Abstract:Following our previous work, we develop an algorithm to compute a presentation of the fundamental group of certain partial compactifications of the complement of a complex arrangement of lines in the projective plane. It applies, in particular, to homology planes arising from arrangements of lines. This permits to determine the infinitude of the fundamental group of homology planes of log-general type that may be the first examples of this type.

Moving plane method for varifolds and applications

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a version of the moving plane method that applies to potentially quite singular hypersurfaces, generalizing the classical moving plane method for smooth hypersurfaces. Loosely speaking, our version for varifolds shows that smoothness and symmetry at infinity (respectively at the boundary) can be promoted to smoothness and symmetry in the interior. The key feature, in contrast with the classical formulation of the moving plane principle, is that smoothness is a conclusion rather than an assumption. We implement our moving plane method in the setting of compact varifolds with smooth boundary and in the setting of complete varifolds. A key ingredient is a Hopf lemma for stationary and CMC-varifolds. Our Hopf lemma provides a new tool to establish smoothness of varifolds, and works in arbitrary dimensions and without any stability assumptions. As applications of our new moving plane method, we prove varifold uniqueness results for the catenoid, spherical caps, and Delaunay surfaces that are inspired by classical uniqueness results by Schoen, Alexandrov, Meeks and Korevaar-Kusner-Solomon. We also prove a varifold version of Alexandrov's Theorem for compact CMC-varifolds in hyperbolic space.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:The path complex and its homology were defined in previous papers of the authors. The notion of a path complex is a natural discrete generalization of the notion of a simplicial complex. The theory of path complexes contains homotopy invariant homology theory of digraphs and (nondirected) graphs. In the paper we study the homology theory of path complexes. In particular, we describe functorial properties of paths complexes, introduce the notion of homotopy for path complexes and prove the homotopy invariance of path homology groups. We prove also several theorems that are similar to the results of classical homology theory of simplicial complexes. Then we apply this approach to construct homology theories on various categories of hypergraphs. We describe basic properties of these homology theories and relations between them. As a particular case, these results give new homology theories on the category of simplicial complexes. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.
Singular plane curves: freeness and combinatorics

Abstract:In this paper we focus on various aspects of singular complex plane curves, mostly in the context of their homological properties and the associated combinatorial structures. We formulate some challenging open problems that can point to new directions in research, for example by introducing weak Ziegler pairs of curve arrangements. Moreover, we construct new examples of different Ziegler pairs, in both the classical and the weak sense, and present new geometric approaches to construction problems of singular plane curves.

Abstract:This is an expository article on the A-side of Kontsevich's Homological Mirror Symmetry conjecture. We give first a self-contained study of $A_\infty$-categories and their homological algebra, and later restrict to Fukaya categories, with particular emphasis on the basics of the underlying Floer theory, and the geometric features therein. Finally, we place the theory in the context of mirror symmetry, building towards its main predictions.

Abstract:One of the prime motivation for topology was Homotopy theory, which captures the general idea of a continuous transformation between two entities, which may be spaces or maps. In later decades, an algebraic formulation of topology was discovered with the development of Homology theory. Some of the deepest results in topology are about the connections between Homotopy and Homology. These results are proved using intricate constructions. This paper re-proves these connections via an axiomatic approach that provides a common ground for homotopy and homology in arbitrary categories. One of the main contributions is a re-interpretation of convexity as an extrinsic rather than intrinsic property. All the axioms and results are applicable for the familiar context of topological spaces. This creates a complete framework for an algebraic characterization of various categories such as Dynamical systems, Open games, and Fractals, which also preserves a notion of Homotopy.

Geometry on surfaces, a source for mathematical developments

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others. Classical methods and new techniques complement each other. The final version of this paper will appear as a chapter in the Volume Surveys in Geometry. II (ed. A. In 1980, Kirby found the first example by proving that the boundary of the Ramanujam surface bounds a Mazur manifold and it has remained a single example since then. By tracing their initial step, we provide the first additional examples and we present three infinite families of Kirby–Ramanujam spheres. Also, we show that one of our families of Kirby–Ramanujam spheres is diffeomorphic to the splice of two certain families of Brieskorn spheres. Since this family of Kirby–Ramanujam spheres bound contractible 4‐manifolds, they lie in the class of the trivial element in the homology cobordism group; however, both splice components are separately linearly independent in that group.

Diffuse radio emission in a REFLEX cluster

Abstract:Deep Very Large Array radio observations are presented for the REFLEX clusters RXCJ0437.1+0043 and RXCJ1314.4-2515. They are at similar distance and show similar X-ray luminosity, but they are quite different in X-ray structure. Indeed RXCJ0437.1+0043 is regular and relaxed, whereas RXCJ1314.4-2515 is characterized by substructure and possible merging processes. The radio images reveal no diffuse emission in RXCJ0437.1+0043, and a complex diffuse structure in RXCJ1314.4-2515. The diffuse source in the latter cluster consists of a central radio halo which extends to the West toward the cluster periphery and bends to the North to form a possible relic. Another extended source is detected in the eastern cluster peripheral region. Although there could be plausible optical identifications for this source, it might also be a relic candidate owing to its very steep spectrum. The present results confirm the tight link between diffuse cluster radio sources and cluster merger processes.

Abstract:In the paper we continue the investigation of the path homology theory of digraphs that was constructed in our previous papers. We prove basic theorems that are similar to the theorems of classical algebraic topology and introduce several natural constructions of digraphs which are very helpful to investigate the path homology theory. We describe relation of our results to the Eilenberg-Steenrod axiomatic of homology theory.

Abstract:Putman and Wieland conjectured that if Σ∼→Σ is a finite branched cover between closed oriented surfaces of sufficiently high genus, then the orbits of all nonzero elements of H1(Σ∼;Q) under the action of lifts to Σ∼ of mapping classes on Σ are infinite. We prove that this holds if H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of simple closed curves on Σ . We also prove that the subspace of H1(Σ∼;Q) spanned by such lifts is a symplectic subspace. Finally, simple closed curves lie on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 2‐holed spheres, and we prove that H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of loops on Σ lying on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 3‐holed spheres.

Abstract:We introduce a hyperbolic reflection group trick which builds closed aspherical manifolds out of compact ones and preserves hyperbolicity, residual finiteness, and—for almost all primes p — -homology growth above the middle dimension. We use this trick, embedding theory and manifold topology to construct Gromov hyperbolic 7-manifolds that do not virtually fiber over a circle out of graph products of large finite groups.

Abstract:We study the double homology associated to triangulated spheres and present two results. First, we explicitly compute the double homology for minimum degree sphere triangulations. Using a spectral sequence argument, we compute the effect of removing a maximal simplex of a non-neighborly sphere triangulation. Using these results and computational aid we generate complexes with exotic double homology rank. We also relate the double homology of a complex with how neighborly it is.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a new axiomatization of planar geometry by reinterpreting the original axioms of Euclid. The basic concept is still that of a line segment but its equivalent notion of betweenness is viewed as a topological, not a metric concept. That leads quickly to the notion of connectedness without any need to dwell on the definition of topology. In our approach line segments must be connected. Lines and planes are unified via the concept of separation: lines are separated into two components by each point, planes contain lines that separate them into two components as well. We add a subgroup of bijections preserving line segments and establishing unique isomorphism of basic geometrical sets, and the axiomatic structure is complete. Of fundamental importance is the Fixed Point Theorem that allows for creation of the concepts of length and congruency of line segments. The resulting structure is much more in sync with modern science than other axiomatic approaches to planar geometry. For instance, it leads naturally to the Erlangen Program in geometry. Our Conditions of Homogeneity and Rigidity have two interpretations. In physics, they correspond to the basic tenet that independent observers should arrive at the same measurement and are related to boosts in special relativity. In geometry, they mean uniqueness of congruence for certain geometrical figures. Another thread of the paper is the introduction of boundary at infinity, an important concept of modern mathematics, and linking of Pasch Axiom to endowing boundaries at infinity with a natural relation of betweenness. That way spherical geometry can be viewed as geometry of boundaries at infinity.

Abstract:Results on $8$-dimensional topological planes are scattered in the literature. It is the aim of the present paper to give a survey of these geometries, in particular of information obtained after the appearance of the treatise Compact Projective Planes or not included in this book. For some theorems new proofs are given and a few related results concerning planes of other dimensions are presented.

Mathematical Structures in Computer Science

Abstract:In this paper, we present a constructive and proof-relevant development of graph theory, including the notion of maps, their faces and maps of graphs embedded in the sphere, in homotopy type theory (HoTT). This allows us to provide an elementary characterisation of planarity for locally directed finite and connected multigraphs that takes inspiration from topological graph theory, particularly from combinatorial embeddings of graphs into surfaces. A graph is planar if it has a map and an outer face with which any walk in the embedded graph is walk-homotopic to another. A result is that this type of planar maps forms a homotopy set for a graph. As a way to construct examples of planar graphs inductively, extensions of planar maps are introduced. We formalise the essential parts of this work in the proof assistant Agda with support for HoTT.
