Abstract:There has been a burgeoning Fintech literature in the past years, especially on cryptocurrencies. However, there is lack of research handling cryptocurrencies in a mainstream macroeconomic model. To bridge the gap, we develop a model for Bitcoin-like cryptocurrency as risky and costly bubbles in an infinite-horizon production economy. This model is consistent with the following facts: (1) the surging Bitcoin market presents enormous volatility, (2) its price dynamics are significantly sensitive to both market sentiment and policy stances. Entrepreneurial firms choose to hold Bitcoins as liquid assets to buffer idiosyncratic investment distortions. The intrinsically worthless Bitcoins can emerge as rational bubbles when the market sentiment is optimistic enough. On the one hand, bubbly Bitcoins provide market liquidity to facilitate investment in the real sector, while on the other hand, they deteriorate the investment efficiency and crowd out aggregate production. Our quantitative exercise produces various cyclical features of Bitcoin bubbles and find that the collapse of Bitcoin bubbles can improve social welfare by decreasing distortion-driven real investment.

In this paper, we examine the effect of explosive behaviors in the Bitcoin market on the top 10 largest stock markets of developed and emerging countries. The daily dataset, including the Dow Jones Industrial Index (DJIA), Nasdaq (NSQ), Shanghai Composite Index (SSE), Nikkei 225 (N225), Hang Seng Index (HSI), Shenzhen Composite Index (SZSE), Euronext Amsterdam Index (AEX), London Stock Exchange (LSE), Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), spans July 21, 2010, to December 9, 2022. We first investigate the existence of explosive price behaviors using the bubble detection test of Phillips and Shi and the results provide evidence of multiple bubble episodes, coinciding with the monetary policy actions of the FED and ECB. Then, we address the question of whether the explosive behaviors detected affect the variance of equity returns by employing a GARCH model. The impact is negative, albeit its magnitude and significance vary among stock indices.

Abstract:The bubbles and spikes in cryptocurrency prices increase considerably the risk on investments in these assets. In the traditional time series literature bubbles are viewed as nonstationary and non-estimable components of a process. In this paper, we adopt a different approach and consider the bubbles as inherent features of a strictly stationary causal-noncausal (mixed) Vector Autoregressive (VAR) process. This approach allows us to model and estimate the common bubbles and spikes in cryptocurrency prices. It also provides us linear combinations of cryptocurrencies that eliminate common bubbles analogously to the cointegrating vectors eliminating common trends in unit root processes. They are used to build cryptocurrency portfolios immune to the risk of common bubbles that ensure stable investment strategies. The mixed VAR model is estimated from the US Dollar prices of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Stellar over the period 2017–2019. We document the common bubbles and illustrate the behavior of bubble-free portfolios.

Abstract:Financial bubbles have always been a topic of long-term concern for economists. Understanding bubble phenomenon and dating the period of bubbles in real time can provide an early warning diagnosis for financial bubbles and help regulatory authorities to control it and maintain market order. The generalized sup ADF (GSADF) and backward sup ADF (BSADF) tests with flexible window width can effectively detect and date periodically collapsing bubbles in real time. Based on the financial present value model, this paper applies right-tail recursive ADF test to test multiple bubbles in China's multi-level stock market. Unlike the other researches in China, the ratios of the real stock prices' natural logarithm to the real dividends' natural logarithm are used for our testing instead of stock price index. Empirical results show that there are 8 bubbles in the Main-Board Market, 6 bubbles in the Small and Medium Enterprises Board (SMEs), and 4 bubbles in the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM). These bubbles are liquidity-driven and presuppose a loose credit cycle, with the exception of bubbles in 2014-2015. The frequent emergence of bubbles in a short time indicates that China's stock market is still emerging market. In addition, frequent fluctuations imply there is a serious "herd effect" and a lack of monitoring mechanism for bubble risk. This study not only enrich the real-time dynamic research on periodical bubbles of China's stock market, but also provide an empirical reference for investors' investment choices, financial decisions of listed companies and warning mechanism of regulatory authorities.

Abstract:This study investigates speculative bubbles in the cryptocurrency market and factors affecting bubbles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our results indicate that each cryptocurrency covered in the study presented bubbles. Moreover, we found that explosive behavior in one currency leads to explosivity in other cryptocurrencies. During the pandemic, herd behavior was evident among investors; however, this diminishes during bubbles, indicating that bubbles are not explained by herd behavior. Regarding cryptocurrency and market-specific factors, we found that Google Trends and volume are positively associated with predicting speculative bubbles in time-series and panel probit regressions. Hence, investors should exercise caution when investing in cryptocurrencies and follow both crypto currency and market-related factors to estimate bubbles. Alternative liquidity, volatility, and Google Trends measures are used for robustness analysis and yield similar results. Overall, our results suggest that bubble behavior is common in the cryptocurrency market, contradicting the efficient market hypothesis.
Speculation or currency? Multi-scale analysis of cryptocurrencies-The case of Bitcoin

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel two-stage VMD-based multi-scale regression to analyze various cryptocurrency at-tributes that are still unclear in the existing literature. In the first stage, Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) is used to decompose the cryptocurrency prices into low, medium and high frequency modes with different attributes. In the second stage, the VMD-based multi-scale regression is proposed for these modes with selected explanatory variables. Using the proposed framework, we focus on analyzing the multiple attributes of daily Bitcoin price data as a case study. Empirical results indicate that the low-frequency mode has specific currency or long-term investment characteristics, unlike the short/medium-term investment attributes for the medium-frequency mode, while the high-frequency mode represents some speculation. Some events merely affect a single frequency mode, but others impact all frequency modes. The results of events analysis based on VMD could enhance the identification of the multiple attributes of Bitcoin. Our findings are insightful for future regulation and management of virtual currencies.

Abstract:Monte Carlo evidence [Evans (1991)] indicates that when speculative bubbles are collapsible, the traditional cointegration approach based on unit root tests has some serious drawbacks. We propose in this paper an alternative approach to test such bubbles. We demonstrate that the suggested test has some advantages over the traditional unit root based tests, especially for bubbles that are collapsible. Properties of the proposed procedure are investigated. Extensions and generalizations of this procedure are also studied. The testing procedure is applied to market indexes in the U.S. and Hong Kong. The proposed procedures provide useful complements to existing bubble tests.

Abstract:This study investigates whether multiple bubbles exist in the copper price on the basis of the Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) approach (Phillips et al., 2013). This technique delivers date-stamping strategies for the emergence as well as collapse of explosive bubble episodes and is best suited for practical application to time series. The results reveal that four explosive bubbles are detected over the period of 1980-2019 when copper price deviates from fundamental value. Besides, this finding is in accordance with the asset pricing model (Gürkaynak, 2008), which generally considers both fundamental and bubble components in the presence of asset prices. Based on the empirical results, the multiple emergence and collapse of multiple price bubbles are attributed to speculation, depreciation of the U.S. dollar, an imbalance between supply and demand, and financial crises. Policymakers should actively recognize bubble episodes and monitor their evolution, which could be conducive to achieving the effective stabilization of the international copper price. To reduce excess price fluctuations and explosive copper bubbles, authorities should impose restrictions on excessive speculative behaviors under extreme market conditions.

Abstract:Limited capacity in processing transactions presents one of the most fundamental technical challenges to blockchain-based financial applications (e.g., Bitcoin). We argue that this property also has profound impacts on asset prices by limiting the speed and scale at which capital can flow, which may distort prices in two important and distinctive ways: 1) to limit the speed of information dissemination in normal days, which generates momentum; and 2) to give rise to sharp price shifts and subsequent reversals in hightension periods, which leads to bubbles and crashes. Accordingly, we expect that blockchain-based financial assets—e.g., cryptocurrencies—may be vulnerable to both momentum and bubbles and that the two types of price distortions can be largely exclusive. Based on a sample of 1392 cryptocurrencies, we find that momentum strategy works for normal-stage cryptocurrencies but not for bubble-stage ones. Moreover, contrary to equity-momentum, crypto-momentum is not associated with higher crash risk. If anything, crash risk is associated with, and can be predicted by, the bubble stage of cryptocurrencies. Our results shed new lights on blockchain-based Fintech products and services.

Abstract:As cryptocurrencies gain popularity and credibility, marketplaces for cryptocurrencies are growing in importance. Understanding the dynamics of these markets can help to assess how viable the cryptocurrnency ecosystem is and how design choices affect market behavior. One existential threat to cryptocurrencies is dramatic fluctuations in traders' willingness to buy or sell. Using a novel experimental methodology, we conducted an online experiment to study how susceptible traders in these markets are to peer influence from trading behavior. We created bots that executed over one hundred thousand trades costing less than a penny each in 217 cryptocurrencies over the course of six months. We find that individual "buy" actions led to short-term increases in subsequent buy-side activity hundreds of times the size of our interventions. From a design perspective, we note that the design choices of the exchange we study may have promoted this and other peer influence effects, which highlights the potential social and economic impact of HCI in the design of digital institutions.

Abstract:The advert of cryptocurrency era is signified by the luanch of Bitcoin, which has been considered as a milestone event. Ever since its emergence, Bitcoin has experienced rapid price increase along with great price fluctuations. This paper aims to explore the beginning and the culmination of possible speculative bubbles the Bitcoin market. Based on the daily closing price of Bitstamp, a major Bitcoin exchange platform, from September 13, 2011 to October 12, 2020, this paper adopts GSADF (generalized sup augmented Dickey–Fuller) to explore the existence of the bubble in the Bitcoin market, estimate the time of emergence and collapse of the bubble, investigate the causes of the bubbles based on its time order, and attempts to put forward some policy suggestions. Through this study, we have found that: (1) There are a lot of speculative bubbles. During the research period, there were a total of four long bubbles (i.e. 2013.01.25–2013.04.05; 2013.11.05–2013.12.10; 2017.04.27–2017.07.05; 2017.07.15 –2018.01.09) and four short bubbles (2016.06.08–2016.06.18; 2016.12.30–2017.01.15; 2017.02.22 –2017.03.07; 2019.06.19 –2019.06.25). (2) The emergence and burst of bubbles were mostly related to the occurrence of relevant events and policies. (3) Bitcoin market is far from mature. A key policy risk triggering the speculative behavior is policy announcement. The prominent innovation of this paper is that the latest developed bubble detection method GSADF has been employed in the Bitcoin market. This method can detect the existence of multiple Bitcoin bubbles and their durations.

Abstract:Periodically collapsing bubbles, if they exist, induce asymmetric dynamics in asset prices. In this article, I show that unit root quantile autoregressive models can approximate such dynamics by allowing the largest autoregressive root to take values below unity at low quantiles, which correspond to price crashes, and above unity at upper quantiles, that correspond to bubble expansions. On this basis, I employ two unit root tests based on quantile autoregressions to detect bubbles. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the two tests have good size and power properties, and can outperform recursive least‐squares‐based tests. The merits of the two tests are further illustrated in three empirical applications that examine Bitcoin, US equity and US housing markets. In the empirical applications, special attention is given to the issue of controlling for economic fundamentals. The estimation results indicate the presence of asymmetric dynamics that closely match those of the simulated bubble processes.

Using a generalized Metcalfe’s law based on network properties, a fundamental value is quantified and shown to be heavily exceeded, on at least four occasions, by bubbles that grow and burst. In these bubbles, we detect a universal super-exponential unsustainable growth. We model this universal pattern with the Log-Periodic Power Law Singularity (LPPLS) model, which parsimoniously captures diverse positive feedback phenomena, such as herding and imitation. The LPPLS model is shown to provide an ex-ante warning of market instabilities, quantifying a high crash hazard and probabilistic bracket of the crash time consistent with the actual corrections; although, as always, the precise time and trigger (which straw breaks the camel’s back) being exogenous and unpredictable. Looking forward, our analysis identifies a substantial but not unprecedented overvaluation in the price of bitcoin, suggesting many months of volatile sideways bitcoin prices ahead (from the time of writing, March 2018).

Abstract:We present a new approach to identifying asset price bubbles based on options data. Given their forward-looking nature, options are ideal instruments with which to investigate market expectations about the future evolution of asset prices, which are key to understanding price bubbles. By exploiting the di˙erential pricing between put and call options, we can detect and quantify bubbles in the prices of underlying asset. We apply our methodology to two stock market indexes, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100, and two technology stocks, Amazon and Facebook, over the 2014-2018 sample period. We find that, while indexes exhibit rare and modest bubbles, Amazon and Facebook show more frequent and much larger bubbles. Since our approach can be implemented in real time, it is useful to both policy-makers and investors.
The digital traces of bubbles: feedback cycles between socio-economic signals in the Bitcoin economy

Abstract:What is the role of social interactions in the creation of price bubbles? Answering this question requires obtaining collective behavioural traces generated by the activity of a large number of actors. Digital currencies offer a unique possibility to measure socio-economic signals from such digital traces. Here, we focus on Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency. Bitcoin has experienced periods of rapid increase in exchange rates (price) followed by sharp decline; we hypothesise that these fluctuations are largely driven by the interplay between different social phenomena. We thus quantify four socio-economic signals about Bitcoin from large data sets: price on on-line exchanges, volume of word-of-mouth communication in on-line social media, volume of information search, and user base growth. By using vector autoregression, we identify two positive feedback loops that lead to price bubbles in the absence of exogenous stimuli: one driven by word of mouth, and the other by new Bitcoin adopters. We also observe that spikes in information search, presumably linked to external events, precede drastic price declines. Understanding the interplay between the socio-economic signals we measured can lead to applications beyond cryptocurrencies to other phenomena which leave digital footprints, such as on-line social network usage.

Abstract:Recent work on econometric detection mechanisms has shown the effectiveness of recursive procedures in identifying and dating financial bubbles in real time. These procedures are useful as warning alerts in surveillance strategies conducted by central banks and fiscal regulators with real‐time data. Use of these methods over long historical periods presents a more serious econometric challenge due to the complexity of the nonlinear structure and break mechanisms that are inherent in multiple‐bubble phenomena within the same sample period. To meet this challenge, this article develops a new recursive flexible window method that is better suited for practical implementation with long historical time series. The method is a generalized version of the sup augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) test of Phillips et al. (“Explosive behavior in the 1990s NASDAQ: When did exuberance escalate asset values?” International Economic Review 52 (2011), 201–26; PWY) and delivers a consistent real‐time date‐stamping strategy for the origination and termination of multiple bubbles. Simulations show that the test significantly improves discriminatory power and leads to distinct power gains when multiple bubbles occur. An empirical application of the methodology is conducted on S&P 500 stock market data over a long historical period from January 1871 to December 2010. The new approach successfully identifies the well‐known historical episodes of exuberance and collapses over this period, whereas the strategy of PWY and a related cumulative sum (CUSUM) dating procedure locate far fewer episodes in the same sample range.

Abstract:We focus on the existence of bubbles in fan tokens, utilizing the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) and Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) tests. We use daily closing prices of the top 20 fan tokens according to their market capitalization, along with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Chiliz. The evidence from the GSADF test results indicates that the prices of 13 out of 20 fan tokens and the three cryptocurrencies have explosive periods associated with bubbles. Our results also show that the percentage of bubble days is between 0 % and 5 % for all fan tokens. Among the 13 fan tokens exhibiting bubble behavior in their prices, nine have multiple sub-periods associated with bubbles, while only four tokens have a single sub-period with explosive prices. Bubbles in token prices are short-lived bubbles; most last for a few days. As a robustness analysis, we also perform LPPLS (Log-Periodic Power Law Singularity), providing similar results. Further analysis shows that trading volume, fan token return, Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU), Daily Infectious Disease Equity Market Volatility (EMVID) are positively associated with the presence of bubbles in fan token prices, while oil return is negatively associated with bubbles.

Abstract:By investigating nonfungible tokens (NFTs), we provide the first systematic study of retail investor behavior through asset bubbles. Given that NFTs are recorded in public blockchains, we are able to track investor behavior over time, leading to the identification of numerous price run-ups and crashes. Our study reveals that agent-level variables, such as investor sophistication, heterogeneity, and wash trading, in addition to aggregate variables, such as volatility, price acceleration, and turnover, significantly predict bubble formation and price crashes. We find that sophisticated investors consistently outperform others and exhibit characteristics consistent with superior information and skills, supporting the narrative surrounding asset pricing bubbles.

Abstract:SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. A crucial aspect of every experiment is the formulation of hypotheses prior to data collection. In this paper, we use a simulation-based approach to generate synthetic data and formulate the hypotheses for our market experiment and calibrate its laboratory design. In this experiment, we extend well-established laboratory market models to the two-asset case, accounting at the same time for heterogeneous artificial traders with multi-asset strategies. Our main objective is to identify the role played in the price-bubble formation by both self-impact (i.e., how trading orders affect the price dynamics) and cross-impact (i.e., the price changes in one asset caused by the trading activity on other assets). To this end, we vary across treatments the possibility of traders of diverting their capital from one asset to the other, thereby artificially changing the amount of liquidity in the market. To simulate different scenarios for the synthetic data generation, we vary along with the liquidity the type of trading strategies of our artificial traders. Our results suggest that an increase in liquidity increases the cross-impact, especially when agents are market-neutral. Self-impact, however, remains significant and constant for all model specifications.
