Abstract:This paper aims to apply the tool of generalized existential completions of conjunctive doctrines, concerning a class $\Lambda$ of morphisms of their base category, to deepen the study of regular and exact completions of existential elementary Lawvere's doctrines. After providing a characterization of generalized existential completions, we observe that both the subobjects doctrine $\mathrm{Sub}_{C}$ and the weak subobjects doctrine $\Psi_{\mathcal{C}}$ of a category $\mathcal{C}$ with finite limits are generalized existential completions of the constant true doctrine, the first along the class of all the monomorphisms of $\mathcal{C}$ while the latter along all the morphisms of $\mathcal{C}$. We then name full existential completion a generalized completion of a conjunctive doctrine along the class of all the morphisms of its base. From this we immediately deduce that both the regular and the exact completion of a finite limit category are regular and exact completions of full existential doctrines since it is known that both the regular completion $(\mathcal{D})_{ reg / lex}$ and the exact completion $(\mathcal{D})_{ex / lex}$ of a finite limit category $\mathcal{D}$ are respectively the regular completion $\mathrm{Reg}(\Psi_{\mathcal{D}})$ and the exact completion $\mathcal{T}_{\Psi_{\mathcal{D}}}$ (as an instance of the tripos-to-topos construction) of the weak subobjects doctrine $\Psi_{\mathcal{D}}$ of $\mathcal{D}$. Here we prove that the condition of being a generic full existential completion is also sufficient to produce a regular/exact completion equivalent to a regular/exact completion of a finite limit category. Then, we show more specialized characterizations from which we derive known results as well as remarkable examples of exact completions of full existential completions, including all realizability toposes and supercoherent localic toposes.

Abstract:We show that completeness at higher levels of the theory of the reals is a robust notion (under changing the signature and bounding the domain of the quantifiers). This mends recognized gaps in the hierarchy, and leads to stronger completeness results for various computational problems. We exhibit several families of complete problems which can be used for future completeness results in the real hierarchy. As an application we sharpen some results by Bürgisser and Cucker on the complexity of properties of semialgebraic sets, including the Hausdorff distance problem also studied by Jungeblut, Kleist, and Miltzow.

Uniform existential definitions of valuations in function fields in one variable

Abstract:We study function fields of curves over a base field $K$ which is either a global field or a large field having a separable field extension of degree divisible by $4$. We show that, for any such function field, Hilbert's 10th Problem has a negative answer, the valuation rings containing $K$ are uniformly existentially definable, and finitely generated integrally closed $K$-subalgebras are definable by a universal-existential formula. In order to obtain these results, we develop further the usage of local-global principles for quadratic forms in function fields to definability of certain subrings. We include a first systematic presentation of this general method, without restriction on the characteristic.

Abstract:We provide a new description of Joyal's arithmetic universes through a characterization of the exact and regular completions of pure existential completions. We show that the regular and exact completions of the pure existential completion of an elementary doctrine $P$ are equivalent to the $\mathsf{reg}/\mathsf{lex}$ and $\mathsf{ex}/\mathsf{lex}$-completions, respectively, of the category of predicates of $P$. This result generalizes a previous one by the first author with F. Pasquali and G. Rosolini about doctrines equipped with Hilbert's $\epsilon$-operators. Thanks to this characterization, each arithmetic universe in the sense of Joyal can be seen as the exact completion of the pure existential completion of the doctrine of predicates of its Skolem theory. In particular, the initial arithmetic universe in the standard category of ZFC-sets turns out to be the completion with exact quotients of the doctrine of recursively enumerable predicates.

Abstract:We set up general machinery to study interpretations of fragments of theories. We then apply this to existential fragments of theories of fields, and especially of henselian valued fields. As an application we prove many-one reductions between various existential theories of fields. In particular we exhibit several theories of fields many-one equivalent to the existential theory of $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:The main goal of this project is to prove the equivalency of several characterizations of completeness of Archimedean ordered fields; some of which appear in most modern literature as theorems following from the Dedekind completeness of the real numbers, while a couple are not as well known and have to do with other areas of mathematics, such as nonstandard analysis. Continuing, we study the completeness of non-Archimedean fields, and provide several examples of such fields with varying degrees of properties, using nonstandard analysis to produce some relatively "nice" (in particular, they are Cantor complete) final examples. As a small detour, we present a short construction of the real numbers using methods from nonstandard analysis.

Abstract:It is well known that any power series over a finite field represents a rational function if and only if its sequence of coefficients is ultimately periodic. The famous Christol's Theorem states that a power series over a finite field is algebraic if and only if its sequence of coefficients is $p$-automatic. In this paper, we extend these two results to expansions of elements in the completion of a global function field under a nontrivial valuation. As application of our generalization of Christol's theorem, we answer some questions about $\beta$-expansions of formal Laurent series over finite fields.

Abstract:We survey the complexity class $\exists \mathbb{R}$, which captures the complexity of deciding the existential theory of the reals. The class $\exists \mathbb{R}$ has roots in two different traditions, one based on the Blum-Shub-Smale model of real computation, and the other following work by Mnëv and Shor on the universality of realization spaces of oriented matroids. Over the years the number of problems for which $\exists \mathbb{R}$ rather than NP has turned out to be the proper way of measuring their complexity has grown, particularly in the fields of computational geometry, graph drawing, game theory, and some areas in logic and algebra. $\exists \mathbb{R}$ has also started appearing in the context of machine learning, Markov decision processes, and probabilistic reasoning. We have aimed at collecting a comprehensive compendium of problems complete and hard for $\exists \mathbb{R}$, as well as a long list of open problems. The compendium is presented in the third part of our survey; a tour through the compendium and the areas it touches on makes up the second part. The first part introduces the reader to the existential theory of the reals as a complexity class, discussing its history, motivation and prospects as well as some technical aspects.

On the structure of $T$-$λ$-spherical completions of o-minimal fields

Abstract:Let $T$ be the theory of an o-minimal field and $T_0$ a common reduct of $T$ and $T_{an}$. I adapt Mourgues' and Ressayre's constructions to deduce structure results for $T_0$-reducts of $T$-$\lambda$-spherical completion of models of $T_{\mathrm{convex}}$. These in particular entail that whenever $\mathbb{R}_L$ is a reduct of $\mathbb{R}_{an,\exp}$ defining the exponential, every elementary extension of $\mathbb{R}_L$ has an elementary truncation-closed embedding in the class-sized field $\mathbf{No}$ of surreal numbers. This partially answers a question in [3](<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2002.07739" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.07739">arXiv:2002.07739</a>). The main technical result is that certain expansion of Hahn fields by generalized power series interpreted as functions defined on the positive infinitesimal elements, have the property that truncation closed subsets generate truncation closed substructures. This leaves room for possible generalizations to the case in which $T_0$ is power bounded but not necessarily a reduct of $T_{an}$.

Abstract:Descriptive complexity theory aims at inferring a problem's computational complexity from the syntactic complexity of its description. A cornerstone of this theory is Fagin's Theorem, by which a graph property is expressible in existential second-order logic (ESO logic) if, and only if, it is in NP. A natural question, from the theory's point of view, is which syntactic fragments of ESO logic also still characterize NP. Research on this question has culminated in a dichotomy result by Gottlob, Kolatis, and Schwentick: for each possible quantifier prefix of an ESO formula, the resulting prefix class either contains an NP-complete problem or is contained in P. However, the exact complexity of the prefix classes inside P remained elusive. In the present paper, we clear up the picture by showing that for each prefix class of ESO logic, its reduction closure under first-order reductions is either FO, L, NL, or NP. For undirected, self-loop-free graphs two containment results are especially challenging to prove: containment in L for the prefix $\exists R_1 \cdots \exists R_n \forall x \exists y$ and containment in FO for the prefix $\exists M \forall x \exists y$ for monadic $M$. The complex argument by Gottlob, Kolatis, and Schwentick concerning polynomial time needs to be carefully reexamined and either combined with the logspace version of Courcelle's Theorem or directly improved to first-order computations. A different challenge is posed by formulas with the prefix $\exists M \forall x\forall y$: We show that they express special constraint satisfaction problems that lie in L.
Existential closedness of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ as a globally valued field via Arakelov geometry

Abstract:We use the differentiability of the arithmetic volume function and an arithmetic Bertini type theorem to classify when one can find a closed point on the generic fiber of an arithmetic variety, whose heights with respect to some finite tuple of arithmetic $\mathbb{R}$-divisors approximate a given tuple of real numbers. We use this result to prove existential closedness of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ as a globally valued field (abbreviated GVF). We introduce GVF functionals on the space of arithmetic $\mathbb{R}$-divisors and interpret the essential infimum function as the infimum of values of normalised GVF functionals, at least when the generic part of the arithmetic $\mathbb{R}$-divisor is big. We also give a new criterion on equality in one of the Zhang's inequalities.

Abstract:Generalising the uniform companion for large fields with a single derivation, we construct a theory $\text{UC}_{\mathcal{D}}$ of fields of characteristic $0$ with free operators -- operators determined by a homomorphism from the field to its tensor product with $\mathcal{D}$, a finite-dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra -- which is the model companion of any theory of a field with free operators whose associated difference field is difference large and model complete. Under the assumption that $\mathcal{D}$ is a local ring, we show that simplicity is transferred from the theory of the underlying field to the theory of the field with operators, and we use this to study the model theory of bounded, PAC fields with free operators.

Abstract:We present a characterization of the completeness of the field of real numbers in the form of a \emph{collection of ten equivalent statements} borrowed from algebra, real analysis, general topology and non-standard analysis. We also discuss the completeness of non-Archimedean fields and present several examples of such fields. As an application we exploit one of our results to argue that the Leibniz infinitesimal calculus in the $18^\textrm{th}$ century was already a rigorous branch of mathematics -- at least much more rigorous than most contemporary mathematicians prefer to believe. By advocating our particular historical point of view, we hope to provoke a discussion on the importance of mathematical rigor in mathematics and science in general. We believe that our article will be of interest for those readers who teach courses on abstract algebra, real analysis, general topology, logic and the history of mathematics.

Abstract:We study the decidability and complexity of equational theories of the existential calculus of relations with transitive closure (ECoR*) and its fragments, where ECoR* is the positive calculus of relations with transitive closure extended with complements of term variables and constants. We give characterizations of these equational theories by using edge saturations and we show that the equational theory is 1) coNP-complete for ECoR* without transitive closure; 2) in coNEXP for ECoR* without intersection and PSPACE-complete for two smaller fragments; 3) $\Pi_{1}^{0}$-complete for ECoR*. The second result gives PSPACE-upper bounds for some extensions of Kleene algebra, including Kleene algebra with top w.r.t. binary relations.

Abstract:If $C$ is a curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with genus at least $2$ and $C(\mathbb{Q})$ is empty, then the class of fields $K$ of characteristic 0 such that $C(K) = \varnothing$ has a model companion, which we call $C\mathrm{XF}$. The theory $C\mathrm{XF}$ is not complete, but we characterize the completions. Using $C\mathrm{XF}$, we produce examples of fields with interesting combinations of properties. For example, we produce (1) a model-complete field with unbounded Galois group, (2) an infinite field with a decidable first-order theory that is not ``large'' in the sense of Pop, (3) a field that is algebraically bounded but not ``very slim'' in the sense of Junker and Koenigsmann, and (4) a pure field that is strictly NSOP$_4$, i.e., NSOP$_4$ but not NSOP$_3$. Lastly, we give a new construction of fields that are virtually large but not large.

Abstract:We capture in the context of lex colimits, introduced by Garner and Lack, the universal property of the free regular and Barr-exact completions of a weakly lex category. This is done by introducing a notion of flatness for functors $F\colon\mathcal C\to\mathcal E$ with lex codomain, and using this to describe the universal property of free $\Phi$-exact completions in the absence of finite limits, for any given class $\Phi$ of lex weights. In particular, we shall give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of free lextensive and free pretopos completions in the non-lex world, and prove that the ultraproducts, in the categories of models of such completions, satisfy an universal property.
