On natural complexes in Iwasawa theory

Abstract:We consider two natural complexes that appear in recent formulations of equivariant Iwasawa main conjectures for extensions of not necessarily totally real fields. We show that both complexes are isomorphic in the derived category of Iwasawa modules if the weak Leopoldt conjecture holds for the relevant $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension.

Abstract:We establish the Iwasawa main conjecture for semi-stable abelian varieties over a function field of characteristic $p$ under certain restrictive assumptions. Namely we consider $p$-torsion free $p$-adic Lie extensions of the base field which contain the constant $\mathbb Z_p$-extension and are everywhere unramified. Under the classical $\mu=0$ hypothesis we give a proof which mainly relies on the interpretation of the Selmer complex in terms of $p$-adic cohomology [TV] together with the trace formulas of [EL1].

Abstract:Let K = Q(root-q), where q is any prime number congruent to 7 modulo 8, and let O be the ring of integers of K. The prime 2 splits in K, say 2O = pp*, and there is a unique Z(2)-extension K-infinity of K which is unramified outside p. Let H be the Hilbert class field of K, and write H-infinity = HK infinity. Let M(H-infinity) be the maximal abelian 2-extension of H-infinity which is unramified outside the primes above p, and put X(H-infinity) = Gal(M(H-infinity)/H-infinity). We prove that X(H-infinity) is always a finitely generated Z(2)-module, by an elliptic analogue of Sinnott's cyclotomic argument. We then use this result to prove for the first time the weak p-adic Leopoldt conjecture for the compositum J(infinity) of K-infinity with arbitrary quadratic extensions J of H. We also prove some new cases of the finite generation of the Mordell-Weil group E(J(infinity)) modulo torsion of certain elliptic curves E with complex multiplication by O.
On $μ$-invariants and isogenies for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:We give several formulas for how Iwasawa $\mu$-invariants of abelian varieties over unramified $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extensions of function fields change under isogeny. These are analogues of Schneider's formula in the number field setting. We also prove that the validity of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (including the leading coefficient formula) over function fields is invariant under isogeny, without using the result of Kato--Trihan.

Abstract:We prove a general structure theorem for finitely presented torsion modules over a class of commutative rings that need not be Noetherian. As a first application, we then use this result to study the Weil- étale cohomology groups of $\mathbb{G}_m$ for curves over finite fields.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We give an unconditional proof of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields for every admissible one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension whose Galois group has an abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of any $\mu$-invariant. As applications, we deduce the Coates-Sinnott conjecture away from its $2$-primary part and new cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Tate motives.

Abstract:This paper explores Iwasawa theory from a graph theoretic perspective, focusing on the algebraic and combinatorial properties of Cayley graphs. Using representation theory, we analyze Iwasawa-theoretic invariants within $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-towers of Cayley graphs, revealing connections between graph theory, number theory, and group theory. Key results include the factorization of associated Iwasawa polynomials and the decomposition of $\mu$- and $\lambda$-invariants. Additionally, we apply these insights to complete graphs, establishing conditions under which these invariants vanish.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the Iwasawa main conjecture of totally real fields for certain specific non-commutative $p$-adic Lie extensions, using the integral logarithms introduced by Oliver and Taylor. Our result gives certain generalization of Kazuya Kato's proof of the main conjecture for Galois extensions of Heisenberg type.

Minimal resolutions of Iwasawa modules

Abstract:In this paper, we study the module-theoretic structure of classical Iwasawa modules. More precisely, for a finite abelian $p$-extension $K/k$ of totally real fields and the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_{\infty}/K$, we consider $X_{K_{\infty},S}={\rm Gal}(M_{K_{\infty},S}/K_{\infty})$ where $S$ is a finite set of places of $k$ containing all ramifying places in $K_{\infty}$ and archimedean places, and $M_{K_{\infty},S}$ is the maximal abelian pro-$p$-extension of $K_{\infty}$ unramified outside $S$. We give lower and upper bounds of the minimal numbers of generators and of relations of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(K_{\infty}/k)]]$-module, using the $p$-rank of ${\rm Gal}(K/k)$. This result explains the complexity of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(K_{\infty}/k)]]$-module when the $p$-rank of ${\rm Gal}(K/k)$ is large. Moreover, we prove an analogous theorem in the setting that $K/k$ is non-abelian. We also study the Iwasawa adjoint of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$, and the minus part of the unramified Iwasawa module for a CM-extension. In order to prove these theorems, we systematically study the minimal resolutions of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$.

Non-vanishing of Kolyvagin systems and Iwasawa theory

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and $p$ an odd prime. In 1991 Kolyvagin conjectured that the system of cohomology classes for the $p$-adic Tate module of $E$ derived from Heegner points on $E$ over ring class fields of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ is non-trivial. In this paper we prove Kolyvagin's conjecture in the cases where $p$ is a prime of good ordinary reduction for $E$ that splits in $K$ and a $p$-adic anticyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $E/K$ holds. In particular, our results cover many cases where $p$ is an Eisenstein prime, complementing W. Zhang's progress towards the conjecture. Our methods also yield a proof of a refinement of Kolyvagin's conjecture expressing the divisibility index of the $p$-adic Heegner point Kolyvagin system in terms of the Tamagawa numbers of $E$, as conjectured by W. Zhang in 2014, as well as proofs of analogous results for the Kolyvagin systems obtained from the cyclotomic Euler system of Beilinson--Kato elements.

The structure of deformed double complexes on the Iwasawa manifold

Abstract:The Kuranishi family of the Iwasawa manifold give rise naturally to a family of (deformed) double complexes. By using the structure theorem of double complexes due to Stelzig and Qi-Khovanov, we show there are exactly $3$ isomorphism types in this family and determine explicitly structures of these $3$ types. As an application, we computed the Frölicher spectral sequence for each fiber in the Kuranishi family of the Iwasawa manifold.

Abstract:For a number field $k$ and an odd prime number $p$, we consider the maximal multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $\tilde{k}$ of $k$ and the unramified Iwasawa module $X(\tilde{k})$, which is the Galois group of the maximal unramified abelian $p$-extension over $\tilde{k}$. In the present article, we discus classifying CM-fields $k$ which are decomposed completely at $p$ such that $X(\tilde{k})=0$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and let $d\in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. In this paper, following the analogy between knots and primes, we study the $p$-torsion growth in a compatible system of $(\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z})^d$-covers of 3-manifolds and establish several analogues of Cuoco--Monsky's multivariable versions of Iwasawa's class number formula. Our main goal is to establish the Cuoco--Monsky type formula for branched covers of links in rational homology 3-spheres. In addition, we prove the precise formula over integral homology 3-spheres prompted by Greenberg's conjecture. We also obtain results on reduced Alexander polynomials and on the Betti number periodicity. Furthermore, we investigate the twisted Whitehead links in $S^3$ and point out that the Iwasawa $\mu$-invariant of a $\mathbb{Z}_p^{\,2}$-cover can be an arbitrary non-negative integer. We also calculate the Iwasawa $\mu$ and $\lambda$-invariants of the Alexander polynomials of all links in Rolfsen's table.

Formal lifting of dualizing complexes and consequences

Abstract:We show that for a Noetherian ring $A$ that is $I$-adically complete for an ideal $I$, if $A/I$ admits a dualizing complex, so does $A$. This gives an alternative proof of the fact that a Noetherian complete local ring admits a dualizing complex. We discuss several consequences of this result. We also consider a generalization of the notion of dualizing complexes to infinite-dimensional rings and prove the results in this generality. In addition, we give an alternative proof of the fact that every excellent Henselian local ring admits a dualizing complex, using ultrapower.

Iwasawa invariants of finite spectra

Abstract:We calculate the classical Iwasawa invariants of the Iwasawa modules associated to the $p$-adic topological $K$-theory of finite spectra. We show that the graded average of the orders of $n$ consecutive $K(1)$-local homotopy groups of a finite spectrum $X$ grows asymptotically like $\frac{-\log_p(n)}{2}$ times the total Iwasawa $\lambda$-invariant of $X$. We show that the Iwasawa $\mu$-invariants of finite spectra are all zero. Finally, we prove a spectral analogue of a weak form of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture, describing the orders of the $K(1)$-local homotopy groups of a certain ``torsion-free replacement'' of $X$ in terms of the characteristic polynomials of the Iwasawa modules associated to $X$.

Abstract:Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime number, $E/\mathbb{Q}$ an elliptic curve with good supersingular reduction at $p$, and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field such that the root number of $E$ over $K$ is $-1$. When $p$ is split in $K$, Castella and Wan formulated the plus and minus Heegner point main conjecture for $E$ along the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$, and proved it for semistable curves. We generalize their results to two settings: 1. Under the assumption that $p$ is split in $K$ but without assuming $a_p(E)=0$, we study Sprung-type main conjectures for $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type abelian varieties at non-ordinary primes and prove it under some conditions. 2. We formulate, relying on the recent work of the first-named author with Kobayashi and Ota, plus and minus Heegner point main conjectures for elliptic curves when $p$ is inert in $K$, and prove the minus main conjecture for semistable elliptic curves. These results yield a $p$-converse to the Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem for $E$. Our method relies on Howard's framework of bipartite Euler system, Zhang's resolution of Kolyvagin's conjecture and the recent proof of Kobayashi's main conjecture.

Abstract:We study special values of L-functions of elliptic curves over Q twisted by Artin representations that factor through a false Tate curve extension $Q(\mu_p^\infty,\sqrt[p^\infty]{m})/Q$. In this setting, we explain how to compute L-functions and the corresponding Iwasawa-theoretic invariants of non-abelian twists of elliptic curves. Our results provide both theoretical and computational evidence for the main conjecture of non-commutative Iwasawa theory.

Fitting Ideals of Projective Limits of Modules over Non-Noetherian Iwasawa Algebras

Abstract:Greither and Kurihara proved a theorem about the commutativity of projective limits and Fitting ideals for modules over the classical equivariant Iwasawa algebra $\Lambda_G=\mathbb{Z}_p[[T]][G]$, where $G$ is a finite, abelian group and $\Bbb Z_p$ is the ring of $p$--adic integers, for some prime $p$. In this paper, we generalize their result first to the Noetherian Iwasawa algebra $\mathbb{Z}_p[[T_1, T_2, \cdots, T_n]][G]$ and, most importantly, to the non-Noetherian algebra $\mathbb{Z}_p[[T_1, T_2, \cdots, T_n, \cdots]][G]$ of countably many generators. The latter generalization is motivated by the recent work of Bley-Popescu on the geometric Equivariant Iwasawa Conjecture for function fields, where the Iwasawa algebra is not Noetherian, of the type described above. Applications of these results to the emerging field of non-Noetherian Iwasawa Theory will be given in an upcoming paper.

Abstract:Inspired by some recent work of M. Farber, W. Lück and M. Shubin on L2 homotopy invariants of infinite Galois coverings of simplicial complexes (L2 Betti numbers and Novikov-Shubin invariants), this article extends Atiyah's L2 index theory to coherent analytic sheaves on complex analytic spaces. Let $X$ be a complex analytic space with a proper cocompact biholomorphic action of a discrete group $G$. Let $F$ be a $G$-equivariant coherent analytic sheaf on $X$. We give a meaningful notion of a L2 section of $F$ on $X$. We also construct L2 cohomology groups. We prove that these L2 cohomology groups belong to an abelian category of topological $G$-modules introduced by M. Farber. On this category there are two kinds of invariants: Von Neumann dimension and Novikov-Shubin invariants. The alternating sum of the Von Neumann dimensions of the L2 cohomology groups of $F$ can be computed by an analogue of Atiyah's L2 index theorem. Novikov-Shubin invariants show up when the L2 cohomology groups are non-Hausdorff and, like in algebraic topology, are still very intriguing (and not very well understood).

Abstract:We prove an existence theorem for dualizing complexes over noncommutative noetherian complete semilocal algebras, which generalizes Van den Bergh's existence theorem in the graded case. Using the dualizing complex, noncommutative versions of Bass theorem and the no-holes theorem are proved. We also prove that noetherian complete semilocal algebras satisfying polynomial identities are catenary.
On convexity and the Iwasawa decomposition of split real and complex Kac-Moody groups

Abstract:We prove an analogue of Kostant's convexity theorem for split real and complex Kac-Moody groups associated to free and cofree root data. The result can be seen as a first step towards describing the multiplication map in a Kac-Moody group in terms of Iwasawa coordinates. Our method involves a detailed analysis of the geometry of Weyl group orbits in the Cartan subalgebra of a real Kac-Moody algebra. It provides an alternative proof of Kostant convexity for semisimple Lie groups and also generalizes a linear analogue of Kostant's theorem for Kac-Moody algebras that has been established by Kac and Peterson in 1984.
