Abstract:X 1822-371 is an eclipsing binary system with a period close to 5.57 hr and an orbital period derivative $\dot{P}_{\rm orb}$ of 1.42(3)$\times 10^{-10}$ s s$^{-1}$. The extremely high value of its $\dot{P}_{\rm orb}$ is compatible with a super-Eddington mass transfer rate from the companion star and, consequently, an intrinsic luminosity at the Eddington limit. The source is also an X-ray pulsar, it shows a spin frequency of 1.69 Hz and is in a spin-up phase with a spin frequency derivative of $7.4 \times 10^{-12}$ Hz s$^{-1}$. Assuming a luminosity at the Eddington limit, a neutron star magnetic field strength of $B = 8 \times 10^{10}$ G is estimated. However, a direct measure of $B$ could be obtained observing a CRSF in the energy spectrum. Analysis of \textit{XMM-Newton} data suggested the presence of a cyclotron line at 0.73 keV, with an estimated magnetic field strength of $B=(8.8 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{10}$ G. Here we analyze the 0.3-50 keV broadband spectrum of X 1822-371 combining a 0.3-10 keV NICER spectrum and a 4.5-50 keV \textit{NuSTAR} spectrum to investigate the presence of a cyclotron absorption line and the complex continuum emission spectrum. The NICER spectrum confirms the presence of a cyclotron line at 0.66 keV. The continuum emission is modeled with a Comptonized component, a thermal component associated with the presence of an accretion disk truncated at the magnetospheric radius of 105 km and a reflection component from the disk blurred by relativistic effects. We confirm the presence of a cyclotron line at 0.66 keV inferring a NS magnetic field of $B = (7.9\pm 0.5) \times 10^{10}$ G and suggesting that the Comptonized component originates in the accretion columns.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to confirm whether there are cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSF) in X 1822 - 371. Specifically, by analyzing the spectral data of NICER and NuSTAR, the author aims to verify the existence of the cyclotron line at 0.73 keV previously observed in the XMM - Newton data of X 1822 - 371, and further estimate the magnetic field strength of the neutron star.
### Background and Objectives
X 1822 - 371 is a low - mass X - ray binary system with an orbit having a period of about 5.57 hours. The neutron star in this system behaves as an X - ray pulsar, with a rotation frequency of about 1.69 Hz and is in a state of accelerating rotation. Based on its high orbital period derivative ($\dot{P}_{\text{orb}} = 1.42\times 10^{-10}\, \text{s s}^{-1}$), it is speculated that there may be a super - Eddington mass transfer rate in this system, causing the intrinsic luminosity of the neutron star to be close to the Eddington limit. Assuming that the intrinsic luminosity reaches the Eddington limit, the estimated magnetic field strength of the neutron star is $B\approx 8\times 10^{10}\, \text{G}$.
### Methods
To verify this hypothesis, the author combined the spectral data of NICER (0.3 - 10 keV) and NuSTAR (4.5 - 50 keV) to analyze the broadband spectrum of X 1822 - 371. The specific steps include:
1. **Data Processing**:
- Use NICERDAS v10 and HEASOFT v6.31 tools to process NICER data.
- Use Nupipeline and Nuproducts scripts to process NuSTAR data.
2. **Spectral Fitting**:
- The initial model (Model A) adopted a Comptonized component and two Gaussian emission lines (located at 6.4 keV and 6.96 keV respectively).
- To improve the fitting result, a blackbody radiation component was added (Model B).
- Further attempts were made with different models (Model C, D, E, F) to explain the residuals below 1 keV.
- Finally, an absorption line component (gabs) located at 0.7 keV was added to Model B to form Model G.
### Results
- **Spectral Analysis**:
- The NICER spectrum confirmed the existence of a cyclotron line at 0.66 keV.
- Model G (including the 0.7 keV absorption line) significantly improved the fitting result, with a $\Delta\chi^2$ value of 172.9, and the corresponding magnetic field strength is $B=(7.9\pm 0.5)\times 10^{10}\, \text{G}$.
- **Continuum Modeling**:
- The continuum consists of a Comptonized component, a thermal component related to the accretion disk, and a component reflected from the accretion disk.
- The reflection component is blurred due to relativistic effects.
### Conclusions
The author confirmed the existence of a 0.66 keV cyclotron line in X 1822 - 371 and inferred that the magnetic field strength of the neutron star is $B=(7.9\pm 0.5)\times 10^{10}\, \text{G}$. In addition, the study also showed that the Comptonized component may originate from the accretion column.
