Abstract:In this paper, we study upper bounds on the minimum length of frameproof codes introduced by Boneh and Shaw to protect copyrighted materials. A $q$-ary $(k,n)$-frameproof code of length $t$ is a $t \times n$ matrix having entries in $\{0,1,\ldots, q-1\}$ and with the property that for any column $\mathbf{c}$ and any other $k$ columns, there exists a row where the symbols of the $k$ columns are all different from the corresponding symbol (in the same row) of the column $\mathbf{c}$. In this paper, we show the existence of $q$-ary $(k,n)$-frameproof codes of length $t = O(\frac{k^2}{q} \log n)$ for $q \leq k$, using the Lovász Local Lemma, and of length $t = O(\frac{k}{\log(q/k)}\log(n/k))$ for $q > k$ using the expurgation method. Remarkably, for the practical case of $q \leq k$ our findings give codes whose length almost matches the lower bound $\Omega(\frac{k^2}{q\log k} \log n)$ on the length of any $q$-ary $(k,n)$-frameproof code and, more importantly, allow us to derive an algorithm of complexity $O(t n^2)$ for the construction of such codes.

A $k^{\frac{q}{q-2}}$ Lower Bound for Odd Query Locally Decodable Codes from Bipartite Kikuchi Graphs

Abstract:A code $C \colon \{0,1\}^k \to \{0,1\}^n$ is a $q$-query locally decodable code ($q$-LDC) if one can recover any chosen bit $b_i$ of the message $b \in \{0,1\}^k$ with good confidence by querying a corrupted string $\tilde{x}$ of the codeword $x = C(b)$ in at most $q$ coordinates. For $2$ queries, the Hadamard code is a $2$-LDC of length $n = 2^k$, and this code is in fact essentially optimal. For $q \geq 3$, there is a large gap in our understanding: the best constructions achieve $n = \exp(k^{o(1)})$, while prior to the recent work of [AGKM23], the best lower bounds were $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^{\frac{q}{q-2}})$ for $q$ even and $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^{\frac{q+1}{q-1}})$ for $q$ odd. The recent work of [AGKM23] used spectral methods to prove a lower bound of $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^3)$ for $q = 3$, thus achieving the "$k^{\frac{q}{q-2}}$ bound" for an odd value of $q$. However, their proof does not extend to any odd $q \geq 5$. In this paper, we prove a $q$-LDC lower bound of $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^{\frac{q}{q-2}})$ for any odd $q$. Our key technical idea is the use of an imbalanced bipartite Kikuchi graph, which gives a simpler method to analyze spectral refutations of odd arity XOR without using the standard "Cauchy-Schwarz trick", a trick that typically produces random matrices with correlated entries and makes the analysis for odd arity XOR significantly more complicated than even arity XOR.

Linear Hashing with $\ell_\infty$ guarantees and two-sided Kakeya bounds

Abstract:We show that a randomly chosen linear map over a finite field gives a good hash function in the $\ell_\infty$ sense. More concretely, consider a set $S \subset \mathbb{F}_q^n$ and a randomly chosen linear map $L : \mathbb{F}_q^n \to \mathbb{F}_q^t$ with $q^t$ taken to be sufficiently smaller than $ |S|$. Let $U_S$ denote a random variable distributed uniformly on $S$. Our main theorem shows that, with high probability over the choice of $L$, the random variable $L(U_S)$ is close to uniform in the $\ell_\infty$ norm. In other words, {\em every} element in the range $\mathbb{F}_q^t$ has about the same number of elements in $S$ mapped to it. This complements the widely-used Leftover Hash Lemma (LHL) which proves the analog statement under the statistical, or $\ell_1$, distance (for a richer class of functions) as well as prior work on the expected largest 'bucket size' in linear hash functions [ADMPT99]. By known bounds from the load balancing literature [RS98], our results are tight and show that linear functions hash as well as trully random function up to a constant factor in the entropy loss. Our proof leverages a connection between linear hashing and the finite field Kakeya problem and extends some of the tools developed in this area, in particular the polynomial method.

Codes with restricted overlaps: expandability, constructions, and bounds

Abstract:Consider a $q$-ary block code satisfying the property that no $l$-letters long codeword's prefix occurs as a suffix of any codeword for $l$ inside some interval. We determine a general upper bound on the maximum size of these codes and a tighter bound for codes where overlaps with lengths not exceeding $k$ are prohibited. We then provide constructions for codes with various restrictions on overlap lengths and use them to determine lower bounds on the maximum sizes. In particular, we construct $(1,k)$-overlap-free codes where $k \geq n/2$ and $n$ denotes the block size, expand a known construction of $(k,n-1)$-overlap-free codes, and combine the ideas behind both constructions to obtain $(t_1,t_2)$-overlap-free codes and codes that are simultaneously $(1,k)$- and $(n-k,n-1)$-overlap-free for some $k < n/2$. In the case when overlaps of lengths between 1 and $k$ are prohibited, we complete the characterisation of non-expandable codes started by Cai, Wang, and Feng (2023).

Abstract:We study the combinatorial function L(k, q), the maximum number of nonzero weights a linear code of dimension k over ${\mathbb {F}}_q$ can have. We determine it completely for $q=2,$ and for $k=2,$ and provide upper and lower bounds in the general case when both k and q are $\ge 3.$ A refinement L(n, k, q), as well as nonlinear analogues N(M, q) and N(n, M, q), are also introduced and studied.
Improved Lower Bounds for all Odd-Query Locally Decodable Codes

Abstract:We prove that for every odd $q\geq 3$, any $q$-query binary, possibly non-linear locally decodable code ($q$-LDC) $E:\{\pm1\}^k \rightarrow \{\pm1\}^n$ must satisfy $k \leq \tilde{O}(n^{1-2/q})$. For even $q$, this bound was established in a sequence of prior works. For $q=3$, the above bound was achieved in a recent work of Alrabiah, Guruswami, Kothari and Manohar using an argument that crucially exploits known exponential lower bounds for $2$-LDCs. Their strategy hits an inherent bottleneck for $q \geq 5$. Our key insight is identifying a general sufficient condition on the hypergraph of local decoding sets called $t$-approximate strong regularity. This condition demands that 1) the number of hyperedges containing any given subset of vertices of size $t$ (i.e., its co-degree) be equal to the same but arbitrary value $d_t$ up to a multiplicative constant slack, and 2) all other co-degrees be upper-bounded relative to $d_t$. This condition significantly generalizes related proposals in prior works that demand absolute upper bounds on all co-degrees. We give an argument based on spectral bounds on Kikuchi Matrices that lower bounds the blocklength of any LDC whose local decoding sets satisfy $t$-approximate strong regularity for any $t \leq q$. Crucially, unlike prior works, our argument works despite having no non-trivial absolute upper bound on the co-degrees of any set of vertices. To apply our argument to arbitrary $q$-LDCs, we give a new, greedy, approximate strong regularity decomposition that shows that arbitrary, dense enough hypergraphs can be partitioned (up to a small error) into approximately strongly regular pieces satisfying the required relative bounds on the co-degrees.

An Exponential Lower Bound for Linear 3-Query Locally Correctable Codes

Abstract:We prove that the blocklength $n$ of a linear $3$-query locally correctable code (LCC) $\mathcal{L} \colon {\mathbb F}^k \to {\mathbb F}^n$ with distance $\delta$ must be at least $n \geq 2^{\Omega\left(\left(\frac{\delta^2 k}{(|{\mathbb F}|-1)^2}\right)^{1/8}\right)}$. In particular, the blocklength of a linear $3$-query LCC with constant distance over any small field grows exponentially with $k$. This improves on the best prior lower bound of $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^3)$ [AGKM23], which holds even for the weaker setting of $3$-query locally decodable codes (LDCs), and comes close to matching the best-known construction of $3$-query LCCs based on binary Reed-Muller codes, which achieve $n \leq 2^{O(k^{1/2})}$. Because there is a $3$-query LDC with a strictly subexponential blocklength [Yek08, Efr09], as a corollary we obtain the first strong separation between $q$-query LCCs and LDCs for any constant $q \geq 3$. Our proof is based on a new upgrade of the method of spectral refutations via Kikuchi matrices developed in recent works [GKM22, HKM23, AGKM23] that reduces establishing (non-)existence of combinatorial objects to proving unsatisfiability of associated XOR instances. Our key conceptual idea is to apply this method with XOR instances obtained via long-chain derivations, a structured variant of low-width resolution for XOR formulas from proof complexity [Gri01, Sch08].

Abstract:The $p$-ary linear code $\mathcal C_{k}(n,q)$ is defined as the row space of the incidence matrix $A$ of $k$-spaces and points of $\text{PG}(n,q)$. It is known that if $q$ is square, a codeword of weight $q^k\sqrt{q}+\mathcal O \left( q^{k-1} \right) $ exists that cannot be written as a linear combination of at most $\sqrt{q}$ rows of $A$. Over the past few decades, researchers have put a lot of effort towards proving that any codeword of smaller weight does meet this property. We show that if $ q \geqslant 32 $ is a composite prime power, every codeword of $\mathcal C_k(n,q)$ up to weight $\mathcal O \left( {q^k\sqrt{q}} \right) $ is a linear combination of at most $\sqrt{q}$ rows of $A$. We also generalise this result to the codes $\mathcal C_{j,k}(n,q) $, which are defined as the $p$-ary row span of the incidence matrix of $k$-spaces and $j$-spaces, $j < k$.

On the maximum size of variable-length non-overlapping codes

Abstract:Non-overlapping codes are a set of codewords such that the prefix of each codeword is not a suffix of any codeword in the set, including itself. If the lengths of the codewords are variable, it is additionally required that every codeword is not contained in any other codeword as a subword. Let $C(n,q)$ be the maximum size of $q$-ary fixed-length non-overlapping codes of length $n$. The upper bound on $C(n,q)$ has been well studied. However, the nontrivial upper bound on the maximum size of variable-length non-overlapping codes of length at most $n$ remains open. In this paper, by establishing a link between variable-length non-overlapping codes and fixed-length ones, we are able to show that the size of a $q$-ary variable-length non-overlapping code is upper bounded by $C(n,q)$. Furthermore, we prove that the average length of the codewords in a $q$-ary variable-length non-overlapping codes is lower bounded by $\lceil \log_q \tilde{C} \rceil$, and is asymptotically no shorter than $n-2$ as $q$ approaches $\infty$, where $\tilde{C}$ denotes the cardinality of $q$-ary variable-length non-overlapping codes of length up to $n$.

Linear Codes from Projective Linear Anticodes Revisited

Abstract:An anticode ${\bf C} \subset {\bf F}_q^n$ with the diameter $\delta$ is a code in ${\bf F}_q^n$ such that the distance between any two distinct codewords in ${\bf C}$ is at most $\delta$. The famous Erdös-Kleitman bound for a binary anticode ${\bf C}$ of the length $n$ and the diameter $\delta$ asserts that $$|{\bf C}| \leq \Sigma_{i=0}^{\frac{\delta}{2}} \displaystyle{n \choose i}.$$ In this paper, we give an antiGriesmer bound for $q$-ary projective linear anticodes, which is stronger than the above Erdös-Kleitman bound for binary anticodes. The antiGriesmer bound is a lower bound on diameters of projective linear anticodes. From some known projective linear anticodes, we construct some linear codes with optimal or near optimal minimum distances. A complementary theorem constructing infinitely many new projective linear $(t+1)$-weight code from a known $t$-weight linear code is presented. Then many new optimal or almost optimal few-weight linear codes are given and their weight distributions are determined. As a by-product, we also construct several infinite families of three-weight binary linear codes, which lead to $l$-strongly regular graphs for each odd integer $l \geq 3$.

Equidistant Linear Codes in Projective Spaces

Abstract:Linear codes in the projective space $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$, the set of all subspaces of the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, were first considered by Braun, Etzion and Vardy. The Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}_q(n,k)$ is the collection of all subspaces of dimension $k$ in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$. We study equidistant linear codes in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$ in this paper and establish that the normalized minimum distance of a linear code is maximum if and only if it is equidistant. We prove that the upper bound on the size of such class of linear codes is $2^n$ when $q=2$ as conjectured by Braun et al. Moreover, the codes attaining this bound are shown to have structures akin to combinatorial objects, viz. \emph{Fano plane} and \emph{sunflower}. We also prove the existence of equidistant linear codes in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$ for any prime power $q$ using \emph{Steiner triple system}. Thus we establish that the problem of finding equidistant linear codes of maximum size in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$ with constant distance $2d$ is equivalent to the problem of finding the largest $d$-intersecting family of subspaces in $\mathbb{G}_q(n, 2d)$ for all $1 \le d \le \lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor$. Our discovery proves that there exist equidistant linear codes of size more than $2^n$ for every prime power $q > 2$.

Abstract:Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field consisting of $q$ elements and let $\Gamma_{k}(V)$ be the Grassmann graph formed by $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$, $1<k<n-1$. Denote by $\Gamma(n,k)_{q}$ the restriction of $\Gamma_{k}(V)$ to the set of all non-degenerate linear $[n,k]_{q}$ codes. We show that for any two codes the distance in $\Gamma(n,k)_{q}$ coincides with the distance in $\Gamma_{k}(V)$ only in the case when $n<(q+1)^2+k-2$, i.e. if $n$ is sufficiently large then for some pairs of codes the distances in the graphs $\Gamma_{k}(V)$ and $\Gamma(n,k)_{q}$ are distinct. We describe one class of such pairs.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q=p^m$. In this paper, we study $\mathbb{F}_q\mathcal{R}$-skew cyclic codes where $\mathcal{R}=\mathbb{F}_q+u\mathbb{F}_q$ with $u^2=u$. To characterize $\mathbb{F}_q\mathcal{R}$-skew cyclic codes, we first establish their algebraic structure and then discuss the dual-containing properties by considering a non-degenerate inner product. Further, we define a Gray map over $\mathbb{F}_q\mathcal{R}$ and obtain their $\mathbb{F}_q$-Gray images. As an application, we apply the CSS (Calderbank-Shor-Steane) construction on Gray images of dual containing $\mathbb{F}_q\mathcal{R}$-skew cyclic codes and obtain many quantum codes with better parameters than the best-known codes available in the literature.

Abstract:By employing algebraic curves, we give some new asymptotic bounds for (q-1)-ary and (q+1)-ary codes, where q >; 2 is a prime power. In particular, our asymptotic bound for (q-1)-ary codes improves on the bound obtained directly from alphabet restriction given by Tafasman and Vlăduţ , [Th. 1.3.19], while our asymptotic bound for (q+1) -ary codes includes Elkies' result for the square q case (STOC 01) (however, the idea in this paper is different from Elkies' one). Our constructions of asymptotically good nonlinear codes are NOT the same as Goppa's construction of algebraic geometry codes in the sense that we consider evaluation of functions at some pole points as well.

Abstract:This paper studies the construction for quantum codes with parameters $((n,K,d))_{p}$ by use of an \textit{n}-variable logic function with APC distance $d'\ge 2$ over ${\rm {\mathbb F}}_{p} $, where $d$ is related to $d'$. We obtain $d\le d'$ and the maximal $K$ for all $d=d'-k$, $0\le k\le d'-2$. We also discuss the basic states and the equivalent conditions of saturating quantum Singleton bound.

Abstract:Determining the maximum number of unit vectors in Rr with no pairwise inner product exceeding α is a fundamental problem in geometry and coding theory. In 1955, Rankin resolved this problem for all α⩽0 , and in this paper, we show that the maximum is (2+o(1))r for all 0⩽α≪r−2/3 , answering a question of Bukh and Cox. Moreover, the exponent −2/3 is best possible. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound on the size of a q ‐ary code with block length r and distance (1−1/q)r−o(r1/3) , which is tight up to the multiplicative factor 2(1−1/q)+o(1) for any prime power q and infinitely many r . When q=2 , this resolves a conjecture of Tietäväinen from 1980 in a strong form and the exponent 1/3 is best possible. Finally, using a recently discovered connection to q ‐ary codes, we obtain analogous results for set‐coloring Ramsey numbers.

New Explicit Good Linear Sum-Rank-Metric Codes

Abstract:Sum-rank-metric codes have wide applications in universal error correction, multishot network coding, space-time coding and the construction of partial-MDS codes for repair in distributed storage. Fundamental properties of sum-rank-metric codes have been studied and some explicit or probabilistic constructions of good sum-rank-metric codes have been proposed. In this paper we give three simple constructions of explicit linear sum-rank-metric codes. In finite length regime, numerous larger linear sum-rank-metric codes with the same minimum sum-rank distances as the previous constructed codes can be derived from our constructions. For example several better linear sum-rank-metric codes over ${\bf F}_q$ with small block sizes and the matrix size $2 \times 2$ are constructed for $q=2, 3, 4$ by applying our construction to the presently known best linear codes. Asymptotically our constructed sum-rank-metric codes are close to the Gilbert-Varshamov-like bound on sum-rank-metric codes for some parameters. Finally we construct a linear MSRD code over an arbitrary finite field ${\bf F}_q$ with various square matrix sizes $n_1, n_2, \ldots, n_t$ satisfying $n_i \geq n_{i+1}^2+\cdots+n_t^2$ , $i=1, 2, \ldots, t-1$, for any given minimum sum-rank distance. There is no restriction on the block lengths $t$ and parameters $N=n_1+\cdots+n_t$ of these linear MSRD codes from the sizes of the fields ${\bf F}_q$. \end{abstract}

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the achievable rate of perfect hash code. For an integer $$q\ge 2$$ , a perfect q-hash code C is a block code over $$[q]:=\{1,\ldots ,q\}$$ of length n in which every subset $$\{{\textbf{c}}_1,{\textbf{c}}_2,\dots ,{\textbf{c}}_q\}$$ of q elements is separated, i.e., there exists $$i\in [n]$$ such that $$\{\textrm{proj}_i({\textbf{c}}_1),\dots ,\textrm{proj}_i({\textbf{c}}_q)\}=[q]$$ , where $$\textrm{proj}_i({\textbf{c}}_j)$$ denotes the ith position of $${\textbf{c}}_j$$ . Finding the maximum size M(n, q) of perfect q-hash codes of length n, for given q and n, is a fundamental problem in combinatorics, information theory, and computer science. In this paper, we are interested in asymptotic behavior of this problem. Precisely speaking, we will focus on the quantity $$R_q:=\limsup _{n\rightarrow \infty }\frac{\log _2 M(n,q)}{n}$$ . A well-known probabilistic argument shows an existence lower bound on $$R_q$$ , namely $$R_q\ge \frac{1}{q-1}\log _2\left( \frac{1}{1-q!/q^q}\right) $$ (Fredman and Komlós, SIAM J Algebr Discrete Methods 5(1):61–68, 1984; Körner, SIAM J Algebr Discrete Methods 7(4):560–570, 1986). This is still the best-known lower bound till now except for the case $$q=3$$ (Körner and Marton, Eur J Comb 9(6):523–530, 1988). The improved lower bound of $$R_3$$ was discovered in 1988 and there has been no progress on the lower bound of $$R_q$$ for more than 30 years. In this paper we show that this probabilistic lower bound can be improved for q from 4 to 15 and all odd integers between 17 and 25, and all sufficiently large q.

Abstract:Separating codes have their applications in collusion-secure fingerprinting for generic digital data, while they are also related to the other structures including hash family, intersection code and group testing. In this paper we study upper bounds for separating codes. First, some new upper bound for restricted separating codes is proposed. Then we illustrate that the Upper Bound Conjecture for separating Reed-Solomon codes inherited from Silverberg's question holds true for almost all Reed-Solomon codes.

Bounds and Constructions for Linear Locally Repairable Codes over Binary Fields

Abstract:For binary $[n,k,d]$ linear locally repairable codes (LRCs), two new upper bounds on $k$ are derived. The first one applies to LRCs with disjoint local repair groups, for general values of $n,d$ and locality $r$, containing some previously known bounds as special cases. The second one is based on solving an optimization problem and applies to LRCs with arbitrary structure of local repair groups. Particularly, an explicit bound is derived from the second bound when $d\geq 5$. A specific comparison shows this explicit bound outperforms the Cadambe-Mazumdar bound for $5\leq d\leq 8$ and large values of $n$. Moreover, a construction of binary linear LRCs with $d\geq6$ attaining our second bound is provided.
