Abstract:Modern hydrodynamic simulations of core-collapse supernovae and neutron-star mergers require knowledge not only of the equilibrium properties of strongly interacting matter, but also of the system's response to perturbations, encoded in various transport coefficients. Using perturbative and holographic tools, we derive here an improved weak-coupling and a new strong-coupling result for the most important transport coefficient of unpaired quark matter, its bulk viscosity. These results are combined in a simple analytic pocket formula for the quantity that is rooted in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at high densities but takes into account nonperturbative holographic input at neutron-star densities, where the system is strongly coupled. This expression can be used in the modeling of unpaired quark matter at astrophysically relevant temperatures and densities.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of predicting the bulk viscosity ($\zeta$) of quark matter in the process of neutron star mergers. Specifically, the researchers used perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) and the holographic method to derive new results for the bulk viscosity of strongly - coupled quark matter under non - equilibrium conditions. These results are of great significance for understanding the gravitational wave signals after neutron star mergers and other observational properties of neutron stars. ### Research Background - **Neutron Star Mergers**: Neutron star mergers are important phenomena in modern astrophysics and can be observed through electromagnetic waves and gravitational waves. These events provide a unique laboratory for studying high - density Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) matter. - **Importance of Bulk Viscosity**: Bulk viscosity is an important transport coefficient that describes the energy dissipation of matter during rapid compression or expansion. During the process of neutron star mergers, the damping effect of bulk viscosity on density oscillations is significant and may leave a detectable mark in the gravitational wave signal after the merger. - **Existing Challenges**: Currently, due to the lack of well - controlled first - principle quantum field theory methods, the predictive ability for bulk viscosity is limited. Perturbative QCD is only applicable to extremely high densities, while the holographic method describes QCD - like theories in the strong - coupling limit. ### Research Methods - **Perturbative QCD**: The researchers used the perturbative QCD method to derive the weakly - coupled results of bulk viscosity under high - density conditions. - **Holographic Method**: Through the holographic method, the researchers obtained the results of bulk viscosity under strongly - coupled conditions for the first time. The holographic method is based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, which links strongly - coupled QCD - like theories with weakly - coupled gravitational theories. ### Main Results - **Analytical Expression of Bulk Viscosity**: The researchers obtained a simplified analytical formula applicable to unpaired quark matter. This formula combines the advantages of perturbative QCD and the holographic method and is applicable to the temperature and density ranges relevant to astrophysics. - **Numerical Results**: Figure 1 shows the variation of the bulk viscosity of neutron star matter with temperature under different models. The results show that the bulk viscosity of quark matter reaches a peak at lower temperatures and is significantly different from the bulk viscosities of nuclear matter and hyperon matter. ### Conclusions - **Qualitative Differences**: The behavior of the bulk viscosity of quark matter is significantly qualitatively different from that of nuclear matter and hyperon matter, which provides a potential means of detecting quark matter during the process of neutron star mergers. - **Application Prospects**: The results of this study can be used in hydrodynamic simulations of neutron star mergers, especially having important application value in predicting the gravitational wave signals after the merger. In conclusion, this paper provides new predictions for the bulk viscosity of strongly - coupled quark matter by combining perturbative QCD and the holographic method, which is of great significance for understanding the physical phenomena in the process of neutron star mergers.
