Abstract:Let $pod_2(n)$ denote the number of $2$-regular partitions of $n$ with distinct odd parts (even parts are unrestricted). In this article, we obtain congruences for $pod_2(n)$ mod $2$ and mod $8$ using some generating function manipulations and the theory of Hecke eigenform.

Abstract:The partition function $pod(n)$ enumerates the partitions of $n$ wherein odd parts are distinct and even parts are unrestricted. Recently, a number of properties for $pod(n)$ have been established. In this paper, for $k\in\{0,2\}$ we consider the partitions of $n$ into distinct parts not congruent to $k$ modulo $4$ and the $4$-regular partitions of $n$ in order to obtain new properties for $pod(n)$. In this context, we derive two new infinite families of linear inequalities involving the function $pod(n)$ and obtain new identities of Watson type.

PED and POD partitions: combinatorial proofs of recurrence relations

Abstract:PED partitions are partitions with even parts distinct while odd parts are unrestricted. Similarly, POD partitions have distinct odd parts while even parts are unrestricted. Merca proved several recurrence relations analytically for the number of PED partitions of $n$. They are similar to the recurrence relation for the number of partitions of $n$ given by Euler's pentagonal number theorem. We provide combinatorial proofs for all of these theorems and also for the pentagonal number theorem for PED partitions proved analytically by Fink, Guy, and Krusemeyer. Moreover, we prove combinatorially a recurrence for POD partitions given by Ballantine and Merca, Beck-type identities involving PED and POD partitions, and several other results about PED and POD partitions.

Abstract:Let pod−k(n) denote the number of partition k -tuples of n where the odd parts in each partition are distinct. By utilizing some q -series manipulations and iterative computations, we derive dozens of internal congruences modulo powers of 5 for pod−k(n) with 1≤k≤4 . For example, one result proved in the present paper is that for any n≥0 and 2≤m≤12 , pod−4(5Nmn+5Nm+12)≡pod−4(5mn+5m+12) (mod5m), where Nm=2×5m−2+m . Further, we conjecture that these internal congruences exist in the corresponding internal congruence families modulo any powers of 5.

Abstract:Let $\overline{p}_o(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$ into odd parts. The partition function $\overline{p}_o(n)$ has been the subject of many recent studies where many explicit Ramanujan-like congruences were discovered. In this paper, we provide three linear recurrence relation for $\overline{p}_o(n)$. Several connections with partitions into parts not congruent to $2 \pmod 4$, overpartitions and partitions into distinct parts are presented in this context.

Abstract:Let $ {\rm{pod}}_\ell(n) $ and $ {\rm{ped}}_\ell(n) $ denote the number of $ \ell $-regular partitions of a positive integer $ n $ into distinct odd parts and the number of $ \ell $-regular partitions of a positive integer $ n $ into distinct even parts, respectively. Our first goal in this note was to prove two congruence relations for $ {\rm{pod}}_\ell(n) $. Furthermore, we found a formula for the action of the Hecke operator on a class of eta-quotients. As two applications of this result, we obtained two infinite families of congruence relations for $ {\rm pod}_5(n) $. We also proved a congruence relation for $ {\rm{ped}}_\ell(n) $. In particular, we established a congruence relation modulo 2 connecting $ {\rm{pod}}_\ell(n) $ and $ {\rm{ped}}_\ell(n) $.

Abstract:Partitions with even (respectively odd) parts distinct and all other parts unrestricted are often referred to as PED (respectively POD) partitions. In this article, we generalize these notions and study sets of partitions in which parts with fixed residue(s) modulo r are distinct while all other parts are unrestricted. We also study partitions in which parts divisible by r (respectively congruent to r modulo 2r) must occur with multiplicity greater than one.

Abstract:A classic theorem of Uchimura states that the difference between the sum of the smallest parts of the partitions of n into an odd number of distinct parts and the corresponding sum for an even number of distinct parts is equal to the number of divisors of n . In this article, we initiate the study of the k th smallest part of a partition into distinct parts of any integer n , namely . Using , we generalize the above result for the k th smallest parts of partitions for any positive integer k and show its connection with divisor functions for general k and derive interesting special cases. We also study weighted partitions involving with another parameter z , which helps us obtain several new combinatorial and analytical results. Finally, we prove sum-of-tails identities associated with the weighted partition function involving .

We also examine the behavior of $ped_{-2}(n)$ modulo $8$ in detail where $ped_{-2}(n)$ denotes the number of bipartitions of $n$ with even parts distinct. As a result, we find infinite families of congruences for $ped_{2}(n)$ modulo $8$.

Abstract:A partition n = p_1 + p_2 + ... + p_k with 1 <= p_1 <= p_2 <= ... <= p_k is called non-squashing if p_1 + ... + p_j <= p_{j+1} for 1 <= j <= k-1. Hirschhorn and Sellers showed that the number of non-squashing partitions of n is equal to the number of binary partitions of n. Here we exhibit an explicit bijection between the two families, and determine the number of non-squashing partitions with distinct parts, with a specified number of parts, or with a specified maximal part. We use the results to solve a certain box-stacking problem.

Abstract:Let p o ( n ) (resp. p e ( n ) ) denote the number of partitions of n with more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts). Recently, Kim, Kim and Lovejoy proved that p o ( n ) > p e ( n ) for all n > 2 and conjectured that d o ( n ) > d e ( n ) for all n > 19 where d o ( n ) (resp. d e ( n ) ) denote the number of partitions into distinct parts having more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts). In this paper we provide combinatorial proofs for both the result and the conjecture of Kim, Kim and Lovejoy. In addition, we show that if we restrict the smallest part of the partition to be 2, then the parity bias is reversed. That is, if q o ( n ) (resp. q e ( n ) ) denote the number of partitions of n with more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts) where the smallest part is at least 2, then we have q o ( n ) 7 . We also look at some more parity biases in partitions with restricted parts.

Abstract:We establish a recursive relation for the bipartition number $p_2(n)$ which might be regarded as an analogue of Euler's recursive relation for the partition number $p(n)$. Two proofs of the main result are proved in this article. The first one is using the generating function, and the second one is using combinatoric objects (called ``symbols'') created by Lusztig for studying representation theory of finite classical groups.
