Abstract:Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p$ and $Q$ be an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary parameter ideal. We give criteria for F-rationality of $R$ using the tight Hilbert function $H^*_Q(n)=\ell(R/(Q^n)^*$ and the coefficient $e_1^*(Q)$ of the tight Hilbert polynomial $P^*_Q(n)=\sum_{i=0}^d(-1)^ie_i^*(Q)\binom{n+d-1-i}{d-i}.$ We obtain a lower bound for the tight Hilbert function of $Q$ for equidimensional excellent local rings that generalises a result of Goto and Nakamura. We show that if $\dim R=2 $, the Hochster-Huneke graph of $R$ is connected and this lower bound is achieved then $R$ is F-rational. Craig Huneke asked if the $F$-rationality of unmixed local rings may be characterized by the vanishing of $e_1^*(Q).$ We construct examples to show that without additional conditions, this is not possible. Let $R$ be an excellent, reduced, equidimensional Noetherian local ring and $Q$ be generated by parameter test elements. We find formulas for $e_1^*(Q), e_2^*(Q), \ldots, e_d^*(Q)$ in terms of Hilbert coefficients of $Q$, lengths of local cohomology modules of $R,$ and the length of the tight closure of the zero submodule of $H^d_{\mathfrak{m}}(R).$ Using these we prove: $R$ is F-rational $\Leftrightarrow e_1^*(Q)=e_1(Q) \Leftrightarrow$ depth $R\geq 2$ and $e_1^*(Q)=0.$

Abstract:We study properties of the Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes with isolated singularities modulo two generic linear forms. Miller, Novik, and Swartz proved that if a complex has homologically isolated singularities, then its Stanley-Reisner ring modulo one generic linear form is Buchsbaum. Here we examine the case of non-homologically isolated singularities, providing many examples in which the Stanley-Reisner ring modulo two generic linear forms is a quasi-Buchsbaum but not Buchsbaum ring.

Abstract:Let $(A,\mathfrak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring of dimension $d>0$ with infinite residue field and $I$ an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal. Let $\mathcal I$ be an $I$-good filtration. We study an equality of Hilbert coefficients, first given by Elias and Valla, versus passage of Buchsbaum property from the local ring to the blow-up algebras. Suppose $e_1(\mathcal I)-e_1(Q)=2e_0(\mathcal I)-2\ell(A/I_1)-\ell(I_1/(I_2+Q))$ where $Q\subseteq I$, a minimal reduction of $\mathcal I$, is a standard parameter ideal. Under some mild conditions, we prove that if $A$ is Buchsbaum (generalized Cohen-Macaulay respectively), then the associated graded ring $G(\mathcal I)$ is Buchsbaum (generalized Cohen-Macaulay respectively). Our results settle a question of Corso in general for an $I$-good filtration. Further, let $f_0(I)= e_1(I)-e_0(I)-e_1(Q)+\ell(A/I)+\mu(I)-d+1$ and $e_1(I)-e_1(Q)=2e_0(I)-2\ell(A/I)-\ell(I/(I^2+Q))$. We prove, under mild conditions, that (1) if $A$ is generalized Cohen-Macaulay, then the special fiber ring $F_{\mathfrak{m}}(I)$ is generalized Cohen-Macaulay; In addition, if depth of $A$ is positive, then depth of $F_{\mathfrak {m}}(I)$ is same as depth of $A$ and (2) if $A$ is Buchsbaum and depth A$\geq d-1$, then $F_{\mathfrak{m}}(I)$ is Buchsbaum and the $I$-invariant of $F_{\mathfrak{m}}(I)$ is same as that of $A$.

Vanishing and non-negativity of the first normal Hilbert coefficient

Abstract:Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring such that $\widehat{R}$ is reduced. We prove that, when $\widehat{R}$ is $S_2$, if there exists a parameter ideal $Q\subseteq R$ such that $\bar{e}_1(Q)=0$, then $R$ is regular and $\nu(\mathfrak{m}/Q)\leq 1$. This leads to an affirmative answer to a problem raised by Goto-Hong-Mandal. We also give an alternative proof (in fact a strengthening) of their main result. In particular, we show that if $\widehat{R}$ is equidimensional, then $\bar{e}_1(Q)\geq 0$ for all parameter ideals $Q\subseteq R$, and in characteristic $p>0$, we actually have $e_1^*(Q)\geq 0$. Our proofs rely on the existence of big Cohen-Macaulay algebras.

Abstract:New upper bounds on the first and the second Hilbert coefficients of a Cohen-Macaulay module over a local ring are given. Characterizations are provided for some upper bounds to be attained. The characterizations are given in terms of Hilbert series as well as in terms of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the associated graded module.

Abstract:Let M be a finitely generated submodule of a free module over a multivariate polynomial ring with coefficients in a discrete coherent ring. We prove that its module MLT(M ) of leading terms is countably generated and provide an algorithm for computing explicitly a generating set. This result is also useful when MLT(M ) is not finitely generated. Suppose that the base ring is strongly discrete coherent. We provide a Buchberger-like algorithm and prove that it converges if, and only if, the module of leading terms is finitely generated. We also provide a constructive version of Hilbert's syzygy theorem by following Schreyer's method.

Abstract:A conjecture of Mallows and Sloane conveys the dominance of Hilbert series for finding basic invariants of finite linear groups if the Hilbert series of the invariant ring is of a certain explicit canonical form. However, the conjecture does not hold in general by a well-known counterexample of Stanley. In this article, we give a constraint on lower bounds for the degrees of homogeneous system of parameters of rings of invariants of finite linear groups depending on the universal denominator of Hilbert series defined by Derksen. We consider the conjecture with the universal denominator on abelian groups and provide some criteria guaranteeing the existence of homogeneous system of parameters of certain degrees. In this case, Stanley's counterexample could be avoided, and the homogeneous system of parameters is optimal.

Abstract:A local Cohen--Macaulay ring is called Ulrich-split if any short exact sequence of Ulrich modules split. In this paper we initiate the study of Ulrich split rings. We prove several necessary or sufficient criteria for this property, linking it to syzygies of the residue field and cohomology annihilator. We characterize Ulrich split rings of small dimensions. Over complex numbers, $2$-dimensional Ulrich split rings, which are normal and have minimal multiplicity, are precisely cyclic quotient singularities with at most two indecomposable Ulrich modules up to isomorphism. We give several ways to construct Ulrich split rings, and give a range of applications, from test ideal of the family of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules, to detecting projective/injective modules via vanishing of $\operatorname{Ext}$.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, and let $\mathfrak a$ be a proper ideal of $R$. Let $M$ be a non-zero finitely generated $R$-module with the finite projective dimension $p$. Also, let $N$ be a non-zero finitely generated $R$-module with $N\neq\mathfrak{a} N$, and assume that $c$ is the greatest non-negative integer with the property that $\operatorname{H}^i_{\mathfrak a}(N)$, the $i$-th local cohomology module of $N$ with respect to $\mathfrak a$, is non-zero. It is known that $\operatorname{H}^i_{\mathfrak a}(M, N)$, the $i$-th generalized local cohomology module of $M$ and $N$ with respect to $\mathfrak a$, is zero for all $i>p+c$. In this paper, we obtain the coassociated prime ideals of $\operatorname{H}^{p+c}_{\mathfrak a}(M, N)$. Using this, in the case when $R$ is a local ring and $c$ is equal to the dimension of $N$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of $\operatorname{H}^{p+c}_{\mathfrak a}(M, N)$ which extends the Lichtenbaum-Hartshorne vanishing theorem for generalized local cohomology modules.

Rings of finite Morley rank without the canonical base property

Abstract:We present numerous natural algebraic examples without the so-called Canonical Base Property (CBP). We prove that every commutative unitary ring of finite Morley rank without finite-index proper ideals satisfies the CBP if and only if it is a field, a ring of positive characteristic or a finite direct product of these. In addition, we also construct a CM-trivial commutative local ring with a finite residue field without the CBP. Furthermore, we also show that finite-dimensional non-associative algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ give rise to triangular rings without the CBP. This also applies to Baudisch's $2$-step nilpotent Lie algebras, which yields the existence of a $2$-step nilpotent group of finite Morley rank whose theory, in the pure language of groups, is CM-trivial and does not satisfy the CBP.

Abstract:We show that the ring of Siegel-Jacobi forms of fixed degree and of fixed or bounded ratio between weight and index is not finitely generated. Our main tool is the theory of toroidal b-divisors and their relation to convex geometry. As a byproduct of our methods, we prove a conjecture of Kramer about the representation of all Siegel-Jacobi forms as sections of certain line bundles and we recover a formula due to Tai for the asymptotic dimension of the space of Siegel-Jacobi forms of given ratio between weight and index.

A note on cohomological vanishing theorems

Abstract:We study $cd(M,N):=\sup\{j:H^j_{m}(M,N)\neq0\}$, and we prove the following over $AB$-rings: $cd(M,N)<\infty$ iff $cd(M, N)\leq2 dim R$. For locally free over the punctured spectrum, we present the better bound, namely $cd(M, N)<\infty$ iff $cd(M, N)\leq dim R,$ and show this is sharp for maximal Cohen-Macaulay, and prove that this detects freeness of $M$. We present some explicit examples to compute $cd(M, N)$. Now, suppose $R$ is only Cohen-Macaulay and of prime characteristic equipped with the Frobenius map $\varphi$. We show for some $n\gg 0$ that $cd(^{\varphi_n}R,M)<\infty$ iff $id_R(M)<\infty.$ This presents some criteria on regularity. Also, some vanishing results on $Ext^i_R(^{\varphi}R,-)$ are given, where $(-)\in\{R,^{\varphi}R\}$. We determine conditions under which the vanishing $Ext^i_R(^{\varphi}R,-)$ of restricted many $i$-th, implies the vanishing of all.

Flat morphisms with regular fibers do not preserve $F$-rationality

Abstract:For each positive prime integer $p$ we construct a standard graded $F$-rational ring $R$, over a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, such that $R\otimes_K\overline{K}$ is not $F$-rational. By localizing we obtain a flat local homomorphism $(R, \mathfrak{m}) \to (S, \mathfrak{n})$ such that $R$ is $F$-rational, $S/\mathfrak{m} S$ is regular (in fact, a field), but $S$ is not $F$-rational. In the process we also obtain standard graded $F$-rational rings $R$ for which $R\otimes_K R$ is not $F$-rational.

Abstract:The notion of Burch ideals and Burch submodules were introduced (and studied) by Dao-Kobayashi-Takahashi in 2020 and Dey-Kobayashi in 2022 respectively. The aim of this article is to characterize various local rings in terms of homological invariants of Burch ideals, Burch submodules, or that of the corresponding quotients. Specific applications of our results include the following: Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring. Let $M=I$ be an integrally closed ideal of $R$ such that ${\rm depth}(R/I)=0$, or $M = \mathfrak{m} N \neq 0$ for some submodule $N$ of a finitely generated $R$-module $L$ such that either ${\rm depth}(N)\ge 1$ or $L$ is free. It is shown that: (1) $I$ has maximal projective $($resp., injective$)$ complexity and curvature. (2) $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if ${\rm Ext}_R^n(M,R)=0$ for any three consecutive values of $n \ge \max\{{\rm depth}(R)-1,0\}$. (3) $R$ is CM (Cohen-Macaulay) if and only if CM-$\dim_R(M)$ is finite.

Singularities of Steinberg deformation rings

Abstract:Let $l$ and $p$ be distinct primes, let $F$ be a local field with residue field of characteristic $p$, and let $\mathfrak{X}$ be the irreducible component of the moduli space of Langlands parameters for $GL_3$ over $\mathbb{Z}_l$ corresponding to parameters of Steinberg type. We show that $\mathfrak{X}$ is Cohen-Macaulay and compute explicit equations for it. We also compute the Weil divisor class group of the special fibre of $\mathfrak{X}$, motivated by work of Manning for $GL_2$. Our methods involve the calculation of the cohomology of certain vector bundles on the flag variety, and build on work of Snowden, Vilonen-Xue, and Ngo.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero and $B$ a commutative integral domain that is also a finitely generated $k$-algebra. It is well known that if $k$ is algebraically closed and the "Field Makar-Limanov" invariant FML$(B)$ is equal to $k$, then $B$ is unirational over $k$. This article shows that, when $k$ is not assumed to be algebraically closed, the condition FML$(B)=k$ implies that there exists a nonempty Zariski-open subset $U$ of Spec$(B)$ with the following property: for each prime ideal $\mathfrak{p} \in U$, the $\kappa(\mathfrak{p})$-algebra $\kappa(\mathfrak{p}) \otimes_k B$ can be embedded in a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\kappa(\mathfrak{p})$, where $n=\dim B$ and $\kappa(\mathfrak{p}) = B_{\mathfrak{p}}/{\mathfrak{p}}B_{\mathfrak{p}}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we remove certain hypothesis in the theorem of Bertolini-Darmon on the rationality of Stark-Heegner points over narrow genus class fields of real quadratic fields. Along the way, we establish that certain normalized special values of $L$-functions are squares of rational numbers, a result that is of independent interest, and can be regarded as instances of the rank zero case of the Birch and Swinnerton-dyer conjecture modulo squares.
