Abstract:Interactive storytelling is vital for preschooler development. While children's interactive partners have traditionally been their parents and teachers, recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked a surge of AI-based storytelling and reading technologies. As these technologies become increasingly ubiquitous in preschoolers' lives, questions arise regarding how they function in practical storytelling and reading scenarios and, how parents, the most critical stakeholders, experience and perceive these technologies. This paper investigates these questions through a qualitative study with 17 parents of children aged 3-6. Our findings suggest that even though AI-based storytelling and reading technologies provide more immersive and engaging interaction, they still cannot meet parents' expectations due to a series of interactive and algorithmic challenges. We elaborate on these challenges and discuss the possible implications of future AI-based interactive storytelling technologies for preschoolers.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Aims to Address This paper aims to explore the needs, experiences, and perceptions of parents when using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to support interactive storytelling and reading activities for preschool children. Specifically, the study focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Current Acceptance and Usage**: Understanding the level of acceptance and actual usage of AI-based storytelling technologies and tools by parents. 2. **Perceived Benefits**: Exploring the benefits that parents believe these technologies bring. 3. **Challenges Encountered**: Analyzing the practical problems and challenges parents face when using these tools. 4. **Expectations for Future Technologies**: Understanding parents' expectations for future AI-based intelligent storytelling technologies. ### Background and Motivation Interactive storytelling is crucial for the development of preschool children, as it not only helps improve language and literacy skills but also enhances communication skills, cultural and emotional awareness, and other cognitive developments. However, due to limitations in time, skills, and knowledge, modern parents may not always be able to engage in high-quality interactive storytelling. In recent years, with the development of AI technology, an increasing number of AI tools and systems have been designed to support interactive storytelling activities for preschool children. These tools include applications on smartphones or tablets, physically embodied robotic toys (such as Alpha Egg, Luka, Codi), and general voice assistant technologies (such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Siri). Despite the great potential demonstrated by these AI tools and technologies, their effectiveness in practical applications and how parents, as the most important stakeholders, experience and perceive these technologies still need to be thoroughly explored. Existing research mainly focuses on evaluating the functionality and effectiveness of these technologies in experimental settings, lacking an in-depth understanding of long-term use in real-world contexts. Additionally, parents' needs and perceptions have largely been overlooked, which may affect the effectiveness of these technologies in practical applications. ### Research Methods To fill this research gap, the authors conducted qualitative research by interviewing 17 parents of 3-6-year-old preschool children. The research process included the following steps: 1. **Participant Recruitment**: Using the snowball sampling method, 17 parents were recruited, all of whom had 3-6-year-old preschool children and had experience using AI-based storytelling tools. 2. **Data Collection**: Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data on parents' daily storytelling practices, the AI tools they used and their experiences, the challenges they encountered, and their expectations for future technologies. 3. **Data Analysis**: Thematic analysis was used to summarize and code the interview data, extracting the main research themes. ### Main Findings The study found that parents hold a cautiously optimistic attitude towards AI-based interactive storytelling technologies. Although these technologies provide a more immersive and engaging interactive experience, there are still a series of interaction and algorithmic challenges that prevent existing tools from fully meeting parents' expectations. Parents hope that AI technology can reduce their burden and support high-quality parent-child interactive storytelling, but current technologies have not yet achieved this goal. ### Design Implications Based on the research findings, the authors propose design suggestions for future AI-based interactive storytelling technologies to better meet the actual needs of parents and children. These suggestions include: 1. **Enhancing Interactivity and Adaptability**: Designing more natural and flexible interaction methods so that AI tools can better adapt to the needs and responses of different children. 2. **Increasing Parental Involvement**: Ensuring that parents can actively participate in the use of AI tools, providing guidance and support. 3. **Transparency and Explainability**: Increasing the transparency of AI systems so that parents can understand and trust these technologies. 4. **Ethics and Privacy Protection**: Ensuring that the design and use of AI technologies comply with ethical standards and protect the privacy of children and parents. ### Conclusion Through qualitative research involving 17 parents, this study provides an in-depth understanding of parents' experiences and challenges when using AI-based storytelling tools, offering valuable insights for the design and development of future AI technologies. The research results emphasize the important role of parents in practical applications and propose specific suggestions for improving AI technologies to better support parent-child interactive storytelling.
