Abstract:The nucleus-nucleus impact parameter and collision geometry of a heavy ion collision are typically characterized by assigning a collision "centrality". In all present heavy ion experiments centrality is measured indirectly, by detecting the number of particles or the energy of the particles produced in the interactions, typically at high rapidity. Centrality parameters are associated to the measured detector response using the Glauber model. This approach suffers from systematic uncertainties related to the assumptions about the particle production mechanism and limitations of the Glauber model. In the collider based experiments there is a unique possibility to measure centrality parameters by registering spectator fragments remaining from the collision. This approach does not require model assumptions and relies on the fact that spectators and participants are related via the total number of nucleons in the colliding species. This article describes the concept of the centrality detector for heavy ion experiment, which measures the total mass number of all fragments by measuring their deflection in the magnetic field of the collider elements.

Centrality definition in e+A collisions at the Electron-Ion Collider

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the feasibility of defining centrality in electron-ion collisions at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) by examining the correlation between the impact parameter and several observables, including total energy, total transverse momentum, and total number of particles. Using the BeAGLE Monte Carlo generator, we simulate e+Au and e+Ru collisions at different energies and analyze the correlation between the impact parameter and these observables across different kinematic regions. Our findings indicate that the correlation is weak in the central rapidity region but becomes stronger in the forward and far-forward rapidity regions. However, the correlation is not sufficiently robust to allow for precise centrality determination. We conclude that defining centrality in electron-ion collisions is more challenging than in ion-ion collisions, necessitating further studies to develop a robust centrality definition for the EIC.

Abstract:Centrality-dependent measurements of hadron and jet cross section attenuation in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei can shed new light on the physics of final-state interactions in the nuclear matter, including the path-length dependence of the in-medium parton shower formation and evolution. Recent simulation studies have demonstrated the feasibility of experimental centrality determination in $e$A reactions at the electron-ion collider via neutron detection in the zero-degree calorimeter. Motivated by these results, we present the first theoretical calculation of the production rate modification for hadrons and jets in central and peripheral $e$Pb collisions. We find that the variation in the suppression of inclusive jet cross section as a function of centrality is less than a factor of two. In more differential measurements, such as the distribution of hadrons versus the hadronization fraction $z_h$, the difference can be enhanced up to an order of magnitude.

Abstract:A gradual transition to the reflecting scattering mode developing already at the LHC energies is affecting multiparticle production dynamics, in particular, relation of the centrality with the impact parameter values of $pp$--collisions. We discuss the issues in the framework of the geometrical picture for the multiparticle production processes proposed by Chou and Yang. We consider effects of reflective scattering mode presence for the inclusive cross-sections.

Abstract:With the help of AMPT default model, we study the influence of initial size (centrality of collisions) on higher cumulant ratios of net-proton distributions. If the centrality is presented by impact parameter, there is a strong centrality dependent, in particular, in those peripheral collisions. This dependence is slightly reduced if the centrality is presented by number of participant, or charged multiplicity. However, the dynamical ratios are almost centrality independent. So the centrality dependence of dynamical ratios at RHIC beam energy scan are presented.

Abstract:The newly proposed combinational approach, called the grand combinational model (GCM), as would be described in detail in the text, is still under our careful scrutiny. By applying it, we have attempted to analyze here the characteristics of both the transverse momentum($p_{\rm{T}}$)-, and centrality-dependence of production of the main varieties of the secondaries measured in $AuAu$ collisions at BNL-RHIC at both $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=130$ GeV and $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=200$ GeV by PHENIX Collaboration. Besides, with the help of it, we have also investigated the nature of centrality-dependence of the average transverse momenta of the various major categories of particles in $AuAu$ collisions at RHIC. The model seems to survive quite smoothly the acid tests of the latest PHENIX data, as it accommodates data modestly well on these twin aspects. The study reveals a kind of universality of nature of the hadronic secondaries and also of the basic particle and nuclear interactions at high energies. However, in the end, we precisely point out both the strengths and limitations of the specific model under consideration here.

Abstract:Directed flow and elliptic flow of final state particles in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions in the EMU01 experiment have been studied. The dependences of directed flow and elliptic flow on incident energy and impact centrality of outgoing particles are presented. The results exhibit strong dependence of flow on centrality and energy. We also suggest a more reliable way to determine the event plane resolution here.

Abstract:Measurements of di-hadron azimuthal correlations at different centralities for Au + Au collisions at 200A GeV were reported by the PHENIX Collaboration. The data were presented for different ranges of transverse momentum. In particular, it was observed that the away-side correlation evolves from a double-to a single-peak structure when the centrality decreases. In this work, we show that these features naturally appear due to an interplay between the centrality-dependent smooth background elliptic flow and the one produced by event-byevent fluctuating peripheral tubes. To compare with the PHENIX data, we also carry out numerical simulations by using a hydrodynamical code NEXSPHERIO, and calculate the correlations by both cumulant and the ZYAM method employed by the PHENIX Collaboration. Our results are in reasonable agreement with the data. A brief discussion on the physical content of the present model and its difference from other viewpoints is also presented.
Centrality Dependence of Two-Particle Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions

Abstract:Data from the PHOBOS detector have been used to study two-particle correlations over a broad range of pseudorapidity. A simple cluster model parameterization has been applied to inclusive two-particle correlations over a range of centrality for both Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200GeV. Analysis of the data for Au+Au has recently been extended to more peripheral collisions showing that the previously-observed rise in cluster size with decreasing system size eventually reaches a maximum value. Model studies have been used to quantify the significant effect of limited detector acceptance on the extracted cluster parameters. In the case of Au+Au, correlations between a trigger particle with pT>2.5GeV and inclusive associated particles have also been studied. These reveal the presence of a `ridge' at small relative azimuthal angle which extends with roughly constant amplitude out to the largest relative pseudorapidity studied. The large phase-space coverage of the PHOBOS detector has enabled a quantitative understanding of the so-called `ZYAM' parameter used in the subtraction of the contribution of elliptic flow to these triggered correlations.

Abstract:The centrality dependence of transverse momentum spectra for identified hadrons at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200$ GeV is systematically studied in a quark combination model. The $\mathrm{{p}_{T}}$ spectra of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p(\bar{p})$ and $\Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})$ in different centrality bins and the nuclear modification factors ($R_{CP}$) for these hadrons are calculated. The centrality dependence of the average collective transverse velocity $<\beta (r)>$ for the hot and dense quark matter is obtained in Au+Au collisions, and it is applied to a relative smaller Cu+Cu collision system. The centrality dependence of $\mathrm{{p}_{T}}$ spectra and the $R_{CP}$ for $\pi^{0}$, $K_{s}^{0}$ and $\Lambda$ in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200$ GeV are well described. The results show that $<\beta (r)>$ is only a function of the number of participants $N_{part}$ and it is independent of the collision system.

Abstract:We studied the effects of centrality fluctuation and deuteron formation on the cumulants ($C_n$) and correlation functions ($\kappa_n$) of protons up to sixth order in most central ($b<3$ fm) Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 3 GeV from a microscopic transport model (JAM). The results are presented as a function of rapidity acceptance within transverse momentum $0.4<p_{T}<2 $ GeV/$c$. We compared the results obtained by centrality bin width correction (CBWC) using charged reference particle multiplicity with CBWC done using impact parameter bins. It was found that at low energies the centrality resolution for determining the collision centrality using charged particle multiplicities is not good enough to reduce the initial volume fluctuations effect for higher-order cumulant analysis. New methods need to be developed to classify events with high centrality resolution for heavy-ion collisions at low energies. Finally, we observed that the formation of deuteron will suppress the higher-order cumulants and correlation functions of protons and is found to be similar to the efficiency effect. This work can serve as a noncritical baseline for the QCD critical point search at the high baryon density region.

Abstract:As one of the possible signals for the whereabouts of the critical point on the QCD phase diagram, recently, the multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions have aroused much attention. It is a crucial observation of the Beam Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In this work, we investigate the centrality dependence of the multiplicity fluctuations regarding the recent measurements from STAR Collaboration. By employing a hydrodynamical approach, the present study is dedicated to the noncritical aspects of the phenomenon. To be specific, in addition to the thermal fluctuations, finite volume corrections, and resonance decay at the freeze-out surface, the model is focused on the properties of the hydrodynamic expansion of the system and the event-by-event initial fluctuations. It is understood that the real signal of the critical point can only be obtained after appropriately subtracting the background; the latter is investigated in the present work. Besides the experimental data, our results are also compared to those of the hadronic resonance gas, as well as the transport models.

Abstract:Fluctuations of the baryon number in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are a promising observable to explore the structure of the QCD phase diagram. The cumulant ratios in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies ($\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} < 7$ GeV) have not been studied to date. We investigate the effects of mean field potential and clustering on the cumulant ratios of baryon and proton number distributions in Au+Au collisions at beam energy of 1.23 GeV$/$nucleon as measured by the HADES Collaboration at GSI. Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and the JAM model are used to calculate the cumulants with different mean field potentials. It is found that the cumulant ratios are strongly time dependent. At the early stage, the effects of the potentials on the fluctuations of the particle multiplicity in momentum space are relatively weak. The mean fields enhance the fluctuations during the expansion stage, especially for small rapidity acceptance windows. The enhancement of cumulant ratios for free protons is strongly suppressed as compared to that for all baryons. The mean field potentials and the clustering play an important role for the measured cumulant ratios at intermediate energy.

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis of centrality dependence of event-by-event fluctuations of pseudo-rapidity multiplicity combination in terms of strongly intensive quantity has been carried out in 22 Ne-emulsion interactions at 4.1 AGeV/c. The ensemble of events has been categorized into four centrality classes based on the total charges or sum of the charges of non-interacting projectile fragments (Q). Notably, significant fluctuations in pseudo-rapidity are observed across different centrality ranges. Strongly intensive quantity increases with decreasing centrality while increases weakly with decreasing centrality up to Q = 4. Our study reflects that change in the strongly intensive quantity and does not depend on the number of analyzed events in each class. Experimental results are compared with the analysis of MC-RAND events.

Abstract:A heavy-ion collision experiment has a wide range of physical observables that are dependent on the initial geometry. Centrality is used to describe the initial geometry of collisions in experiments. Spectator fragments, or pieces of the colliding nuclei that were not involved in the collision, can be used to determine centrality. In this work, we discuss how processes of spectator fragmentation may impact the centrality determination procedure. These effects are demonstrated using the DCM-QGSM-SMM model, which realistically reproduces fragmentation processes, and the published results of the NA61/SHINE experiment.

Abstract:The energy and centrality dependence of the charged multiplicity per participant nucleon is shown to be able to differentiate between final state saturation and fixed scale perturbative QCD models of initial entropy production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The energy dependence is shown to test the nuclear enhancement of the minijet component of the initial conditions, while the centrality dependence provides a key test of whether gluon saturation is reached at RHIC energies. The HIJING model predicts that the rapidity density per participant increases with centrality, while the saturation model prediction is essentially independent of centrality.

Abstract:By using the recent spatially dependent nuclear PDF set EPS09 s, we investigated the centrality-dependent Cold Nuclear Matter（CNM） effects for neutral π, η mesons and inclusive jets at RHIC in d+Au collisions and at LHC in p+Pb collisions. The nuclear modification factors as functions of transverse momentum are plotted at different centralities bins respectively. At all fixed centralities, the nuclear modification factors show no significant suppressions,contrast to the strong suppressions observed for central Au+Au collisions. Our results are consistent with the PHENIX preliminary Data in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions. The LHC experimental Data also support our predictions for both single inclusive hadron and inclusive jets productions in central p+Pb collisions. And the centrality dependence of the nuclear suppressions for all the observations in our calculations are lower than the RHIC and LHC Data.
Multiplicity fluctuations and rapidity correlations in ultracentral proton-nucleus collisions

Abstract:A collision between a proton and a heavy nucleus at ultrarelativistic energy creates particles whose rapidity distribution is asymmetric, with more particles emitted in the direction of the nucleus than in the direction of the proton. This asymmetry becomes more pronounced as the centrality estimator, defined from the energy deposited in a calorimeter, increases. We argue that for high-multiplicity collisions, the variation of the impact parameter plays a negligible role, and that the fluctuations of the multiplicity and of the centrality estimator are dominated by quantum fluctuations, whose probability distribution can be well approximated by a correlated gamma distribution. We show that this simple model reproduces existing data, and we make quantitative predictions for collisions in the $0-0.1\%$ and $0-0.01\%$ centrality windows. We argue that by repeating the same analysis with a different centrality estimator, one can obtain direct information about the rapidity decorrelation in particle production.

Centrality Manipulation in Exclusive Photoproduction at the Electron-Ion Collider

Abstract:In the context of future electron-ion collision experiments, particularly the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and the Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC), investigating exclusive photoproduction processes is of paramount importance. These processes offer a unique opportunity to probe the gluon structure of nuclei across a broad range of Bjorken-$x$, facilitating measurements of nuclear shadowing and searches for gluon saturation and/or the color glass condensate. This paper explores the potential of utilizing neutron tagging from Coulomb excitation of nuclei to effectively determine centrality for exclusive photoproduction in electron-ion collisions. By developing the equivalent photon approximation for fast-moving electrons, this work incorporates a coordinate-space-dependent photon flux distribution, elucidating the relationship between the photon transverse momentum distribution and collision impact parameter. Leveraging spatial information from the photon flux, the differential cross section for Coulomb excitation of nuclei is derived. Our calculations demonstrate that neutron tagging can significantly alter impact parameter distributions, thereby providing a robust method for centrality manipulation in electron-ion collisions. This study contributes essential baseline and strategies for exploring the impact parameter dependence of exclusive photoproduction, offering novel insights for experimental design and data analysis. Ultimately, it provides additional information to better visualize the gluon distribution within the nucleus.
