Astrophysics as a Service: Turning radio astronomy as an opportunity to impact society and businesses

Abstract:For more than 25 years, the Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía has been directing efforts from basic research and radio astronomy development to technology transfer projects around Argentina's National Space Plan and to Small and Medium Enterprises. With the surge of COVID-19, our organization's transformation accelerated, bringing new opportunities and challenges which can be applied to impact health, education, processes and businesses. In this article, we explore our efforts to bridge the gap between basic science and the needs of our society.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?

This paper discusses how the Institute of Radio Astronomy (IAR) in Argentina has translated its research in astronomy and radio technology into social and commercial impact. The article points out that since the late 1990s, IAR has actively participated in the national space program and collaborated with small and medium-sized enterprises on technology transfer projects. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the organization's transformation, providing new opportunities for healthcare, education, and business process innovation.

IAR's work covers several areas, including the development of medical devices such as image-based microwave tomography scanners and non-invasive mechanical ventilators, radar technology, and satellite projects. The institute also engages in collaboration with the science and technology system to address social needs and bridge the gap between basic science and societal demands.

The paper discusses the theoretical frameworks of technology transfer, such as the Sabato-Botana triangle, the Hersch model, and the concept of open science and innovation, emphasizing the importance of these models in promoting collaboration and innovation in Latin America and globally. IAR is committed to establishing partnerships with small and medium-sized enterprises by providing expertise, resources, and infrastructure support for their development.

Despite challenges such as high-risk investments, market uncertainty, and long-term perspectives, IAR has successfully achieved technology transfer by providing consultancy services, leveraging technology networks, and focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises, which have had positive impacts on society and the economy. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, IAR responded quickly and designed non-invasive ventilators and other response measures, demonstrating its ability to apply scientific research to practical problems.
