Abstract:Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a groundbreaking innovation making waves in digital payment systems in India. It has revolutionised financial transactions by offering enhanced convenience and security. While previous research has primarily focused on the macroeconomic effects of digital payments, our study examines UPI's impact on individual spending behavior. Through a survey of 276 respondents and 20 follow-up interviews, we found that approximately 75% of participants reported increased spending due to UPI. Many attributed this to UPI's intangible nature, which reduced feelings of guilt typically associated with spending. Additionally, participants provided suggestions to improve the user experience of existing UPI applications. Utilizing this feedback, we developed a high-fidelity prototype based on a popular UPI app in India and conducted usability testing with 34 participants. The insights gathered from this testing shaped the final prototype and its features. This study offers valuable design recommendations for UPI app developers and other stakeholders.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the impact of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on the consumption behavior of Indian users. Specifically, the research aims to answer the following key questions: 1. **How does the introduction of UPI affect the consumption habits of Indian users?** The study found that approximately 74.2% of the respondents said that their consumption increased after using UPI, while only 7% said that their consumption decreased. This indicates that the convenience and intangibility of UPI may reduce people's sense of guilt about consumption, leading to an increase in consumption. 2. **How do users view the convenience and efficiency of UPI transactions, and how do these perceptions shape their consumption behavior?** Most of the respondents (95.2%) think that UPI payment is very convenient or relatively convenient. This convenience makes users more inclined to use UPI for daily payments, which in turn affects their consumption frequency and amount. 3. **What are the differences in the adoption of UPI among different demographic groups (such as age, occupation, etc.), and how do these differences affect users' financial practices?** The study found that users of different age groups and occupations have different acceptance and usage methods of UPI. For example, young users and student groups are more inclined to use UPI frequently, while older users may be more conservative. 4. **What are the advantages and limitations of current UPI applications, and how can their design be improved to increase overall user satisfaction?** Through user feedback, the research team developed a high - fidelity prototype and conducted usability tests. The results showed that adding functions such as expense tracking, balance display, and budget limits can help improve users' financial awareness and sense of responsibility. In addition, the study also explored how users' perception of security and trust affect their consumption patterns, revealing the complex relationship between technology adoption and financial decision - making. The research fills the gap in the existing literature on the micro - impact of UPI on individual consumption behavior and provides valuable insights for the further optimization of mobile payment systems. ### Main Conclusions - **Increased Consumption**: Approximately 74.2% of users reported an increase in consumption after using UPI. - **High Satisfaction**: 91.5% of users are satisfied with their overall UPI experience. - **Convenience**: 95.2% of users think that UPI payment is very convenient or relatively convenient. - **Need for Expense Tracking**: 87.9% of users think that adding an expense - tracking function will help manage finances. Through these research results, the author provides valuable design suggestions for UPI application developers and other stakeholders to promote more responsible financial behavior and user experience.
