Abstract:We show that the values of elliptic Dedekind sums, after normalization, are equidistributed mod 1. The key ingredient is a non-trivial bound on generalized Selberg-Kloosterman sums for discrete subgroups of $\PSL_2(\mathbb C)$ using Poincaré series.

Abstract:We show that the graph of normalized elliptic Dedekind sums is dense in its image for arbitrary imaginary quadratic fields, generalizing a result of Ito in the Euclidean case. We also derive some basic properties of Martin's continued fraction algorithm for arbitrary imaginary quadratic fields.

Abstract:Abstract The equation $x^2 + 1 = 0\mod p$ has solutions whenever p = 2 or $4n + 1$. A famous theorem of Fermat says that these primes are exactly the ones that can be described as a sum of two squares. The roots of the former equation are equidistributed is a beautiful theorem of Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec. The angles associated to the representation of such prime as a sum of squares are equidistributed is a famous theorem of Hecke. We give a natural way to associate between roots and angles and prove that the joint equidistribution of the sequence of pairs of roots and angles is equidistributed as well. Our approach involves an automorphic interpretation, which reduces the problem to the study of certain Poincare series on an arithmetic quotient of $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$. Since our Poincare series have a nontrivial dependence on their Iwasawa θ-coordinate, they do not factor into functions on the upper half plane, as in the case studied by Duke et al. Spectral analysis on these higher dimensional varieties involves the nonspherical spectrum, making this paper the first complete study of a nonspherical equidistribution problem, with an arithmetic application. A couple of notable challenges we had to overcome were that of obtaining pointwise bounds for nonspherical Eisenstein series and utilizing a non-spherical analogue of the Selberg inversion formula, which we believe may have further implications beyond this work.

Abstract:Let $P_{k,m}$ denote the Poincaré series of weight $k$ and index $m$ for the full modular group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$, and let $\{P_{k,m}\}$ be a sequence of Poincaré series for which $m(k)$ satisfies $m(k) / k \rightarrow\infty$ and $m(k) \ll k^{\frac{3}{2} - \epsilon}$. We prove that the $L^2$ mass of such a sequence equidistributes on $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathbb{H}$ with respect to the hyperbolic measure as $k$ goes to infinity. As a consequence, we deduce that the zeros of such a sequence $\{P_{k,m}\}$ become uniformly distributed in $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathbb{H}$ with respect to the hyperbolic measure.

Abstract:We prove the Sato--Tate distribution of Kloosterman sums over function fields with explicit error terms, when the places vary in arithmetic progressions or short intervals. A joint Sato--Tate distribution of two ``different" exponential sums is also proved.

Abstract:We study the distribution of the sequence of continued fraction convergents $p_n/q_n$ to a random irrational number in the group $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}_m)$, and in particular the distribution of $p_n \pmod{m}$ and $q_n \pmod{m}$ with a fixed modulus $m$. Improving the strong law of large numbers due to Szüsz, Moeckel, Jager and Liardet, we establish the central limit theorem and the law of the iterated logarithm, as well as the weak and the almost sure invariance principles. As an application, we find the limit distribution of the maximum and the minimum of the Birkhoff sum for the irrational rotation with the indicator of an interval as test function. We also compute the normalizing constant in a classical limit law for the same Birkhoff sum due to Kesten, and dispel a misconception about its dependence on the test interval.

Abstract:Let $mathbf{F}_q$ be a finite field of $q$ elements. We show that the normalized Jacobi sum $J(chi,eta)/sqrt{q}$, for each fixed non-trivial multiplicative character $eta$, becomes equidistributed in the unit circle as $qrightarrow+infty,$ when $chi$ runs over all non-trivial multiplicative characters different from $eta^{-1}.$ Previously, the similar equidistribution was obtained by Katz and Zheng by varying both of $chi$ and $eta$. On the other hand, we also obtain the equidistribution of $J(chi,eta)$ as $(chi,eta)$ runs over $mathcal{X}timesmathcal{Y}subseteq(widehat{mathrm{F}^*})^2$, as long as $|mathcal{X}|u003eq^{frac{1}{2}+varepsilon}$ and $|mathcal{Y}|u003eq^varepsilon$ for any $varepsilonu003e0$. This updates a recent work of Lu, Zheng and Zheng, who require $|mathcal{X}||mathcal{Y}|u003eqlog^2q.$ The main ingredient is the estimate for hypergeometric sums due to Katz.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a holomorphic cuspidal Hecke eigenform for $\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $k$ that is a Saito--Kurokawa lift. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we prove that the mass of $F$ equidistributes on the Siegel modular variety as $k\longrightarrow \infty$. As a corollary, we show under GRH that the zero divisors of Saito--Kurokawa lifts equidistribute as their weights tend to infinity.

$p$-adic equidistribution and an application to $S$-units

Abstract:We prove a Galois equidistribution result for torsion points in $\mathbb G_m^n$ in the $p$-adic setting for test functions of the form $\log |F|_p$ where $F$ is a nonzero polynomial with coefficients in the $p$-adic numbers. Our result includes a power saving quantitative estimate of the decay rate rate of the equidistribution. As an application we show that Ih's Conjecture is true for a class of divisors of $\mathbb G_m^n$.

Abstract:This article addresses an equidistribution problem concerning the zeros of systems of random holomorphic sections of positive line bundles on compact K\"{a}hler manifolds and random polynomials on $\mathbb{C}^{m}$ in the setting of a compact subset. For random polynomials, we consider non-orthonormal bases and prove an equidistribution result which are more general than the previously acquired ones for non-discrete probability measures. More precisely, our result demonstrates that the equidistribution holds true even when the random coefficients in the basis representation are not independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.), and moreover, they are not constrained to any particular probability distribution function. For random holomorphic sections, by extending the concept of a sequence of asymptotically Bernstein-Markov measures introduced by Levenberg, Bloom and Bayraktar in their recent paper to the setting of holomorphic line bundles over compact K\"{a}hler manifolds, we derive a global equidistribution theorem related to the zeros of systems of random holomorphic sections for large tensor powers of a fixed line bundle for any codimension $k$. In both settings using the variance estimation technique in another study of the author with Bojnik plays an important role.

Abstract:Let f traverse a sequence of classical holomorphic newforms of fixed weight and increasing squarefree level q tending to infinity. We prove that the pushforward of the mass of f to the modular curve of level 1 equidistributes with respect to the Poincaré measure. Our result answers affirmatively the squarefree level case of a conjecture spelled out by Kowalski, Michel and Vanderkam (2002) in the spirit of a conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). Our proof follows the strategy of Holowinsky and Soundararajan (2008) who show that newforms of level 1 and large weight have equidistributed mass. The new ingredients required to treat forms of fixed weight and large level are an adaptation of Holowinsky's reduction of the problem to one of bounding shifted sums of Fourier coefficients (which on the surface makes sense only in the large weight limit), an evaluation of the p-adic integral needed to extend Watson's formula to the case of three newforms where the level of one divides but need not equal the common squarefree level of the other two, and some additional technical work in the problematic case that the level has many small prime factors.

Abstract:In the framework of infinite ergodic theory, we derive equidistribution results for suitable weighted sequences of cusp points of Hecke triangle groups encoded by group elements of constant word length with respect to a set of natural generators. This is a generalization of the corresponding results for the modular group, for which we rely on advanced results from infinite ergodic theory and transfer operator techniques developed for AFN-maps.

Motivated by the classical works of Schoenberg, Erdős, Bateman and Diamond on the distribution of $\Phi_1(n)$, we prove results on the joint distribution of $\Phi_k(n)$ for any $k\ge 1$. Abstract:Let $L$ be an even lattice of odd rank with discriminant group $L'/L$, and let $\alpha,\beta \in L'/L$. We prove the Weil bound for the Kloosterman sums $S_{\alpha,\beta}(m,n,c)$ of half-integral weight for the Weil Representation attached to $L$. We obtain this bound by proving an identity that relates a divisor sum of Kloosterman sums to a sparse exponential sum. This identity generalizes Kohnen's identity for plus space Kloosterman sums with the theta multiplier system.

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be a CM elliptic curve and let $p\geq 5$ be a prime of good ordinary reduction for $E$. Suppose that $L(E,s)$ vanishes at $s=1$ and has sign $+1$ in its functional equation, so in particular ${\rm ord}_{s=1}L(E,s)\geq 2$. In this paper we slightly modify a construction of Darmon--Rotger to define a generalised Kato class $\kappa_p\in{\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)$, and prove the following rank two analogue of Kolyvagin's result: \[ \kappa_p\neq 0\quad\Longrightarrow\quad{\rm dim}_{\mathbf{Q}_p}{\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)=2. \] Conversely, when ${\rm dim}_{\mathbf{Q}_p}{\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)=2$ we show that $\kappa_p\neq 0$ \emph{if and only if} the restriction map \[ {\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)\rightarrow E(\mathbf{Q}_p)\hat\otimes\mathbf{Q}_p \] is nonzero. The proof of these results, which extend and strenghten similar results of the author with Hsieh in the non-CM case, exploit a new link between the nonvanishing of generalised Kato classes and a main conjecture in anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory.

Abstract:Dedekind sums are arithmetic sums that were first introduced by Dedekind in the context of elliptic functions and modular forms, and later recognized to be surprisingly ubiquitous. Among the variations and generalizations introduced since, there is a construction of Dedekind sums for lattices in $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{R}). Building upon work of Asai, we prove the reciprocity law for these Dedekind sums, based on a concrete realization of the Euler class. As an application, we obtain an explicit formula expressing Dedekind sums for Hecke triangle groups in terms of continued fractions.

Abstract:We prove an equidistribution result about Hecke orbits on the Picard group of Shimura curves coming from definite quaternion algebras over function fields. In particular, we show the equidistribution of Hecke orbits of supersingular Drinfeld modules of rank 2. Our approach is via the automorphic method, using bounds for coefficients of cuspidal automorphic forms of Drinfeld type as the main tool.

Abstract:By elaborating a two-dimensional Selberg sieve with asymptotics and equidistributions of Kloosterman sums from ℓ-adic cohomology, as well as a Bombieri–Vinogradov type mean value theorem for Kloosterman sums in arithmetic progressions, it is proved that for any given primitive Hecke–Maass cusp form of trivial nebentypus, the eigenvalue of the n-th Hecke operator does not coincide with the Kloosterman sum Kl(1,n) for infinitely many squarefree n with at most 100 prime factors. This provides a partial negative answer to a problem of Katz on modular structures of Kloosterman sums.
