Abstract:Strong correlations occur in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) when the octet of flat moiré minibands centered on charge neutrality (CN) is partially occupied. The octet consists of a single valence band and a single conduction band for each of four degenerate spin-valley flavors. Motivated by the importance of Hartree electrostatic interactions in determining the filling-factor dependent band structure, we use a time-dependent Hartree approximation to gain insight into electronic correlations. We find that the electronic compressibility is dominated by Hartree interactions, that paramagnetic states are stable over a range of density near CN, and that the dependence of energy on flavor polarization is strongly overestimated by mean-field theory.
Strongly Correlated Electrons
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the electron correlation problems in Magic - Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene (MATBG), especially within the framework of the weak - coupling theory. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Strong - correlation phenomena**: When the eight - fold degenerate flat bands of Magic - Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene are partially filled, the system exhibits strong - correlation effects. These flat bands consist of a single valence band and a single conduction band for each spin - valley flavor. The paper studies these electron - correlation effects through the time - dependent Hartree approximation. 2. **Electron compressibility**: The paper finds that the electron compressibility is mainly dominated by Hartree interactions, indicating that in Magic - Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene, the influence of electrostatic interactions on the band structure is very important. 3. **Stability of paramagnetic states**: In the density range close to the Charge Neutrality (CN), paramagnetic states are stable. This means that in these density ranges, the system will not spontaneously break symmetry. 4. **Dependence of energy on flavor polarization**: The paper points out that the mean - field theory overestimates the dependence of energy on flavor polarization. Through the RPA (Random Phase Approximation) method, the paper more accurately describes this dependence. 5. **Application of RPA theory**: The paper uses the RPA theory to study the dependence of the total band filling factor and the electron distribution between different spin - valley flavors in MATBG. The RPA theory can explain the linear increase trend of the chemical potential with the band filling factor observed in experiments. In summary, this paper attempts to gain a deep understanding of the electron - correlation effects in Magic - Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene through weak - coupling theories (such as RPA), especially how these effects affect the stability and energy dependence of the system.
