Abstract:Federated Learning (FL) has recently arisen as a revolutionary approach to collaborative training Machine Learning models. According to this novel framework, multiple participants train a global model collaboratively, coordinating with a central aggregator without sharing their local data. As FL gains popularity in diverse domains, security, and privacy concerns arise due to the distributed nature of this solution. Therefore, integrating this strategy with Blockchain technology has been consolidated as a preferred choice to ensure the privacy and security of participants.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper focuses on the issue of privacy protection in blockchain-based federated learning (FL) systems. Federated learning is a novel machine learning approach that allows multiple participants to collaboratively train a global model without sharing their local data, thus protecting user data privacy. However, as FL is widely applied in various fields, its distributed nature brings security and privacy concerns. To address these challenges, researchers have started exploring the integration of blockchain technology with FL to enhance the privacy and security of the system. The decentralized, transaction verification, and data tamper-resistant characteristics of blockchain can effectively address trust issues, data forgery, missing incentive mechanisms, communication security, and compliance issues in FL. This paper provides a comprehensive review of blockchain-enabled FL (Blockchain-Enabled FL) research, analyzing existing architectures, major attacks, and possible countermeasures to ensure privacy in such settings. Furthermore, the paper explores the applications of blockchain-enabled FL in scenarios such as healthcare, industrial internet of things (IIoT), and connected vehicles, and discusses future research directions and unresolved challenges. In summary, this paper aims to address the design and implementation of effective privacy protection strategies in blockchain-based federated learning systems, overcoming security and privacy issues in existing FL systems, and promoting their practical applications in different industries.
