Abstract:The velocity slip and temperature jump for a two-dimensional rough plate under hyper-sonic conditions were analyzed using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC)method.Surface roughness was explicitly modeled by introducing various structures on the flat plate.The influences of relative roughness height,which involves the roughness height,roughness spacing,incoming velocity,and the degree of rarefaction,were analyzed and discussed.It is found that with the increase of the relative roughness height,the jump temperature increases,while the slip velocity decreases gradually.The effects of surface roughness on the slip coefficients can be attributed to the change of accommodation coefficients.A new slip model for rough surfaces was established in this paper,which accounts for the coupling effects of gas rarefaction and surface roughness,with-out the effort to model the surface roughness explicitly.The nitrogen flows in the microchannel,and flows over a blunt cone and an axisymmetric bi-conic body,were simulated under the modified and conventional slip boundary conditions,respectively.The numerical solutions were validated with experimental data.It can be safely concluded that compared with the traditional first-order slip boundary conditions,the modified slip model improves the accuracy of macroscopic properties,especially the heat transfer coefficient.
Skin-Friction and Forced Convection from Rough and Smooth Plates

Abstract:Since the 1930s, theories of skin-friction drag from plates with rough surfaces have been based by analogy to turbulent flow in pipes with rough interiors. Failure of this analogy at slow velocities has frustrated attempts to create a comprehensive theory. Utilizing the concept of a self-similar roughness which disrupts the boundary layer at all scales, this investigation derives formulas for a rough or smooth plate's skin-friction coefficient and forced convection heat transfer given its characteristic length, root-mean-squared (RMS) height-of-roughness, isotropic spatial period, Reynolds number, and the fluid's Prandtl number. This novel theory was tested with 456 heat transfer and friction measurements in 32 data-sets from one book, six peer-reviewed studies, and the present apparatus. Compared with the present theory, the RMS relative error (RMSRE) values of the 32 data-sets span 0.75% through 8.2%, with only four data-sets exceeding 6%. Prior work formulas have smaller RMSRE on only four of the data-sets.

Abstract:The problem of mixed convection flow about a vertical plate fin embedded in a porous medium, taking into consideration the interaction between conduction in the fin and convection in the surrounding fluid, has been analyzed. It was found that the governing parameters for the problem are the Prandtl number Pr, the mixed convection parameter ω, and the convection-conduction parameter Ncc. The results of the analysis were found to be similar to those of the classical fluids. In particular, at a high value of the convection-conduction parameter Ncc, the local heat transfer coefficient is found to decrease first, attain a minimum value, and then increase in the stream-wise direction. This behavior can be attributed to the enhanced buoyancy force resulting from an increase in the wall-to-fluid temperature difference along the stream-wise direction. The total heat transfer rate was found to decrease with increasing Ncc.
Experimental Investigation of Mixed Convection in Rectangular Channel with Attached Flat Heated Plate

Abstract:The flow and heat transfer in a rectangular channel with a flat heated plate in the middle section was experimentally investigated.The rectangular channel was made of aluminum alloy and thermally adiabatic at all four walls.The heated plate was made of alloy steel and subjected to uniform heat flux.The heau transfer processes in mixed convective air flow through the rectangular channel were under various operating conditions: Pr as 0.7,Reynolds number ranging from 334 to 1 911,inclination angle ranging from-60° to 60°.Data measured show that all the wall temperatures at the same cross section were almost equal.The boundary condition,constant axial wall heat flux at all the walls,was applied in the data reduction.The experimental results agree well with the data reported in the literature and the reliability of the experimental setup and the data reduction is confirmed.The results show that the heat transfer coefficient is about two or three times as large as that in the laminar fully developed region.The influence of Reynolds numbers and channel inclinations on the flow and heat transfer was also investigated.The experimental results show that the average Nusselt numbers and pressure drop increase with the increase of the Reynolds number from 334 to about 1 500 and the increase of the inclination angle from-60°to 60°.However,when the Reynolds number increases to over 1 800,the average Nusselt numbers and pressure drop are independent of the inclination angle.

Numerical Heat Transfer Part A Applications

Abstract:Numerical studies were conducted to investigate the simultaneous natural-convection heat transfer above and below an isothermal thin plate in an infinite space. The full two-dimensional conservation equations for laminar flows were solved. The numerical approach was based on the finite-volume technique with a nonstaggered grid arrangement. The SIMPLE algorithm was used for handling the pressure-velocity coupling. Plate width and temperature were used to vary the Rayleigh number over the range 1.0 2 10 5 to 1.7 2 10 7 . The expressions for numerical local and average Nusselt number were correlated, and horizontal velocity and temperature profiles were provided. It was found that the upper-surface Nusselt numbers are smaller than the corresponding lower-surface Nusselt numbers. Numerical results for upward- and downward-facing isothermal horizontal plates (single-sided heat transfer) were also shown for comparison. For these cases, Nusselt numbers on the upward-facing surface are larger than those on the downward-facing surface.

Abstract:The paper presents a theoretical study using the Karman-Pohlhausen method for describing the transient heat exchange between the boundary-layer free convection and a vertical flat plate embedded in a porous medium. The unsteady behavior is developed after the generation of an impulsive heat flux step at the right-hand side of the plate. Two cases are considered according to whether the plate has a finite thickness or no thickness. The time and space evolution of the interface temperature is evidenced.

Abstract:Natural convection heat transfer to air from an array of five vertical parallel plane plates has been studied experimentally. Measurements of plate surface temperature and velocity between the plates are made under the condition of uniform surface heat flux. The local Nusselt numbers along the central line of the plates are obtained. The induced flow rate between the plates is estimated from the measured velocity profiles. The experimental results are compared with the numerical solution obtained by Miyatake and Fujii for two vertical parallel plane plates.

Abstract:According to the view of heat transfer, the process of the fluid flow with high temperature and high speed over a flat plate may be considered as the heat transfer process within a compressible thermal boundary layer. Based on the numerical results of thermal isolation assumption, combining the temperature comparison with modification method, a coupled method of convection heat transfer coefficient with temperature field of the plate is established, and the characteristics of the thermal response for the flat plate is dominated. Take some ribbed plates as instances, the convection heat transfer coefficient and temperature field of the plate are simulated through the provided coupled method. The results show that, not only the position and materials of the plate influence the convection heat transfer coefficient, but also the time.

Abstract:Hypersonic near-continuum flow over a flat plate with micro-scale roughness is studied using the kinetic direct simulation Monte Carlo method on roughness module configurations with different relative roughness (h) values and roughness densities (RN) under a matrix of freestream parameters (Mach number Ma∞, Reynolds number Re∞, temperature T∞, and Knudsen number Kn∞). An open-source Stochastic PArallel Rarefied-gas Time-accurate Analyzer code, which enables Cartesian grid adaption and efficient parallelization, is utilized for the rough-plate flow simulations. Flowfield analysis reveals that the local patterns inside the roughness modules evolve starting from closed (two vortices) via transitional ultimately to open (one vortex) by an increase in h, with co-existing shrinkage of high-density zones and attenuation of density peaks. The surface quantities are significantly influenced by the flowfield characteristics, and a local association between the peak heat flux and the peak pressure is identified. Non-dimensional peak heating and pressure correlation laws for the local peak heat flux and pressure coefficients in terms of two length-scale transformations are proposed, enabling the capture of local heating and pressure extrema on rough plates with varying h and RN conditions under different Ma∞, Re∞, and T∞ parameter values. The peak heat flux and pressure coefficients can be described by analogous correlating equations expressed by first-order-polynomial or power functions. An increase in the rarefaction degree (Kn∞) deviating from the near-continuum regime causes the correlation laws to fail.

Abstract:Investigation to the mixed convective heat and mass transfer over a horizontal plate has been carried out. By applying transformation group theory to analysis of the governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion, we show the existence of similarity solution for the problem provided that the temperature and concentration at the wall are proportional to x 4/(7-5n) and that the moving speed of the plate is proportional to x (3-n)/(7-5n), and further obtain a similarity representation of the problem. The similarity equations have been solved numerically by a fourth-order Runge–Kutta scheme. The numerical results obtained for Pr=0.72 and various values of the parameters Sc, K 1, K 2 and K 3 reveals the influence of the parameters on the flow, heat and mass transfer behavior.

Abstract:Numerical studies were conducted to investigate the natural convection heat transfer around a uniformly heated thin plate with arbitrary inclination in an infinite space. The numerical approach was based on the finite volume technique with a nonstaggered grid arrangement. For handling the pressure–velocity coupling the SIMPLE-algorithm was used. QUICK scheme and first order upwind scheme were employed for discretization of the momentum and energy convective terms respectively. Plate width and heating rate were used to vary the modified Rayleigh number over the range of 4.8×10 6 to 1.87×10 8 . Local and average heat transfer characteristics were compared with regarding to the inclination angle. The empirical expressions for local and average Nusselt number were correlated. It has been found that for inclination angle less than 10 ∘ , the flow and heat transfer characteristics are complicated and the average Nusselt number can not be correlated by one equation while for inclination angle larger than 10 ∘ , the average Nusselt number can be correlated into an elegant correlation.

Abstract:External modulation on thermal convection has been studied extensively to achieve the control of flow structures and heat-transfer efficiency. In this paper, we carry out direct numerical simulations on Rayleigh–Bénard convection accounting for both the modulation of wall shear and roughness over the Rayleigh number range $1.0 \times 10^6 \le Ra \le 1.0 \times 10^8$ , the wall shear Reynolds number range $0 \le Re_w \le 5000$ , the aspect-ratio range $2 \le \varGamma \le 4{\rm \pi}$ , and the dimensionless roughness height range $0 \le h \le 0.2$ at fixed Prandtl number $Pr = 1$ . Under the combined actions of wall shear and roughness, with increasing $Re_w$ , the heat flux is initially enhanced in the buoyancy-dominant regime, then has an abrupt transition near the critical shear Reynolds number $Re_{w,cr}$ , and finally enters the purely diffusion regime dominated by shear. Based on the crossover of the kinetic energy production between the buoyancy-dominant and shear-dominant regimes, a physical model is proposed to predict the transitional scaling behaviour between $Re_{w,cr}$ and $Ra$ , i.e. $Re_{w,cr} \sim Ra^{9/14}$ , which agrees well with our numerical results. The reason for the observed heat-transport enhancement in the buoyancy-dominant regime is further explained by the fact that the moving rough plates introduce an external shear to strengthen the large-scale circulation (LSC) in the vertical direction and serve as a conveyor belt to increase the chances of the interaction between the LSC and secondary flows within cavities, which triggers more thermal plumes, efficiently transports the trapped hot (cold) fluids outside cavities.

Abstract:A numerical study of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in a plate channel filled with solid (metallic) particles is presented in this paper. The study uses the thermal equilibrium model and a newly developed numerical model which does not assume idealized local thermal equilibrium between the solid particles and the fluid. The numerical simulation results are compared with the experimental data in reference [2]. The paper investigates the effects of the assumption of local thermal equilibrium versus non-thermal equilibrium, the thermal conductivity of the solid particles and the particle diameter on convective heat transfer.

Abstract:The surface roughness correction to the near-field heat transfer between two rough bulk materials is discussed by using second-order perturbation theory. The results allow for estimating the impact of surface roughness to the heat transfer in recent experiments between two plates and between a microsphere and a plate (using the Derjaguin approximation). Furthermore, we show that the proximity approximation for describing rough surfaces is valid for distances much smaller than the correlation length of the surface roughness even if the heat transfer is dominated by the coupling of surface modes.

Abstract:The conjugated convection-conduction heat transfer from a vertical steel plate with discrete heat sources simulating the heating pipes of the wrapped-type heat exchanger is investigated experimentally and numerically. The temperature of the plate distributes wavily along the height direction and the wave amplitudes increase with the widening heating space under both heat flux and temperature conditions. The expressions of the average Nusselt number and Rayleigh number computed by the average heater temperature remain as Num being equal to cRan, where c and n are the functions of heating space respectively. The correlations are obtained via fitting the experimental data with error ±5% within range of Ra from 5 × 108 to 5 × 109. The numerical results show that the uneven temperature distributions of the plate lead to increase of the velocity boundary layer thickness and fluctuation of the local Nusselt number along vertical direction.

Abstract:The Brinkman-Forchheime-extended Darcy model and the theory of equilibrium between fluid and porous medium were used to establish the mass conservation equation,momentum conservation equations and energy conservation equation of the two-dimensional laminar flow over an isothermal plate in porous medium.The equations were simplified by analyzing the order of magnitude of each item.The formulas of the velocity distribution and temperature distribution in the boundary layer,and surface viscous friction coefficient,convection heat transfer coefficient have been obtained by use of the integration method.It is shown that the boundary layer thickness in the porous medium increases very quickly at the beginning of the plate and reaches a steady thickness very soon,which is different obviously from that of a plain plate.But the thermal boundary layer thickness increases continuously along the flow direction and is similar to the situation of a plain plate.

Abstract:Boundary-layer analysis is performed for mixed convection about a horizontal flat plate in a saturated porous medium with aiding external flows, where the governing parameter is found to be Ra(RePr)32. Similarity solutions are obtained for (i) horizontal flat plates at zero angle of attack with constant heat flux and (ii) stagnation point flows about horizontal flat plates with wall temperature varying as Twαχ2. Temperature and velocity profiles for these two cases at selected values of Ra(RePr)32 are presented. The heat-transfer rate is shown to be asymptotically approaching the forced and free convection values as the value of Ra(RePr)32 approaches the limits of 0 and ∞'. The criteria for pure and mixed convection about horizontal flat plates in porous media are established.

Abstract:Analyses are made for steady conjugate free convection about a vertical fin embedded in a porous medium at high Rayleigh numbers. Two types of heat sources at the fin base are considered: a plate heat source and a circular heat source. With the thin-fin approximation for the fin and the boundary-layer approximation for the convective fluid, similarity solutions are obtained for the free convection boundary-layer flow adjacent to a long vertical plate fin with its conductivity-thickness product varying as a power function of distance from the specified origin. Analytical expressions are obtained for the local surface heat flux, local Nusselt number and thermal boundary-layer thickness along the fin. A numerical example, with plots of streamlines and isotherms, is presented for a constant cross-section vertical plate fin heated by a plate heat source and embedded in a porous medium.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe the stead MHD mixed convection flow over a permeable vertical flat plate embedded in a Darcy–Forchheimer porous medium. Using appropriate similarity variables, the partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary (similar) differential equations, which are numerically solved using the bvp4c function in MATLAB. The numerical results are used to present graphically and in tables, illustrations of the reduced skin friction, reduced Nusselt number, velocity, and temperature profiles. Dual (upper and lower branch) solutions are discovered in this exciting analysis. Although numerous studies on the mixed convection past a vertical plate embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium exist, none of the researchers have focused on the Darcy–Forchheimer flow with asymptotic solutions. The behavior of the flow and heat transfer has been thoroughly analyzed with the variations in governing parameters, such as Darcy–Forchheimer suction/injection , MHD and mixed convection parameters.

Abstract:Abstract The combined heat and mass transfer phenomenon is a significant aspect of engineering and industrial processes. This phenomenon finds applications in various areas such as air conditioning, cooling and heating control of electronic devices, reactors, chemical systems, and emission processes. This research model focuses on the analysis of mixed convection flow of a viscous fluid with heat and mass transfer on an inclined surface with porous medium characteristics. The study also considers external heat transfer effects, radiation, Soret influence, and chemical reactions. A perturbation solution is derived in closed form, and the impact of various parameters on the thermal behavior is investigated. A comparative analysis of the heating and cooling regimes in plate flow is conducted, revealing a reduction in velocity in the heated plate regime with changes in the permeability parameter and an increase in concentration phase due to the Soret number.
