Abstract:Axions are among the most sought-after candidates for dark matter. In the ultralight regime, they could help alleviate puzzles in small scale cosmology. Searches for a halo of axion dark matter rely on the electromagnetic response to a magnetic field. In this work, we resolve a number of issues in the determination of this response by carefully solving Maxwell's equations in the presence of an axion background. We find that the electric field induced by a magnetic field in an axion background is significant and unsuppressed by the size of the experiment.

Modified Axion Electrodynamics as Impressed Electromagnetic Sources Through Oscillating Background Polarization and Magnetization

Abstract:We present a reformulation of axion modified electrodynamics with all modifications redefined within the constitutive relations between the D,H,B and E fields. This allows the interpretation of the axion induced background bound charge, polarization current and background polarization and magnetization satisfying the charge-current continuity equation. This representation is of similar form to photon sector odd-parity Lorentz invariance violating background fields. We show that when a DC B-field is applied an oscillating background polarization is induced at a frequency equivalent to the axion mass. In contrast, when DC E-field is applied, an oscillating background magnetization is induced at a frequency equivalent to the axion mass. We show that these terms are equivalent to impressed source terms, analogous to the way that voltage and current sources are impressed into Maxwell's equations in circuit and antenna theory. The impressed source terms represent the conversion of external energy into electromagnetic energy, and in the case of axion modified electrodynamics this is due to the inverse Primakoff effect converting energy from axions into photons. The axion induced oscillating polarization under a DC magnetic field is analogous to a permanent polarised electret oscillating at the axion Compton frequency, which sources an electromotive force from an effective impressed magnetic current source. In particular, it is shown that the impressed electrical DC current that drives the solenoidal magnetic DC field of an electromagnet, induces an impressed magnetic current parallel to the DC electrical current, oscillating at the Compton frequency of the axion. We show that the magnetic current drives a voltage source through an electric vector potential and also defines the boundary condition of the oscillating axion induced polarization inside and outside the electromagnet.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.

Abstract:Recently, Schreiber et al. (2024 New J. Phys. 26 043012) have presented the theory of an electron lens acting through the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the field-free opening of a static toroidal magnetic field. In this Comment, three key results of this theory are shown to be incorrect due to six basic calculation errors. The errors are corrected, and three correspondingly modified key results are derived. These results are discussed with respect to the hypothetical lens effect and the underlying Aharonov-Bohm effect.

Abstract:In this paper, we carefully analyze the applicability of the nonlocal current method to sine-Gordon and Zhiber-Mikhailov-Shabat (ZMS) systems within Chang and Rajaraman's nonperturbative framework. As an illustration, the ZMS system is dealt with in detail by using their method. In this nonperturbative framework, only two nonlocal charges exist there for a determined coupling constant β, which together with the topological charge obey merely the algebra relation of quantum group slq(2). If such a finite-dimensional quantum group were regarded as the whole symmetry hidden in the system, the true S-matrix of the ZMS solitons would not be obtained.
On the Schwinger effect during axion inflation

Abstract:Pair-creation of charged particles in a strong gauge-field background - the renowned Schwinger effect - can strongly alter the efficiency of gauge-field production during axion inflation. It is therefore crucial to have a clear understanding and proper description of this phenomenon to obtain reliable predictions for the physical observables in this model. In the present work, we revisit the problem of Schwinger pair-production during axion inflation in the presence of both electric and magnetic fields and improve on the state of the art in two ways: (i) taking into account that the electric- and magnetic-field three-vectors are in general noncollinear, we derive the vector decomposition of the Schwinger-induced current in terms of these fields and determine the corresponding effective electric and magnetic conductivities; (ii) by identifying the physical momentum scale associated with the pair-creation process, we incorporate Schwinger damping of the gauge field in a scale-dependent fashion in the relevant equations of motion. Implementing this new description in the framework of the gradient-expansion formalism, we obtain numerical results in a benchmark scenario of axion inflation and perform a comprehensive comparison with earlier results in the literature. In some cases, the resulting energy densities of the produced gauge fields differ from the old results by more than one order of magnitude, which reflects the importance of taking the new effects into account.

Abstract:Starting from the theory of Axion Electrodynamics, we work out the axionic modifications to the electromagnetic Casimir energy using the Green's function, both when the axion field is initially assumed purely time-dependent and when the axion field configuration is a static domain wall. For the first case it means that the oscillating axion background is taken to resemble an axion fluid at rest in a conventional Casimir setup with two infinite parallel conducting plates, while in the second case we evaluate the radiation pressure acting on an axion domain wall. We extend previous theories in order to include finite temperatures. Various applications are discussed. 1. We review the theory of Axion Electrodynamics and particularly the energy-momentum conservation in a linear dielectric and magnetic material. We treat this last aspect by extending former results by Brevik and Chaichian (2022) and Patkos (2022). 2. Adopting the model of the oscillating axion background we discuss the axion-induced modifications to the Casimir force between two parallel plates by using a Green's function approach. 3. We calculate the radiation pressure acting on an axion domain wall at finite temperature T. Our results for an oscillating axion field and a domain wall are also useful for condensed matter physics, where "axionic topological insulators" interact with the electromagnetic field with a Chern-Simons interaction, like the one in Axion Electrodynamics, and there are experimental systems analogous to time-dependent axion fields and domain walls as the ones showed by Jiang, Q. D., \& Wilczek, F. (2019) and Fukushima et al. (2019). 4. We compare our results, where we assume time-dependent or space-dependent axion configurations, with the discussion of the optical activity of Axion Electrodynamics by Sikivie (2021) and Carrol et al. (1990).

Abstract:In a recent article, Ayala et al. [Phys. Rev. D 73, 105009 (2006)] have studied the dynamical generation of masses for fundamental fermions in strongly coupled QED in the presence of weak magnetic fields. We argue that the results and conclusions of the article are not reliable as they are subject to gauge dependent artifacts resulting from an inconsistent truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations.

On the oscillating electric dipole moment induced by axion-fermion couplings

Abstract:It has been recently claimed that the axion coupling to fermions is responsible for an oscillating electric dipole moment (EDM) in the background of axion dark matter. In this work, we re-examine the derivation of this effect. Contrary to previous studies, we point out the physical relevance of an axion boundary term, which is crucial in restoring the axion shift symmetry and drastically affects the EDM phenomenology. To describe the latter, we introduce the notion of a time-averaged effective axion EDM, which encodes the boundary term and whose magnitude depends on the oscillation regime. For slow oscillations, the boundary term washes out the standard oscillating EDM, resulting in an exact cancellation in the static limit. Conversely, during fast oscillations, the boundary term amplifies the effective EDM relatively to the standard EDM contribution. This observable is especially interesting in the case of the electron EDM. For an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ axion-electron coupling, the overall size of the effective EDM in the regime of intermediate or fast oscillations is comparable to the present static EDM limit.

Abstract:We present a concise review of selected parts of axion electrodynamics and its application to Casimir physics. We present the general formalism including the boundary conditions at a dielectric surface, derive the dispersion relation in the case where the axion parameter has a constant spatial derivative in the direction normal to the conducting plates, and calculate the Casimir energy for the simple case of scalar electrodynamics using dimensional regularization.

Abstract:We review a recent letter published in Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{116}$, 161804 (2016) of which the main argument is that the mode dependent magnetic form factors at axion haloscopes depend on the position of the cavity inside the solenoid while the corresponding electric form factors do not. We, however, find no such dependence, which is also equivalent to the statement that the electric and corresponding magnetic energy stored in the cavity modes are the same regardless of the position of the cavity inside the solenoid. Furthermore, we extend the statement to the cases satisfying $\vec{\nabla}\times\vec{B}_{\rm external}=0$, where $\vec{B}_{\rm external}$ is a static magnetic field provided by a magnet at an axion haloscope. Two typical magnets, solenoidal and toroidal, satisfy $\vec{\nabla}\times\vec{B}_{\rm external}=0$, thus the electric and corresponding magnetic energy stored in the cavity modes are always the same in both cases. The energy, however, is independent of the position of the cavity in axion haloscopes with a solenoid, but depends on those with a toroidal magnet.

Dual origin of effective axion response

Abstract:Effective axion fields in condensed matter and photonics are manifested as $\mathcal{P}$- and $\mathcal{T}$-odd contributions to the electromagnetic response. Here, we show that the phenomena previously attributed to the effective axion fields have two distinct physical origins. One of them corresponds to the standard axion electrodynamics, while another provides its dual-symmetric version having the same symmetry and featuring similar but distinguishable optical properties. We present an example system described by the dual-symmetric modification of axion electrodynamics, derive the key predictions and pinpoint experimentally observable distinctions between the two versions of axion-type response.

Abstract:In the Standard Model of particle physics, the axial current is not conserved, due both to fermion masses and to the axial anomaly. Using perturbative quantum chromodynamics, we calculate matrix elements of the local and non-local axial current for a gluon target, clarifying their connection with the axial anomaly. In so doing, we also reconsider classic results obtained in the context of the nucleon spin sum rule as well as recent results for off-forward kinematics. An important role is played by the infrared regulator, for which we put a special emphasis on the nonzero quark mass. We highlight cancellations that take place between contributions from the axial anomaly and the quark mass, and we elaborate on the relation of those cancellations with the conservation of angular momentum.

Abstract:Axion inflation coupled to Abelian gauge fields via a Chern-Simons-like term of the form $\phi F\tilde{F}$ represents an attractive inflationary model with a rich phenomenology, including the production of magnetic fields, black holes, gravitational waves, and the matter-antimatter asymmetry. In this work, we focus on a particular regime of axion inflation, the so-called Anber-Sorbo (AS) solution, in which the energy loss in the gauge-field production provides the dominant source of friction for the inflaton motion. We revisit the AS solution and confirm that it is unstable. Contrary to earlier numerical works that attempted to reach the AS solution starting from a regime of weak backreaction, we perform, for the first time, a numerical evolution starting directly from the regime of strong backreaction. Our analysis strongly suggests that, at least as long as one neglects spatial inhomogeneities in the inflaton field, the AS solution has no basin of attraction, not even a very small one that might have been missed in previous numerical studies. Our analysis employs an arsenal of analytical and numerical techniques, some established and some newly introduced, including (1) linear perturbation theory along the lines of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2209.08131" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.08131">arXiv:2209.08131</a>, (2) the gradient expansion formalism (GEF) developed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2109.01651" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2109.01651">arXiv:2109.01651</a>, (3) a new linearized version of the GEF, and (4) the standard mode-by-mode approach in momentum space in combination with input from the GEF. All these methods yield consistent results confirming the instability of the AS solution, which renders the dynamics of axion inflation in the strong-backreaction regime even more interesting than previously believed.

Abstract:In the paper by João F. Melo "The propagator matrix reloaded" (SciPost Phys. Core 6, 019 (2023), <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.09119" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.09119">arXiv:2112.09119</a>) the author provides a derivation of a formalism which includes interactions in the initial conditions for non-equilibrium quantum field theory. The main statement of this paper is that one cannot ignore interactions in the initial conditions, so quantum field theories at finite temperature are not free in the infinite past. In this comment we revise in details calculations from the section 5 of the paper and demonstrate explicitly that the main statement of this paper should be reconsidered.

Fermion condensates induced by axial interactions and cosmological implications

Abstract:We reveal the presence of a new source of axial current due to the condensed vacuum generated by the spin-spin interaction. To show this, we consider a quartic Dirac Lagrangian containing a spin-spin interaction term, possibly originating from torsion in Einstein-Cartan-like theories. We use a mean field approach to analyze the quantized theory. We show that the diagonalization of the field Hamiltonian defines a new vacuum state, energetically favored with respect to the free vacuum. Such a vacuum, which is a condensate of particle-antiparticle pairs, is characterized by a nontrivial expectation value of the axial current operator. The new source of axial current, here obtained, can have effects both at the atomic level and at the astrophysical-cosmological level depending on the origin of the spin-spin interaction term. The condensate spontaneously breaks Lorentz symmetry, therefore it implies the possibility of CPT violation in the early universe. Furthermore the condensate induces a new source term in the gravitational field equations and may affect the dark sector of the universe at cosmological level.
