Abstract:It is found that subtle changes in the external magnetic field and temperature result in dramatic changes in the ultrafast response of spins to a femtosecond laser excitation in a ferrimagnetic Gd/FeCo multilayer. A total of six distinct types of spin dynamics were observed and explained by considering the spin-flop transition to the noncollinear phase and the concept of a tricritical point in the $H$-$T$ phase diagram. A particularly interesting type of dynamics is the exchange-driven reversal. These exchange-driven dynamics provide new insights into the tricritical point, which is shown to separate two thermodynamically distinct noncollinear phases with the transition-metal magnetization pointing on adjacent sides of the anisotropy plane.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the diversity and regulation mechanism of ultrafast spin dynamics near the tricritical point in ferromagnetic Gd/FeCo multilayer materials. Specifically, by changing the external magnetic field and temperature, the researchers observed six different types of spin dynamics and explored the relationship between these phenomena and non - collinear phase transitions and the tricritical point. The solution of these problems is helpful for in - depth understanding of the basic principles of ultrafast magnetism in ferromagnetic materials and how to use these properties to realize fast magnetic recording technology in practical applications. ### Research Background Ultrafast magnetism is a rapidly developing field of physics, mainly studying spin dynamics excited by ultrashort pulses (with a duration of only a few picoseconds or less) in magnetically ordered materials. These ultrashort pulses drive the magnetic medium into a strong non - equilibrium state, causing the failure of the conventional thermodynamic description and thus producing counter - intuitive spin - dynamics phenomena. A better understanding of these phenomena and the limits of their time - scale control is of great significance for the development of magnetic information processing and data - storage technologies. ### Research Object Ferromagnetic materials, due to their unique exchange interactions, have spins arranged antiparallel between different sub - lattices, but the net magnetization is not zero. Therefore, they show great potential in the study of ultrafast magnetism. Especially when approaching the compensation temperature, ferromagnetic materials combine the characteristics of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism and become an ideal platform for studying ultrafast magnetism. ### Main Findings 1. **Six different types of spin dynamics**: - **Types 1a and 1b**: Sub - picosecond laser - induced partial loss of magnetic order (ultrafast demagnetization), followed by the recovery of the FeCo sub - lattice. - **Type 2**: Ultrafast demagnetization of FeCo, followed by a slow (sub - nanosecond) magnetization reversal. - **Type 3 and 5**: Reduced demagnetization, followed by ultrafast spin reorientation accompanied by spin oscillations. - **Type 4**: Demagnetization is almost invisible or completely disappears, indicating that the magnetic moment of FeCo in the initial state points in - plane. 2. **The role of the tricritical point**: - The tricritical point distinguishes two thermodynamically different non - collinear phases, in one of which the transition - metal magnetic moment points to one side of the plane, and in the other it points to the other side. - The spin dynamics at the tricritical point are particularly interesting because ultrafast exchange - driven reversal can be observed here. ### Experimental Methods The researchers used the optical pump - probe technique. They excited the samples with femtosecond laser pulses and measured the change in Faraday rotation to study spin dynamics. In the experiment, SQUID - VSM (superconducting quantum interference device - vibrating sample magnetometer) was also used for static magnetic characterization. ### Conclusion This study reveals the rich ultrafast spin - dynamics behaviors in ferromagnetic Gd/FeCo multilayer materials, especially the dynamic diversity near the tricritical point. These findings not only enhance the understanding of the basic principles of ultrafast magnetism but also provide new ideas for the development of high - speed magnetic recording technology.
