Abstract:Nigeria's remarkable information and communication technology (ICT) journey spans decades, playing a pivotal role in economic sustainability, especially as the nation celebrates its Republic at Sixty. This paper provides an overview of Nigeria's ICT journey, underscoring its central role in sustainable economic prosperity. We explore the potential of artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT), revealing the remarkable opportunities on the horizon. We stress the urgency of achieving digital inclusivity, bridging the urban-rural gap, and reducing the technological divide, all of which are critical as Nigeria marks its sixtieth year. We intend to prove the invaluable opportunities of ICT for policymakers, business leaders, and educational institutes as Nigeria looks towards enduring economic development in this digital age. Specifically, we envision a dynamic landscape where emerging technologies are set to redefine industries, supercharge economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for every Nigerian.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?

This paper mainly discusses the journey of Nigeria in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and its impact on sustainable economic development. Nigeria's ICT journey has undergone significant transformations, from inadequate infrastructure and access restrictions to the liberalization of the telecommunications industry, which has facilitated the entry of private enterprises into the market. The government has promoted local content development, innovation, and digital inclusiveness through the formulation of national ICT policies. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things have brought huge opportunities.

The article emphasizes the importance of digital inclusiveness, narrowing the urban-rural divide, and reducing the technological gap, particularly as Nigeria celebrates its 60th independence anniversary. The government's efforts have attracted domestic and foreign investments, created high-skilled jobs, and promoted the development of startup companies. Nigeria's ICT strategy aims to leverage these technologies to drive sustainable economic development, especially in the fields of education, health, agriculture, and commerce.

Furthermore, mobile communications have played a key role in Nigeria's ICT transformation, with profound impacts on the economy and society by improving internet access, promoting financial inclusiveness, and developing e-commerce. The government has also implemented various initiatives to support the startup ecosystem, including establishing technology centers, youth innovation programs, and science parks.

Currently, Nigeria's ICT landscape continues to evolve, with the introduction of 5G technology expected to further enhance connectivity speed and drive innovation across industries. The government encourages private sector involvement through policies and partnerships, attracting foreign investments, and strengthening digital infrastructure, digital literacy, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit through the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS).
