Abstract:We show that if one drives the KPZ equation by the derivative of a space-time white noise smoothened out at scale $\varepsilon \ll 1$ and multiplied by $\varepsilon^{3/4}$ then, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, solutions converge to the Cole-Hopf solutions to the KPZ equation driven by space-time white noise.

Abstract:We consider the KPZ equation in $1$ spatial dimension with noise that is rougher than white by an exponent $\gamma>1/4$. Under a weak coupling limit, formally removing the nonlinearity from the equation, we show using regularity structures that the renormalised solutions converge to a Gaussian limit that is different from the solution of the linear part of the equation. The regime of this effect has a nontrivial overlap with the subcritical regime $\gamma<1/2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the KPZ equation driven by space-time white noise replaced with its fractional derivatives of order $\gamma>0$ in spatial variable. A well-posedness theory for the KPZ equation is established by Hairer [3] as an application of the theory of regularity structures. Our aim is to see to what extent his theory works if noises become rougher. We can expect that his theory works if and only if $\gamma<1/2$. However, we show that the renormalization like "$(\partial_x h)^2-\infty$" is well-posed only if $\gamma<1/4$.

Abstract:We derive the renormalised equation for the quasi-generalised KPZ equation with space-time white noise. We complement the program initiated by Gerencsér and Hairer for solving quasi-linear equations using regularity structures by an algebraic machinery that gives a systematic tool to remove non-local counterterms and provide a precise expression of the renormalised equation that is consistent with the semilinear case. The solution theory satisfies the chain rule and a natural notion of Itô isometry, which can be combined to obtain global in time solution.

An invariance principle for the 1D KPZ equation

Abstract:Consider a discrete one-dimensional random surface whose height at a point grows as a function of the heights at neighboring points plus an independent random noise. Assuming that this function is equivariant under constant shifts, symmetric in its arguments, and at least six times continuously differentiable in a neighborhood of the origin, we show that as the variance of the noise goes to zero, any such process converges to the Cole-Hopf solution of the 1D KPZ equation under a suitable scaling of space and time. This proves an invariance principle for the 1D KPZ equation, in the spirit of Donsker's invariance principle for Brownian motion.

Hairer-Quastel universality for KPZ -- polynomial smoothing mechanisms, general nonlinearities and Poisson noise

Abstract:We consider a class of weakly asymmetric continuous microscopic growth models with polynomial smoothing mechanisms, general nonlinearities and a Poisson type noise. We show that they converge to the KPZ equation after proper rescaling and re-centering, where the coupling constant depends nontrivially on all details of the smoothing and growth mechanisms in the microscopic model. This confirms some of the predictions in [HQ18], and provides a first example of Hairer-Quastel type with both a generic nonlinearity (non-polynomial) and a non-Gaussian noise. The proof builds on the general discretisation framework of regularity structures ([EH19]), and employs the idea of using the spectral gap inequality to control stochastic objects as developed and systematised in [LOTT21,HS24], together with a new observation on the specific structure of the (discrete) Malliavin derivatives in our situation. This structure enables us to reduce the control of mixed $L^p$ spacetime norms (of arbitrarily large $p$) by certain $L^2$-norms in spacetime.

Scaling limit of the KPZ equation with non-integrable spatial correlations

Abstract:We study the large scale fluctuations of the KPZ equation in dimensions $d \geq 3$ driven by Gaussian noise that is white in time Gaussian but features non-integrable spatial correlation with decay rate $\kappa \in (2, d)$ and a suitable limiting profile. We show that its scaling limit is described by the corresponding additive stochastic heat equation. In contrast to the case of compactly supported covariance, the noise in the stochastic heat equation retains spatial correlation with covariance $|x|^{-\kappa}$. Surprisingly, the noise driving the limiting equation turns out to be the scaling limit of the noise driving the KPZ equation so that, under a suitable coupling, one has convergence in probability, unlike in the case of integrable correlations where fluctuations are enhanced in the limit and convergence is necessarily weak.

Moment-based approach for two erratic KPZ scaling limits

Abstract:A recent paper of Tsai shows that the first few moments of a stochastic flow in the space of measures completely determine its law. Here we give another proof of this result for the particular case of the one-dimensional multiplicative stochastic heat equation (mSHE), and then we investigate two corollaries. The first one recovers a recent result of Hairer on a ``variance blowup" problem related to the KPZ equation , albeit in a much weaker topology. The second one recovers a KPZ scaling limit result related to random walks in random environments, but in a weaker topology. In these two problems, we furthermore explain why it is hard to directly use the martingale characterization of the mSHE, the chaos expansion, or other known methods. Using the moment-based approach avoids technicalities, leading to a short proof.

Abstract:The one-dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation is the one-dimensional Fourier-space analogue of the famous Navier-Stokes equations. In their work Li and Sinai have proposed a renormalization approach to the problem of existence of finite-time blow up solutions of this equation. In this setting, existence of finite time blow ups is a consequence of existence of a fixed point for a certain renormalization operator on an appropriate functional space. They have provided a proof of existence of complex-valued finite time blow up solutions of the quasi-geostrophic equation. In this paper we revisit the renormalization problem for the quasi-geostrophic blow ups, prove existence of a family of renormalization fixed points, and deduce existence of real $C^\infty([0,T),C^\infty(\mathbb{R}) \cap L^2(\mathbb{R}))$ solutions to the quasi-geostrophic equation whose energy and enstrophy become unbounded in finite time, different from those found in the previous work of Li and Sinai.
BPHZ renormalisation and vanishing subcriticality asymptotics of the fractional $Φ^3_d$ model

Abstract:We consider stochastic PDEs on the $d$-dimensional torus with fractional Laplacian of parameter $\rho\in(0,2]$, quadratic nonlinearity and driven by space-time white noise. These equations are known to be locally subcritical, and thus amenable to the theory of regularity structures, if and only if $\rho > d/3$. Using a series of recent results by the second named author, A. Chandra, I. Chevyrev, M. Hairer and L. Zambotti, we obtain precise asymptotics on the renormalisation counterterms as the mollification parameter $\varepsilon$ becomes small and $\rho$ approaches its critical value. In particular, we show that the counterterms behave like a negative power of $\varepsilon$ if $\varepsilon$ is superexponentially small in $(\rho-d/3)$, and are otherwise of order $\log(\varepsilon^{-1})$. This work also serves as an illustration of the general theory of BPHZ renormalisation in a relatively simple situation.

Abstract:We give a proof of the convergence of the BHZ renormalized model associated with the generalized (KPZ) equation that does not require the full strength of the BPHZ renormalisation. Our approach is based on a convenient form of chaos decomposition. The other key ingredient is a generalisation of the Hairer-Quastel convergence theorem for Feynman diagrams with certain decorations encoding Taylor remainders. With these ideas we are able to construct the model for the generalised KPZ equation.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic behavior of the KPZ fixed point $\{\mathsf H(x,t)\}_{x\in\mathbb R, t>0}$ conditioned on $\mathsf H(0,T)=L$ as $L$ goes to infinity. The main result is a conditional limit theorem for the fluctuations of $\mathsf H$ in the region near the line segment connecting the origin $(0,0)$ and $(0,T)$ for both step and flat initial conditions. The limit random field can be represented as a functional of two independent Brownian bridges, and in addition the limit random field depends also on the initial law of the KPZ fixed point. In particular for temporal fluctuations, the limit process indexed by line segment between $(0,0)$ and $(0,T)$, when the KPZ is with step initial condition, has the law of the minimum of two independent Brownian bridges; and when the KPZ is with flat initial condition the limit process has the law of the minimum of two independent Brownian bridges, each in addition perturbed by a common Gaussian random variable. For spatial-temporal fluctuations, the conditional limit theorem sheds light on the asymptotic behaviors of the point-to-point geodesic of the directed landscape conditioned on its length and as the length tends to infinity.

Abstract:We use a version of the Skorokhod integral to give a simple and rigorous formulation of the Wick-ordered (stochastic) heat equation with planar white noise, representing the free energy of an undirected random polymer. The solution for all times is expressed as the L1 limit of a martingale given by the Feyman-Kac formula and defines a randomized shift, or Gaussian multiplicative chaos. The fluctuations far from the centre are shown to be given by the one-dimensional KPZ equation.

Abstract:We show that under a certain moderate deviation scaling, the multiplicative-noise stochastic heat equation (SHE) arises as the fluctuations of the quenched density of a 1D random walk whose transition probabilities are iid [0,1]-valued random variables. In contrast to the case of directed polymers in the intermediate disorder regime, the variance of our weights is fixed rather than vanishing under the diffusive rescaling of space-time. Consequently, taking a naive limit of the chaos expansion fails for this model, and a nontrivial noise coefficient is observed in the limit. Rather than using chaos techniques, our proof instead uses the fact that in this regime the quenched density solves a discrete SPDE which resembles the SHE. As a byproduct of our techniques, it is shown that independent noise is generated in the limit.

Hierarchy of KPZ limits arising from directed random walk models in random media

Abstract:We consider a generalized model of random walk in dynamical random environment, and we show that the multiplicative-noise stochastic heat equation (SHE) describes the fluctuations of the quenched density at a certain precise location in the tail. The distribution of transition kernels is fixed rather than changing under the diffusive rescaling of space-time, i.e., there is no critical tuning of the model parameters when scaling to the stochastic PDE limit. The proof is done by pushing the methods developed in [arxiv <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2304.14279" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.14279">2304.14279</a>, arXiv <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2311.09151" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09151">2311.09151</a>] to their maximum, substantially weakening the assumptions and obtaining fairly sharp conditions under which one expects to see the SHE arise in a wide variety of random walk models in random media. In particular we are able to get rid of conditions such as nearest-neighbor interaction as well as spatial independence of quenched transition kernels. Moreover, we observe an entire hierarchy of moderate deviation exponents at which the SHE can be found, confirming a physics prediction of J. Hass.

Abstract:We prove the well-posed character of a regularity structure formulation of the quasilinear generalized (KPZ) equation and give an explicit form for a renormalized equation in the full subcritical regime. Under the assumption that the BPHZ models associated with a non-translation invariant operator converge, we obtain a convergence result for the solutions of the regularized renormalized equations. This conditional result covers the spacetime white noise case.

Abstract:Recently, a superdiffusion exhibiting the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling in late-time correlators and autocorrelators of certain interacting many-body systems has been reported. Inspired by these results, we explore the KPZ scaling in correlation functions using their realization in the Krylov operator basis. We focus on the Heisenberg time scale, which approximately corresponds to the ramp--plateau transition for the Krylov complexity in systems with a large but finite number degrees of freedom. Two frameworks are under consideration: i) the system with growing Lanczos coefficients and an artificial cut-off, and ii) the system with the finite Hilbert space. In both cases via numerical analysis, we observe the transition from Gaussian to KPZ-like scaling at the critical Euclidean time $t_{E}^*=c_{cr}K$, for the Krylov chain of finite length $K$, and $c_{cr}=O(1)$. In particular, we find a scaling $\sim K^{1/3}$ for fluctuations in the one-point correlation function and a dynamical scaling $\sim K^{-2/3}$ associated with the return probability (Loschmidt echo) corresponding to autocorrelators in physical space. In the first case, the transition is of the 3rd order and can be considered as an example of dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT), while in the second, it is a crossover. For case ii), utilizing the relationship between the spectrum of tridiagonal matrices at the spectral edge and the spectrum of the stochastic Airy operator, we demonstrate analytically the origin of the KPZ scaling for the particular Krylov chain using the results of the probability theory. We argue that there is some outcome of our study for the double scaling limit of matrix models. For the case of topological gravity, the white noise $O(\frac{1}{N})$ term is identified, which should be taken into account in the controversial issue of ensemble averaging in 2D/1D holography.

Abstract:We analyze the blowup behaviour of solutions to the focusing nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation in spatial dimensions $d\geq 2$. We obtain upper bounds on the blowup rate, both globally in space and in light cones. The results are sharp in the conformal and sub-conformal cases. The argument relies on Lyapunov functionals derived from the dilation identity. We also prove that the critical Sobolev norm diverges near the blowup time.

Abstract:For each $t\geq 1$ we construct an $\mathbf{N}$-indexed ensemble of random continuous curves with three properties: 1. The lowest indexed curve is distributed as the time $t$ Hopf-Cole solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) stochastic PDE with narrow wedge initial data; 2. The entire ensemble satisfies a resampling invariance which we call the $\mathbf{H}$-Brownian Gibbs property (with $\mathbf{H}(x)=e^{x}$); 3. Increments of the lowest indexed curve, when centered by $-t/24$ and scaled down vertically by $t^{1/3}$ and horizontally by $t^{2/3}$, remain uniformly absolutely continuous (i.e. have tight Radon-Nikodym derivatives) with respect to Brownian bridges as time $t$ goes to infinity. This construction uses as inputs the diffusion that O'Connell discovered in relation to the O'Connell-Yor semi-discrete Brownian polymer, the convergence result of Nica of the lowest indexed curve of that diffusion to the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data, and the one-point distribution formula proved by Amir-Corwin-Quastel for the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. We provide four main applications of this construction: 1. Uniform (as $t$ goes to infinity) Brownian absolute continuity of the time $t$ solution to the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data, even when scaled vertically by $t^{1/3}$ and horizontally by $t^{2/3}$; 2. Universality of the $t^{1/3}$ one-point (vertical) fluctuation scale for the solution of the KPZ equation with general initial data; 3. Concentration in the $t^{2/3}$ scale for the endpoint of the continuum directed random polymer; <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://4.Exponential" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> upper and lower tail bounds for the solution at fixed time of the KPZ equation with general initial data.

Convergence of exclusion processes and KPZ equation to the KPZ fixed point

Abstract:We show that under the 1:2:3 scaling, critically probing large space and time, the height function of finite range asymmetric exclusion processes and the KPZ equation converge to the KPZ fixed point, constructed earlier as a limit of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process through exact formulas. Consequently, based on recent results of \cite{wu},\cite{DM20}, the KPZ line ensemble converges to the Airy line ensemble. For the KPZ equation we are able to start from a continuous function plus a finite collection of narrow wedges. For nearest neighbour exclusions, we can take (discretizations) of height functions with $h(x)\le C(1+|x|)$. For non-nearest neighbour exclusions, we are restricted at the present time to a class of (random) initial data, dense in continuous functions in the topology of uniform convergence on compacts. The method is by comparison of the transition probabilities of finite range exclusion processes and the totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes using energy estimates.

The three dimensional stochastic Zakharov system

Abstract:We study the three dimensional stochastic Zakharov system in the energy space, where the Schrödinger equation is driven by linear multiplicative noise and the wave equation is driven by additive noise. We prove the well-posedness of the system up to the maximal existence time and provide a blow-up alternative. We further show that the solution exists at least as long as it remains below the ground state. Two main ingredients of our proof are refined rescaling transformations and the normal form method. Moreover, in contrast to the deterministic setting, our functional framework also incorporates the local smoothing estimate for the Schrödinger equation in order to control lower order perturbations arising from the noise. Finally, we prove a regularization by noise result which states that finite time blowup before any given time can be prevented with high probability by adding sufficiently large non-conservative noise. The key point of its proof is an estimate in Strichartz spaces for solutions of a Schrödinger type equation with a nonlocal potential involving the free wave.
