Abstract:We present the first \emph{ab initio} calculation of elastic Compton scattering from 4He. It is carried out to $\mathcal{O}(e^2 \delta^3)$ [N3LO] in the $\delta$ expansion of $\chi$EFT. At this order and for this target, the only free parameters are the scalar-isoscalar electric and magnetic dipole polarisabilities of the nucleon. Adopting current values for these yields a parameter-free prediction. This compares favourably with the world data from HI$\gamma$S, Illinois and Lund for photon energies $50\;\mathrm{MeV}\lesssim\omega\lesssim120\;\mathrm{MeV}$ within our theoretical uncertainties of $\pm10\%$. We predict a cross section up to 7 times that for deuterium. As in 3He, this emphasises and tests the key role of meson-exchange currents between np pairs in Compton scattering on light nuclei. We assess the sensitivity of the cross section and beam asymmetry to the nucleon polarisabilities, providing clear guidance to future experiments seeking to further constrain them. The calculation becomes tractable by use of the Transition Density Method. Abstract:To access information on the internal structure of the nucleon, data from a variety of scattering experiments can be analyzed in regimes where the information factorizes from an otherwise known scattering amplitude. A recent development, promising new insight, is the study of exclusive reactions in the backward kinematical region, where the information can be encoded in transition distribution amplitudes. We model the photon-to-nucleon transition distribution amplitudes, entering the factorized description of backward timelike Compton scattering, using techniques of light-front dynamics to integrate information from a quark model for the photon and the nucleon. Electron scattering on $^4$He from coupled-cluster theory

Abstract:We present a coupled-cluster calculation for the electron-$^4$He scattering in the region of the quasi-elastic peak. We show the longitudinal and transverse responses separately, and discuss results within two distinct theoretical methods: the Lorentz integral transform and spectral functions. The comparison between them allows to investigate the role of final state interactions, two-body currents and relativistic effects.

First-Principles Modeling of Quantum Nuclear Effects and Atomic Interactions in Solid 4He at High Pressure

Abstract:We present a first-principles computational study of solid 4He at T=0K and pressures up to 160GPa. Our computational strategy consists in using van der Waals density functional theory (DFT-vdW) to describe the electronic degrees of freedom in this material, and the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method to solve the Schrodinger equation describing the behavior of the quantum nuclei. For this, we construct an analytical interaction function based on the pairwise Aziz potential that closely matches the volume variation of the cohesive energy calculated with DFT-vdW in dense helium. Interestingly, we find that the kinetic energy of solid 4He does not increase appreciably with compression for P > 85GPa. Also, we show that the Lindemann ratio in dense solid 4He amounts to 0.10 almost independently of pressure. The reliability of customary quasi-harmonic DFT (QH DFT) approaches in the description of quantum nuclear effects in solids is also studied. We find that QH DFT simulations, although provide a reasonable equation of state in agreement with experiments, are not able to reproduce correctly these critical effects in compressed 4He. In particular, we disclose huge discrepancies of at least ~50% in the calculated 4He kinetic energies using both the QH DFT and present DFT-DMC methods.
Derivation of transition density from the observed 4He(e,e')4He(0^+_2) form factor raising the alpha-particle monopole puzzle

Abstract:Recently, the monopole transition form factor of the electron-scattering excitation of the 0^+_2 state (E_x=20.21 MeV) of the 4He nucleus was observed over a broad momentum transfer range (0.5 < q^2 < 5.0 fm^-2) with dramatically improved preision compared with older sets of data; modern nuclear forces, including those derived from the chiral effective field theory, failed to reproduce the form factor, which is called the alpha-particle monopole puzzle. To resolve this puzzle by improving the study of spatial structure of the 0^+_2 state, we derive in this letter a possible 0^+_1 --> 0^+_2 transition density \rho_tr(r) for r > 1 fm from the observed form factor. The shape of the transition density is significantly different from that obtained theoretically in the literature

Abstract:We extend the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating-group method to include three-nucleon (3N) interactions for the description of nucleon-nucleus collisions. We outline the formalism, give algebraic expressions for the 3N-force integration kernels, and discuss computational aspects of two alternative implementations. The extended theoretical framework is then applied to nucleon-4He scattering using similarity-renormalization-group (SRG) evolved nucleon-nucleon plus three-nucleon potentials derived from chiral effective field theory. We analyze the convergence properties of the calculated phase shifts and explore their dependence upon the SRG evolution parameter. We include up to six excited states of the 4He target and find significant effects from the inclusion of the chiral 3N force, e.g., it enhances the spin-orbit splitting between the 3/2- and 1/2- resonances and leads to an improved agreement with the phase shifts obtained from an accurate R-matrix analysis of the five-nucleon experimental data. We find remarkably good agreement with measured differential cross sections at various energies, while analyzing powers manifest larger deviations from experiment for certain energies and angles.

Abstract:The structure of hadrons relevant for deep-inelastic scattering are completely characterised by the Compton amplitude. A direct calculation of the Compton amplitude in a lattice QCD setup provides a way to accessing the structure functions, circumventing the operator mixing and renormalisation issues of the standard operator product expansion approach. In this contribution, we focus on the QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration's advances in calculating the forward Compton amplitude via an implementation of the second-order Feynman-Hellmann theorem. We highlight our progress in investigating the moments of nucleon structure functions.

Abstract:A likelihood analysis of the observables in deeply virtual exclusive photoproduction off a proton target, $ep \rightarrow e' p' \gamma'$, is presented. Two processes contribute to the reaction: deeply virtual Compton scattering, where the photon is produced at the proton vertex, and the Bether-Heitler process, where the photon is radiated from the electron. We consider the unpolarized process for which the largest amount of data with all the kinematic dependences are available from corresponding datasets with unpolarized beams and unpolarized targets from Jefferson Lab. We provide and use a method which derives a joint likelihood of the Compton form factors, which parametrize the deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitude in QCD, for each observed combination of the kinematic variables defining the reaction. The unpolarized twist-two cross section likelihood fully constrains only three of the Compton form factors (CFFs). The impact of the twist-three corrections to the analysis is also explored. The derived likelihoods are explored using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Using our proposed method we derive CFF error bars and covariances. Additionally, we explore methods which may reduce the magnitude of error bars/contours in the future.

An interaction kernel is computed in baryon chiral perturbation theory and sewn to phenomenological deuteron wave functions. As an appetizer, we consider a computation of the pion-deuteron scattering length using this method.

Abstract:We revisit the kinematics of Compton scattering (electron-photon interactions producing electrons and photons in the exit channel) covering the full range of energy/momenta distribution between the two colliding particles, with a dedicated view to statistical properties of secondary beams that are generated in beam-beam collisions. Starting from the Thomson inverse scattering, where electrons do not recoil and photons are backscattered to higher energies by a Lorentz boost effect (factor 4γ2 ), we analyze three transition points, separating four regions. These are in sequence, given by increasing the electron recoil (numbers are for transition points and letters for regions): (a) Thomson backscattering, (1) equal sharing of total energy in the exit channel between electron and photon, (b) deep recoil regime where the bandwidth/energy spread of the two interacting beams are exchanged in the exit channel, (2) electron is stopped, i.e., taken down at rest in the laboratory system by colliding with an incident photon of mc2/2 energy, (c) electron backscattering region, where incident electron is backscattered by the incident photon, and (3) symmetric scattering, when the incident particles carry equal and opposite momenta, so that in the exit channel they are backscattered with same energy/momenta, and (d) Compton scattering [ ála Arthur Compton, see A. J. Compton, A quantum theory of the scattering of X-rays by light elements, Phys. Rev. 21 , 83 (1923)], where photons carry an energy much larger than the colliding electron energy. Low-Energy Compton Scattering in Materials

Abstract:Low-energy Compton scattering is an important background for sub-GeV dark matter direct-detection and other experiments. Current Compton scattering calculations typically rely on assumptions that are not valid in the low-energy region of interest, beneath ~ 50 eV. Here we relate the low-energy Compton scattering differential cross section to the dielectric response of the material. Our new approach can be used for a wide range of materials and includes all-electron, band structure, and collective effects, which can be particularly relevant at low energies. We demonstrate the strength of our approach in several solid-state systems, in particular Si, Ge, GaAs, and SiC, which are relevant for current and proposed experiments searching for dark matter, neutrinos, and millicharged particles.

Proton internal pressure from deeply virtual Compton scattering on collider kinematics

Abstract:The unique experimental connection to the QCD energy-momentum tensor offered by generalised parton distributions has been strongly highlighted in the past few years with attempts to extract the pressure and shear forces distributions within the nucleon. If, in principle, this can be performed in a model independent way from experimental data, in practice, the current limited precision and kinematic coverage make such an extraction very challenging. Moreover, the limitation to a leading-order description in the strong coupling of the data has provided only an indirect and weakly sensitive access to gluon degrees of freedoms, solely through their mixing to quarks via evolution. In this paper we address this issue by pro viding a next-to-leading order formalism allowing a reanalysis of global fits with genuine gluonic degrees of freedom. In addition, we provide an estimate of the reduction in uncertainty that could stem from the extended kinematic range relevant for the future Electron Ion Collider. Finally, we stress the connection between the analysis of the dispersion relation in terms of generalised parton distributions and the deconvolution problem.

Abstract:We give an overview of low-energy Compton scattering (gamma^(*) p --> gamma p) with a real or virtual incoming photon. These processes allow the investigation of one of the fundamental properties of the nucleon, i.e. how its internal structure deforms under an applied static electromagnetic field. Our knowledge of nucleon polarisabilities and their generalization to non-zero four-momentum transfer will be reviewed, including the presently ongoing experiments and future perspectives.

Abstract:We propose a candidate Compton amplitude which is valid for any (integer) quantum spin and free from any spurious poles. We consider the cases of electromagnetism and gravity. We obtain such amplitudes by calculating the corresponding ones from superstring theory involving states on the leading Regge trajectory. To extract the associated field-theory amplitudes a few considerations in the form of simple physical constraints are required, such as: Soft momentum transfer, compactification of polarizations and consistent factorization in the physical channels. We believe the present exploration will be significantly relevant for the physics of compact binary systems with spin.
