explaining why they are the closest relatives of the free curves, after the nearly free curves. Then we look at the projective closures of the general and of the special fibers of some Briançon-type polynomials constructed by E. Artal Bartolo, Pi. Cassou-Noguès and I. Luengo Velasco. They yield new examples of free, nearly free or minimal plus-one generated curves, as well as counter-examples to the conjecture saying that a supersolvable curve is free. In the final section we give a characterization of plus-one generated curves in terms of eigenscheme ideals, similar to the characterization of free curves given by R. Di Gennaro, G. Ilardi, R.M. Miró-Roig, H. Schenck and J. Vallès in a recent paper. Then we apply this result to the construction of minimal plus-one generated curves obtained by putting together at least two members in a pencil of curves related to Briançon-type polynomials.

Abstract:(abbreviated) We use a semi-numerical approach to study the secular behavior of a system composed of a central star and two massive planets in eccentric co-planar orbits. We show that the secular dynamics of this system can be described using only two parameters, the ratios of the semimajor axes and the planetary masses. The main dynamical features of the system are presented in geometrical pictures that allows us to investigate a large domain of the secular phase space of this three-body problem without time-expensive numerical integrations of the equations of motion, and without any restriction on the magnitude of the planetary eccentricities. We show that three different regimes of secular motion with respect to the secular angle $\Delta\varpi$ are possible: they are circulation, oscillation (around 0 and $180^\circ$), and high eccentricity libration in a nonlinear secular resonance. The first two regimes are a continuous extension of the classical linear secular perturbation theory; the last is a new feature, hitherto unknown, in the secular dynamics of the three-body problem.

Each family is parameterized by an open subset of the Projective line over K. Our construction is based on a remark in a paper by Howe. Later, we describe an obstruction to perusing the same technique over Q.

Abstract:We prove that, if $C$ is a smooth projective curve over the complex numbers, and $E$ is a stable vector bundle on $C$ whose slope does not lie in the interval $[-1,n-1]$, then the associated tautological bundle $E^{[n]}$ on the symmetric product $C^{(n)}$ is again stable. Also, if $E$ is semi-stable and its slope does not lie in the interval $(-1,n-1)$, then $E^{[n]}$ is semi-stable.

Abstract:We construct a class of perturbations of the Cauchy-Riemann equation for maps from curves to a Calabi-Yau threefold, allowing Maslov zero Lagrangian boundary conditions. Our perturbations vanish on components of zero symplectic area. For generic 1-parameter families of perturbations, the locus of solution curves without zero-area components is compact, transversely cut out, and satisfies certain natural coherence properties. In short, we construct an `adequate perturbation scheme' with the needed properties to set up the skein-valued curve counting, as axiomatized in our previous work. The main technical content is the construction, over the Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder Gromov-Witten configuration spaces, of perturbations to which the `ghost bubble censorship' argument can be applied. Certain local aspects of this problem were resolved in our previous work. The key remaining difficulty is to ensure inductive compatibilities, despite the non-existence of marked-point-forgetting maps for the configuration spaces.
