Abstract:We prove that the lamplighter group admits an injective Lipschitz map to any finitely generated metabelian group which is not virtually nilpotent. This implies that finitely generated metabelian groups satisfy the ``analytically thin/analytically thick'' dichotomy recently introduced by Hume, Mackay and Tessera.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the interplay between aspects of the geometry and algebra of three families of groups of the form B semidirect the integers Z, namely Lamplighter groups, solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups and lattices in SOL. In particular we examine what kind of maps are induced on B by quasi-isometries that coarsely permute cosets of the Z subgroup. By the results of Schwartz(1996) and Taback(2000) in the lattice in SOL and solvable Baumslag-Solitar cases respectively such quasi-isometries induce affine maps of B. We show that this is no longer true in the lamplighter case but the induced maps do share some features with affine maps.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce halo products as a natural generalisation of wreath products. They also encompass lampshuffler groups $\mathrm{FSym}(H) \rtimes H$ and lampcloner groups $\mathrm{FGL}(H) \rtimes H$, as well as many possible variations based for instance on braid groups, Thompson's groups, mapping class groups, automorphisms of free groups. We build a geometric framework that allows us to study the large-scale geometry of halo groups, providing refined invariants distinguishing various halo groups up to quasi-isometry.

Abstract:We show that a large family of groups is uniformly stable relative to unitary groups equipped with submultiplicative norms, such as the operator, Frobenius, and Schatten $p$-norms. These include lamplighters $\Gamma \wr \Lambda$ where $\Lambda$ is infinite and amenable, as well as several groups of dynamical origin such as the classical Thompson groups $F, F', T$ and $V$. We prove this by means of vanishing results in asymptotic cohomology, a theory introduced by the second author, Glebsky, Lubotzky and Monod, which is suitable for studying uniform stability. Along the way, we prove some foundational results in asymptotic cohomology, and use them to prove some hereditary features of Ulam stability. We further discuss metric approximation properties of such groups, taking values in unitary or symmetric groups.

Abstract:For any nontrivial abelian group $\mathbb{X}$ we construct a reversible (bireversible in case the order of $\mathbb{X}$ is odd) automaton such that its set of states and alphabet are identified with $\mathbb{X}$, transition and output functions are defined via the left and the right regular actions correspondingly and its group splits into the restricted wreath product $\mathbb{X} \wr \mathbb{Z}$, i.e. is a lamplighter group.

Abstract:We prove that the lamplighter group admits strongly aperiodic SFTs, has undecidable tiling problem, and the entropies of its SFTs are exactly the upper semicomputable nonnegative real numbers, and some other results. These results follow from two relatively general simulation theorems, which show that for a large class of effective subshifts on the sea-level subgroup, their induction to the lamplighter group is sofic; and the pullback of every effective Cantor system on the integers admits an SFT cover. We exhibit a concrete strongly aperiodic set with $1488$ tetrahedra. We show that metabelian Baumslag-Solitar groups are intersimulable with lamplighter groups, and thus we obtain the same characterization for their entropies.

Abstract:For any finite group $A$ and any finitely generated group $B$, we prove that the corresponding lamplighter group $A\wr B$ admits a standard generating set with unbounded depth, and that if $B$ is abelian then the above is true for every standard generating set. This generalizes the case where $B=\mathbb{Z}$ together with its cyclic generator due to Cleary and Taback. When $B=H*K$ is the free product of two finite groups $H$ and $K$, we characterize which standard generators of the associated lamplighter group have unbounded depth in terms of a geometrical constant related to the Cayley graphs of $H$ and $K$. In particular, we find differences with the one-dimensional case: the lamplighter group over the free product of two sufficiently large finite cyclic groups has uniformly bounded depth with respect to some standard generating set.

Generalizing $β$- and $λ$-maps

Abstract:We generalize the notions of $\beta$- and $\lambda$-maps to general selections of sublocales, obtaining different classes of localic maps. These new classes of maps are used to characterize almost normality, extremal disconnectedness, $F$-frames, $Oz$-frames, among others types of locales, in a manner akin to the characterization of normal locales via $\beta$-maps. As a byproduct we obtain a characterization of localic maps that preserve the completely below relation (that is, the right adjoints of assertive frame homomorphisms).

Abstract:Generalizing the idea of self-similar groups defined by Mealy automata, we itroduce the notion of a self-similar automaton and a self-similar group over a changing alphabet. We show that every finitely generated residually-finite group is self-similar over an arbitrary unbounded changing alphabet. We construct some naturally defined self-similar automaton representations over an unbounded changing alphabet for any lamplighter group $K\wr \mathbb{Z}$ with an arbitrary finitely generated (finite or infinite) abelian group $K$.

Abstract:<p>This work is motivated by the problem of finding locally compact group topologies for piecewise full groups (a.k.a. topological full groups). We determine that any piecewise full group that is locally compact in the compact‐open topology on the group of self‐homeomorphisms of the Cantor set must be uniformly discrete, in a precise sense that we introduce here. Uniformly discrete groups of self‐homeomorphisms of the Cantor set are in particular countable, locally finite, residually finite and discrete in the compact‐open topology. The resulting piecewise full groups form a subclass of the ample groups introduced by Krieger. We determine the structure of these groups by means of their Bratteli diagrams and associated dimension ranges ( <math>K0</math> groups). We show through an example that not all uniformly discrete piecewise full groups are subgroups of the 'obvious' ones, namely piecewise full groups of finite groups.</p>

Lamps in slim rectangular planar semimodular lattices

Abstract:A planar (upper) semimodular lattice $L$ is slim if the five-element nondistributive modular lattice $M_3$ does not occur among its sublattices. (Planar lattices are finite by definition.) Slim rectangular lattices as particular slim planar semimodular lattices were defined by G. Grätzer and E. Knapp in 2007. In 2009, they also proved that the congruence lattices of slim planar semimodular lattices with at least three elements are the same as those of slim rectangular lattices. In order to provide an effective tool for studying these congruence lattices, we introduce the concept of lamps of slim rectangular lattices and prove several of their properties. Lamps and several tools based on them allow us to prove in a new and easy way that the congruence lattices of slim planar semimodular lattices satisfy the two previously known properties. Also, we use lamps to prove that these congruence lattices satisfy four new properties including the two-pendant four-crown property and the forbidden marriage property.

Abstract:Let Gamma be a group generated by two positive multi-twists. We give some sufficient conditions for Gamma to be free or have no `unexpectedly reducible' elements. For a group Gamma generated by two Dehn twists, we classify the elements in Gamma which are multi-twists. As a consequence we are able to list all the lantern-like relations in the mapping class groups. We classify groups generated by powers of two Dehn twists which are free, or have no "unexpectedly reducible" elements. In the end we pose similar problems for groups generated by powers of n > 2 twists and give a partial result.

Abstract:Semilinear maps are a generalization of linear maps between vector spaces where we allow the scalar action to be twisted by a ring homomorphism such as complex conjugation. In particular, this generalization unifies the concepts of linear and conjugate-linear maps. We implement this generalization in Lean's mathlib library, along with a number of important results in functional analysis which previously were impossible to formalize properly. Specifically, we prove the Fréchet–Riesz representation theorem and the spectral theorem for compact self-adjoint operators generically over real and complex Hilbert spaces, additionally developing the Fourier theory needed to state and prove Parseval's identity. We also show that semilinear maps have applications beyond functional analysis by formalizing the one-dimensional case of a theorem of Dieudonné and Manin that classifies the isocrystals over an algebraically closed field with positive characteristic.

Finding and Combining Indicable Subgroups of Big Mapping Class Groups

Abstract:We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, right-angled Artin groups, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\text{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\text{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\text{Map}(S')$ into $\text{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

The Lamplighter groups have infinite weak cop number

Abstract:The weak-cop number of a graph, a variation of the cop number, is an invariant suitable for infinite graphs and is a quasi-isometric invariant. While for any $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+\cup\{\infty\}$ there exist locally finite infinite graphs with weak-cop number $m$, it is an open question whether there exists locally finite vertex transitive graphs whose weak-cop number is different than $1$ and $\infty$. We test this question on Cayley graphs of wreath products, these are objects known for their exotic geometries. We prove that Cayley graphs of wreath products of nontrivial groups by infinite groups have infinite weak-cop number. The result is proved by defining a new pursuit and evasion game and proving the existence of strategies for the evader. We also include a short argument that Cayley graphs of Thompson's group $F$ have infinite weak cop number.

Non-singular word maps for linear groups

Abstract:We study the word image of words with constants in ${\rm GL}(V)$ and show that it is large provided the word satisfies some natural conditions on its length and its critical constants. There are various consequences: We prove that for every $l \geq 1$, there are only finitely many pairs $(n,q)$ such that the length of the shortest non-singular mixed identity ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$ is bounded by $l$. We generalize the Hull--Osin dichotomy for highly transitive permutation groups to linear groups over finite fields. Finally, we show that the rank limit of ${\rm GL}_n(q)$ for $q$ fixed and $n \to \infty$ is mixed identity free.

Abstract:We consider the two generalizations of lamplighter groups: automata groups generated by Cayley machine and cross-wired lamplighter groups. For a finite step two nilpotent group with central squares, we study its associated Cayley machine and give a presentation of the corresponding automata group. We show the automata group is a cross-wired lamplighter group and does not embed in the wreath product of a finite group with a torsion free group. For a subfamily of such finite step two nilpotent groups, we prove that their associated automata groups are linear.
Regular maps with primitive automorphism groups

Abstract:We classify the regular maps $\mathcal M$ which have automorphism groups $G$ acting faithfully and primitively on their vertices. As a permutation group $G$ must be of almost simple or affine type, with dihedral point stabilisers. We show that all such almost simple groups, namely all but a few groups ${\rm PSL}_2(q)$, ${\rm PGL}_2(q)$ and ${\rm Sz}(q)$, arise from regular maps, which are always non-orientable. In the affine case, the maps $\mathcal M$ occur in orientable and non-orientable Petrie dual pairs. We give the number of maps associated with each group, together with their genus and extended type. Some of this builds on earlier work of the first author on generalised Paley maps, and on recent work of Jajcay, Li, \vSirá\vn and Wang on maps with quasiprimitive automorphism groups. There are tables of data for the maps in appendices to this paper.
