Abstract:How many permutations are needed so that every infinite-coinfinite set of natural numbers with asymptotic density can be rearranged to no longer have the same density? We prove that the density number $\mathfrak{dd}$, which answers this question, is equal to the least size of a non-meager set of reals, $\mathsf{non} (\mathcal{M})$. The same argument shows that a slight modification of the rearrangement number $\mathfrak{rr}$ of~\cite{BBBHHL20} is equal to $\mathsf{non} (\mathcal{M})$, and similarly for a cardinal invariant related to large-scale topology introduced by Banakh~\cite{Ba23}, thus answering a question of the latter. We then consider variants of $\mathfrak{dd}$ given by restricting the possible densities of the original set and / or of the permuted set, providing lower and upper bounds for these cardinals and proving consistency of strict inequalities. We finally look at cardinals defined in terms of relative density and of asymptotic mean, and relate them to the rearrangement numbers of~\cite{BBBHHL20}.

Cardinal invariants of a meager ideal

Abstract:Let $\mathcal M_X$ denote the ideal of meager subsets of a topological space $X$. We prove that if $X$ is a completely metrizable space without isolated points, then the smallest cardinality of a non-meager subset of $X$, denoted $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X)$, is exactly $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X) = \mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_{\mathbb R})$, where $\kappa$ is the minimum weight of a nonempty open subset of $X$. We also characterize the additivity and covering numbers for $\mathcal M_X$ in terms of simple topological properties of $X$. Some bounds are proved and some questions raised concerning the cofinality of $\mathcal M_X$ and the cofinality of the related ideal of nowhere dense subsets of $X$. We also show that if $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space with $\pi$-weight $\kappa$, then $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X) \leq \mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_{\mathbb R})$. This bound for compact Hausdorff spaces is not sharp, in the sense that it is consistent for such a space to have non-meager subsets of even smaller cardinality.

Abstract:The $\kappa$-density of a cardinal $\mu\ge\kappa$ is the least cardinality of a dense collection of $\kappa$-subsets of $\mu$ and is denoted by $\mathcal D(\mu,\kappa)$. The Singular Density Hypothesis (SDH) for a singular cardinal $\mu$ of cofinality $cf\mu=\kappa$ is the equation $\mathcal D(\mu,\kappa)=\mu^+$. The Generalized Density Hypothesis (GDH) for $\mu$ and $\lambda$ such that $\lambda\le\mu$ is: $\mathcal D(\mu,\lambda)=\mu$ if $cf\mu\not=cf\lambda$ and $\mathcal D(\mu,\lambda)=\mu^+$ if $cf\mu=cf\lambda$. Density is shown to satisfy Silver's theorem. The most important case is: Theorem 2.6. If $\kappa=cf\kappa<\theta=cf\mu<\mu$ and the set of cardinals $\lambda<\mu$ of cofinality $\kappa$ that satisfy the \textsf{SDH} is stationary in $\mu$ then the SDH holds at $\mu$. A more general version is given in Theorem 2.8 A corollary of Theorem 2.6 is: Theorem 3.2 If the Singular Density Hypothesis holds for all sufficiently large singular cardinals of some fixed cofinality $\kappa$, then for all cardinals $\lambda$ with $cf\lambda \ge \kappa$, for all sufficiently large $\mu$, the GDH holds.

Abstract:We investigate game-theoretic variants of cardinal invariants of the continuum. The invariants we treat are the reaping number $\mathfrak{r}$, the bounding number $\mathfrak{b}$, the dominating number $\mathfrak{d}$, and the additivity number of the null ideal $\operatorname{add}(\mathsf{null})$. We also consider games, called tallness games, defined according to ideals on $\omega$ and characterize that each of Player I and Player II has a winning strategy.

Abstract:The pinning down number $ {pd}(X)$ of a topological space $X$ is the smallest cardinal $\kappa$ such that for any neighborhood assignment $U:X\to \tau_X$ there is a set $A\in [X]^\kappa$ with $A\cap U(x)\ne\emptyset$ for all $x\in X$. Clearly, c$(X) \le {pd}(X) \le {d}(X)$. Here we prove that the following statements are equivalent: (1) $2^\kappa<\kappa^{+\omega}$ for each cardinal $\kappa$; (2) ${d}(X)={pd}(X)$ for each Hausdorff space $X$; (3) ${d}(X)={pd}(X)$ for each 0-dimensional Hausdorff space $X$. This answers two questions of Banakh and Ravsky. The dispersion character $\Delta(X)$ of a space $X$ is the smallest cardinality of a non-empty open subset of $X$. We also show that if ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$ then $X$ has an open subspace $Y$ with ${pd}(Y)<{d}(Y)$ and $|Y| = \Delta(Y)$, moreover the following three statements are equiconsistent: (i) There is a singular cardinal $\lambda$ with $pp(\lambda)>\lambda^+$, i.e. Shelah's Strong Hypothesis fails; (ii) there is a 0-dimensional Hausdorff space $X$ such that $|X|=\Delta(X)$ is a regular cardinal and ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$; (iii) there is a topological space $X$ such that $|X|=\Delta(X)$ is a regular cardinal and ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$. We also prove that $\bullet$ ${d}(X)={pd}(X)$ for any locally compact Hausdorff space $X$; $\bullet$ for every Hausdorff space $X$ we have $|X|\le 2^{2^{{pd}(X)}}$ and ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$ implies $\Delta(X)< 2^{2^{{pd}(X)}}$; $\bullet$ for every regular space $X$ we have $\min\{\Delta(X),\, w(X)\}\le 2^{{pd}(X)}\,$ and ${d}(X)<2^{{pd}(X)},\,$ moreover ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$ implies $\,\Delta(X)< {2^{{pd}(X)}}$.

Abstract:I establish several inequalities between cardinal characteristics of the continuum. In particular, it is shown that the partition splitting number is not larger than the uniformity of the meagre ideal; not all sets of reals having the cardinality of an (the?) $\varepsilon$-almost bisecting number are of strong measure zero; no fewer sets of strong measure zero than indicated by the statistically reaping number suffice to cover the reals; the pair-splitting number is not smaller than the evasion number; and the subseries number is neither smaller than the pair-splitting number nor than the minimum of the unbounding number and the unbisecting number. Moreover I provide a diagram putting these results into context and give a brief historical account.

Abstract:We continue investigating variants of the splitting and reaping numbers introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1808.02442" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1808.02442">arXiv:1808.02442</a>. In particular, answering a question raised there, we prove the consistency of $\mathrm{cof}(\mathcal{M})<\mathfrak{s}_{\frac{1}{2}}$ and of $\mathfrak{r}_{\frac{1}{2}}<\mathrm{add}(\mathcal{M})$. Moreover, we discuss their natural generalisations $\mathfrak{s}_\rho$ and $\mathfrak{r}_\rho$ for $\rho\in (0,1)$, and show that $\mathfrak{r}_\rho$ does not depend on $\rho$.

One-level density of families of elliptic curves and the Ratios Conjectures

Abstract:Using the ratios conjectures as introduced by Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer, we obtain closed formulas for the one-level density for two families of L-functions attached to elliptic curves. From those closed formulas, we can determine the underlying symmetry types of the families. The one-level scaling density for the first family corresponds to the orthogonal distribution as predicted by the conjectures of Katz and Sarnak, and the one-level scaling density for the second family is the sum of the Dirac distribution and the even orthogonal distribution. This seems to be a new phenomenon, caused by the fact that the curves of the second families have odd rank. Then, there is a trivial zero at the central point which accounts for the Dirac distribution, and also affects the remaining part of the scaling density which is then (maybe surprisingly) the even orthogonal distribution. The one-level density for this second family was studied in the past for test functions with Fourier transforms of small support, but since the Fourier transforms of the even orthogonal and odd orthogonal distributions are undistinguishable for small support, it was not possible to identify the distribution with those techniques. This can be done with the ratios conjectures, and it sheds more light on "independent" and "non-independent" zeroes and the repulsion phenomenon.

Abstract:We address several questions of Donald Monk related to irredundance and spread of Boolean algebras, gaining both some ZFC knowledge and consistency results. We show in ZFC that irr(B_0 times B_1)= max(irr(B_0),irr(B_1)). We prove consistency of the statement ``there is a Boolean algebra B such that irr(B)<s(B otimes B)'' and we force a superatomic Boolean algebra B_* such that s(B_*)=inc(B_*)=kappa, irr(B_*)=Id(B_*)=kappa^+ and Sub(B_*)=2^(kappa^+). Next we force a superatomic algebra B_0 such that irr(B_0)<inc(B_0) and a superatomic algebra B_1 such that t(B_1)>Aut(B_1). Finally we show that consistently there is a Boolean algebra B of size lambda such that there is no free sequence in B of length lambda, there is an ultrafilter of tightness lambda (so t(B)=lambda) and lambda notin Depth_(Hs)(B).

Abstract:Abstract upper densities are monotone and subadditive functions from the power set of positive integers into the unit real interval that generalize the upper densities used in number theory, including the upper asymptotic density, the upper Banach density, and the upper logarithmic density. At the open problem session of the Workshop ``Densities and their application'', held at St. Étienne in July 2013, G. Grekos asked a question whether there is a ``nice'' abstract upper density, whose the family of null sets is precisely a given ideal of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$, where ``nice'' would mean the properties of the familiar densities consider in number theory. In 2018, M. Di Nasso and R. Jin (Acta Arith. 185 (2018), no. 4) showed that the answer is positive for the summable ideals (for instance, the family of finite sets and the family of sequences whose series of reciprocals converge) when ``nice'' density means translation invariant and rich density (i.e. density which is onto the unit interval). In this paper we extend their result to all ideals with the Baire property.

Abstract:We show, in a certain specific sense, that both the density and the cardinality of a Hausdorff space are related to the "degree" to which the space is nonregular. It was shown by Šapirovskiĭ that d(X)≤πχ(X)c(X) for a regular space X and the author observed this holds if the space is only quasiregular. We generalize this result to the class of all Hausdorff spaces by introducing the nonquasiregularity degree nq(X) , which is countable when X is quasiregular, and showing d(X)≤πχ(X)c(X)nq(X) for any Hausdorff space X . This demonstrates that the degree to which a space is nonquasiregular has a fundamental and direct connection to its density and, ultimately, its cardinality. Importantly, if X is Hausdorff then nq(X) is "small" in the sense that nq(X)≤min⁡{ψc(X),L(X),pct(X)} . This results in a unified proof of both Šapirovskiĭ's density bound for regular spaces and Sun's bound πχ(X)c(X)ψc(X) for the cardinality of a Hausdorff space X . A consequence is an improved bound for the cardinality of a Hausdorff space. An example is given of a compact, Hausdorff space X for which our new bound is a strict improvement over Sun's bound.

Abstract:Let $\delta > 1/2$. We prove that if $A$ is a subset of the primes such that the relative density of $A$ in every reduced residue class is at least $\delta$, then almost all even integers can be written as the sum of two primes in $A$. The constant $1/2$ in the statement is best possible. Moreover we give an example to show that for any $\varepsilon > 0$ there exists a subset of the primes with relative density at least $1 - \varepsilon$ such that $A+A$ misses a positive proportion of even integers.

Cardinal invariants concerning functions whose sum is almost continuous

Abstract:A function f from reals to reals (f:R->R) is almost continuous (in the sense of Stallings) iff every open set in the plane which contains the graph of f contains the graph of a continuous function. Natkaniec showed that for any family F of continuum many real functions there exists g:R->R such that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Let AA be the smallest cardinality of a family F of real functions for which there is no g:R->R with the property that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Thus Natkaniec showed that AA is strictly greater than the continuum. He asked if anything more could be said. We show that the cofinality of AA is greater than the continuum, c. Moreover, we show that it is pretty much all that can be said about AA in ZFC, by showing that AA can be equal to any regular cardinal between c^+ and 2^c (with 2^c arbitrarily large). We also show that AA = AD where AD is defined similarly to AA but for the class of Darboux functions. This solves another problem of Maliszewski and Natkaniec.

Kneser's theorem for upper Buck density and relative results

Abstract:Kneser's theorem in the integers asserts that denoting by $ \underline{\mathrm{d}}$ the lower asymptotic density, if $\underline{\mathrm{d}}(X_1+\cdots+X_k)<\sum_{i=1}^k\underline{\mathrm{d}}(X_i)$ then the sumset $X_1+\cdots+X_k$ is \emph{periodic} for some positive integer $q$. In this article we establish a similar statement for upper Buck density and compare it with the corresponding result due to Jin involving upper Banach density. We also provide the construction of sequences verifying counterintuitive properties with respect to Buck density of a sequence $A$ and its sumset $A+A$.

On an indivisibility version of Iizuka's conjecture

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the existence of positive density collection of $d\in\mathbb{N}$ such that class numbers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})\dots\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+n})$ are not divisible by $3^k$ for $n=3^{k+1}-5$ for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$. This result constitutes the indivisibility counterpart of Iizuka's conjecture. For the same choice of $n$, we prove the existence of positive density collection of $d$, in the set of negative integers, such that the class numbers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1}),\dots,\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+n})$ are not divisible by $3^{k+1}$. Further, we write the set of all square-free natural numbers as an increasing sequence $(d_n)$ and prove the existence of positive density collection of $i$ in the set of natural numbers such that the class numbers of the number fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_i}), \ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+1}}),\ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+2}}),$ $ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+3}}),\dots, \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+n}})$ are not divisible by $3^k$ for $n=3^{k+1}-5$. For higher degree, we show that certain limit of the collection of imaginary bi-quadratic fields whose class number is not divisible by $3$ over all the imaginary biquadratic fields is positive.

A Chebotarev Density Theorem over Local Fields

Abstract:We compute the $p$-adic densities of points with a given splitting type along a (generically) finite map, analogous to the classical Chebotarev theorem over number fields and function fields. Under some mild hypotheses, we prove that these densities satisfy a functional equation in the size of the residue field. This functional equation is a direct reflection of Poincaré duality in étale cohomology. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Bhargava, Cremona, Fisher, and Gajović on factorization densities of p-adic polynomials. The key tool is the notion of admissible pairs associated to a group, which we use as an invariant of the inertia and decomposition action of a local field on the fibers of the finite map. We compute the splitting densities by Möbius inverting certain p-adic integrals along the poset of admissible pairs. The conjecture on factorization densities follows immediately for tamely ramified primes from our general results. We reduce the complete conjecture (including the wild primes) to the existence of an explicit "Tate-type" resolution of the "resultant locus" over the integers and complete the proof of the conjecture by constructing this resolution.

On sets with missing differences in compact abelian groups

Abstract:A much-studied problem posed by Motzkin asks to determine, given a finite set $D$ of integers, the so-called Motzkin density of $D$, i.e., the supremum of upper densities of sets of integers whose difference set avoids $D$. We study the natural analogue of this problem in compact abelian groups. Using ergodic-theoretic tools, this is shown to be equivalent to the following discrete problem: given a lattice $\Lambda\subset \mathbb{Z}^r$, letting $D$ be the image in $\mathbb{Z}^r/\Lambda$ of the standard basis, determine the Motzkin density of $D$ in $\mathbb{Z}^r/\Lambda$. We study in particular the periodicity question: is there a periodic $D$-avoiding set of maximal density in $\mathbb{Z}^r/\Lambda$? The Greenfeld--Tao counterexample to the periodic tiling conjecture implies that the answer can be negative. On the other hand, we prove that the answer is positive in several cases, including the case rank$(\Lambda)=1$ (in which we give a formula for the Motzkin density), the case rank$(\Lambda)=r-1$, and hence also the case $r\leq 3$. It follows that, for up to three missing differences, the Motzkin density in a compact abelian group is always a rational number.

Cardinal characteristics associated with small subsets of reals

Abstract:Inspired by Bartoszyński's work on small sets, we introduce a new ideal defined by interval partitions on natural numbers and summable sequences of positive reals. Similarly, we present another ideal that relies on Bartoszyński's and Shelah's characterization of $F_\sigma$ measure zero sets. We demonstrate that they are $\sigma$-ideals and provide characterizations of the families of all small sets and the ideal induced by $F_\sigma$ measure zero sets. We also study the cardinal characteristics associated with the introduced ideals. We discuss their connection to Cichoń's diagram and present related consistency results.

Arithmetic density and congruences of $\ell$-regular bipartitions $II$

Abstract:Let $ B_{\ell}(n)$ denote the number of $\ell-$regular bipartitions of $n.$ In 2013, Lin \cite{Lin2013} proved a density result for $B_4(n).$ He showed that for any positive integer $k,$ $B_4(n)$ is almost always divisible by $2^k.$ In this article, we improved his result. We prove that $B_{2^{\alpha}m}(n)$ and $B_{3^{\alpha}m}(n)$ are almost always divisible by arbitrary power of $2$ and $3$ respectively. Further, we obtain an infinities families of congruences and multiplicative formulae for $B_2(n)$ and $B_4(n)$ by using Hecke eigenform theory. Next, by using a result of Ono and Taguchi on nilpotency of Hecke operator, we also find an infinite families of congruences modulo arbitrary power of $2$ satisfied by $B_{2^{\alpha}}(n).$

Density results for the parity of $(4k,k)$-singular overpartitions

Abstract:The $(k,i)$-singular overpartitions, combinatorial objects introduced by Andrews in 2015, are known to satisfy Ramanujan-type congruences modulo any power of prime coprime to $6k$. In this paper we consider the parity of the number $\overline{C}_{k,i}(n)$ of $(k,i)$-singular overpartitions of $n$. In particular, we give a sufficient condition on even values of $k$ so that the values of $\overline{C}_{4k,k}(n)$ are almost always even. Furthermore, we show that for odd values of $k \leq 23$, $k\neq 19$, certain subsequences of $\overline{C}_{4k,k}(n)$ are almost always even.
