Abstract:The higher order contact of a quadric with a surface in $3$-space at a non-degenerate point is obtained by the Moutard quadric in the Darboux direction. In this paper, we discuss the extension of this result to hypersurfaces in arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce an important class of surfaces, namely, quadrics in the Euclidean 3-space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$. We prove that planes, spheres and circular cylinders are the only quadric surfaces whose Gauss map $\boldsymbol{G}$ satisfies a relation of the form $\Delta^{I}\boldsymbol{G}= M \boldsymbol{G}$, where $M$ is a square matrix of order 3 and $\Delta^{I}$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator corresponding to the first fundamental form $I$ of the surface.

Abstract:A tensor product surface $\mathscr{S}$ is an algebraic surface that is defined as the closure of the image of a rational map $\phi$ from $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ to $\mathbb{P}^3$. We provide new determinantal representations of $\mathscr{S}$ under the assumptions that $\phi$ is generically injective and its base points are finitely many and locally complete intersections. These determinantal representations are matrices that are built from the coefficients of linear relations (syzygies) and quadratic relations of the bihomogeneous polynomials defining $\phi$. Our approach relies on a formalization and generalization of the method of moving quadrics introduced and studied by David Cox and his co-authors.

Abstract:We study Hilbert schemes of quadrics of dimension $k \in \{0,1,2,3\}$ on smooth Gushel-Mukai varieties $X$ of dimension $n \in \{2,3,4,5,6\}$ by relating them to the relative Hilbert schemes of linear subspaces of dimension $k + 1$ of a certain family, naturally associated with $X$, of quadrics of dimension $n - 1$ over the blowup of $\mathbf{P}^5$ at a point.

Abstract:Given a smooth genus three curve $C$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with trivial determinant embeds in $\mathbb{P}^8$ as a hypersurface whose singular locus is the Kummer threefold of $C$; this hypersurface is the Coble quartic. Gruson, Sam and Weyman realized that this quartic could be constructed from a general skew-symmetric fourform in eight variables. Using the lines contained in the quartic, we prove that a similar construction allows to recover SU$_C(2, L)$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with fixed determinant of odd degree L, as a subvariety of $G(2, 8)$. In fact, each point $p \in C$ defines a natural embedding of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$ in $G(2, 8)$. We show that, for the generic such embedding, there exists a unique quadratic section of the Grassmannian which is singular exactly along the image of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$, and thus deserves to be coined the Coble quadric of the pointed curve $(C, p)$.

Abstract:We recall the definition of Poncelet varieties that generalize the celebrated Poncelet curves introduced by Darboux. We show that any quadric and any smooth cubic in the projective space of dimension three is a Poncelet surface but that a general surface of degree greater than four is not.

Abstract:The linear orbit of a degree d hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ is its orbit under the natural action of PGL(n+1), in the projective space of dimension $N =\binom{n+d}{d} - 1$ parameterizing such hypersurfaces. This action restricted to a specific hypersurface $X$ extends to a rational map from the projectivization of the space of matrices to $\mathbb{P}^N$. The class of the graph of this map is the predegree polynomial of its corresponding hypersurface. The objective of this paper is threefold. First, we formally define the predegree polynomial of a hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$, introduced in the case of plane curves by Aluffi and Faber, and prove some results in the general case. A key result in the general setting is that a partial resolution of said rational map can contain enough information to compute the predegree polynomial of a hypersurface. Second, we compute the leading term of the predegree polynomial of a smooth quadric in $\mathbb{P}^n$ over an algebraically closed field with characteristic 0, and compute the other coefficients in the specific case n = 3. In analogy to Aluffi and Faber's work, the tool for computing this invariant is producing a (partial) resolution of the previously mentioned rational map which contains enough information to obtain the invariant. Third, we provide a complete resolution of the rational map, which in principle could be used to compute more refined invariants.

The Giroux Correspondence in dimension 3

Abstract:In an earlier paper, the authors proved the Giroux Correspondence for tight contact $3$-manifolds via convex Heegaard surfaces. Simultaneously, Breen, Honda and Huang gave an all-dimensions proof of the Giroux Correspondence by generalising convex surface theory to higher dimensions. This paper uses a key result about relations of bypasses to complete the $3$-dimensional proof for arbitrary (not necessarily tight) contact 3-manifolds. This presentation features low-dimensional techniques and further clarifies the relationship between contact manifolds and their Heegaard splittings.

A three-dimensional generalization of QRT maps

Abstract:We propose a geometric construction of three-dimensional birational maps that preserve two pencils of quadrics. The maps act as compositions of involutions, which, in turn, act along the straight line generators of the quadrics of the first pencil and are defined by the intersections with quadrics of the second pencil. On each quadric of the first pencil, the maps act as two-dimensional QRT maps. While these maps are of a pretty high degree in general, we find geometric conditions which guarantee that the degree is reduced to 3. The resulting degree 3 maps are illustrated by two known and two novel Kahan-type discretizations of three-dimensional Nambu systems, including the Euler top and the Zhukovski-Volterra gyrostat with two non-vanishing components of the gyrostatic momentum.

Abstract:We prove that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between smooth quartic surfaces with an outer Galois point and K3 surfaces with a certain automorphism of order 4. Furthermore, we characterize quartic surfaces with two or more outer Galois points as K3 surfaces.

The relationships will be revealed between singularities of the above three subjects and differential geometric invariants of null Cartan curves, these invariants are deeply related to the order of contact of null Cartan curves with null helices.

Abstract:In this paper, we study geometry of totally real minimal surfaces in the complex hyperquadric $Q_{N-2}$, and obtain some characterizations of the harmonic sequence generated by these minimal immersions. For totally real flat surfaces that are minimal in both $Q_{N-2}$ and $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$, we determine them for $N=4, 5, 6$, and give a classification theorem when they are Clifford solutions.

On the duals of smooth projective complex hypersurfaces

Abstract:We show first that a generic hypersurface $V$ of degree $d\geq 3$ in the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ has at least one hyperplane section $V \cap H$ containing exactly $n$ ordinary double points, alias $A_1$ singularities, in general position, and no other singularities. Equivalently, the dual hypersurface $V^{\vee}$ has at least one normal crossing singularity of multiplicity $n$. Using this result, we show that the dual of any smooth hypersurface with $n,d \geq 3$ has at least a very singular point $q$, in particular a point $q$ of multiplicity $\geq n$.

Abstract:Suppose that a Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface S of Picard rank one admits a rational Lagrangian fibration. We show that if the degree of the surface is sufficiently large compared to the number of points, then the Hilbert scheme is the unique hyperkähler manifold in its birational class. In particular, the Hilbert scheme is a Lagrangian fibration itself, which we realize as coming from a (twisted) Beauville–Mukai system on a Fourier–Mukai partner of S . We also show that when the degree of the surface is small our method can be used to find all birational models of the Hilbert scheme.

Abstract:In 1963, K.P.~Grotemeyer proved an interesting variant of the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem. Let $M$ be an oriented closed surface in theEuclidean space $\mathbb R^3$ with Euler characteristic $\chi(M)$, Gauss curvature $G$ and unit normal vector field $\vec n$. Grotemeyer'sidentity replaces the Gauss-Bonnet integrand $G$ by the normal moment $ ( \vec a \cdot \vec n )^2G$, where $a$ is a fixed unit vector: $\int_M(\vec a\cdot \vec n)^2 Gdv=\frac{2 \pi}{3}\chi(M) $. We generalize Grotemeyer's result to oriented closed even-dimensionalhypersurfaces of dimension $n$ in an $(n+1)$-dimensional space form $N^{n+1}(k)$.
Linear subspaces of the intersection of two quadrics via Kuznetsov component

Abstract:Let $Q_i(i=1,2)$ be $2g$ dimensional quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^{2g+1}$ and let $Y$ be the smooth intersection $Q_1\cap Q_2$. We associate the linear subspace in $Y$ with vector bundles on the hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus $g$ by the left adjoint functor of $\Phi:D^b(C)\rightarrow D^b(Y)$. As an application, we give a different proof of the classification of line bundles and stable bundles of rank $2$ on hyperelliptic curves given by Desale and Ramanan. When $g=3$, we show that the projection functor induces a closed embedding $\alpha:Y\rightarrow SU^s_C(4,h)$ into the moduli space of stable bundles on $C$ of rank $4$ of fixed determinant.

Abstract:Let $C\subset{\mathbb P}^{g-1}$ be a canonically embedded nonsingular nonhyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ and let $X\subset{\mathbb P}^{g-1}$ be a quadric containing $C$. Our main result states among other things that the Hilbert scheme of $X$ is at $[C\subset X]$ a local complete intersection of dimension $g^2-1$, and is smooth when $X$ is. It also includes the assertion that the minimal obstruction space for this deformation problem is in fact the full associated $\operatorname{Ext}^1$-group and that in particular the deformations of $C$ in $X$ are obstructed in case $C$ meets the singular locus of $X$. As we will show in a forthcoming paper, this has applications of a topological nature.

Abstract:We describe explicitly all quaternionic contact hypersurfaces (qc-hypersurfaces) in the flat quaternion space $\Hnn$ and the quaternion projective space. We show that up to a quaternionic affine transformation a qc-hypersurface in $\Hnn$ is contained in one of the three qc-hyperquadrics in $\Hnn$. Moreover, we show that an embedded qc-hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is qc-conformal to a qc-Einstein space and the Riemannian curvature tensor of the ambient hyper-Kähler metric is degenerate along the hypersurface.
