Abstract:It is known that non-hyperbolic limit cycles are structurally unstable in the set of planar smooth and analytical vector fields. In the polynomial case, it is known only that limit cycles of even degree are structurally unstable. In this paper, we prove that non-hyperbolic limit cycles of odd degree are also structurally unstable in the polynomial case, if we consider Whitney's topology.

On the cyclicity of hyperbolic polycycles

Abstract:Let $X$ be a planar smooth vector field with a polycycle $\Gamma^n$ with $n$ sides and all its corners, that are at most $n$ singularities, being hyperbolic saddles. In this paper we study the cyclicity of $\Gamma^n$ in terms of the hyperbolicity ratios of these saddles, giving explicit conditions that ensure that it is at least $k,$ for any $k\leqslant n.$ Our result extends old results and also provides a more accurate proof of the known ones because we rely on some recent powerful works that study in more detail the regularity with respect to initial conditions and parameters of the Dulac map of hyperbolic saddles for families of vector fields. We also prove that when $X$ is polynomial there is a polynomial perturbation (in general with degree much higher that the one of $X$) that attains each of the obtained lower bounds for the cyclicities. Finally, we also study some related inverse problems and provide concrete examples of applications in the polynomial world.

Persistence of Heterodimensional Cycles

Abstract:A heterodimensional cycle is an invariant set of a dynamical system consisting of two hyperbolic periodic orbits with different dimensions of their unstable manifolds and a pair of orbits that connect them. For systems which are at least $C^2$, we show that bifurcations of a coindex-1 heterodimensional cycle within a generic 2-parameter family create robust heterodimensional dynamics, i.e., a pair of non-trivial hyperbolic basic sets with different numbers of positive Lyapunov exponents, such that the unstable manifold of each of the sets intersects the stable manifold of the second set and these intersections persist for an open set of parameter values. We also give a solution to the so-called local stabilization problem of coindex-1 heterodimensional cycles in any regularity class $r=2,\ldots,\infty,\omega$. The results are based on the observation that arithmetic properties of moduli of topological conjugacy of systems with heterodimensional cycles determine the emergence of Bonatti-Díaz blenders.

Unveiling the Cyclicity of Monodromic Tangential Singularities: Insights Beyond the Pseudo-Hopf Bifurcation

Abstract:The cyclicity problem, crucial in analyzing planar vector fields, consists in estimating the number of limit cycles emanating from monodromic singularities. Traditionally, this estimation relies on Lyapunov coefficients. However, in nonsmooth systems, besides the limit cycles bifurcating by varying the Lyapunov coefficients, monodromic singularities on the switching curve can always be split apart yielding, under suitable conditions, a sliding region and an additional limit cycle surrounding it. This bifurcation phenomenon, known as pseudo-Hopf bifurcation, has enhanced lower-bound cyclicity estimations for monodromic singularities in Filippov systems. In this study, we push beyond the pseudo-Hopf bifurcation, demonstrating that the destruction of $(2k,2k)$-monodromic tangential singularities yields at least $k$ limit cycles surrounding sliding segments. This new bifurcation phenomenon expands our understanding of limit cycle bifurcations in nonsmooth systems and, in addition to the theoretical significance, has practical relevance in various applied models involving switches and abrupt processes.

Notions, Stability, Existence, and Robustness of Limit Cycles in Hybrid Dynamical Systems

Abstract:This paper deals with existence and robust stability of hybrid limit cycles for a class of hybrid systems given by the combination of continuous dynamics on a flow set and discrete dynamics on a jump set. For this purpose, the notion of Zhukovskii stability, typically stated for continuous-time systems, is extended to the hybrid systems. Necessary conditions, particularly, a condition using a forward invariance notion, for existence of hybrid limit cycles are first presented. In addition, a sufficient condition, related to Zhukovskii stability, for the existence of (or lack of) hybrid limit cycles is established. Furthermore, under mild assumptions, we show that asymptotic stability of such hybrid limit cycles is not only equivalent to asymptotic stability of a fixed point of the associated Poincaré map but also robust to perturbations. Specifically, robustness to generic perturbations, which capture state noise and unmodeled dynamics, and to inflations of the flow and jump sets are established in terms of $\mathcal{KL}$ bounds. Furthermore, results establishing relationships between the properties of a computed Poincaré map, which is necessarily affected by computational error, and the actual asymptotic stability properties of a hybrid limit cycle are proposed. In particular, it is shown that asymptotic stability of the exact Poincaré map is preserved when computed with enough precision. Several examples, including a congestion control system and spiking neurons, are presented to illustrate the notions and results throughout the paper.

Abstract:The stability of heteroclinic cycles may be obtained from the value of the local stability index along each connection of the cycle. We establish a way of calculating the local stability index for quasi-simple cycles: cycles whose connections are 1-dimensional and contained in flow-invariant spaces of equal dimension. These heteroclinic cycles exist both in symmetric and non-symmetric contexts. We make one assumption on the dynamics along the connections to ensure that the transition matrices have a convenient form. Our method applies to all simple heteroclinic cycles of type Z and to various heteroclinic cycles arising in population dynamics, namely non-simple heteroclinic cycles, as well as to cycles that are part of a heteroclinic network. We illustrate our results with a non-simple cycle present in a heteroclinic network of the Rock-Scissors-Paper game.

Stability is not open or generic in symplectic four-manifolds

Abstract:Given an embedded stable hypersurface in a four-dimensional symplectic manifold, we prove that it is stable isotopic to a $C^0$-close stable hypersurface with the following property: $C^\infty$-nearby hypersurfaces are generically unstable. This shows that the stability property is neither open nor generic, independently of the isotopy class of hypersurfaces and ambient symplectic manifold. The proof combines tools from stable Hamiltonian topology with techniques in three-dimensional dynamics such as partial sections, integrability and KAM theory. On our way, we establish non-density properties of Reeb-like flows and a generic non-integrability theorem for cohomologous Hamiltonian structures and volume-preserving fields in dimension three.

Abstract:"Tears of the heart" is a hyperbolic polycycle formed by three separatrix connections of two saddles. It is met in generic 3-parameter families of planar vector fields. In [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1506.06797" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1506.06797">arXiv:1506.06797</a>], it was discovered that generically, the bifurcation of a vector field with "tears of the heart" is structurally unstable. The authors proved that the classification of such bifurcations has a numerical invariant. In this article, we study the bifurcations of "tears of the heart" in more detail, and find out that the classification of such bifurcation may have arbitrarily many numerical invariants.

Abstract:This paper studies the number of centers and limit cycles of the family of planar quartic polynomial vector fields that has the invariant algebraic curve $(4x^2-1)(4y^2-1)=0.$ The main interest for this type of vector fields comes from their appearance in some mathematical models in Game Theory composed by two players. In particular, we find examples with five nested limit cycles surrounding the same singularity, as well as examples with four limit cycles formed by two disjoint nests, each one of them with two limit cycles. We also prove a Berlinski\u ı's type result for this family of vector fields.

Abstract:We consider a sufficiently smooth semi-stable holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold. Assuming the automorphism group of its graded object to be abelian, we provide a semialgebraic decomposition of a neighbourhood of the polarisation in the Kähler cone into chambers characterising (in)stability. For a path in a stable chamber converging to the initial polarisation, we show that the associated HYM connections converge to an HYM connection on the graded object.

Abstract:Stable and unstable manifolds, originating from hyperbolic cycles, fundamentally characterize the behaviour of dynamical systems in chaotic regions. This letter demonstrates that their shifts under perturbation, crucial for chaos control, are computable with minimal effort using functional derivatives by considering the entire system as an argument. The shifts of homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits, as the intersections of these manifolds, are readily calculated by analyzing the movements of the intersection points.

Abstract:We study global bifurcations in generic three-parameter families of vector fields on S2. In the recent article by Ilyashenko et al (2018 Invent. Math. 213 461--506), the authors show that three-parameter unfoldings of vector fields with the polycycle 'tears of the heart' are structurally unstable. We consider three-parameter unfoldings of vector fields with separatrix graphs 'ears' and 'glasses', and prove that these families are structurally unstable as well. We also study in more details the classical bifurcation of a saddle loop, and use it as a building block in our main example.

Abstract:We study the number of limit cycles that a planar polynomial vector field can have as a function of its number $m$ of monomials. We prove that the number of limit cycles increases at least quadratically with $m$ and we provide good lower bounds for $m\leqslant10$.

In this paper we prove that $\mathcal{H}(n)$ is realizable by structurally stable vector fields with only hyperbolic limit cycles and that it is a strictly increasing function whenever it is finite.

Abstract:This article discusses a combinatorial extension of tropical intersection theory to spaces given by glueing quotients of partially open convex polyhedral cones by finitely many automorphisms. This extension is done in terms of linear poic-complexes and poic-fibrations, mainly motivated by the case of the moduli spaces of tropical curves of arbitrary genus and marking. We define tropical cycles of a linear poic-complex and of a poic-fibration, and discuss the pushforward maps in these situations. In the context of moduli spaces of tropical curves, we also discuss "clutching morphisms" and "forgetting the marking" morphisms. In a subsequent article we apply this framework to moduli spaces of discrete admissible covers and study the loci of tropical curves that appear as the source of a degree-$d$ discrete admissible cover of a genus-$h$ $m$-marked tropical curve, for fixed $d$, $h$ and $m$.

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with determining lower bounds of the number of limit cycles for piecewise polynomial holomorphic systems with a straight line of discontinuity. We approach this problem with different points of view: study of the number of zeros of the first and second order averaging functions, or with the control of the limit cycles appearing from a monodromic equilibrium point via a degenerated Andronov-Hoph type bifurcation, adding at the very end the sliding effects. We also use the Poincaré-Miranda theorem for obtaining an explicit piecewise linear holomorphic systems with 3 limit cycles, result that improves the known examples in the literature that had a single limit cycle.
