Truth, beauty, and goodness in grand unification: a machine learning approach

Abstract:We investigate the flavour sector of the supersymmetric $SU(5)$ Grand Unified Theory (GUT) model using machine learning techniques. The minimal $SU(5)$ model is known to predict fermion masses that disagree with observed values in nature. There are two well-known approaches to address this issue: one involves introducing a 45-representation Higgs field, while the other employs a higher-dimensional operator involving the 24-representation GUT Higgs field. We compare these two approaches by numerically optimising a loss function, defined as the ratio of determinants of mass matrices. Our findings indicate that the 24-Higgs approach achieves the observed fermion masses with smaller modifications to the original minimal $SU(5)$ model.

Abstract:Gauge symmetries and Higgs mechanisms are key features of theories describing high-energy particle physics and collective phenomena in statistical and condensed-matter physics. In this review we address the collective behavior of systems of multicomponent scalar fields interacting with gauge fields, which can be already present in the underlying microscopic system or emerge only at criticality. The interplay between local gauge and global symmetries determines the phase diagram, the nature of the Higgs phases, and the nature of phase transitions between the high-temperature disordered and the low-temperature Higgs phases. However, additional crucial features determine the universal properties of the critical behavior at continuous transitions. Specifically, their nature also depends on the role played by the gauge modes at criticality. Effective (Abelian or non-Abelian) gauge Higgs field theories emerge when gauge modes develop critical correlations. On the other hand, a more standard critical behavior, which admits an effective description in terms of Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson $\Phi^4$ theories, occurs when gauge-field modes are short ranged at the transition. In the latter case, gauge fields only prevent non-gauge invariant correlation functions from becoming critical. This review covers the recent progress made in the study of Higgs systems with Abelian and non-Abelian gauge fields. We discuss the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of systems with a classical partition function, focusing mainly on three-dimensional systems, and only briefly discussing two-dimensional models. However, by using the quantum-to-classical mapping, the results on the critical behavior for classical systems in $D=d+1$ dimensions can be extended to quantum transitions in $d$ dimensions.

Analytic framework for self-dual criticality in $\mathbb{Z}_k$ gauge theory with matter

Abstract:We study the putative multicritical point in 2+1D $\mathbb{Z}_k$ gauge theory where the Higgs and confinement transitions meet. The presence of an $e$-$m$ duality symmetry at this critical point forces anyons with nontrivial braiding to close their gaps simultaneously, giving rise to a critical theory that mixes strong interactions with mutual statistics. An effective U(1) $\times$ U(1) gauge theory with a mutual Chern-Simons term at level $k$ is proposed to describe the vicinity of the multicritical point for $k \geq 4$. We argue analytically that monopoles are irrelevant in the IR CFT and compute the scaling dimensions of the leading duality-symmetric/anti-symmetric operators. In the large $k$ limit, these scaling dimensions approach $3 - \nu_{\rm XY}^{-1}$ as $1/k^2$, where $\nu_{\rm XY}$ is the correlation length exponent of the 3D XY model.

Abstract:The double copy programme relies crucially on the so-called color-kinematics duality which, in turn, is widely believed to descend from a kinematic algebra possessed by gauge theories. In this paper we construct the kinematic algebra of gauge invariant and off-shell self-dual Yang-Mills theory, up to trilinear maps. This structure is a homotopy algebra of the same type as the ones recently uncovered in Chern-Simons and full Yang-Mills theories. To make contact with known results for the self-dual sector, we show that it reduces to the algebra found by Monteiro and O'Connell upon taking light-cone gauge and partially solving the self-duality constraints. Finally, we test a double copy prescription recently proposed in [1] and reproduce self-dual gravity.

Abstract:We consider a three-dimensional lattice Abelian Higgs gauge model for a charged N -component scalar field φ , which is invariant under SO(N) global transformations for generic values of the parameters. We focus on the strong-coupling regime, in which the kinetic Hamiltonian term for the gauge field is a small perturbation, which is irrelevant for the critical behavior. The Hamiltonian depends on a parameter v , which determines the global symmetry of the model and the symmetry of the low-temperature phases. We present renormalization-group predictions, based on a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson effective description that relies on the identification of the appropriate order parameter and on the symmetry-breaking patterns that occur at the strong-coupling phase transitions. For v=0 , the global symmetry group of the model is SU(N) ; the corresponding model may undergo continuous transitions only for N=2 . For v≠0 , i.e., in the SO(N) symmetric case, continuous transitions (in the Heisenberg universality class) are possible also for N=3 and 4. We perform Monte Carlo simulations for N=2,3,4,6 , to verify the renormalization-group predictions. Abstract:We study information-theoretic properties of scalar models containing two Higgs doublets Φa , where a=1 , 2 is the flavor quantum number. Considering the 2-to-2 scattering ΦaΦb→ΦcΦd as a two-qubit system in the flavor subspace and the S -matrix as a quantum logic gate, we analyze the entanglement power of the S -matrix at the tree level, in the limit the gauge coupling is turned off. Demanding the suppression of flavor entanglement during the scattering, the perturbative S -matrix in the broken phase can only be in the equivalent class of the Identity gate and the scalar potential exhibits a maximally enhanced SO(8) symmetry acting on the eight real components of the two doublets. Abstract:We consider the three-dimensional (3D) lattice SU($N_c$) gauge Higgs theories with multicomponent ($N_f>1$) degenerate scalar fields and U($N_f$) global symmetry, focusing on systems with $N_c=2$, to identify critical behaviors that can be effectively described by the corresponding 3D SU($N_c$) gauge Higgs field theory. The field-theoretical analysis of the RG flow allows one to identify a stable charged fixed point for large values of $N_f$, that would control transitions characterized by the global symmetry-breaking pattern ${\rm U}(N_f)\rightarrow \mathrm{SU}(2)\otimes \mathrm{U}(N_f-2)$. Continuous transitions with the same symmetry-breaking pattern are observed in the SU(2) lattice gauge model for $N_f \ge 30$. Here we present a detailed finite-size scaling analysis of the Monte Carlo data for several large values of $N_f$. The results are in substantial agreement with the field-theoretical predictions obtained in the large-$N_f$ limit. This provides evidence that the SU($N_c$) gauge Higgs field theories provide the correct effective description of the 3D large-$N_f$ continuous transitions between the disordered and the Higgs phase, where the flavor symmetry breaks to $\mathrm{SU}(2)\otimes \mathrm{U}(N_f-2)$. Therefore, at least for large enough $N_f$, the 3D SU($N_c$) gauge Higgs field theories with multicomponent scalar fields can be nonperturbatively defined by the continuum limit of lattice discretizatized models with the same local and global symmetries.

Abstract:We perform a global analysis of a vectorlike extension of the Standard Model, which also features additional doublet and singlet scalars. The usual Yukawa interactions are forbidden in this setup by an extra U(1) global symmetry and the masses of the second and third family quarks and leptons are generated via the mixing with the vectorlike sector. We identify three best-fit benchmark scenarios which satisfy the constraints imposed by the stability of the scalar potential, the perturbativity of the coupling constants, the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the nonobservation of the flavor violating tau decays. We show that dominant contributions to the muon ( gвҲ’2 ) originate in this model from the charged Higgs/neutral lepton one-loop diagrams, thus correcting an inaccurate statement than can be found in the literature. We also perform a detailed LHC analysis of the benchmark scenarios. We investigate the experimental constraints stemming from direct searches for vectorlike quarks, vectorlike leptons, and exotic scalars. Abstract:Is there more to Dirac's gamma matrices than meets the eye? It turns out that gamma zero can be factorized into a product of three operators. This revelation facilitates the expansion of Dirac's space-time algebra to Clifford algebra Cl(0,6). The resultant rich geometric structure can be leveraged to establish a combined framework of the standard model and gravity, wherein a gravi-weak interaction between the extended vierbein field and the extended weak gauge field is allowed. Inspired by the composite Higgs model, we examine the vierbein field as an effective description of the fermion-antifermion condensation. The compositeness of space-time manifests itself at an energy scale which is different from the Planck scale. We propose that all the regular classical Lagrangian terms are of quantum condensation origin, thus possibly addressing the cosmological constant problem provided that we adopt an unconventional multi-scale renormalization procedure for quantum condensations that entail multiplications of divergent integrals. The Clifford algebra approach also permits a weaker form of charge conjugation without particle-antiparticle interchange, which leads to a Majorana-type mass that conserves lepton number. Additionally, in the context of spontaneous breaking of two global U(1) symmetries, we explore a three-Higgs-doublet model with Higgs VEVs 246 GeV, 41 GeV and 2.5 GeV which could explain the fermion mass hierarchies.

The self-dual Lorentz violating model: quantization, scattering and dual equivalence

Abstract:In this paper, we analysis the dynamics, at the quantum level, of the self-dual field minimally coupled to bosons with Lorentz symmetry breaking. We quantize the model by applying the Dirac bracket canonical quantization procedure. In addition, we test the relativistic invariance of the model by computing the boson-boson elastic scattering amplitude. Therefore, we show that the Lorentz symmetry breaking has been restored at the quantum level. We finalize our analysis by computing the dual equivalence between the self-dual model with Lorentz symmetry breaking coupled with bosonic matter and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons with Lorentz invariance violation coupled with bosonic field.

Abstract:We discuss a model with a SU$(2)_L$ doublet vector leptoquark (LQ), motivated by the recent experimental results relating to the lepton universality of $\overline{B} \to D^{(*)} \tau \overline{\nu}_\tau$. We find that scalar operators predicted by the LQ are favored to explain the deviations, taking into account the recent LHCb result. We investigate the extensive phenomenology of the model and conclude that $B_s\to\tau \overline\tau$, $B\to K\tau\overline\tau$, $B_u\to \tau\overline \nu_\tau$ and high-$p_T$ di-$\tau$ lepton signatures at the LHC will probe the interesting parameter region in the near future.

Abstract:We consider an extension of the Standard Model with two right-handed singlet fermions with mass at the electroweak scale that induce neutrino masses, plus a generic new physics sector at a higher scale $\Lambda$. We focus on the effective operators of lowest dimension $d=5$, which induce new production and decay modes for the singlet fermions. We assess the sensitivity of future Higgs Factories, such as FCC-ee, CLIC-380, ILC and CEPC, to the coefficients of these operators for various center of mass energies. We show that future lepton colliders can test the cut-off of the theory up to $\Lambda \simeq 500 - 1000\;$TeV, surpassing the reach of future indirect measurements of the Higgs and $Z$ boson widths. We also comment on the possibility of determining the underlying model flavor structure should a New Physics signal be observed, and on the impact of higher dimensional $d=6$ operators on the experimental signatures.

Abstract:We critically examine interpretations of hypothetical supersymmetric LHC signals, fitting to alternative wrong models of supersymmetry breaking. The signals we consider are some of the most constraining on the sparticle spectrum: invariant mass distributions with edges and end-points from the golden cascade decay chain \tilde{q}_L -> q \chi_2^0 (-> \tilde{l}^{\pm} l^{\mp} q) -> \chi_1^0 l^+ l^- q. We assume a CMSSM point to be the `correct' one, and fit the signals instead to minimal gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models (mGMSB) with a neutralino quasi-stable lightest supersymmetric particle, minimal anomaly mediation (mAMSB) and large volume string compactification models (LVS). mAMSB and LVS can be unambiguously discriminated against the CMSSM for the parameter point assumed and 1 inverse femtobarn of LHC data at 14 TeV. However, mGMSB would not be discriminated on the basis of the kinematic end-points alone, and would require further, more detailed investigation. The best-fit points of mGMSB and CMSSM look remarkably similar, making experimental discrimination at the LHC appear unlikely by any means.
