Abstract:In the present work, we exhibit a class of self-descriptive sequences that can be explicitly computed and whose frequencies are known. In particular, as a corollary of our main result, we prove that the sequence introduced in \citeBJM23 has the expected frequencies of occurrences.

Abstract:The celebrated Thue-Morse sequence, or the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence (A010060 in the OEIS), has a number of interesting properties and is a rich source to many (counter)examples. We introduce two different square-free sequences on three letters with one of them is equivalent (up-to permutations of letters) to Thue's original square-free sequence on three letters. Then we use them to introduce an explicit method to construct infinitely many number of recurrent points in ${\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{N}}}$ whose orbit closures under the shift map is minimal, uncountable, and for any two distinct such points their orbit closures are disjoint.

Abstract:The first author recently introduced an integer sequence now numbered A355519 in OEIS. This sequence arose from counting bracket tournaments; its study evokes the analysis of the Catalan triangle (sequence A009766 in OEIS) and the related Catalan numbers, sequence A000108 in OEIS. We therefore introduce a general construction that places these sequences on the same footing and suggests many new integer sequences. We provide code for performing this construction and a lengthy list of examples. This construction determines a function from input sequences to output sequences. Some of the resulting output sequences are in OEIS and others are not.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce saturation and semisaturation functions of sequences, and we prove a number of fundamental results about these functions. Given any forbidden sequence $u$ with $r$ distinct letters, we say that a sequence $s$ on a given alphabet is $u$-saturated if $s$ is $r$-sparse, $u$-free, and adding any letter from the alphabet to $s$ violates $r$-sparsity or induces a copy of $u$. We say that $s$ is $u$-semisaturated if $s$ is $r$-sparse and adding any letter from the alphabet to $s$ violates $r$-sparsity or induces a new copy of $u$. Let the saturation function $\operatorname{Sat}(u, n)$ denote the minimum possible length of a $u$-saturated sequence on an alphabet of size $n$, and let the semisaturation function $\operatorname{Ssat}(u, n)$ denote the minimum possible length of a $u$-semisaturated sequence on an alphabet of size $n$. For alternating sequences of the form $a b a b \dots$, we determine the saturation functions up to a multiplicative factor of $2$, and we determine the semisaturation functions up to the leading term. We demonstrate a dichotomy for the semisaturation functions of sequences: for any sequence $u$, we have $\operatorname{Ssat}(u, n) = O(1)$ if and only if the first letter and the last letter of $u$ each occur exactly once, and otherwise we have $\operatorname{Ssat}(u, n) = \Theta(n)$. For the saturation function, we show that every sequence $u$ has either $\operatorname{Sat}(u, n) \ge n$ for every positive integer $n$ or $\operatorname{Sat}(u, n) = O(1)$. We prove that every sequence $u$ in which every letter occurs at least twice has $\operatorname{Sat}(u, n) \ge n$, and we show that $\operatorname{Sat}(u, n) = \Theta(n)$ or $\operatorname{Sat}(u, n) = O(1)$ for every sequence $u$ with $2$ distinct letters.

Abstract:We define a new class of ternary sequences that are 2-balanced. These sequences are obtained by colouring of Sturmian sequences. We show that the class contains sequences of any given letter frequencies. We provide an upper bound on factor and abelian complexity of these sequences. Using the interpretation by rectangle exchange transformation, we prove that for almost all triples of letter frequencies, the upper bound on factor and abelian complexity is reached. The bound on factor complexity is given using a number-theoretical function which we compute explicitly for a class of parameters.

Jamison sequences in countably infinite discrete abelian groups

Abstract:We extend the definition of Jamison sequences in the context of topological abelian groups. Then we study such sequences when the abelian group is discrete and countably infinite. An arithmetical characterization of such sequences is obtained, extending the result of Badea and Grivaux about Jamison sequences of integers. In particular, we prove that the sequence consisting of all elements of the group is a Jamison sequence. In the opposite, a sequence which generates a subgroup of infinite index in the group is never a Jamison sequence.

Abstract:For a fixed integer $k$, we define a sequence $A_k=(a_k(n))_{n\geq0}$ and a corresponding sparse subsequence $S_k$ using the cardinality of the $n$-th symmetric power of the set $\{1,2,\ldots, k\}$. For $k\in\{2,\dots,8\}$, we find recursive formulas for $S_k$, and show that the values $a_{k}(0)$, $a_{k}(1)$, and $a_{k}(3)$ are sufficient for constructing $A_{k}$.

Synchronization of Bernoulli sequences on shared letters

Abstract:The topic of this paper is the distributed and incremental generation of long executions of concurrent systems, uniformly or more generally with weights associated to elementary actions. Synchronizing sequences of letters on alphabets sharing letters are known to produce a trace in the concurrency theoretic sense, i.e., a labeled partially ordered set. We study the probabilistic aspects by considering the synchronization of Bernoulli sequences of letters, under the light of Bernoulli and uniform measures recently introduced for trace monoids. We introduce two algorithms that produce random traces, using only local random primitives. We thoroughly study some specific examples, the path model and the ring model, both of arbitrary size. For these models, we show how to generate any Bernoulli distributed random traces, which includes the case of uniform generation.

Abstract:What is Sequence Algebra? This is a question that any teacher or student of mathematics or computer science can engage with. Sequences are in Calculus, Combinatorics, Statistics and Computation. They are foundational, a step up from number arithmetic. Sequence operations are easy to implement from scratch (in Haskell) and afford a wide variety of testing and experimentation. When bits and pieces of sequence algebra are pulled together from the literature, there emerges a claim for status as a substantial pre-analysis topic. Here we set the stage by bringing together a variety of sequence algebra concepts for the first time in one paper. This provides a novel economical overview, intended to invite a broad mathematical audience to cast an eye over the subject. A complete, yet succinct, basic implementation of sequence operations is presented, ready to play with. The implementation also serves as a benchmark for introducing Haskell by mathematical example.

Abstract:Sequence theories are an extension of theories of strings with an infinite alphabet of letters, together with a corresponding alphabet theory (e.g. linear integer arithmetic). Sequences are natural abstractions of extendable arrays, which permit a wealth of operations including append, map, split, and concatenation. In spite of the growing amount of tool support for theories of sequences by leading SMT-solvers, little is known about the decidability of sequence theories, which is in stark contrast to the state of the theories of strings. We show that the decidable theory of strings with concatenation and regular constraints can be extended to the world of sequences over an alphabet theory that forms a Boolean algebra, while preserving decidability. In particular, decidability holds when regular constraints are interpreted as parametric automata (which extend both symbolic automata and variable automata), but fails when interpreted as register automata (even over the alphabet theory of equality). When length constraints are added, the problem is Turing-equivalent to word equations with length (and regular) constraints. Similar investigations are conducted in the presence of symbolic transducers, which naturally model sequence functions like map, split, filter, etc. We have developed a new sequence solver, SeCo, based on parametric automata, and show its efficacy on two classes of benchmarks: (i) invariant checking on array-manipulating programs and parameterized systems, and (ii) benchmarks on symbolic register automata.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a Morse sequence, which provides a simple and effective approach to discrete Morse theory. A Morse sequence is a sequence composed solely of two elementary operations, that is, expansions (the inverse of a collapse), and fillings (the inverse of a perforation). We show that a Morse sequence may be seen as an alternative way to represent the gradient vector field of an arbitrary discrete Morse function. We also show that it is possible, in a straightforward manner, to make a link between Morse sequences and different kinds of Morse functions. At last, we introduce maximal Morse sequences, which formalize two basic schemes for building a Morse sequence from an arbitrary simplicial complex.

Abstract:We describe new, simple, recursive methods of construction for orientable sequences over an arbitrary finite alphabet, i.e. periodic sequences in which any sub-sequence of n consecutive elements occurs at most once in a period in either direction. In particular we establish how two variants of a generalised Lempel homomorphism can be used to recursively construct such sequences, generalising previous work on the binary case. We also derive an upper bound on the period of an orientable sequence.

Abstract:Ascent sequences have received a lot of attention in recent years in connection with (2 + 2)-free posets and other combinatorial objects. Here, we first show bijectively that analogous repetition sequences are counted by the Bell numbers, and 021-avoiding repetition sequences by the Catalan numbers. Then we adapt a bijection of Chen et al and use it along with the "symbolic" method of Flajolet to find the 4-variable generating function for 021-avoiding ascent sequences by length, number of 0's, number of isolated 0's, and number of runs of 2 or more 0's. We deduce that 021-avoiding ascent sequences that have no consecutive 0's (resp. no isolated 0's) both satisfy a Catalan-like recurrence, differing only in initial conditions, and give a bijective proof for the case of no consecutive 0's. Lastly, we show that 021-avoiding descent sequences are equinumerous with same-size $UUDU$-avoiding Dyck paths.

Abstract:This article presents proof that the reverse of the Prefer Max De Bruijn sequence can be expanded into an infinite De Bruijn sequence by increasing the size of the alphabet. Furthermore, we show that every De Bruijn sequence possessing this characteristic exhibits behavior similar to that of the reverse of the Prefer Max De Bruijn sequence.

Alternating Parity Weak Sequencing

Abstract:A subset $S$ of a group $(G,+)$ is $t$-weakly sequenceable if there is an ordering $(y_1, \ldots, y_k)$ of its elements such that the partial sums~$s_0, s_1, \ldots, s_k$, given by $s_0 = 0$ and $s_i = \sum_{j=1}^i y_j$ for $1 \leq i \leq k$, satisfy $s_i \neq s_j$ whenever and $1 \leq |i-j|\leq t$. In [10] it was proved that if the order of a group is $pe$ then all sufficiently large subsets of the non-identity elements are $t$-weakly sequenceable when $p > 3$ is prime, $e \leq 3$ and $t \leq 6$. Inspired by this result, we show that, if $G$ is the semidirect product of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the subset $S$ is balanced, then $S$ admits, regardless of its size, an alternating parity $t$-weak sequencing whenever $p > 3$ is prime and $t \leq 8$. A subset of $G$ is balanced if it contains the same number of even elements and odd elements and an alternating parity ordering alternates even and odd elements. Then using a hybrid approach that combines both Ramsey theory and the probabilistic method we also prove, for groups $G$ that are semidirect products of a generic (non necessarily abelian) group $N$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$, that all sufficiently large balanced subsets of the non-identity elements admit an alternating parity $t$-weak sequencing. The same procedure works also for studying the weak sequenceability for generic sufficiently large (not necessarily balanced) sets. Here we have been able to prove that, if the size of a subset $S$ of a group $G$ is large enough and if $S$ does not contain $0$, then $S$ is $t$-weakly sequenceable.
