Abstract:In this paper, we prove an existence and uniqueness result for a class of Dirichlet boundary value problems whose model is −Δpu=β|∇u|q+c|u|p−2u+finΩ,u=0on∂Ω, where Ω is an open bounded subset of RN, N≥2, 1<p<N, Δpu is the so-called p-Laplace operator, and p−1<q<p. We assume that β is a positive constant, c and f are measurable functions belonging to suitable Lorentz spaces. Our approach is based on Schauder fixed point theorem.

Abstract:We prove existence and nonexistence results concerning elliptic problems whose basic model is where is a bounded smooth domain, , , , and . The main achievement resides in handling a possibly singular ( ) first order term having a nonconstant coefficient in the presence of a superlinear ( ) zero order term. Our approach for the existence results is based on a fixed point argument. As a first step of this argument, an analysis on a related nonhomogeneous singular problem is carried out. The required a priori estimates are proved via a blow-up method.

Abstract:We consider weak solutions $u:\Omega_{T}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^{N}$ to parabolic systems of the type \[ u_{t}-\mathrm{div}\,A(x,t,Du)=f \qquad \mathrm{in}\ \Omega_{T}=\Omega\times(0,T), \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $T>0$ and the datum $f$ belongs to a suitable Orlicz space. The main novelty here is that the partial map $\xi\mapsto A(x,t,\xi)$ satisfies standard $p$-growth and ellipticity conditions for $p>1$ only outside the unit ball $\{\vert\xi\vert<1\}$. For $p>\frac{2n}{n+2}$ we establish that any weak solution \[ u\in C^{0}((0,T);L^{2}(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^{N}))\cap L^{p}(0,T;W^{1,p}(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^{N})) \] admits a locally bounded spatial gradient $Du$. Moreover, assuming that $u$ is essentially bounded, we recover the same result in the case $1<p\leq\frac{2n}{n+2}$ and $f=0$. Finally, we also prove the uniqueness of weak solutions to a Cauchy-Dirichlet problem associated with the parabolic system above. We emphasize that our results include both the degenerate case $p\geq2$ and the singular case $1<p<2$.

Abstract:We are interested in the regularity of weak solutions u to the elliptic equation in divergence form as in (1.1), and more precisely in their local boundedness and their local Lipschitz continuity under general growth conditions , the so called - growth conditions , as in (1.2) and (1.3) below. We found a unique set of assumptions to get all of these regularity properties at the same time; in the meantime we also found the way to treat a more general context, with explicit dependence on , in addition to the gradient variable . These aspects require particular attention, due to the -context, with some differences and new difficulties compared to the standard case .

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a theorem concerning the existence of three solutions for the following boundary value problem: \begin{equation*} -\mathcal{M}_{\lambda,\Lambda}^+(D^2u)-\Gamma|Du|^2=f(u)~~~\text{in}\ \Omega, u=0~~~\text{on}\ \partial\Omega, \end{equation*} where $f:[0,\infty]\to[0,\infty]$ is a $C^{\alpha}$ function and $\Omega$ denotes a bounded, smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$. By constructing two ordered pairs of sub and supersolutions for a specific class of $f$ exhibiting sublinear growth, we further establish the existence of three positive solutions to the aforementioned boundary value problem.

When $\lambda$ is large enough, we prove the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions to the equation.

Abstract:We establish new, optimal gradient continuity estimates for solutions to a class of 2nd order partial differential equations, $\mathscr{L}(X, \nabla u, D^2 u) = f$, whose diffusion properties (ellipticity) degenerate along the \textit{a priori} unknown singular set of an existing solution, $\mathscr{S}(u) := \{X : \nabla u(X) = 0 \}$. The innovative feature of our main result concerns its optimality -- the sharp, encoded smoothness aftereffects of the operator. Such a quantitative information usually plays a decisive role in the analysis of a number of analytic and geometric problems. Our result is new even for the classical equation $|\nabla u | \cdot \Delta u = 1$. We further apply these new estimates in the study of some well known problems in the theory of elliptic PDEs.

Abstract:This paper studies global a priori gradient estimates for divergence-type equations patterned over the $p$-Laplacian with first-order terms having polynomial growth with respect to the gradient, under suitable integrability assumptions on the source term of the equation. The results apply to elliptic problems with unbounded data in Lebesgue spaces complemented with Neumann boundary conditions posed on convex domains of the Euclidean space.

Abstract:In this paper we first introduce an innovative equivalent norm in the Musielak-Orlicz Sobolev spaces in a very general setting and we then present a new result on the boundedness of the solutions of a wide class of nonlinear Neumann problems, both of independent interest. Moreover, we study a variable exponent double phase problem with a nonlinear boundary condition and prove the existence of multiple solutions under very general assumptions on the nonlinearities. To be more precise, we get constant sign solutions (nonpositive and nonnegative) via a mountain-pass approach and a sign-changing solution by using an appropriate subset of the corresponding Nehari manifold along with the Brouwer degree and the Quantitative Deformation Lemma.

Abstract:Let Ω be a bounded domain in Rn, n⩾3, with the boundary ∂Ω∈C3. We consider the following singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic problem on Ωε2Δu−u+f(u)=0,u>0on Ω,∂u∂ν=0on ∂Ω, where ν is an exterior normal to ∂Ω and a nonlinearity f of subcritical growth. Under rather strong conditions on f, it has been known that for small ε>0, there exists a solution uε of the above problem which exhibits a spike layer near local maximum points of the mean curvature H on ∂Ω as ε→0. In this paper, we obtain the same result under some conditions on f (Berestycki–Lions conditions), which we believe to be almost optimal.

Abstract:We prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to the problem $-\Delta u = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^N_+ := \{(x',x_N)\in\mathbb{R}^N \mid x_N>0 \}$ under zero Dirichlet boundary condition with a possible singular nonlinearity $f$. In some situations, we can derive a precise estimate on the blow-up rate of $\frac{\partial u}{\partial\eta}$ as $x_N \to 0^+$, where $(\eta,e_N)>0$, and obtain a classification result. The main tools we use are the method of moving planes and the sliding method.

Abstract:We prove a new, universal gradient continuity estimate for solutions to quasilinear equations with varying coefficients at points on its critical singular set of degeneracy $S(u) := \{X : D u(X) = 0 \}$. Our main Theorem reveals that along $S(u)$, $u$ is asymptotically as regular as solutions to constant coefficient equations. In particular, along the critical set $S(u)$, $Du$ enjoys a modulus of continuity much superior than the, possibly low, continuity feature of the coefficients. Our main, leading result fosters a new understanding on smoothness properties of solutions to degenerate or singular equations, beyond typical elliptic regularity estimates, precisely where the diffusion attributes of the equation collapse.

Abstract:In the present paper we deal with a quasi-linear elliptic equation depending on a sublinear nonlinearity involving the gradient. We prove the existence of a nontrivial nodal solution employing the theory of invariant sets of descending flow together with sub-supersolution techniques, gradient regularity arguments, strong comparison principle for the -Laplace operator. The same conclusion is obtained for an eigenvalue problem under a different set of assumptions.

Abstract:We study how the smoothness of the initial datum and the free term affect the global regularity properties of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the class of parabolic equations of $p(x,t)$-Laplace type %with nonlinear sources depending on the solution and its gradient: \[ u_t-\Delta_{p(\cdot)}u=f(z)+F(z,u,\nabla u),\quad z=(x,t)\in Q_T=\Omega\times (0,T), \] with the nonlinear source $F(z,u,\nabla u)=a(z)|u|^{q(z)-2}u+|\nabla u|^{s(z)-2}(\vec c,\nabla u)$. It is proven the existence of a solution such that if $|\nabla u(x,0)|\in L^r(\Omega)$ for some $r\geq \max\{2,\max p(z)\}$, then the gradient preserves the initial order of integrability in time, gains global higher integrability, and the solution acquires the second-order regularity in the following sense: \[ \text{$|\nabla u(x,t)|\in L^r(\Omega)$ for a.e. $t \in (0,T)$}, \qquad \text{$|\nabla u|^{p(z)+\rho+r-2} \in L^1(Q_T)$ for any $\rho \in \left(0, \frac{4}{N+2}\right)$}, \] and \[ |\nabla u|^{\frac{p(z)+r}{2}-2}\nabla u\in L^2(0,T;W^{1,2}(\Omega))^N. \] The exponent $r$ is arbitrary and independent of $p(z)$ if $f\in L^{N+2}(Q_T)$, while for $f\in L^\sigma(Q_T)$ with $\sigma \in (2,N+2)$ the exponent $r$ belongs to a bounded interval whose endpoints are defined by $\max p(z)$, $\min p(z)$, $N$, and $\sigma$. An integration by parts formula is also proven, which is of independent interest.

We assume that $f \in L^r(\Omega)$ with $r>N/p$. The feature of this study is the inclusion of a possibly singular gradient-dependent term $\Psi(u,\nabla u)=\sum_{j=1}^N |u|^{\theta_j-2}u\, |\partial_j u|^{q_j}$, where $\theta_j>0$ and $0\leq q_j<p_j$ for $1\leq j\leq N$.
