As a corollary, if \eqref{one} holds, $\max(B)\leq \max(A)$ and either $\gcd(A)=1$ or else $\gcd(A+B)=1$ and $|A+B|\leq 2|A|+|B|-3$, then $A+B$ contains an arithmetic progression with difference 1 and length $|A|+|B|-1$.

Abstract:In 1956, Je$\acute{s}$manowicz conjectured that, for positive integers $m$ and $n$ with $m>n, \, \gcd(m,\, n)=1$ and $m\not\equiv n\pmod{2}$, the exponential Diophantine equation $(m^2-n^2)^x+(2mn)^y=(m^2+n^2)^z$ has only the positive integer solution $(x,\,y,\, z)=(2,\,2,\,2)$. Recently, Ma and Chen \cite{MC17} proved the conjecture if $4\not|mn$ and $y\ge2$. In this paper, we present an elementary proof of the result of Ma and Chen \cite{MC17}.

Abstract:We study the equation (x‚ąí4r)3+(x‚ąí3r)3+(x‚ąí2r)3+(x‚ąír)3+x3+(x+r)3+(x+2r)3+(x+3r)3+(x+4r)3=yp , which is a natural continuation of previous works carried out by A. Arg√°ez-Garc√≠a and the fourth author (perfect powers that are sums of cubes of a three, five and seven term arithmetic progression). Under the assumptions 0 , p‚Č•5 a prime and gcd(x,r)=1 , we show that solutions must satisfy xy=0 . Moreover, we study the equation for prime exponents 2 and 3 in greater detail. Under the assumptions r>0 a positive integer and gcd(x,r)=1 we show that there are infinitely many solutions for p=2 and p=3 via explicit constructions using integral points on elliptic curves. We use an amalgamation of methods in computational and algebraic number theory to overcome the increased computational challenge. Most notable is a significant computational efficiency obtained through appealing to Bilu, Hanrot and Voutier's Primitive Divisor Theorem and the method of Chabauty, as well as employing a Thue equation solver earlier on.

Abstract:If A is a dense subset of the integers, then A+A+A contains long arithmetic progressions. This problem has been studied by many people, but results of sparse sets are hard to obtain. In this paper, we prove that if A is a subset of the primes less than n with cardinality αn/logn, then A+A+A contains a long arithmetic progression of length at least{nc1α2/logα−1if α⩾(1/logloglogn)c0,c2α5(logα−1)−1nc3α4/logα−1if α⩾(1/logn)c0′.

Abstract:Let $p(n)$ be the partition function. Ahlgren and Ono conjectured that every arithmetic progression contains infinitely many integers $N$ for which $p(N)$ is not congruent to $0\pmod{3}$. Radu proved this conjecture in 2010 using work of Deligne and Rapoport. In this note, we give a simpler proof of Ahlgren and Ono's conjecture in the special case where the modulus of the arithmetic progression is a power of $3$ by applying a method of Boylan and Ono and using work of Bellaïche and Khare generalizing Serre's results on the local nilpotency of the Hecke algebra.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Let $a_i$ denote the coefficient of $q^i$ in the polynomial $\prod_{j=1}^n\prod_{k=1}^{p-1}(1-q^{pj-k})^s$, where $p$ is an odd prime, and $n, s$ are positive integers. In this note, we prove that $$\Big|\sum_{i=b \text{mod} 2pn}a_i-\frac{(p-1)p^{sn-1}}{2n}\Big|\leq p^{sn/2},$$ if $b$ is divisible by $p$, and $$\Big|\sum_{i=b \text{mod} 2pn}a_i+\frac{p^{sn-1}}{2n}\Big|\leq p^{sn/2},$$ if $b$ is not divisible by $p$. Abstract:The problem of the least prime number in an arithmetic progression is one of the most important topics in Number Theory. In [11], we are the first to study the relations between this problem and Goldbach's conjecture. In this paper, we further consider its applications to Goldbach's conjecture and refine the result in [11]. Moreover, we also try to generalize the problem of the least prime number in an arithmetic progression and give an analogy of Goldbach's conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that the size of the product set of any finite arithmetic progression $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathbb{Z}$ satisfies \[|\mathcal A \cdot \mathcal A| \ge \frac{|\mathcal A|^2}{(\log |\mathcal A|)^{2\theta +o(1)} } ,\] where $2\theta=1-(1+\log\log 2)/(\log 2)$ is the constant appearing in the celebrated Erdős multiplication table problem. This confirms a conjecture of Elekes and Ruzsa from about two decades ago. If instead $\mathcal{A}$ is relaxed to be a subset of a finite arithmetic progression in integers with positive constant density, we prove that \[|\mathcal A \cdot \mathcal A | \ge \frac{|\mathcal A|^{2}}{(\log |\mathcal A|)^{2\log 2- 1 + o(1)}}. \] This solves the typical case of another conjecture of Elekes and Ruzsa on the size of the product set of a set $\mathcal{A}$ whose sumset is of size $O(|\mathcal{A}|)$. Our bounds are sharp up to the $o(1)$ term in the exponents. We further prove asymmetric extensions of the above results.
