Abstract:We study the set $\mathcal{L}_{F}$ of all $F$-vector spaces $L(P)$ where $P$ is monic and splits over $F$ and $L(Q)$ denotes the set of linear recurrence sequences over $F$ with characteristic polynomial $Q$. We show that $\mathcal{L}_{F}$ can be endowed with two structures of graded commutative semiring. This study allows us to obtain, in compact forms, the polynomial $P,Q\in F[X]$ such that $L(P)=\prod_{i=1}^{m}L(P_{i})$ and $L(Q)=L(P_{1})\ast\cdots\ast L(P_{m})$, where $P_{1}, \ldots, P_{m}$ are any monic polynomials over $F$.

Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:Let $(F_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be the Fibonacci sequence given by $F_{n+2}=F_{n+1}+F_n$, for $n\geq 0$, where $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. There are several interesting identities involving this sequence such as $F_n^2+F_{n+1}^2=F_{2n+1}$, for all $n\geq 0$. Inspired by this naive identity, in 2012, Chaves, Marques and Togbé proved that if $(G_m)_m$ is a linear recurrence sequence (under weak assumptions) and $G_n^s+\cdots +G_{n+k}^s\in (G_m)_m$, for infinitely many positive integers $n$, then $s$ is bounded by an effectively computable constant depending only on $k$ and the parameters of $G_m$. In this paper, we generalize this result, proving, in particular, that if $(G_m)_m$ and $ (H_m)_m$ are linear recurrence sequences (also under weak assumptions), $R(z) \in \mathbb{C}[z]$, and $ \epsilon_0R(G_n)+\epsilon_1R(G_{n+1})+\cdots +\epsilon_{k-1}R(G_{n+k-1})+R(G_{n+k})$ belongs to $(H_m)_m$, for infinitely many positive integers $n$, then the degree of $R(z)$ is bounded by an effectively computable constant depending only on the upper and lower bounds of the $\epsilon_i$'s and the parameters of $G_m$ (but surprisingly not on $k$).

Abstract:We derive several identities for arbitrary homogeneous second order recurrence sequences with constant coefficients. The results are then applied to present a unified study of six well known integer sequences, namely the Fibonacci sequence, the sequence of Lucas numbers, the Jacobsthal sequence, the Jacobsthal-Lucas sequence, the Pell sequence and the Pell-Lucas sequence.

Abstract:Let $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a non-degenerate linear recurrence sequence with order at least two defined over a function field and $\mathcal{O}_S^*$ be the set of $S$-units. In this paper, we use a result of Brownawell and Masser to prove effective results related to the Diophantine equations concerning linear recurrence sequences and $S$-units. In particular, we provide a finiteness result for the solutions of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_1} + \cdots + U_{n_r} \in \mathcal{O}_S^*$ in nonnegative integers $n_1, \ldots, n_r$. Furthermore, we study the finiteness result of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_1}^{(1)}+ U_{n_2}^{(2)}+\cdots+U_{n_k}^{(k)} = 0$ in $(n_1, \ldots, n_k)\in \N^k$, where $U_n^{(1)}, \ldots, U_n^{(k)}$ are simple linear recurrence sequences in the function field.

Linear Congruences in several variables with congruence restrictions

Abstract:In this article, we consider systems of linear congruences in several variables and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions as well as explicit expressions for the number of solutions subject to certain restriction conditions. These results are in terms of Ramanujan sums and generalize the results of Lehmer \cite{DNL13} and Bibak et al. \cite{BBVRL17}. These results have analogues over $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ where the proofs are similar, once notions such as Ramanujan sums are defined in this set-up. We use the recent description of Ramanujan sums over function fields as developed by Zhiyong Zheng \cite{ZZ18}. This is discussed in the last section. We illustrate the formulae obtained for the number of solutions through some examples. Over the integers, such problems have a rich history, some of which seem to have been forgotten - a number of papers written on the topic re-prove known results. The present authors also became aware of some of these old articles only while writing the present article and hence, we recall very briefly some of the old work by H. J. S. Smith, Rademacher, Brauer, Butson and Stewart, Ramanathan, McCarthy, and Spilker \cite{AB26, BS55, PJM76, HR25, KGR44, HJSS61, JS96}.

Abstract:The enumeration of polymer coverings on two-dimensional rectangular lattices is considered as "intractable". We prove that the number of coverings of $s$ polymer satisfies a simple recurrence relation $ \sum_{i=0}^{2s} (-1)^i \binom{2s}{i} a_{n-i, m-i} = 2^s {(2s)!} / {s!} $ on a $n \times m$ rectangular lattice with open boundary conditions in both directions.

Abstract:Let F-q be the finite field of order q and f (x) be an irreducible polynomial of degree n over F-q. For a positive divisor n(1) of n, define the n(1)-traces of f (x) to be Tr(alpha; n(1)) = alpha+alpha(q) +...+alpha(qn1-1) where alpha's are the roots of f (x). Let N-q*(n; n(1)) denote the number of monic irreducible polynomials of degree n over F-q with nozero n(1)-traces. Ruskey, Miers and Sawada have found the formula for N-q*(n; n). Based on the properties of linearized polynomials, we obtain the formula for N-q*(n; n(1)) in the general case, including a new proof to the result by Ruskey, Miers and Sawada.

On the Recursive Behaviour of the Number of Irreducible Polynomials with Certain Properties over Finite Fields

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the field with $q$ elements and of characteristic $p$. For $a\in\mathbb{F}_p$ consider the set \begin{equation*} S_a(n)=\{f\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]\mid\operatorname{deg}(f)=n,~f\text{ irreducible, monic and} \operatorname{Tr}(f)=a\}. \end{equation*} In a recent paper, Robert Granger proved for $q=2$ and $n\ge 2$ that $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|= 0$ if $2\nmid n$ and $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|=|S_1(n/2)|$ if $2\mid n$. We will prove a generalization of this result for all finite fields. This is possible due to an observation about the size of certain subsets of monic irreducible polynomials arising in the context of a group action of subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on monic polynomials. Additionally, it enables us to apply these methods to prove two further results that are very similar in nature.

Abstract:We study a) the limit of the ratio of two consecutive terms in such a sequence and b) the limit of the ratio of two terms in which one has a lag equal to 2. In the general case limit a) does not exist but we have two limiting values depending on the parity of the index. And these limits depend on the initial conditions. Limit b) exists and does not depend on the the initial conditions. Finally we seek the set of initial conditions for which this limit exists (that is, the two limiting values coincide) and obtain this limit.
Linear Partial Differential Equations in Module of Copolynomials of Several Variables over a Commutative Ring

Abstract:We study the copolynomials of $n$ variables, i.e. $K$-linear mappings from the ring of polynomials $K[x_1,...,x_n]$ into the commutative ring $K$. We prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for a linear differential equation of infinite order which can be considered as an algebraic version of the classical Malgrange-Ehrenpreis theorem for the existence of the fundamental solution of a linear differential operator with constant coefficients. We find the fundamental solutions of linear differential operators of infinite order and show that the unique solution of the corresponding inhomogeneous equation can be represented as a convolution of the fundamental solution of this operator and the right-hand side. We also prove the existence and uniqueness theorem of the Cauchy problem for some linear differential equations in the module of formal power series with copolynomial coefficients.

Abstract:Zeckendorf's theorem states every positive integer has a unique decomposition as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. This result has been generalized to many sequences $\{a_n\}$ arising from an integer positive linear recurrence, each of which has a corresponding notion of a legal decomposition. Previous work proved the number of summands in decompositions of $m \in [a_n, a_{n+1})$ becomes normally distributed as $n\to\infty$, and the individual gap measures associated to each $m$ converge to geometric random variables, when the leading coefficient in the recurrence is positive. We explore what happens when this assumption is removed in two special sequences. In one we regain all previous results, including unique decomposition; in the other the number of legal decompositions exponentially grows and the natural choice for the legal decomposition (the greedy algorithm) only works approximately 92.6\% of the time (though a slight modification always works). We find a connection between the two sequences, which explains why the distribution of the number of summands and gaps between summands behave the same in the two examples. In the course of our investigations we found a new perspective on dealing with roots of polynomials associated to the characteristic polynomials. This allows us to remove the need for the detailed technical analysis of their properties which greatly complicated the proofs of many earlier results in the subject, as well as handle new cases beyond the reach of existing techniques.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the linear space of all two-sided generalized Fibonacci sequences $\{F_n\}_{n \in \mathbb{Z}}$ that satisfy the recurrence equation of order $k$: $F_n = F_{n-1} + F_{n-2} + \dots + F_{n-k}$. We give two types of explicit formula, one is based on generalized binomial coefficients and the other based on generalized multinomial coefficients.

Abstract:Let $f(x)\in {\mathbb Z}[x]$ be monic of degree $N\ge 2$. Suppose that $f(x)$ is monogenic, and that $f(x)$ is the characteristic polynomial of the $N$th order linear recurrence sequence $\Upsilon_f:=(U_n)_{n\ge 0}$ with initial conditions \[U_0=U_1=\cdots =U_{N-2}=0 \quad \mbox{and} \quad U_{N-1}=1.\] Let $p$ be a prime such that $f(x)$ is irreducible over ${\mathbb F}_p$ and $f(x^p)$ is irreducible over ${\mathbb Q}$. We prove that $f(x^p)$ is monogenic if and only if $\pi(p^2)\ne \pi(p)$, where $\pi(m)$ denotes the period of $\Upsilon_f$ modulo $m$. These results extend previous work of the author, and provide a new and simple test for the monogenicity of $f(x^p)$. We also provide some infinite families of such polynomials. This article extends previous work of the author.

The Least Common Multiple of Polynomial Values over Function Fields

Abstract:Cilleruelo conjectured that for an irreducible polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ of degree $d \geq 2$ one has $$\log\left[\mathrm{lcm}(f(1),f(2),\ldots f(N))\right]\sim(d-1)N\log N$$ as $N \to \infty$. He proved it in the case $d=2$ but it remains open for every polynomial with $d>2$. We investigate the function field analogue of the problem by considering polynomials over the ring $\mathbb F_q[T]$. We state an analog of Cilleruelo's conjecture in this setting: denoting by $$L_f(n) := \mathrm{lcm} \left(f\left(Q\right)\ : \ Q \in \mathbb F_q[T]\mbox{ monic},\, \mathrm{deg}\,Q = n\right)$$ we conjecture that \begin{equation}\label{eq:conjffabs}\mathrm{deg}\, L_f(n) \sim c_f \left(d-1\right) nq^n,\ n \to \infty\end{equation} ($c_f$ is an explicit constant dependent only on $f$, typically $c_f=1$). We give both upper and lower bounds for $L_f(n)$ and show that the conjectured asymptotic holds for a class of ``special" polynomials, initially considered by Leumi in this context, which includes all quadratic polynomials and many other examples as well. We fully classify these special polynomials. We also show that $\mathrm{deg}\, L_f(n) \sim \mathrm{deg}\,\mathrm{rad}\left(L_f(n)\right)$ (in other words the corresponding LCM is close to being squarefree), which is not known over $\mathbb Z$.
