Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.
Poles, Residues and Siegel-Weil Identities of Degenerate Eisenstein Series on Split Exceptional Groups of Type $E_n$

Abstract:This manuscript has two goals: 1. To write an explicit description of the degenerate residual spectrum of the split, simple, simply-connected, exceptional groups of type $E_n$ (for $n=6,7,8$). 2. To set a practical guide for similar calculations and, in particular, to describe various methods of ``computational representation theory'' relevant to the study of residues of automorphic Eisenstein series. In Part I we supply background information and notations from the theory of automorphic representations as well as concrete information on the exceptional groups of type $E_n$ and their representation theory over non-Archimedean local fields. In Part II we make a systematic study of the residual spectrum of these groups where each chapter is devoted to a certain aspect of theory, it begins with methodical section and continues with sections devoted to the results for each of these groups. We describe completely the residual (square-integrable and non-square integrable) spectrum of the groups of type $E_6$ and $E_7$ and an almost complete description in the case of the group of type $E_8$. We also study and list Siegel-Weil like identities between residual representations of these groups and list the Arthur parameters for their square-integrable residual representations.

Abstract:We determine the poles of the Eisenstein series on a general linear group, induced from two Speh representations, $\Delta(\tau,m_1)|\cdot|^s\times\Delta(\tau,m_2)|\cdot|^{-s}$, $Re(s)\geq 0$, where $\tau$ is an irreducible, unitary, cuspidal, automorphic representation of $GL_n({\bf A})$. The poles are simple and occur at $s=\frac{m_1+m_2}{4}-\frac{i}{2}$, $0\leq i\leq min(m_1,m_2)-1$. Our methods also show that when $m_1=m_2$, the above Eisenstein series vanish at s=0.

Abstract:Let $F$ be an archimedean local field and let $E$ be $F\times F$ (resp. a quadratic extension of $F$). We prove that an irreducible generic (resp. nearly tempered) representation of $\operatorname{GL}_n(E)$ is $\operatorname{GL}_n(F)$ distinguished if and only if its Rankin-Selberg (resp. Asai) $L$-function has an exceptional pole of level zero at $0$. Further, we deduce a necessary condition for the ramification of such representations using the theory of weak test vectors developed by Humphries and Jo.

Exceptional zeros for Heegner points and $p$-converse to the theorem of Gross-Zagier and Kolyvagin

Abstract:We prove a $p$-converse to the theorem of Gross-Zagier and Kolyvagin for elliptic curves $E/\mathbf{Q}$ at primes $p>3$ of multiplicative reduction. Two key ingredients in the argument are an extension to this setting of a $p$-adic formula of Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna obtained in our earlier work, and an exceptional zero formula for Heegner points. By independent approaches different from ours, a similar $p$-converse theorem was obtained by Skinner--Zhang under additional ramification hypotheses on $E[p]$, and by Venerucci assuming finiteness of the $p$-primary part of the Tate-Shafarevich group.

Abstract:Let G G be the unramified unitary group U ( 2 , 1 ) ( E / F ) U(2, 1)(E/F) defined over a non-archimedean local field F F of odd residue characteristic p p , and let K K be a maximal compact open subgroup of G G . For an irreducible smooth F ̄ p \overline {\mathbf {F}}_p -representation π \pi of G G , and a weight σ \sigma of K K contained in π \pi , we prove that π \pi admits eigenvectors for the spherical Hecke algebra H ( K , σ ) \mathcal {H}(K, \sigma ) . Our approach is close to that of Barthel–Livné [Duke Math. J. 75 (1994), pp. 261–292] for G L 2 GL_2 . For G L n ( n ≥ 3 ) GL_n (n\geq 3) , we give a sketch of an essential case where the analogue of a crucial ingredient in loc.cit fails.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a totally real number field. For each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ above $p$ we construct a Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak{p}}$ acting on $(\text{mod}\,p^{m})$ Katz Hilbert modular classes which agrees with the classical Hecke operator at $\mathfrak{p}$ for global sections that lift to characteristic zero. Using these operators and the techniques of patching complexes of Calegari and Geraghty we prove that the Galois representations arising from torsion Hilbert modular classes of parallel weight $\mathbf{1}$ are unramified at $p$ when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]=2$ . Some partial and some conjectural results are obtained when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]>2$ .

Abstract:We compute the p-adic L-function (in the sense of Pollack-Stevens and Bellaiche) of the "evil twin" Eisenstein series. We use Solomon's Shintani cocycle to construct a p-adic Shintani modular symbol, and show how to specialize this modular symbol to overconvergent modular symbols with the same p-adic L-function as evil/critical-slope Eisenstein series. This gives a new proof of recent results of Bellaiche and Dasgupta.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an affine or hyperbolic rank 2 Kac--Moody group over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $X=X_{q+1}$ be the Tits building of $G$, the $q+1$--homogeneous tree. Let $\Gamma$ be a nonuniform lattice in $G$. When $\Gamma=P_i^-$, $i=1,2$, the standard parabolic subgroup for the negative $BN$--pair, the quotient graph $P^-_i\backslash X$ is the positive half of the fundamental apartment of $X$, a semi-infinite ray. We define Eisenstein series on $P_1^-\backslash X$. We prove convergence of Eisenstein series in a half space. This uses Iwasawa decomposition of the Haar measure on $G$. A crucial tool is a description of the vertices of $X$ in terms of Iwasawa cells, which we give. We prove meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series using the Selberg--Bernstein continuation principle. This requires an analog of integral operators on the Tits building and the classical truncation operator for Eisenstein series, which we construct.

Abstract:We study algebras of meromorphic modular forms whose poles lie on Heegner divisors for orthogonal and unitary groups associated to root lattices. We give a uniform construction of $147$ hyperplane arrangements on type IV symmetric domains for which the algebras of modular forms with constrained poles are free and therefore the Looijenga compactifications of the arrangement complements are weighted projective spaces. We also construct $8$ free algebras of modular forms on complex balls with poles on hyperplane arrangements. The most striking example is the discriminant kernel of the $2U\oplus D_{11}$ lattice, which admits a free algebra on $14$ meromorphic generators. Along the way, we determine minimal systems of generators for non-free algebras of orthogonal modular forms for $26$ reducible root lattices and prove the modularity of formal Fourier--Jacobi series associated to them. By exploiting an identity between weight one singular additive and multiplicative lifts on $2U\oplus D_{11}$, we prove that the additive lift of any (possibly weak) theta block of positive weight and $q$-order one is a Borcherds product; the special case of holomorphic theta blocks of one elliptic variable is the theta block conjecture of Gritsenko, Poor and Yuen.

Abstract:We consider the residues at the poles in the right half plane of Eisenstein series, on symplectic groups, or their double covers, induced from Speh representations. We show that for each such pole, there is a unique maximal nilpotent orbit, attached to Fourier coefficients admitted by the corresponding residual representation. We find this orbit in each case.

Abstract:We construct a basis for the space of half-integral weight Siegel Eisenstein series of level 4N where N is odd and square-free. Then we restrict our attention to those Eisenstein series generated from elements of $\Gamma_0(4)$, commenting on why this restriction is necessary for our methods. We directly apply to these forms all Hecke operators attached to odd primes, and we realize the images explicitly as linear combinations of Siegel Eisenstein series. Using this information, we diagonalize the subspace of Eisenstein series generated from elements of $\Gamma_0(4)$, obtaining a multiplicity-one result.

Abstract:Based on Garland's work, in this paper we construct the Eisenstein series on the adelic loop groups over a number field, induced from either a cusp form or a quasi-character which is assumed to be unramified. We compute the constant terms, prove their absolute and uniform convergence under the affine analog of Godement's criterion. For the case of quasi-characters the resulting formula is an affine Gindikin-Karpelevich formula. Then we prove the convergence of Eisenstein series themselves in certain analogs of Siegel subsets.

Abstract:Abstract We formulate and prove a version of the arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula for (zero dimensional) Shimura varieties attached to tori, equipped with some additional data. More precisely, we define a family of “special” divisors in terms of Green functions at archimedean and non-archimedean places and prove that their degrees coincide with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series. The proof relies on the usual Siegel–Weil formula to provide a direct link between both sides of the identity, and in some sense, offers a more conceptual point of view on prior results in the literature.

Eisenstein classes and generating series of modular symbols in $\mathrm{SL}_N$

Abstract:We define a theta lift between the homology in degree $N-1$ of a locally symmetric space associated to $\mathrm{SL}_N(\mathbb{R})$ and the space of modular forms of weight $N$. We show that the Fourier coefficients of this lift are Poincaré duals to modular symbols associated to maximal parabolic subgroups. The constant term is a canonical cohomology classes obtained by transgressing the Euler class of a torus bundle. This Eisenstein lift realizes a geometric theta correspondence for the pair $\mathrm{SL}_N \times \mathrm{SL}_2$, in the spirit of Kudla-Millson. When $N=2$, we show that the lift surjects on the space of weight $2$ modular forms spanned by an Eisenstein series and the eigenforms with non-vanishing $L$-function.
