Abstract:In this paper we study the influences of the base points of cubic pencils on the Mordell-Weil groups. Specifically, we investigate and classify the cubic pencils with 8, 7 and 6 base points in general position, and give some applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on studying the influence of the base points of cubic pencils on the Mordell - Weil group. Specifically, the author explores and classifies cubic pencils with 8, 7, and 6 base points in general position, and gives the specific structures of the Mordell - Weil groups of the elliptic fibrations corresponding to these pencils. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Classification and Structure**: For cubic pencils with different numbers of base points, the author classifies these pencils in detail and determines the specific forms of their corresponding Mordell - Weil groups. Specifically: - For the case of 8 base points, the Mordell - Weil group is \( E_8 \). - For the case of 7 base points, the Mordell - Weil group is \( E_7^\vee \). - For the case of 6 base points, the Mordell - Weil group is \( E_6^\vee \). 2. **Theoretical Proof**: The author proves the above classification results through a series of lemmas and theorems. For example, by constructing specific curves and analyzing their properties, the structures of these Mordell - Weil groups are proved. 3. **Applications**: The paper also provides some specific applications, such as re - proving the number of \((- 1)\)-curves on Del Pezzo surfaces. The specific results are as follows: - There are 240 \((-1)\)-curves on the Del Pezzo surface of degree 1. - There are 56 \((-1)\)-curves on the Del Pezzo surface of degree 2. - There are 27 \((-1)\)-curves on the Del Pezzo surface of degree 3. ### Main Theorems 1. **Theorem 1**: Given \( n \) (\( n = 8,7,6 \)) points \( P_1, P_2,\ldots, P_n \) in general position. In the following cases: - 8 points are simple base points of a cubic pencil (actually there are 9 simple base points). - 7 points are the only simple base points of a cubic pencil, and each element is irreducible. - 6 points are the only simple base points of a cubic pencil, and each element is irreducible. The corresponding Mordell - Weil groups of the elliptic fibrations are \( E_8 \), \( E_7^\vee \), and \( E_6^\vee \) respectively. 2. **Theorem 2**: Let \( f: S\rightarrow C = \mathbb{P}^1 \) be an elliptic fibration with a zero section \( O \). If the Mordell - Weil group \( E(K) \) is isomorphic to \( E_8 \), \( E_7^\vee \), or \( E_6^\vee \), then \( f \) can be obtained by blowing up a cubic pencil with exactly 9, 7, or 6 simple base points. 3. **Theorem 3**: Each fibration with Mordell - Weil group \( E_8 \), \( E_7^\vee \), or \( E_6^\vee \) corresponds to the cubic pencils (1), (2), and (3) in Theorem 1 respectively, and these fibrations are isomorphic to one of the following two types under each Mordell - Weil group: - \( E_8 \): \[ y^2 = x^3 + x\left(\sum_{i = 0}^3 p_i t^i\right)+ 3\sum_{i = 0}^3 q_i t^i + t^5 \] \[ y^2 = x^3 + t^2 x^2 + x\left(\sum_{i = 0}^2 p_i t^i\right)+ \sum_{i = 0}^4 q_i t^i + t^5 \] - \( E_7^\vee \): \[ y^2 = x^3 + x(p_0 + p_1 t + t^3)+ \sum_{i = 0}^4 q_i t^i \]
