Abstract:Quantum thermodynamics and quantum entanglement represent two pivotal quantum resource theories with significant relevance in quantum information science. Despite their importance, the intricate relationship between these two theories is still not fully understood. Here, we delve into the interplay between entanglement and thermodynamics, particularly in the context of local cooling processes. We introduce and develop the framework of Gibbs-preserving local operations and classical communication. Within this framework, we explore strategies enabling remote parties to effectively cool their local systems to the ground state. Our analysis is centered on scenarios where only a single copy of a quantum state is accessible, with the ideal performance defined by the highest possible fidelity to the ground state achievable under these constraints. We focus on systems with fully degenerate local Hamiltonians, where local cooling aligns with the extraction of local purity. In this context, we establish a powerful link between the efficiency of local purity extraction and the degree of entanglement present in the system, a concept we define as purity-entanglement complementarity. Moreover, we demonstrate that in many pertinent scenarios, the optimal performance can be precisely determined through semidefinite programming techniques. Our findings open doors to various practical applications, including techniques for entanglement detection and estimation. We demonstrate this by evaluating the amount of entanglement for a class of bound entangled states.

Abstract:Entanglement detection is one of the most conventional tasks in quantum information processing. While most experimental demonstrations of high-dimensional entanglement rely on fidelity-based witnesses, these are powerless to detect entanglement within a large class of entangled quantum states, the so-called unfaithful states. In this Letter, we introduce a highly flexible automated method to construct optimal tests for entanglement detection given a bipartite target state of arbitrary dimension, faithful or unfaithful, and a set of local measurement operators. By restricting the number or complexity of the considered measurement settings, our method outputs the most convenient protocol which can be implemented using a wide range of experimental techniques such as photons, superconducting qudits, cold atoms, or trapped ions. With an experimental quantum optics setup that can prepare and measure arbitrary high-dimensional mixed states, we implement some three-setting protocols generated by our method. These protocols allow us to experimentally certify two- and three-unfaithful entanglement in four-dimensional photonic states, some of which contain well above 50% of noise.

Abstract:We describe an entanglement purification protocol to generate maximally entangled states with high efficiencies from two-mode squeezed states or from mixed Gaussian continuous entangled states. The protocol relies on a local quantum non-demolition measurement of the total excitation number of several continuous variable entangled pairs. We propose an optical scheme to do this kind of measurement using cavity enhanced cross--Kerr interactions.

Abstract:High-quality long-distance entanglement is essential for both quantum communication and scalable quantum networks. Entanglement purification is to distill high-quality entanglement from low-quality entanglement in a noisy environment and it plays a key role in quantum repeaters. The previous significant entanglement purification experiments require two pairs of low-quality entangled states and were demonstrated in tabletop. Here we propose and report a high-efficiency and long-distance entanglement purification using only one pair of hyperentangled state. We also demonstrate its practical application in entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD). One pair of polarization spatial-mode hyperentanglement was distributed over 11 km multicore fiber (noisy channel). After purification, the fidelity of polarization entanglement arises from 0.771 to 0.887 and the effective key rate in entanglement-based QKD increases from 0 to 0.332. The values of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality of polarization entanglement arises from 1.829 to 2.128. Moreover, by using one pair of hyperentanglement and deterministic controlled-NOT gates, the total purification efficiency can be estimated as 6.6×10^{3} times than the experiment using two pairs of entangled states with spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources. Our results offer the potential to be implemented as part of a full quantum repeater and large-scale quantum network.

Abstract:We demonstrate that local transformations on a composite quantum system can be enhanced in the presence of certain entangled states. These extra states act much like catalysts in a chemical reaction: they allow otherwise impossible local transformations to be realized, without being consumed in any way. In particular, we show that this effect can considerably improve the efficiency of entanglement concentration procedures for finite states.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optimal entanglement distillation from two forms of two-qubit mixed states under local filtering operations according to the constructive method intruduced by [F. Verstraete , Phys. Rev. A 64, 010101(R) (2001)]. In principle, our setup can be easily applied to distilling entanglement from arbitrary two-qubit partially mixed states. We also test the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shinmony-Holt inequality for the distilled state from the first form of mixed state to show its "hidden nonlocality".

Abstract:The initialization of a quantum system into a certain state is a crucial aspect of quantum information science. While a variety of measurement strategies have been developed to characterize how well the system is initialized, for a given one, there is in general a trade-off between its efficiency and the accessible information of the quantum state. Conventional quantum state tomography can characterize unknown states while requiring exponentially expensive time-consuming postprocessing. Alternatively, recent theoretical breakthroughs show that quantum state verification provides a technique to quantify the prepared state with significantly fewer samples, especially for multipartite entangled states. In this Letter, we modify the original proposal to be robust to practical imperfections, and experimentally implement a scalable quantum state verification on two-qubit and four-qubit entangled states with nonadaptive local measurements. For all the tested states, the estimated infidelity is inversely proportional to the number of samples, which illustrates the power to characterize a quantum state with a small number of samples. Compared to the globally optimal strategy which requires nonlocal measurements, the efficiency in our experiment is only worse by a small constant factor (<2.5). We compare the performance difference between quantum state verification and quantum state tomography in an experiment to characterize a four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, and the results indicate the advantage of quantum state verification in both the achieved efficiency and precision.

Abstract:Starting from an arbitrary entangled stare of two separated qubits, one can produce a unique state which has the maximal possible entanglement of formation by carrying out local quantum operations and classical communication. We show that this maximal entanglement of formation and the fidelity of the unique state can be expressed as functions of the initial state analytically. Abstract:Entanglement is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics and holds great promise for enhancing metrology and communications. Much of the focus of quantum metrology so far has been on generating highly entangled quantum states that offer better sensitivity, per resource, than what can be achieved classically. However, to reach the ultimate limits in multi-parameter quantum metrology and quantum information processing tasks, collective measurements, which generate entanglement between multiple copies of the quantum state, are necessary. Here, we experimentally demonstrate theoretically optimal single- and two-copy collective measurements for simultaneously estimating two non-commuting qubit rotations. This allows us to implement quantum-enhanced sensing, for which the metrological gain persists for high levels of decoherence, and to draw fundamental insights about the interpretation of the uncertainty principle. We implement our optimal measurements on superconducting, trapped-ion and photonic systems, providing an indication of how future quantum-enhanced sensing networks may look.

Qubit Recycling in Entanglement Distillation

Abstract:Quantum entanglement distillation is a process to extract a small number of high-fidelity entanglement from a large number of low-fidelity ones, which in essence is to trade yield (or survival rate) for fidelity. Among existing distillation approaches, Gisin's local filtering protocol is commonly adopted in photonic quantum systems for distilling entangled photons in polarization basis. Yet, the performance of Gisin's filter is cursed by the same fundamental trade-off between fidelity and yield. To address this challenge, in this work, we propose a protocol to recycle the disposed photons and improve their fidelity by a designed (and optimized) local operator. The key parameters of the proposed protocol are calculated by solving a constrained optimization problem. In so doing, we achieve significantly higher yield of high-fidelity entanglement pairs. We further evaluate the performance of our designed protocol under two common configurations of Gisin's filter, namely full filter and partial filter. Compared with existing distillation protocols, the results demonstrate that our design achieves as much as 31.2% gain in yield under the same fidelity, while only incurring moderate system complexity in terms of invested hardware and extra signaling for synchronization.

Abstract:We discuss the relations between the violation of the CHSH Bell inequality for systems of two qubits on the one side and entanglement of formation, local filtering operations, and the entropy and purity on the other. We calculate the extremal Bell violations for a given amount of entanglement of formation and characterize the respective states, which turn out to have extremal properties also with respect to the entropy, purity and several entanglement monotones. The optimal local filtering operations leading to the maximal Bell violation for a given state are provided and the special role of the resulting Bell diagonal states in the context of Bell inequalities is discussed.

Abstract:To optimize the entanglement detection, we formulate the metrologically operational entanglement condition in quantum Fisher information by maximizing the QFI on the measurement orbit. Specifically, we consider two classes of typical local observables, i.e. the local orthonormal observables and symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures. Result shows that the symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures are superior to local orthonormal observables in entanglement detection, which in some sense hints the yet unconfirmed generally superiority of symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures in quantum information processing.

Experimental single-copy distillation of quantumness from higher-dimensional entanglement

Abstract:Entanglement is at the heart of quantum theory and is responsible for various quantum-enabling technologies. In practice, during its preparation, storage, and distribution to the intended recipients, this valuable quantum resource may suffer from noisy interactions that reduce its usefulness for the desired information-processing tasks. Conventional schemes of entanglement distillation aim to alleviate this problem by performing collective operations on multiple copies of these decohered states and sacrificing some of them to recover Bell pairs. However, for this scheme to work, the states to be distilled should already contain a large enough fraction of maximally entangled states before these collective operations. Not all entangled quantum states meet this premise. Here, by using the paradigmatic family of two-qutrit Werner states as an exemplifying example, we experimentally demonstrate how one may use single-copy local filtering operations to meet this requirement and to recover the quantumness hidden in these higher-dimensional states. Among others, our results provide the first proof-of-principle experimental certification of the Bell-nonlocal properties of these intriguing entangled states, the activation of their usefulness for quantum teleportation, dense coding, and an enhancement of their quantum steerability, and hence usefulness for certain discrimination tasks. Our theoretically established lower bounds on the steering robustness of these states, when they admit a symmetric quasiextension or a bosonic symmetric extension, and when they show hidden dense-codability may also be of independent interest.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement, resulting in correlations between subsystems that are stronger than any possible classical correlation, is one of the mysteries of quantum mechanics. Entanglement cannot be increased by any local operation, and for a sufficiently large many-body quantum system there exist infinitely many different entanglement classes, i. e., states that are not related by stochastic local operations and classical communications. On the other hand, the method of entanglement polytopes results in finitely many coarse-grained types of entanglement that can be detected by only measuring single-particle spectra. We find, however, that with high probability the local spectra lie in more than one polytope, hence providing only partial information about the entanglement type. To overcome this problem, we propose to additionally use so-called local filters, which are non-unitary local operations. We experimentally demonstrate the detection of entanglement polytopes in a four-qubit system. Using local filters we can distinguish the entanglement type of states with the same single particle spectra, but which belong to different polytopes.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement, a peculiar connection between particles, underpins powerful technologies such as quantum computing and secure communication. However, quantifying the minimum entanglement required to prepare quantum states and implement quantum processes remains a significant challenge. We develop an efficiently computable tool that reliably estimates the amount of entanglement needed for realizing arbitrary quantum processes respecting certain physical principles. Our tool applies to the entanglement required to prepare a broad range of quantum states in the asymptotic regime, surpassing previous methods' limitations. We also confirm that entanglement, once consumed to realize the considered class of quantum operations, cannot be fully recovered, even asymptotically. This irreversible behavior is evident for full-rank entangled states and practically relevant amplitude damping channels, even under quantum operations that completely preserve the positivity of partial transpose. We showcase our approach's power through examples such as estimating entanglement requirements for realizing bipartite dephasing SWAP channels and solving Hamiltonian simulations under thermal interaction, highlighting its advantages over existing techniques. Our work provides a practical toolkit for benchmarking entanglement requirements for generic states and quantum dynamics, paving the way for assessing and optimizing the performances of quantum technologies.

Optimal Fidelity-Aware Entanglement Distribution in Linear Quantum Networks

Abstract:We study the problem of entanglement distribution in terms of maximizing a utility function that captures the total fidelity of end-to-end entanglements in a two-link linear quantum network with a source, a repeater, and a destination. The nodes have several quantum memories, and the problem is how to coordinate entanglement purification in each of the links, and entanglement swapping across links, so as to achieve the goal above. We show that entanglement swapping (i.e, deciding on the pair of qubits from each link to perform swapping on) is equivalent to finding a max-weight matching on a bipartite graph. Further, entanglement purification (i.e, deciding which pairs of qubits in a link will undergo purification) is equivalent to finding a max-weight matching on a non-bipartite graph. We propose two polynomial algorithms, the Purify-then-Swap (PtS) and the Swap-then-Purify (StP) ones, where the decisions about purification and swapping are taken with different order. Numerical results show that PtS performs better than StP, and also that the omission of purification in StP gives substantial benefits.

Abstract:Quantum metrology utilizes nonclassical resources, such as entanglement or squeezed light, to realize sensors whose performance exceeds that afforded by classical-state systems. Environmental loss and noise, however, easily destroy nonclassical resources and, thus, nullify the performance advantages of most quantum-enhanced sensors. Quantum illumination (QI) is different. It is a robust entanglement-enhanced sensing scheme whose 6 dB performance advantage over a coherent-state sensor of the same average transmitted photon number survives the initial entanglement's eradication by loss and noise. Unfortunately, an implementation of the optimum quantum receiver that would reap QI's full performance advantage has remained elusive, owing to its having to deal with a huge number of very noisy optical modes. We show how sum-frequency generation (SFG) can be fruitfully applied to optimum multimode Gaussian-mixed-state discrimination. Applied to QI, our analysis and numerical evaluations demonstrate that our SFG receiver saturates QI's quantum Chernoff bound. Moreover, augmenting our SFG receiver with a feedforward (FF) mechanism pushes its performance to the Helstrom bound in the limit of low signal brightness. The FF-SFG receiver, thus, opens the door to optimum quantum-enhanced imaging, radar detection, state and channel tomography, and communication in practical Gaussian-state situations.

Abstract:Quantum networks are designed to transmit quantum bits (qubits) among quantum devices to enable new network resources for the applications. Entanglement distribution and entanglement swapping are fundamental procedures that are required in several network operations. However, they are probabilistic operations, which can lead to severe network performance degradation. This article investigates the engineering problem of resource allocation in quantum networks, considering factors like entanglement distribution probability, quantum memory characteristics, and fidelity. We model this as an optimization model to obtain an optimal solution. In particular, we formulate an integer linear programming (ILP) and develop a heuristic algorithm, aiming to minimize the number of required entangled qubit pairs (Bell pairs or EPR pairs) in any adjacent pair in the quantum network. Extensive simulations are performed to compare the performance of proposed ILP and heuristic. In all the cases, the heuristic produces a comparable solution to the optimal one. Simulation results ensure that the value of maximum utilized Bell pairs in a quantum network highly depends on the value of the probability of entangled pairs established, considering the time in the quantum memory besides the number of incoming requests.

Abstract:Quantum optimal control (QOC) schemes can be employed to enhance the sensitivity of quantum metrology (QM) protocols undergoing Markovian noise, which can limit their precision to a standard quantum limit (SQL)-like scaling. In this paper, we propose a QOC scheme for QM that leverages entanglement and optimized coupling interactions with an ancillary system to provide enhanced metrological performance under general Markovian dynamics. We perform a comparative analysis of our entanglement-enhanced scheme against the unentangled scheme conventionally employed in QOC-enabled QM for varying evolution times and decoherence levels, revealing that the entanglement-enhanced scheme enables significantly better noise performance, even when a noisy ancilla is employed. We further extend our investigation to time-inhomogeneous noise models, specifically focusing on a noisy frequency estimation scenario within a spin-boson bath, and evaluate the protocol's performance under completely dissipative and dephasing dynamics. Our findings indicate that, in certain situations, schemes employing coherent control of a single particle are severely limited. In such cases, employing the entanglement-enhanced scheme can provide improved performance.

Abstract:Entanglement-enhanced quantum metrology explores the utilization of quantum entanglement to enhance measurement precision. When particles in a probe are prepared into a quantum entangled state, they collectively accumulate information about the physical quantity to be measured, leading to an improvement in measurement precision beyond the standard quantum limit and approaching the Heisenberg limit. The rapid advancement of techniques for quantum manipulation and detection has enabled the generation, manipulation, and detection of multi-particle entangled states in synthetic quantum systems such as cold atoms and trapped ions. This article aims to review and illustrate the fundamental principles and experimental progresses that demonstrate multi-particle entanglement for quantum metrology, as well as discuss the potential applications of entanglement-enhanced quantum sensors.
