Abstract:We describe the local transition probability of a singular diagonal action on the standard non-uniform quotient of $PGL_3$ associated to the type 1 geodesic flow. As a consequence, we deduce the strongly positive recurrence property of the geodesic flow.

Abstract:Kerov [16,17] proved that Wigner’s semi-circular law in Gaussian unitary ensembles is the transition distribution of the omega curve discovered by Vershik and Kerov [34] for the limit shape of random partitions under the Plancherel measure. This establishes a close link between random Plancherel partitions and Gaussian unitary ensembles. In this paper we aim to consider a general problem, namely, to characterize the transition distribution of the limit shape of random Young diagrams under Poissonized Plancherel measures in a periodic potential, which naturally arises in Nekrasov’s partition functions and is further studied by Nekrasov and Okounkov [25] and Okounkov [28,29] . We also find an associated matrix model for this transition distribution. Our argument is based on a purely geometric analysis on the relation between matrix models and Seiberg-Witten differentials.
Randomized Geodesic Flow on Hyperbolic Groups

Abstract:Motivated by Gromov's geodesic flow problem on hyperbolic groups $G$, we develop in this paper an analog using random walks. This leads to a notion of a harmonic analog $\Theta$ of the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure on $\partial^2 G$. We provide three different but related constructions of $\Theta$: 1) by moving the base-point along a quasigeodesic ray 2) by moving the base-point along random walk trajectories 3) directly as a push-forward under the boundary map to $\partial^2 G$ of a measure inherited from studying all bi-infinite random walk trajectories (with no restriction on base-point) on $G^{\mathbb{Z}}$. Of these, the third construction is the most involved and needs new techniques. It relies on developing a framework where we can treat bi-infinite random walk trajectories as analogs of bi-infinite geodesics on complete simply connected negatively curved manifolds. Geodesic flow on a hyperbolic group is typically not well-defined due to non-uniqueness of geodesics. We circumvent this problem in the random walk setup by considering \emph{all} trajectories. We thus get a well-defined \emph{discrete flow} given by the $\mathbb{Z}-$shift on bi-infinite random walk trajectories. The $\mathbb{Z}-$shift is the random analog of the time one map of the geodesic flow. As an analog of ergodicity of the geodesic flow on a closed negatively curved manifold, we establish ergodicity of the $G$-action on $(\partial^2G, \Theta)$.

Abstract:We prove that constant scalar curvature K\"ahler metric "adjacent" to a fixed K\"ahler class is unique up to isomorphism. This extends the uniqueness theorem of Donaldson and Chen-Tian, and formally fits into the infinite dimensional G.I.T picture described by Donaldson. We prove that the Calabi flow near a cscK metric exists globally and converges uniformly to a cscK metric in a polynomial rate. Viewed in a K\"ahler class, the Calabi flow is also shown to be asymptotic to a smooth geodesic ray at infinity. This latter fact is also interesting in the finite dimensional analogue, where we show that the downward gradient flow of the Kempf-Ness function in a semi-stable orbit is asymptotic to the direction of optimal degeneration.

Abstract:In this paper we show that a geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one is time-preserving semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application we show that the geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one has a unique measure of maximal entropy. This gives an alternative proof of Climenhaga–Knieper–War Theorem.

Abstract:In this article, we establish the Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan dichotomy for geodesic flows on certain manifolds with no conjugate points: either the geodesic flow is conservative and ergodic, or it is completely dissipative and non-ergodic. We also show several equivalent conditions to the conservativity, such the Poincaré series diverges at the critical exponent, the conical limit set has full Patterson-Sullivan measure, etc.

On ergodic properties of geodesic flows on uniform visibility manifolds without conjugate points

Abstract:In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive study on ergodic properties of the geodesic flow on a $C^\infty$ uniform visibility manifold $M$ without conjugate points. If $M$ is a closed surface of genus at least two without conjugate points, and with continuous Green bundles and bounded asymptote, we study the geometric properties of singular geodesics and show that if all singular geodesics are closed, then there are at most finitely many isolated singular closed geodesics and finitely many generalized strips. In particular, the geodesic flow is ergodic with respect to Liouville measure under the above assumption. Let $(M,g)$ be a closed uniform visibility manifold without conjugate points and $X$ its universal cover. Under the entropy gap assumption, the geodesic flow has a unique measure of maximal entropy (MME for short) by \cite[Theorem 1.2]{MR}. We develop a Patterson-Sullivan construction of this unique MME and show that it has local product structure, is fully supported, and has the Bernoulli property. If we assume further that $M$ has continuous Green bundles and the geodesic flow has a hyperbolic periodic point, using the nonuniform hyperbolic structure on an open dense subset and the symbolic approach developed in \cite{LP}, we show that for any Hölder continuous function, the equilibrium state is unique under the pressure gap condition. Under the same conditions above, we apply the mixing properties of the MME to count the number of free-homotopy classes containing a closed geodesic, as well as the volume asymptotics of Riemannian balls in the universal cover. We then obtain some rigidity results involving the Margulis function. Finally, for a uniform visibility manifold $M=X/\Gamma$ (not necessarily compact) without conjugate points, we show that if $\Gamma$ is non-elementary and contains an expansive isometry, then the Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan dichotomy holds.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a compact manifold without conjugate points and with visibility universal covering. We show that its geodesic flow has a time-preserving expansive factor which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application, assuming further the so-called entropy-gap we prove the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow. For the other results we restrict our setting assuming furthermore the continuity of Green bundles and the existence of a hyperbolic closed geodesic. In this new context, we deduce that Green bundles are uniquely integrable and are tangent to the smooth leaves of the horospherical foliations. Moreover, we prove the above expansive factor acts on a compact topological manifold and its geodesic flow has a unique measure of maximal entropy which has full support.

Abstract:Motivated by an extension to Gallavotti–Cohen Chaotic Hypothesis, we study local and global existence of a gradient flow of the Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen entropy functional in the space of transitive Anosov maps. For the space of expanding maps on the unit circle, we equip it with a Hilbert manifold structure using a Sobolev norm in the tangent space of the manifold. Under the additional measure-preserving assumption and a slightly modified metric, we show that the gradient flow exists globally and every trajectory of the flow converges to a unique limiting map where the SRB entropy attains the maximal value. In a simple case, we obtain an explicit formula for the flow's ordinary differential equation representation. This gradient flow has close connection to a nonlinear partial differential equation, a gradient-dependent diffusion equation.

Abstract:Inspired by work of Besson-Courtois-Gallot, we construct a flow called the natural flow on a nonpositively curved Riemannian manifold $M$. As with the natural map, the $k$-Jacobian of the natural flow is directly related to the critical exponent $\delta$ of the fundamental group. There are several applications of the natural flow that connect dynamical, geometrical, and topological invariants of the manifold. First, we give $k$-dimensional linear isoperimetric inequalities when $k > \delta$. This, in turn, produces lower bounds on the Cheeger constant. We resolve a recent conjecture of Dey-Kapovich on the non-existence of $k$-dimensional compact, complex subvarieties of complex hyperbolic manifolds with $2k > \delta$. We also provide upper bounds on the homological dimension, generalizing work of Kapovich and work of Farb with the first two authors. Using different methods, we also give upper bounds on the cohomological dimension which partially resolves a conjecture of Kapovich. We also specialize to the setting of locally symmetric manifolds where we further refine our work. Finally, we introduce a new growth condition on the Bowen-Margulis measure that we call uniformly exponentially bounded that we connect to the cohomological dimension and which could be of independent interest.

Abstract:Given a $C^{1+\beta}$ flow $\varphi$ with positive speed on a closed smooth Riemannian manifold, we code two homoclinically related $\varphi$-invariant probabilities by an irreducible countable topological Markov flow. As an application, we give proofs using symbolic dynamics of the theorem of Knieper on the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy and theorems of Burns et al on the uniqueness of equilibrium states.

Abstract:In Streets and Tian (2010) [1] the authors introduced a parabolic flow for pluriclosed metrics, referred to as pluriclosed flow. We also demonstrated in Streets and Tian (2010) (preprint) [2] that this flow, after certain gauge transformations, gives a class of solutions to the renormalization group flow of the nonlinear sigma model with B-field. Using these transformations, we show that our pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kähler structures in a natural way. Equivalently, when coupled with a nontrivial evolution equation for the two complex structures, the B-field renormalization group flow also preserves generalized Kähler structure. We emphasize that it is crucial to evolve the complex structures in the right way to establish this fact.

Abstract:We study an extreme value distribution for the unipotent flow on the modular surface $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})/\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Using tools from homogenous dynamics and geometry of numbers we prove the existence of a continuous distribution function $F(r)$ for the normalized deepest cusp excursions of the unipotent flow. We find closed analytic formulas for $F(r)$ for $r \in [-\frac{1}{2} \log 2, \infty)$, and establish asymptotic behavior of $F(r)$ as $r \to -\infty$.

Abstract:We study {\sf traversing} vector flows $v$ on smooth compact manifolds $X$ with boundary. For a given compact manifold $\hat X$, equipped with a traversing vector field $\hat v$ which is {\sf convex} with respect to $\partial\hat X$, we consider submersions/embeddings $\alpha: X \to \hat X$ such that $\dim X = \dim \hat X$ and $\alpha(\partial X)$ avoids a priory chosen tangency patterns $\Theta$ to the $\hat v$-trajectories. In particular, for each $\hat v$-trajectory $\hat\gamma$, we restrict the cardinality of $\hat\gamma \cap \alpha(\partial X)$ by an even number $d$. We call $(\hat X, \hat v)$ a {\sf convex pseudo-envelop/envelop} of the pair $(X, v)$. Here the vector field $v = \alpha^\dagger(\hat v)$ is the $\alpha$-transfer of $\hat v$ to $X$. For a fixed $(\hat X, \hat v)$, we introduce an equivalence relation among convex pseudo-envelops/ envelops $\alpha: (X, v) \to (\hat X, \hat v)$, which we call a {\sf quasitopy}. The notion of quasitopy is a crossover between bordisms of pseudo-envelops and their pseudo-isotopies. In the study of quasitopies $\mathcal{QT}_d(Y, \mathbf c\Theta)$, the spaces $\mathcal P_d^{\mathbf c\Theta}$ of real univariate polynomials of degree $d$ with real divisors whose combinatorial types avoid the closed poset $\Theta$ play the classical role of Grassmanians. We compute, in the homotopy-theoretical terms that involve $(\hat X, \hat v)$ and $\mathcal P_d^{\mathbf c\Theta}$, the quasitopies of convex envelops which avoid the $\Theta$-tangency patterns. We introduce characteristic classes of pseudo-envelops and show that they are invariants of their quasitopy classes. Then we prove that the quasitopies $\mathcal{QT}_d(Y, \mathbf c\Theta)$ often stabilize, as $d \to \infty$.

Transition Amplitudes in 3D Quantum Gravity: Boundaries and Holography in the Coloured Boulatov Model

Abstract:We consider transition amplitudes in the coloured simplicial Boulatov model for three-dimensional Riemannian quantum gravity. First, we discuss aspects of the topology of coloured graphs with non-empty boundaries. Using a modification of the standard rooting procedure of coloured tensor models, we then write transition amplitudes systematically as topological expansions. We analyse the transition amplitudes for the simplest boundary topology, the 2-sphere, and prove that they factorize into a sum entirely given by the combinatorics of the boundary spin network state and that the leading order is given by graphs representing the closed 3-ball in the large N limit. This is the first step towards a more detailed study of the holographic nature of coloured Boulatov-type GFT models for topological field theories and quantum gravity.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a countable partition $${\cal A}$$ for flows with hyperbolic singularities by introducing a new cross section at each singularity. Such partition forms a Kakutani tower in a neighborhood of the singularity, and turns out to have finite metric entropy for every invariant probability measure. Moreover, each element of $${{\cal A}^\infty}$$ will stay in a scaled tubular neighborhood for arbitrarily long time. This new construction enables us to study entropy theory for singular flows away from homoclinic tangencies, and show that the entropy function is upper semi-continuous with respect to both invariant measures and the flows, provided that the limiting measure satisfies μ(Sing(X)) = 0.

Abstract:We apply conformal flows of metrics restricted to the orthogonal distribution $D$ of a foliation to study the question: Which foliations admit a metric such that the leaves are totally geodesic and the mixed scalar curvature is positive? Our evolution operator includes the integrability tensor of $D$, and for the case of integrable orthogonal distribution the flow velocity is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature. We observe that the mean curvature vector $H$ of $D$ satisfies along the leaves the forced Burgers equation, this reduces to the linear Schrödinger equation, whose potential function is a certain "non-umbilicity" measure of $D$. On order to show convergence of the solution metrics $g_t$ as $t\to\infty$, we normalize the flow, and instead of a foliation consider a fiber bundle $\pi: M\to B$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g_0)$. In this case, if the "non-umbilicity" of $D$ is smaller in a sense then the "non-integrability", then the limit mixed scalar curvature function is positive. For integrable $D$, we give examples with foliated surfaces and twisted products.

Abstract:In prior work the authors introduced a parabolic flow of pluriclosed metrics. Here we give improved regularity results for solutions to this equation. Furthermore, we exhibit this equation as the gradient flow of the lowest eigenvalue of a certain Schr\"odinger operator, and show the existence of an expanding entropy functional for this flow. Finally, we motivate a conjectural picture of the optimal regularity results for this flow, and discuss some of the consequences.
