Abstract:We study automorphism and birational automorphism groups of varieties over fields of positive characteristic from the point of view of Jordan and $p$-Jordan property. In particular, we show that the Cremona group of rank $2$ over a field of characteristic $p>0$ is $p$-Jordan, and the birational automorphism group of an arbitrary geometrically irreducible algebraic surface is nilpotently $p$-Jordan of class at most $2$. Also, we show that the automorphism group of a smooth geometrically irreducible projective variety of non-negative Kodaira dimension is Jordan in the usual sense.

Abstract:The main theme of this paper is that singular automorphic forms on classical groups are given by theta series liftings. We establish several inequalities relating the automorphic multiplicities of a given representation and that of its abstract theta lift. Our methods allow one to lift noncuspidal, square integrable automorphic forms when the dual pair involved is in the stable range. In this way we construct new families of singular automorphic forms, many of which are clearly unipotent. In fact, starting from one-dimensional representations and repeating the procedure (of lifting in the stable range), one may obtain all automorphic forms which are quadratic unipotent in the sense of Moeglin.

We show results devoted to smooth plane quartics that are invariant under the action of the elementary abelian group of type $[2,2,2]$, and we study geometric properties of the smooth plane quartic having automorphism group of order $48$.

Abstract:For each field $k$ of characteristic zero, we classify which groups act by automorphisms on a quartic del Pezzo surface over $k$. We also determine which groups act on $k$-rational, stably $k$-rational, or $k$-unirational quartic del Pezzo surfaces. For each group $G$ that is realized over $k$, we exhibit explicit equations for a quartic del Pezzo surface $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^4_k$ such that $G$ acts by automorphisms on $X$.

Abstract:Bernstein-Schwarzman conjectured that the quotient of a complex affine space by an irreducible complex crystallographic group generated by reflections is a weighted projective space. The conjecture was proved by Schwarzman and Tokunaga-Yoshida in dimension 2 for almost all such groups, and for all crystallographic reflection groups of Coxeter type by Looijenga, Bernstein-Schwarzman and Kac-Peterson in any dimension. We prove that the conjecture is true for the crystallographic reflection group in dimension 3 for which the associated collineation group is Klein's simple group of order 168. In this case the quotient is the 3-dimensional weighted projective space with weights 1, 2, 4, 7. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the algebra of invariant theta functions. Unlike the Coxeter case, the invariant algebra is not free polynomial, and this was the major stumbling block.

Abstract:In this paper we find the largest automorphism group of a smooth cubic surface over any finite field of characteristic $2.$ We prove that if the order of the field is a power of $4,$ then the automorphism group of maximal order of~a~smooth cubic surface over this field is $\mathrm{PSU}_4(\mathbb{F}_2).$ If the order of the field of characteristic $2$ is not a power of $4,$ then we prove that the automorphism group of maximal order of a smooth cubic surface over this field is the symmetric group of degree $6.$ Moreover, we prove that smooth cubic surfaces with such properties are unique up to isomorphism.

Abstract:We prove several results concerning automorphism groups of quasismooth complex weighted projective hypersurfaces; these generalize and strengthen existing results for hypersurfaces in ordinary projective space. First, we prove in most cases that automorphisms extend to the ambient weighted projective space. We next provide a characterization of when the linear automorphism group is finite and find an explicit uniform upper bound on the size of this group. Finally, we describe the automorphisms of a generic quasismooth hypersurface with given weights and degree.

Abstract:We find sharp upper bounds on the order of the automorphism group of a hypersurface in complex projective space in every dimension and degree. In each case, we prove that the hypersurface realizing the upper bound is unique up to isomorphism and provide explicit generators for the automorphism group. Similar results were recently proven independently by S. Yang, X. Yu, and Z. Zhu using different methods.

Abstract:In this article we give two explicit families of automorphisms of degree $\leq 3$ of the affine $3$-space $\mathbb{A}^3$ such that each automorphism of degree $\leq 3$ of $\mathbb{A}^3$ is a member of one of these families up to composition of affine automorphisms at the source and target; this shows in particular that all of them are tame. As an application, we give the list of all dynamical degrees of automorphisms of degree $\leq 3$ of $\mathbb{A}^3$; this is a set of $3$ integers and $9$ quadratic integers. Moreover, we also describe up to compositions with affine automorphisms for $n\geq 1$ all morphisms $\mathbb{A}^3 \to \mathbb{A}^n$ of degree $\leq 3$ with the property that the preimage of every affine hyperplane in $\mathbb{A}^n$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{A}^2$.

Automorphism Groups of Finite Extensions of Fields and the Minimal Ramification Problem

Abstract:We study the following question: given a global field $F$ and finite group $G$, what is the minimal $r$ such that there exists a finite extension $K/F$ with $\mathrm{Aut}(K/F)\cong G$ that is ramified over exactly $r$ places of $F$? We conjecture that the answer is $\le 1$ for any global field $F$ and finite group $G$. In the case when $F$ is a number field we show that the answer is always $\le 4[F:\mathbb Q]$. We show that assuming Schinzel's Hypothesis H the answer is always $\le 1$ if $F$ is a number field. We show unconditionally that the answer is always $\le 1$ if $F$ is a global function field. We also show that for a broader class of fields $F$ than previously known, every finite group $G$ can be realized as the automorphism group of a finite extension $K/F$ (without restriction on the ramification). An important new tool used in this work is a recent result of the author and C. Tsang, which says that for any finite group $G$ there exists a natural number $n$ and a subgroup $H\leqslant S_n$ of the symmetric group such that $N_{S_n}(H)/H\cong G$.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field. The connected monodromy field of $A$ is the minimal field over which the images of all the $\ell$-adic torsion representations have connected Zariski closure. We show that for all even $g \geq 4$, there exist infinitely many geometrically nonisogenous abelian varieties $A$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ of dimension $g$ where the connected monodromy field is strictly larger than the field of definition of the endomorphisms of $A$. Our construction arises from explicit families of hyperelliptic Jacobians with definite quaternionic multiplication.
