Abstract:Several complications arise when attempting to work with fusion categories over arbitrary fields. Here we describe some of the new phenomena that occur when the field is not algebraically closed, and we adapt tools such as the Frobenius-Perron dimension in order to accommodate these new effects.

Abstract:A tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$ is said to be invertible if there's a tensor category $\mathcal{D}$ such that $\mathcal{C}\boxtimes\mathcal{D}$ is Morita equivalent to $\mathrm{Vec}_{\mathbb{K}}$. When $\mathbb{K}$ is algebraically closed, it is well-known that the only invertible fusion category is $\mathrm{Vec}_{\mathbb{K}}$, and any invertible multi-fusion category is Morita equivalent to $\mathrm{Vec}_{\mathbb{K}}$. By contrast, we show that for general $\mathbb{K}$ the invertible multi-fusion categories over a field $\mathbb{K}$ are classified (up to Morita equivalence) by $H^3(\mathbb{K};\mathbb{G}_m)$, the third Galois cohomology of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{K}$. We explicitly construct a representative of each class that is fusion (but not split fusion) in the sense that the unit object is simple (but not split simple). One consequence of our results is that fusion categories with braided equivalent Drinfeld centers need not be Morita equivalent when this cohomology group is nontrivial.

The Fusion Categorical Diagonal

Abstract:We define a Frobenius algebra over fusion categories of the form Rep$(G)\boxtimes$Rep$(G)$ which generalizes the diagonal subgroup of $G\times G$. This allows us to extend field theoretical constructions which depend on the existence of a diagonal subgroup to non-invertible symmetries. We give explicit calculations for theories with Rep$(S_3)\boxtimes$Rep$(S_3)$ symmetry, applying the results to gauging topological quantum field theories which carry this non-invertible symmetry. Along the way, we also discuss how Morita equivalence is implemented for algebras in symmetry categories.

Abstract:We introduce fusion bialgebras and their duals and systematically study theirFourier analysis. As an application, we discover new efficient analyticobstructions on the unitary categorification of fusion rings. We prove theHausdorff-Young inequality, uncertainty principles for fusion bialgebras andtheir duals. We show that the Schur product property, Young's inequality andthe sum-set estimate hold for fusion bialgebras, but not always on their duals.If the fusion ring is the Grothendieck ring of a unitary fusion category, thenthese inequalities hold on the duals. Therefore, these inequalities areanalytic obstructions of categorification. We classify simple integral fusionrings of Frobenius type up to rank 8 and of Frobenius-Perron dimension lessthan 4080. We find 34 ones, 4 of which are group-like and 28 of which can beeliminated by applying the Schur product property on the dual. In general,these inequalities are obstructions to subfactorize fusion bialgebras.
Algebraic structures in group-theoretical fusion categories

Abstract:It was shown by Ostrik (2003) and Natale (2017) that a collection of twisted group algebras in a pointed fusion category serve as explicit Morita equivalence class representatives of indecomposable, separable algebras in such categories. We generalize this result by constructing explicit Morita equivalence class representatives of indecomposable, separable algebras in group-theoretical fusion categories. This is achieved by providing the free functor $\Phi$ from fusion category to a category of bimodules in the original category with a (Frobenius) monoidal structure. Our algebras of interest are then constructed as the image of twisted group algebras under $\Phi$. We also show that twisted group algebras admit the structure of Frobenius algebras in a pointed fusion category, and as a consequence, our algebras are Frobenius algebras in a group-theoretical fusion category. They also enjoy several good algebraic properties.

On the Dualizability of Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:Over an arbitrary field, we prove that the relative 2-Deligne tensor product of two separable module 2-categories over a compact semisimple tensor 2-category exists. This allows us to consider the Morita 4-category of compact semisimple tensor 2-categories, separable bimodule 2-categories, and their morphisms. Categorifying a result of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1312.7188" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.7188">arXiv:1312.7188</a>, we prove that separable compact semisimple tensor 2-categories are fully dualizable objects therein. In particular, it then follows from the main theorem of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2211.04917" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.04917">arXiv:2211.04917</a> that, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, every fusion 2-category is a fully dualizable object of the above Morita 4-category. We explain how this can be extended to any field of characteristic zero. Finally, we discuss the field theoretic interpretation of our results.

Rigid and Separable Algebras in Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:Rigid monoidal 1-categories are ubiquitous throughout quantum algebra and low-dimensional topology. We study a generalization of this notion, namely rigid algebras in an arbitrary monoidal 2-category. Examples of rigid algebras include $G$-graded fusion 1-categories, and $G$-crossed fusion 1-categories. We explore the properties of the 2-categories of modules and of bimodules over a rigid algebra, by giving a criterion for the existence of right and left adjoints. Then, we consider separable algebras, which are particularly well-behaved rigid algebras. Specifically, given a fusion 2-category, we prove that the 2-categories of modules and of bimodules over a separable algebra are finite semisimple. Finally, we define the dimension of a connected rigid algebra in a fusion 2-category, and prove that such an algebra is separable if and only if its dimension is non-zero.

Abstract:We use the string diagram calculus to give graphical proofs of the basic results of Etingof, Nikshych and Ostrik on fusion categories. These results include: the quadruple dual is canonically isomorphic to the identity, positivity of the paired dimensions, and Ocneanu rigidity. We introduce the pairing convention as a convenient graphical framework for working with fusion categories. We use this framework to express the pivotal operators as a product of the apex associator monodromy and the pivotal indicators. We also characterize pivotal structures as solutions of an explicit set of algebraic equations over the complex numbers.

Abstract:We abstract the study of irreducible characters of finite groups vanishing on all but two conjugacy classes, initiated by S. Gagola, to irreducible characters of fusion rings whose kernel has maximal rank. These near-integral fusion rings include the near-groups which are currently one of the most abundant sources of novel examples of fusion categories to date. We generalize many of the known results on near-group fusion categories from the literature to near-integral fusion categories and characterize when such categories are braided. In particular, braided near-integral fusion categories describe all braided fusion categories which are almost symmetrically braided. This novel result allows a digestible characterization of the over $300$ braided equivalence classes of premodular fusion categories of rank $6$ or less.

Abstract:We prove that the Drinfeld center of a fusion 2-category is invariant under Morita equivalence. We go on to show that the concept of Morita equivalence between connected fusion 2-categories recovers exactly the notion of Witt equivalence between braided fusion 1-categories. A strongly fusion 2-category is a fusion 2-category whose braided fusion 1-category of endomorphisms of the monoidal unit is $\mathbf{Vect}$ or $\mathbf{SVect}$. We prove that every fusion 2-category is Morita equivalent to the 2-Deligne tensor product of a strongly fusion 2-category and an invertible fusion 2-category. We proceed to show that every fusion 2-category is Morita equivalent to a connected fusion 2-category. As a consequence, we find that every rigid algebra in a fusion 2-category is separable. This implies in particular that every fusion 2-category is separable. Conjecturally, separability ensures that a fusion 2-category is 4-dualizable. We define the dimension of a fusion 2-category, and prove that it is always non-zero. Finally, we show that the Drinfeld center of any fusion 2-category is a finite semisimple 2-category.

Abstract:In this paper we prove an analogue of Brauer's theorem for faithful objects in fusion categories. Other notions, such as the order and the index associated to faithful objects of fusion categories are also discussed. We show that the index of a faithful simple object of a fusion categories coincides with the order of the universal grading group of the fusion category.

Abstract:We develop the Morita theory of fusion 2-categories. In order to do so, we begin by proving that the relative tensor product of modules over a separable algebra in a fusion 2-category exists. We use this result to construct the Morita 3-category of separable algebras in a fusion 2-category. Then, we go on to explain how module 2-categories form a 3-category. After that, we define separable module 2-categories over a fusion 2-category, and prove that the Morita 3-category of separable algebras is equivalent to the 3-category of separable module 2-categories. As a consequence, we show that the dual tensor 2-category with respect to a separable module 2-category, that is the associated 2-category of module 2-endofunctors, is a multifusion 2-category. Finally, we give three equivalent characterizations of Morita equivalence between fusion 2-categories.

Fusion modules and amenability of coideals of compact and discrete quantum groups

Abstract:We give a definition of an amenable fusion module over a fusion algebra. A notion of relative integrability for the `coduals' of coideals of compact quantum groups was recently introduced in the joint work of de Commer and Dzokou Talla. We use this property to construct an analogue of the quasi-regular representation. Then, we characterize a certain coamenability property of quasi-regular representations with amenability of their associated fusion modules. Afterwards, we obtain a duality result that generalizes Tomatsu's theorem for this coamenability property and an amenability property of their `codual' coideals (under an additional assumption). As an example, we apply this result to show the fusion modules associated to certain non-standard Podleś spheres are amenable.

Abstract:We introduce group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, a strong categorification of the notion of a group-theoretical fusion 1-category. Physically speaking, such fusion 2-categories arise by gauging subgroups of a global symmetry. We show that group-theoretical fusion 2-categories are completely characterized by the property that the braided fusion 1-category of endomorphisms of the monoidal unit is Tannakian. Then, we describe the underlying finite semisimple 2-category of group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, and, more generally, of certain 2-categories of bimodules. We also partially describe the fusion rules of group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, and investigate the group gradings of such fusion 2-categories. Using our previous results, we classify fusion 2-categories admitting a fiber 2-functor. Next, we study fusion 2-categories with a Tambara-Yamagami defect, that is $\mathbb{Z}/2$-graded fusion 2-categories whose non-trivially graded factor is $\mathbf{2Vect}$. We classify these fusion 2-categories, and examine more closely the more restrictive notion of Tambara-Yamagami fusion 2-categories. Throughout, we give many examples to illustrate our various results.

Abstract:We provide a parameterization of all fusion subcategories of the equivariantization by a group action on a fusion category. As applications, we classify the Hopf subalgebras of a family of semisimple Hopf algebras of Kac-Paljutkin type and recover Naidu-Nikshych-Witherspoon classification of the fusion subcategories of the representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group.

Abstract:We investigate the fusion of B-type interfaces in two-dimensional supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models. In particular, we propose to describe the fusion of an interface in terms of a fusion functor that acts on the category of modules of the underlying polynomial rings of chiral superfields. This uplift of a functor on the category of matrix factorisations simplifies the actual computation of interface fusion. Besides a brief discussion of minimal models, we illustrate the power of this approach in the SU(3)/U(2) Kazama-Suzuki model where we find fusion functors for a set of elementary topological defects from which all rational B-type topological defects can be generated.

Tambara-Yamagami Categories over the Reals: The Non-Split Case

Abstract:Tambara and Yamagami investigated a simple set of fusion rules with only one non-invertible object, and proved under which circumstances those rules could be given a coherent associator. We consider a generalization of such fusion rules to the setting where simple objects are no longer required to be split simple. Over the real numbers, this means that objects are either real, complex, or quaternionic. In this context, we prove a similar categorification result to the one of Tambara and Yamagami.

Abstract:A diverse collection of fusion categories may be realized by the representation theory of quantum groups. There is substantial literature where one will find detailed constructions of quantum groups, and proofs of the representation-theoretic properties these algebras possess. Here we will forego technical intricacy as a growing number of researchers study fusion categories disjoint from Lie theory, representation theory, and a laundry list of other obstacles to understanding the mostly combinatorial, geometric, and numerical descriptions of the examples of fusion categories arising from quantum groups. This expository piece aims to create a self-contained guide for researchers to study from a computational standpoint with only the prerequisite knowledge of fusion categories.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend a classical vanishing result of Burnside from the character tables of finite groups to the character tables of commutative fusion rings, or more generally to a certain class of abelian normalizable hypergroups. We also treat the dual vanishing result. We show that any nilpotent fusion categories satisfy both Burnside's property and its dual. Using Drinfeld's map, we obtain that the Grothendieck ring of any weakly-integral modular fusion category satisfies both properties. As applications, we prove new identities that hold in the Grothendieck ring of any weakly-integral fusion category satisfying the dual-Burnside's property, thus providing new categorification criteria. In particular, we improve [OY23, Theorem 4.5] as follows: A weakly integral modular fusion category of FPdim md with d square-free coprime with m and FPdim(X)^2 for every simple object X, has a pointed modular fusion subcategory of FPdim d. We also prove some new results on the perfect fusion categories.
