Abstract:The local atomic structure and lattice dynamics of two isostructural layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), 1T-TiSe$_2$ and 1T-VSe$_2$, were studied using temperature-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ti, V, and Se K-edges. Analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra, employing reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations, enabled tracking the temperature evolution of the local environment in the range of 10-300 K. The atomic coordinates derived from the final atomic configurations were used to calculate the partial radial distribution functions (RDFs) and the mean-square relative displacement (MSRD) factors for the first ten coordination shells around the absorbing atoms. Characteristic Einstein frequencies and effective force constants were determined for Ti-Se, Ti-Ti, V-Se, V-V, and Se-Se atom pairs from the temperature dependencies of MSRDs. The obtained results reveal differences in the temperature evolution of lattice dynamics and the strengths of intralayer and interlayer interactions in TiSe$_2$ and VSe$_2$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses the local structure and lattice dynamics of two-layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) - titanium diselenide (1T-TiSe2) and vanadium diselenide (1T-VSe2) at different temperatures. The study uses reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation method of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). By analyzing the XAS spectra of Ti, V, and Se K absorption edges, the local environment changes of the materials within the temperature range of 10-300K are studied. The authors found that although 1T-TiSe2 and 1T-VSe2 have the same crystal structure, there are differences in their lattice dynamics with temperature variations. By analyzing the EXAFS spectra, they calculated the mean square relative displacement (MSRD) of different atomic pairs to evaluate the strength of internal and interlayer interactions. The results showed that the effective force constants between Ti-Ti, Ti-Se, Se-Se, V-Se, V-V, and Se-Se in TiSe2 and VSe2 are different, indicating significant differences in their interlayer and intralayer interactions. In addition, the study also revealed that the MSRD of V-V bonds in VSe2 increases rapidly with increasing temperature, showing anomalous behavior different from that observed in TiSe2. This may be related to the particularity of interlayer interactions in VSe2. With these data, the researchers were able to quantify the changes in the local structure and lattice dynamics of TMDs with temperature, providing new insights into the charge density wave (CDW) behavior of these materials.
