Abstract:Let E be an elliptic curve over Q with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field K. In 1991, by studying a certain special value of the Katz two-variable p-adic L-function lying outside the range of $p$-adic interpolation, K. Rubin formulated a p-adic variant of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture when $E(K)$ is infinite, and he proved that his conjecture is true for E(K) of rank one. When E(K) is finite, however, the statement of Rubin's original conjecture no longer applies, and the relevant special value of the appropriate $p$-adic L-function is equal to zero. In this paper we extend our earlier work and give an unconditional proof of an analogue of Rubin's conjecture when E(K) is finite.

Abstract:A theorem of Paul Roberts states that the integral closure of a regular local ring in a generically abelian extension is Cohen-Macaulay, provided the characteristic of the residue field does not divide the order of the Galois group. An example of Koh shows the conclusion is false in the modular case. After a modification to the statement concerning ramification over $p$ in codimension one, we give an extension of Roberts's theorem to the modular case for unramified regular local rings in mixed characteristic when the $p$-torsion of the Galois group is annihilated by $p$.

Abstract:We prove the existence of nontrivial rational Heegner points on the elliptic curve $y^2 = x^3 + p$ when $p \equiv 5 \pmod{36}$ and $h_K$ is odd, and on the elliptic curve $y^2 = x^3 - p$ when $p \equiv 23 \pmod{36}$ and $h_K$ is odd. This follows from our expression for the fundamental unit of the non-Galois cubic extension $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p})$ in terms of the class number $h_K$ and the norm of a special value of a modular function of level $6$ for any odd prime $p \equiv 2$ or $5 \pmod{9}$, which is an analogue of a theorem of Dirichlet in 1840 expressing the fundamental unit of a real quadratic field in terms of the class number and a product of cyclotomic units.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.

Abstract:Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime number, $E/\mathbb{Q}$ an elliptic curve with good supersingular reduction at $p$, and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field such that the root number of $E$ over $K$ is $-1$. When $p$ is split in $K$, Castella and Wan formulated the plus and minus Heegner point main conjecture for $E$ along the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$, and proved it for semistable curves. We generalize their results to two settings: 1. Under the assumption that $p$ is split in $K$ but without assuming $a_p(E)=0$, we study Sprung-type main conjectures for $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type abelian varieties at non-ordinary primes and prove it under some conditions. 2. We formulate, relying on the recent work of the first-named author with Kobayashi and Ota, plus and minus Heegner point main conjectures for elliptic curves when $p$ is inert in $K$, and prove the minus main conjecture for semistable elliptic curves. These results yield a $p$-converse to the Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem for $E$. Our method relies on Howard's framework of bipartite Euler system, Zhang's resolution of Kolyvagin's conjecture and the recent proof of Kobayashi's main conjecture.

Abstract:Cyclic number fields of odd prime degree are constructed as ray class fields over the rational number field. They are collected in multiplets sharing a common conductor and discriminant. The algorithms are implemented in Magma and applied to all cyclic quintic and cyclic cubic fields with conductors below 100000. Our primary attention is devoted to the theory of cyclic cubic fields with two or three prime divisors of the conductor. These fields form doublets and quartets. Theoretical techniques comprise cubic residue conditions between the primes dividing the conductor, the structure of 3-class groups of all components of doublets and quartets, Galois cohomology of unit groups and ambiguous principal ideals, absolute genus fields and their bicyclic bicubic subfields, class number relations, transfer kernels and abelian quotient invariants of unramified cyclic cubic extensions and their impact on the class field tower, pattern recognition via Artin transfers on descendant trees of finite groups with order a power of 3, the Shafarevich Theorem on the relation rank of the 3-class field tower group, and the Galois action on the tower group and on its metabelianization. Rigorous proofs are given for the first occurrences of three-stage towers over cyclic cubic fields with elementary bicyclic or tricyclic or non-elementary bicyclic 3-class group. Experimentally, the second p-class groups and the length of the p-class tower are determined for all conductors below 100000 and for p=2,3,5, with the exception of the few intricate octets. An interesting application is able to identify and realize the closed groups by Andozhskii and Tsvetkov.
The $p$-adic limits of class numbers in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:This article discusses variants of Weber's class number problem in the spirit of arithmetic topology to connect the results of Sinnott--Kisilevsky and Kionke. Let $p$ be a prime number. We first prove the $p$-adic convergence of class numbers in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a global field and a similar result in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-cover of a compact 3-manifold. Secondly, we establish an explicit formula for the $p$-adic limit of the $p$-power-th cyclic resultants of a polynomial using roots of unity of orders prime to $p$, the $p$-adic logarithm, and the Iwasawa invariants. Finally, we give thorough investigations of torus knots, twist knots, and elliptic curves; we complete the list of the cases with $p$-adic limits being in $\mathbb{Z}$ and find the cases such that the base $p$-class numbers are small and $\nu$'s are arbitrarily large.

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Abstract:In this paper, using the theory of double coverings of cyclotomic fields, we give a formula for [Formula: see text], where K = ℚ(ζn), G = Gal (K/ℚ), 𝔽2 = ℤ/2ℤ and UK is the unit group of K. We explicitly determine all the cyclotomic fields K = ℚ(ζn) such that [Formula: see text]. Then we apply it to the unit square problem raised in [Y. Li and X. Zhang, Global unit squares and local unit squares, J. Number Theory128 (2008) 2687–2694]. In particular, we prove that the unit square problem does not hold for ℚ(ζn) if n has more than three distinct prime factors, i.e. for each odd prime p, there exists a unit, which is a square in all local fields ℚ(ζn)v with v | p but not a square in ℚ(ζn), if n has more than three distinct prime factors.

We study Mazur's conjecture on the growth of the Mordell--Weil ranks of an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field, where $p$ is a prime of good reduction for $E$. In particular, we obtain criteria that may be checked through explicit calculation, thus allowing for the verification of Mazur's conjecture in specific examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we proved a local arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula for a $U(1, 1)$-Shimura variety at a ramified prime, a.k.a. a Kudla-Rapoport conjecture at a ramified case. The formula needs to be modified from the original Kudla-Rapoport conjecture. In the process, we also gives an explicit decomposition of the special divisors of the Rapoport-Zink space of unitary type $(1, 1)$ (Krämer model). A key ingredient is to relate the Rapoport-Zink space to the Drinfeld upper plane.

Abstract:A characterization of the quotients of $p$-class tower groups of quadratic fields by terms in the lower $p$-central series plays an important role in the formulation of conjectures by Boston, Hajir and the author about the distribution of such groups as the base field varies. In this paper, another equivalent criterion is given which resolves an issue that arose as part of the group-theoretical calculations carried out in relation to these conjectures.

Abstract:Let $q\geq2$ be a prime power and consider Drinfeld modules of rank 2 over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We prove that there are no points with coordinates being Drinfeld singular moduli, on a family of hyperbolas $XY=\gamma$, where $\gamma$ is a polynomial of small degree. This is an effective André-Oort theorem for these curves. We also prove that there are at most finitely many Drinfeld singular moduli that are algebraic units, for every fixed $q\geq2$, and we give an effective bound on the discriminant of such singular moduli. We give in an appendix an inseparability criterion for values of some classical modular forms, generalising an argument used in the proof of our first result.

Abstract:The $p$-group generation algorithm is used to verify that the Hilbert $3$-class field tower has length $3$ for certain imaginary quadratic fields $K$ with $3$-class group $\mathrm{Cl}_3(K) \cong [3,3]$. Our results provide the first examples of finite $p$-class towers of length $> 2$ for an odd prime $p$.

Abstract:We describe and give computational results of a procedure to compute the divisor class number and regulator of most purely cubic function fields of unit rank 2. Our implementation is an improvement to Pollard's Kangaroo method in infrastructures, using distribution results of class numbers as well as information on the congruence class of the divisor class number, and an adaptation that efficiently navigates these torus-shaped infrastructures. Moreover, this is the first time that an efficient "square-root" algorithm has been applied to the infrastructure of a global field of unit rank 2. With the exception of certain function fields defined by Picard curves, our examples are the largest known divisor class numbers and regulators ever computed for a function field of genus 3.
