Abstract:Growing robots based on the eversion principle are known for their ability to extend rapidly, from within, along their longitudinal axis, and, in doing so, reach deep into hitherto inaccessible, remote spaces. Despite many advantages, eversion robots also present significant challenges, one of which is maintaining sensory payload at the tip without restricting the eversion process. A variety of tip mechanisms has been proposed by the robotics community, among them rounded caps of relatively complex construction that are not always compatible with functional hardware, such as sensors or navigation pouches, integrated with the main eversion structure. Moreover, many tip designs incorporate rigid materials, reducing the robot's flexibility and consequent ability to navigate through narrow openings. Here, we address these shortcomings and propose a design to overcome them: a soft, entirely fabric based, cylindrical cap that can easily be slipped onto the tip of eversion robots. Having created a series of caps of different sizes and materials, an experimental study was conducted to evaluate our new design in terms of four key aspects: eversion robot made from multiple layers of everting material, solid objects protruding from the eversion robot, squeezability, and navigability. In all scenarios, we can show that our soft, flexible cap is robust in its ability to maintain its position and is capable of transporting payloads such as a camera across long distances.

A Multi-Segment, Soft Growing Robot with Selective Steering

Abstract:Everting, soft growing vine robots benefit from reduced friction with their environment, which allows them to navigate challenging terrain. Vine robots can use air pouches attached to their sides for lateral steering. However, when all pouches are serially connected, the whole robot can only perform one constant curvature in free space. It must contact the environment to navigate through obstacles along paths with multiple turns. This work presents a multi-segment vine robot that can navigate complex paths without interacting with its environment. This is achieved by a new steering method that selectively actuates each single pouch at the tip, providing high degrees of freedom with few control inputs. A small magnetic valve connects each pouch to a pressure supply line. A motorized tip mount uses an interlocking mechanism and motorized rollers on the outer material of the vine robot. As each valve passes through the tip mount, a permanent magnet inside the tip mount opens the valve so the corresponding pouch is connected to the pressure supply line at the same moment. Novel cylindrical pneumatic artificial muscles (cPAMs) are integrated into the vine robot and inflate to a cylindrical shape for improved bending characteristics compared to other state-of-the-art vine robots. The motorized tip mount controls a continuous eversion speed and enables controlled retraction. A final prototype was able to repeatably grow into different shapes and hold these shapes. We predict the path using a model that assumes a piecewise constant curvature along the outside of the multi-segment vine robot. The proposed multi-segment steering method can be extended to other soft continuum robot designs.

Abstract:Tip-extending soft robots, taking flexible film or rubber as body material and fluid pressure as input power, exhibit excellent advantages in constrained and cluttered environments for detection and manipulation. However, existing soft continuum robots are of great challenges in achieving multiple, mutually independent, and on-demand active steering over a long distance without precise steering control. In this paper, we introduce a vine-like soft robot made up of a pressurized thin-walled vessel integrated with the high controllability of a control system with multiple degrees of freedom in three dimensions. Moreover, steering and kinematic models to relate the steering angle and robot length to the location of the robot tip are provided, and a dynamic finite element model for analyzing the motion of the spatial consecutive steering is established. We demonstrate the abilities of disinfection of the robot moving in a long and tortuous pipeline and detection in a multi-obstacle constrained environment. It is established that the robot exhibits great advantages in active consecutive steering over a long distance, high controllability in completing more complex path planning, and significant ability of carrying operational tools for ventilation pipeline disinfection and multi-obstacle detection. The bionic soft robot shows great promise for use in environment sensing, target detecting, and equipment servicing.

Abstract:Abstract Dielectric elastomer (DE)-based soft actuators have been actively studied in the field of soft actuation technology based on their unique properties such as high energy density, large actuation strain, inherent compliance, lightweight, silent operation, and faster response when compared with other actuators. A dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) bending module based on dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures (DEMES) is proposed by adopting a bi-material system consisting of a DE membrane attached to a flexible acrylic frame with a hollow in the middle. Its bending performance can be satisfactorily predicted analytically and numerically, which helps design the DEA bending module better. For a typical DEA bending module with a DE membrane of 20 mm × 20 mm (width and length) and an acrylic frame with a hollow of 4 mm × 60 mm (width and length), 30.23° actuation angle and 53.96° actuation angle can be achieved with a single module and two serially assembled modules, respectively, under an 8 kV excitation voltage. The hollow design on the acrylic frame avoids the contact problem between the electrode-coated DE layer and the stiff frame sheet. A soft rotatable gripper and a biomimetic crawling robot are designed and fabricated for demonstration.

Abstract:The climbing microrobots have attracted growing attention due to their promising applications in exploration and monitoring of complex, unstructured environments. Soft climbing microrobots based on muscle-like actuators could offer excellent flexibility, adaptability, and mechanical robustness. Despite the remarkable progress in this area, the development of soft microrobots capable of climbing on flat/curved surfaces and transitioning between two different surfaces remains elusive, especially in open spaces. In this study, we address these challenges by developing voltage-driven soft small-scale actuators with customized 3D configurations and active stiffness adjusting. Combination of programmed strain distributions in liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and buckling-driven 3D assembly, guided by mechanics modeling, allows for voltage-driven, complex 3D-to-3D shape morphing (bending angle > 200°) at millimeter scales (from 1 to 10 mm), which is unachievable previously. These soft actuators enable development of morphable electroadhesive footpads that can conform to different curved surfaces and stiffness-variable smart joints that allow different locomotion gaits in a single microrobot. By integrating such morphable footpads and smart joints with a deformable body, we report a multigait, soft microrobot (length from 6 to 90 mm, and mass from 0.2 to 3 g) capable of climbing on surfaces with diverse shapes (e.g., flat plane, cylinder, wavy surface, wedge-shaped groove, and sphere) and transitioning between two distinct surfaces. We demonstrate that the microrobot could navigate from one surface to another, recording two corresponding ceilings when carrying an integrated microcamera. The developed soft microrobot can also flip over a barrier, survive extreme compression, and climb bamboo and leaf.

Abstract:Soft robots hold the potential for use in disaster sites where it is difficult to predict the external environment and the manipulation of irregularly shaped heavy objects is required. However, existing soft robots possess the low load capacity. Therefore, we propose a vine-like, power soft gripper that grasps an object by wrapping it, and we fabricated a prototype. The gripper is based on Euler's belt theory, the load capacity increases with the wrap angle and it is demonstrated by load capacity measurements. A grasping experiment demonstrated that the gripper could grasp objects of various shapes. This gripper wraps around an object using the restoring force exerted by the constant-force spring. Hence, the gripper cannot lift heavy objects that tend to rotate during lifting. However, it was confirmed that a twin-gripper with opposite helical directions could grasp such objects. It was also confirmed that twin-gripper could grasp an object weighing 1660 N although its two constant-force springs possess a small load of 43 N. This indicates that the grasping load force surpassed that generated by the spring coiling force. Finally, the gripper was attached to a construction machine robot, and a pick-and-place demonstration was conducted.

High-curvature, high-force, vine robot for inspection

Abstract:Robot performance has advanced considerably both in and out of the factory, however in tightly constrained, unknown environments such as inside a jet engine or the human heart, current robots are less adept. In such cases where a borescope or endoscope can't reach, disassembly or surgery are costly. One promising inspection device inspired by plant growth are "vine robots" that can navigate cluttered environments by extending from their tip. Yet, these vine robots are currently limited in their ability to simultaneously steer into tight curvatures and apply substantial forces to the environment. Here, we propose a plant-inspired method of steering by asymmetrically lengthening one side of the vine robot to enable high curvature and large force application. Our key development is the introduction of an extremely anisotropic, composite, wrinkled film with elastic moduli 400x different in orthogonal directions. The film is used as the vine robot body, oriented such that it can stretch over 120% axially, but only 3% circumferentially. With the addition of controlled layer jamming, this film enables a steering method inspired by plants in which the circumference of the robot is inextensible, but the sides can stretch to allow turns. This steering method and body pressure do not work against each other, allowing the robot to exhibit higher forces and tighter curvatures than previous vine robot architectures. This work advances the abilities of vine robots--and robots more generally--to not only access tightly constrained environments, but perform useful work once accessed.

Hydraulic Volumetric Soft Everting Vine Robot Steering Mechanism for Underwater Exploration

Abstract:Despite a significant proportion of the Earth being covered in water, exploration of what lies below has been limited due to the challenges and difficulties inherent in the process. Current state of the art robots such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are bulky, rigid and unable to conform to their environment. Soft robotics offers solutions to this issue. Fluid-actuated eversion or growing robots, in particular, are a good example. While current eversion robots have found many applications on land, their inherent properties make them particularly well suited to underwater environments. An important factor when considering underwater eversion robots is the establishment of a suitable steering mechanism that can enable the robot to change direction as required. This project proposes a design for an eversion robot that is capable of steering while underwater, through the use of bending pouches, a design commonly seen in the literature on land-based eversion robots. These bending pouches contract to enable directional change. Similar to their land-based counterparts, the underwater eversion robot uses the same fluid in the medium it operates in to achieve extension and bending but also to additionally aid in neutral buoyancy. The actuation method of bending pouches meant that robots needed to fully extend before steering was possible. Three robots, with the same design and dimensions were constructed from polyethylene tubes and tested. Our research shows that although the soft eversion robot design in this paper was not capable of consistently generating the same amounts of bending for the inflation volume, it still achieved suitable bending at a range of inflation volumes and was observed to bend to a maximum angle of 68 degrees at 2000 ml, which is in line with the bending angles reported for land-based eversion robots in the literature.

Passive Shape Locking for Multi-Bend Growing Inflated Beam Robots

Abstract:Shape change enables new capabilities for robots. One class of robots capable of dramatic shape change is soft growing "vine" robots. These robots usually feature global actuation methods for bending that limit them to simple, constant-curvature shapes. Achieving more complex "multi-bend" configurations has also been explored but requires choosing the desired configuration ahead of time, exploiting contact with the environment to maintain previous bends, or using pneumatic actuation for shape locking. In this paper, we present a novel design that enables passive, on-demand shape locking. Our design leverages a passive tip mount to apply hook-and-loop fasteners that hold bends without any pneumatic or electrical input. We characterize the robot's kinematics and ability to hold locked bends. We also experimentally evaluate the effect of hook-and-loop fasteners on beam and joint stiffness. Finally, we demonstrate our proof-of-concept prototype in 2D. Our passive shape locking design is a step towards easily reconfigurable robots that are lightweight, low-cost, and low-power.

Abstract:Robots that share activity spaces or physically interact with humans typically benefit from appropriate payload capacity, extensible workspace, low weight, safety, and space efficiency. The soft origami design and mechanism can meet many of these beneficial factors; however, achieving a high payload capacity remains challenging. In this letter, we developed a soft origami arm module with high variable stiffness (x300) and spatial efficiency (compressed x3.1). The buckling of facets into a cylindrical tube followed by its pressurization enables the arm to be highly stiffened. High-pressure capacity was obtained via the sewing-heat press fabrication process. We used a pneumatic pressuretendon pair and utilized the frictional force between origami and tendon to prevent unintentional gravity-induced deformation while deploying. An analytical model was developed and compared to the experimental results. With our modular design, we could easily build functional robotic structures. Two robotic demonstrations were performed to examine the expandability of the modules. A variable-length robotic arm that mimics a human arm was built to manipulate typical objects. Additionally, a soft rover, which could carry 14 kg of weight and change its volume 29 times for improved spatial efficiency, was developed. This research suggests a new design methodology for practical soft robotic systems.

SoftSnap: Rapid Prototyping of Untethered Soft Robots Using Snap-Together Modules

Abstract:Soft robots offer adaptability and safe interaction with complex environments. Rapid prototyping kits that allow soft robots to be assembled easily will allow different geometries to be explored quickly to suit different environments or to mimic the motion of biological organisms. We introduce SoftSnap modules: snap-together components that enable the rapid assembly of a class of untethered soft robots. Each SoftSnap module includes embedded computation, motor-driven string actuation, and a flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) printed structure capable of deforming into various shapes based on the string configuration. These modules can be easily connected with other SoftSnap modules or customizable connectors. We demonstrate the versatility of the SoftSnap system through four configurations: a starfish-like robot, a brittle star robot, a snake robot, a 3D gripper, and a ring-shaped robot. These configurations highlight the ease of assembly, adaptability, and functional diversity of the SoftSnap modules. The SoftSnap modular system offers a scalable, snap-together approach to simplifying soft robot prototyping, making it easier for researchers to explore untethered soft robotic systems rapidly.

Configuration and Fabrication of Preformed Vine Robots

Abstract:Vine robots are a class of soft continuum robots that grow via tip eversion, allowing them to move their tip without relying on reaction forces from the environment. Constructed from compliant materials such as fabric and thin, flexible plastic, these robots are able to grow many times their original length with the use of fluidic pressure. They can be mechanically programmed/preformed to follow a desired path during growth by changing the structure of their body prior to deployment. We present a model for fabricating preformed vine robots with discrete bends. We apply this model across combinations of three fabrication methods and two materials. One fabrication method, taping folds into the robot body, is from the literature. The other two methods, welding folds and connecting fasteners embedded in the robot body, are novel. Measurements show the ability of the resulting vine robots to follow a desired path and show that fabrication method has a significant impact. Results include bend angles with as little as 0.12 degrees of error, and segment lengths with as low as 0.36 mm of error. The required growth pressure and average growth speed of these preformed vine robots ranged from 11.5 to 23.7kPA and 3.75 to 10 cm/s, respectively. These results validate the use of preformed vine robots for deployment along known paths, and serve as a guide for choosing a fabrication method and material combination based on the specific needs of the task.

Abstract:Plant cells expand and elongate. Their cumulative actuation defines organ morphing. Inspired by this modular transformability, this study proposes a modular concept for growing robots that will be able to grow by adding at their tip Transformable Modules (TMs). We provide a two-module implementation to evaluate the concept viability. We designed and characterized Shape-Retention Bellows (SRBs) that constitute the TM and are used to maintain the shape once the extension force is relaxed. We demonstrate module radial expansion and axial elongation in a straight and bent configuration (up to ∼4◦). This is the first concept of growing robots to enact the robot’s modularity and Transferability for future deployment in distributed growing systems capable of acting in various scenarios.

Abstract:Soft robots, devices with deformable bodies and powered by soft actuators, may fill a hitherto unexplored niche in outer space. All space-bound payloads are heavily limited in terms of mass and volume, due to the cost of launch and the size of spacecraft. Being constructed from stretchable materials allows many possibilities for compacting soft robots for launch and later deploying into a much larger volume, through folding, rolling, and inflation. This morphability can also be beneficial for adapting to operation in different environments, providing versatility, and robustness. To be truly soft, a robot must be powered by soft actuators. Dielectric elastomer transducers (DETs) offer many advantages as artificial muscles. They are lightweight, have a high work density, and are capable of artificial proprioception. Taking inspiration from nature, in particular the starfish podia, we present here bio-inspired inflatable DET actuators powering low-mass robots capable of performing complex motion that can be compacted to a fraction of their operating size.

Abstract:There is a surge of research interest in the field of tensegrity robotics. Robots developed under this paradigm provide many advantages and have distinguishing features in terms of structural compliance, dexterity, safety, and weight reduction. This paper proposes a new robotic mechanism based on tensegrity ('tension-integrity') robots and reconfigurable modular robots. The specific actuation schemes for this tensegrity robot with multiple degrees of freedom are presented. This article describes an easy-to-assemble 350 mm tensegrity based robot prototype by stacking a series of rigid struts linked with tensegrity joints that have no direct rigid contact with each other. The functionality of the proposed robot is validated by the experimental results by integrating the polyhedral parallel structure as its skeleton and series of tensegrity joints. The proposed manipulator is capable of reaching bending angles up to 76 degrees. An adaptive cable driven underactuated robotic gripper is designed and attached to the tensegrity manipulator for grasping objects in different shapes, weights, and sizes.

Abstract:The International Journal of Robotics Research, Ahead of Print. Nowadays, there is a growing demand for versatile robotic grippers that facilitate adaptive grasping across a range of objects, characterized by diverse attributes such as shapes, sizes, and mechanical properties. This research introduces a new soft gripper, denoted as ROSE (ROtation-based Squeezing GrippEr), dedicated to the torsional buckling phenomenon to achieve its grasping capability. The inherent gripping pattern, formed through a single rotational actuation, enables ROSE to dynamically accommodate various objects (relatively smaller than the diameter of ROSE), even in challenging environments like an oil container, without a complicated controller. Experimental tests demonstrate that ROSE exhibits substantial gripping force, reaching up to more than 300 N in the specific setup, and a remarkable payload-to-weight ratio. Especially, ROSE can maintain mechanical integrity through long-term open-close operation cycles in a specific condition. In this paper, we also introduce non-linear simulations for the elaboration of behaviors of ROSE concerning different morphologies, encompassing geometry configurations and material properties. The findings highlight a significant correlation between morphological features and grasping performance, leading to the refinement of a dependable version of ROSE. This refined version was subsequently assessed through experimental trials in crop harvesting tasks, where ROSE demonstrated high success rates in picking both individual and clustered crops, regardless of their soft or stiff characteristics. Design of Soft, Modular Appendages for a Bio-inspired Multi-Legged Terrestrial Robot

Abstract:Soft robots have the ability to adapt to their environment, which makes them suitable for use in disaster areas and agricultural fields, where their mobility is constrained by complex terrain. One of the main challenges in developing soft terrestrial robots is that the robot must be soft enough to adapt to its environment, but also rigid enough to exert the required force on the ground to locomote. In this paper, we report a pneumatically driven, soft modular appendage made of silicone for a terrestrial robot capable of generating specific mechanical movement to locomote and transport loads in the desired direction. This two-segmented soft appendage uses actuation in between the joint and the lower segment of the appendage to ensure adequate rigidity to exert the required force to locomote. A prototype of a soft-rigid-bodied tethered physical robot was developed and two sets of experiments were carried out in both air and underwater environments to assess its performance. The experimental results address the effectiveness of the soft appendage to generate adequate force to navigate through various environments and our design method offers a simple, low-cost, and efficient way to develop terradynamically capable soft appendages that can be used in a variety of locomotion applications.

Abstract:Soft robots show significant potential for use in search and rescue, human-robot interaction, and other emerging fields due to their ability to easily conform, deform, and interact with their environment. However, precise control of these soft robots is still being explored. In this letter, we investigate a potential solution to address the limitations of precise control for soft robots. We experimentally verify the accuracy of a general analytical formulation of a continuous kinematic model using a custom soft growing manipulator. Next, we provide an experimental verification of its inverse kinematic model. With this precise model, most soft continuum kinematic models, whether tendon-driven or with a payload, can be represented. Our robot fits the proposed generalized curvature function for $n=2$, with an average error relative to the robot's overall length of 5.01, based on four robot lengths of 0.5 m, 0.8 m, 1.0 m, and 1.2 m. The inverse kinematic model was verified using three positions, resulting in errors of 2.91, 7.91, and 2.14. We also showed that the shape can be recovered based on using the tip position in the inverse kinematic model. Our future work will involve verifying this model in 3D space and incorporating it into a model-based feedback loop controller to enhance position control accuracy.

Hybrid Continuum-Eversion Robot: Precise Navigation and Decontamination in Nuclear Environments using Vine Robot

Abstract:Soft growing vine robots show great potential for navigation and decontamination tasks in the nuclear industry. This paper introduces a novel hybrid continuum-eversion robot designed to address certain challenges in relation to navigating and operating within pipe networks and enclosed remote vessels. The hybrid robot combines the flexibility of a soft eversion robot with the precision of a continuum robot at its tip, allowing for controlled steering and movement in hard to access and/or complex environments. The design enables the delivery of sensors, liquids, and aerosols to remote areas, supporting remote decontamination activities. This paper outlines the design and construction of the robot and the methods by which it achieves selective steering. We also include a comprehensive review of current related work in eversion robotics, as well as other steering devices and actuators currently under research, which underpin this novel active steering approach. This is followed by an experimental evaluation that demonstrates the robot's real-world capabilities in delivering liquids and aerosols to remote locations. The experiments reveal successful outcomes, with over 95% success in precision spraying tests. The paper concludes by discussing future work alongside limitations in the current design, ultimately showcasing its potential as a solution for remote decontamination operations in the nuclear industry.
