Abstract:We describe the structure of regular codimension $1$ foliations with numerically projectively flat tangent bundle on complex projective manifolds of dimension at least $4$. Along the way, we prove that either the normal bundle of a regular codimension $1$ foliation is pseudo-effective, or its conormal bundle is nef.

Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:We investigate the structure of smooth holomorphic foliations with numerically flat tangent bundles on compact Kähler manifolds. Extending earlier results on non-uniruled projective manifolds by the second and fourth authors, we show that such foliations induce a decomposition of the tangent bundle of the ambient manifold, have leaves uniformized by Euclidean spaces, and have torsion canonical bundle. Additionally, we prove that smooth two-dimensional foliations with numerically trivial canonical bundle on projective manifolds are either isotrivial fibrations or have numerically flat tangent bundles. This in turn implies a global Weinstein splitting theorem for rank-two Poisson structures on projective manifolds. We also derive new Hodge-theoretic conditions for the existence of zeros of Poisson structures on compact Kähler manifolds.

Abstract:This article studies codimension one foliations on projective man-ifolds having a compact leaf (free of singularities). It explores the interplay between Ueda theory (order of flatness of the normal bundle) and the holo-nomy representation (dynamics of the foliation in the transverse direction). We address in particular the following problems: existence of foliation having as a leaf a given hypersurface with topologically torsion normal bundle, global structure of foliations having a compact leaf whose holonomy is abelian (resp. solvable), and factorization results.

Abstract:We show that a singular Riemannian foliation of codimension two on a compact simply-connected Riemannian $(n+2)$-manifold, with regular leaves homeomorphic to the $n$-torus, is given by a smooth effective $n$-torus action. This solves in the negative for the codimension $2$ case a question about the existence of foliations by exotic tori on simply-connected manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we study holomorphic foliations of degree four on complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$, where $n\geq 3$, with a special focus on obtaining a structural theorem for these foliations. Furthermore, for a foliation $\mathcal{F}$ of degree $d\geq 4$ with a sufficiently high $k^{th}$-jet, we prove that either $\mathcal{F}$ is transversely affine outside a compact hypersurface, or $\mathcal{F}$ is transversely projective outside a compact hypersurface, or $\mathcal{F}$ is the pull-back of a foliation on $\mathcal{F}^2$ by a rational map.

Classification of the invariants of foliations by curves of low degree on the three-dimensional projective space

Abstract:We study foliations by curves on the three-dimensional projective space with no isolated singularities, which is equivalent to assuming that the conormal sheaf is locally free. We provide a classification of the topological and algebraic invariants of the conormal sheaves and singular schemes for such foliations by curves, up to degree 3. In particular, we prove that foliations by curves of degree 1 or 2 are contained in a pencil of planes or are Legendrian, and are given by the complete intersection of two codimension one distributions. Furthermore, we prove that the conormal sheaf of a foliation by curves of degree 3 with reduced singular scheme either splits as a sum of line bundles or is an instanton bundle. For degree larger than 3, we focus on two classes of foliations by curves, namely Legendrian foliations and those whose conormal sheaf is a twisted null-correlation bundle. We give characterizations of such foliations, describe their singular schemes and their moduli spaces.

Abstract:Brunella's classification implies that every smooth foliation on a compact complex surface admits a singular transversely projective structure. However, Biswas and Sorin's recent work shows that certain foliations on compact complex surfaces, despite possessing a singular transversely projective structure, do not admit a regular transversely projective structure. Here, we describe the smooth foliations on compact complex surfaces which fail to possess a regular transversely projective structure.

Abstract:We present a new construction of codimension-one foliations from pairs of contact structures in dimension three. This constitutes a converse result to a celebrated theorem of Eliashberg and Thurston on approximations of foliations by contact structures. Under suitable hypotheses on the initial contact pairs, the foliations we construct are taut, allowing us to characterize taut foliations entirely in terms of contact geometry. This viewpoint reveals some surprising flexible phenomena for taut foliations, and provides new insight into the $L$-space conjecture.

Abstract:We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.

Abstract:We construct foliations $\mathcal{F}$ on compact manifolds that are infinitesimally rigid, meaning that their deformation cohomology $H^{1}(\mathcal{F},N\mathcal{F})$ vanishes. Our main result yields examples of infinitesimally rigid Lie foliations with dense leaves. To our knowledge, these are the first examples of infinitesimally rigid Riemannian foliations that are not Hausdorff.

Abstract:We carry out a detailed study of the structure of domains of discontinuity $\Omega_\rho$ in $\mathbb{RP}^3$ of $\text{PSL}_4(\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin representations $\rho$. We then prove the foliated component $\Omega_\rho^1$ of $\Omega_\rho$ has exactly two group-invariant foliations by properly embedded projective line segments and has a unique foliation by properly embedded convex domains in projective planes. This gives a finiteness counterpart to work of Guichard and Wienhard. We also prove analogues for the non-foliated component $\Omega_\rho^2$ and deduce a rigidity of projective equivalences of properly convex foliated projective structures on unit tangent bundles of surfaces.

This allows us to prove an analogue for pre-foliations of co-degree 1 and degree 3 of a result, obtained in collaboration with D. Marín, on foliations of degree 3 with non-degenerate singularities and a flat Legendre transform. We also show that the dual web of a reduced convex pre-foliation of co-degree 1 on is flat. This is an analogue of a result on foliations of due to D. Marín and J. V. Pereira.

Abstract:We present how to collapse a manifold equipped with a closed flat regular Riemannian foliation with leaves of positive dimension on a compact manifold, while keeping the sectional curvature uniformly bounded from above and below. From this deformation, we show that a closed flat regular Riemannian foliation with leaves of positive dimension on a compact simply-connected manifold is given by torus actions. This gives a geometric characterization of aspherical regular Riemannian foliations given by torus actions.

Abstract:We study codimension one (transversally oriented) foliations $\fa$ on oriented closed manifolds $M$ having non-empty compact singular set $\sing(\fa)$ which is locally defined by Bott-Morse functions. We prove that if the transverse type of $\fa$ at each singular point is a center and $\fa$ has a compact leaf with finite fundamental group or a component of $\sing(\fa)$ has codimension $\ge 3$ and finite fundamental group, then all leaves of $\fa$ are compact and diffeomorphic, $\sing(\fa)$ consists of two connected components, and there is a Bott-Morse function $f:M \to [0,1]$ such that $f\colon M \setminus \sing(\fa) \to (0,1)$ is a fiber bundle defining $\fa$ and $\sing(\fa) = f^{-1}(\{0,1\})$. This yields to a topological description of the type of leaves that appear in these foliations, and also the type of manifolds admiting such foliations. These results unify, and generalize, well known results for cohomogeneity one isometric actions and a theorem of Reeb for foliations with Morse singularities of center type. In this case each leaf of $\fa$ is a sphere fiber bundle over each component of $\sing(\fa)$.

Abstract:We study the existence of symplectic and conformal symplectic (codimension-1) foliations on closed manifolds of dimension . Our main theorem, based on a recent result by Bertelson–Meigniez, states that in dimension at least 7 any almost contact structure is homotopic to a conformal symplectic foliation. In dimension 5 we construct explicit conformal symplectic foliations on every closed, simply-connected, almost contact manifold, as well as honest symplectic foliations on a large subset of them. Lastly, via round-connected sums, we obtain, on closed manifolds, examples of conformal symplectic foliations which admit a linear deformation to contact structures.

Abstract:A holomorphic pre-foliation $\mathscr{F}=\mathcal{C}\boxtimes\mathcal{F}$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ is the data of a reduced complex projective curve $\mathcal{C}$ of $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ and a holomorphic foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$. When the foliation $\mathcal{F}$ is convex and the curve $\mathcal{C}$ is invariant by $\mathcal{F}$, we speak of convex pre-foliation. In a previous paper, we showed that if a foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ is reduced convex or homogeneous convex and if $\mathcal{C}$ is an invariant line of $\mathcal{F}$, then the dual web of the convex pre-foliation $\mathcal{C}\boxtimes\mathcal{F}$ is flat. In this paper, we propose to extend this result to the case of a curve $\mathcal{C}$ consisting of several invariant lines.
