Abstract:This article presents iALC, an intuitionistic version of the classical description logic ALC, based on the framework for constructive modal logics presented by Simpson \cite{simpson95} and related to description languages, via hybrid logics, by dePaiva \cite{depaiva2003}. This article correcta and extends the presentation of iALC appearing in \cite{PHR:2010}. It points out the difference between iALC and the intuitionistic hybrid logic presented in \cite{depaiva2003}. Completeness and soundness proofs are provided. A brief discussion on the computacional complexity of iALC provability is taken. It is worth mentioning that iALC is used to formalize legal knowledge \cite{HPR:2010a,HPR:2010ab,Jurix, HPR:2011}, and in fact, was specifically designed to this goal.

An intuitionistically complete system of basic intuitionistic conditional logic

Abstract:We introduce a basic intuitionistic conditional logic $\mathsf{IntCK}$ that we show to be complete both relative to a special type of Kripke models and relative to a standard translation into first-order intuitionistic logic. We show that $\mathsf{IntCK}$ stands in a very natural relation to other similar logics, like the basic classical conditional logic $\mathsf{CK}$ and the basic intuitionistic modal logic $\mathsf{IK}$. As for the basic intuitionistic conditional logic $\mathsf{ICK}$ proposed by Y. Weiss, $\mathsf{IntCK}$ extends its language with a diamond-like conditional modality, but its diamond-conditional-free fragment is also a proper extension of $\mathsf{ICK}$. We briefly discuss the resulting gap between the two candidate systems of basic intuitionistic conditional logic and the possible pros and cons of both candidates.

Abstract:We develop a classical propositional logic for reasoning about combinatory logic. We define its syntax, axiomatic system and semantics. The syntax and axiomatic system are presented based on classical propositional logic, with typed combinatory terms as basic propositions, along with the semantics based on applicative structures extended with special elements corresponding to primitive combinators. Both the equational theory of untyped combinatory logic and the proposed axiomatic system are proved to be sound and complete w.r.t. the given semantics. In addition, we prove that combinatory logic is sound and complete w.r.t. the given semantics.

Abstract:Computational logic is the use of computers to establish facts in a logical formalism. Originating in nineteenth century attempts to understand the nature of mathematical reasoning, the subject now comprises a wide variety of formalisms, techniques and technologies. One strand of work follows the ‘logic for computable functions (LCF) approach’ pioneered by Robin Milner, where proofs can be constructed interactively or with the help of users’ code (which does not compromise correctness). A refinement of LCF, called Isabelle, retains these advantages while providing flexibility in the choice of logical formalism and much stronger automation. The main application of these techniques has been to prove the correctness of hardware and software systems, but increasingly researchers have been applying them to mathematics itself.

Abstract:The work is devoted to Computability Logic (CoL) -- the philosophical/mathematical platform and long-term project for redeveloping classical logic after replacing truth} by computability in its underlying semantics (see <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>). This article elaborates some basic complexity theory for the CoL framework. Then it proves soundness and completeness for the deductive system CL12 with respect to the semantics of CoL, including the version of the latter based on polynomial time computability instead of computability-in-principle. CL12 is a sequent calculus system, where the meaning of a sequent intuitively can be characterized as "the succedent is algorithmically reducible to the antecedent", and where formulas are built from predicate letters, function letters, variables, constants, identity, negation, parallel and choice connectives, and blind and choice quantifiers. A case is made that CL12 is an adequate logical basis for constructive applied theories, including complexity-oriented ones.

Abstract:This paper presents a soundness and completeness proof for propositional intuitionistic calculus with respect to the semantics of computability logic. The latter interprets formulas as interactive computational problems, formalized as games between a machine and its environment. Intuitionistic implication is understood as algorithmic reduction in the weakest possible -- and hence most natural -- sense, disjunction and conjunction as deterministic-choice combinations of problems (disjunction = machine's choice, conjunction = environment's choice), and "absurd" as a computational problem of universal strength. Abstract:We study the system IFP of intuitionistic fixed point logic, an extension of intuitionistic first-order logic by strictly positive inductive and coinductive definitions. We define a realizability interpretation of IFP and use it to extract computational content from proofs about abstract structures specified by arbitrary classically true disjunction free formulas. The interpretation is shown to be sound with respect to a domain-theoretic denotational semantics and a corresponding lazy operational semantics of a functional language for extracted programs. We also show how extracted programs can be translated into Haskell. As an application we extract a program converting the signed digit representation of real numbers to infinite Gray-code from a proof of inclusion of the corresponding coinductive predicates.

Reasoning about Intuitionistic Computation Tree Logic

Abstract:In this paper, we define an intuitionistic version of Computation Tree Logic. After explaining the semantic features of intuitionistic logic, we examine how these characteristics can be interesting for formal verification purposes. Subsequently, we define the syntax and semantics of our intuitionistic version of CTL and study some simple properties of the so obtained logic. We conclude by demonstrating that some fixed-point axioms of CTL are not valid in the intuitionistic version of CTL we have defined.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we define intensional models for the classical theory of types, thus arriving at an intensional type logic ITL. Intensional models generalize Henkin's general models and have a natural definition. As a class they do not validate the axiom of Extensionality. We give a cut-free sequent calculus for type theory and show completeness of this calculus with respect to the class of intensional models via a model existence theorem. After this we turn our attention to applications. Firstly, it is argued that, since ITL is truly intensional, it can be used to model ascriptions of propositional attitude without predicting logical omniscience . In order to illustrate this a small fragment of English is defined and provided with an ITL semantics. Secondly, it is shown that ITL models contain certain objects that can be identified with possible worlds . Essential elements of modal logic become available within classical type theory once the axiom of Extensionality is given up.

Abstract:The syntactic nature of logic and computation separates them from other fields of mathematics. Nevertheless, syntax has been the only way to adequately capture the dynamics of proofs and programs such as cut-elimination, and the finiteness and the atomicity of syntax are preferable for foundational aims as seen in Hilbert's program. Another issue is that a uniform basis for logic and computation has been missing, and this problem hampers a coherent view on them. For instance, formal proofs in proof theory are far from (ordinary) proofs of the validity of a formula in model theory. Our goal is to solve these fundamental problems by rebuilding central concepts in logic and computation such as formal systems, validity (in such a way that it coincides with the existence of proofs), cut-elimination and computability uniformly in terms of finite graphs based on game semantics. Unlike game semantics, however, we do not rely on anything infinite or extrinsic to the graphs. A key idea that enables our finitary, autonomous approach is the shift from graphs in game semantics to dynamic ones. The resulting combinatorics establishes a single, syntax-free, finitary framework that recasts formal systems admitting proofs with cuts, validity, the finest computational steps of cut-elimination and higher-order computability. This subsumes fully complete semantics of intuitionistic linear logic, which solves a problem open for thirty years, and even extends the full completeness to proofs with cuts. As a byproduct, our dynamic graphs give rise to Hopf algebras, which opens up new applications of algebras to logic and computation.

Abstract:We investigate the combination of fragments of classical logic as a way of conservatively extending a given Boolean logic by the addition of new connectives, and we precisely characterize the circumstances in which such a combination produces the corresponding fragment of classical logic over the signature containing connectives from both fragments given as input. If the thereby produced combined fragment is only incompletely characterized by the components given as input, this means that connectives from one component need to interact with connectives from the other component, giving rise to interaction principles. The main contributions strongly rely on the (well-known) description of the 2-valued clones made by Post, on the (not so well-known) axiomatization procedures for 2-valued matrices laid out by Rautenberg, and on Avron's non-deterministic matrices, which have (recently) been used to produce a significant advance on the understanding of the semantics of fibring.

Abstract:We explore a proof language for intuitionistic multiplicative additive linear logic, incorporating the sup connective that introduces additive pairs with a probabilistic elimination, and sum and scalar products within the proof-terms. We provide an abstract characterization of the language, revealing that any symmetric monoidal closed category with biproducts and a monomorphism from the semiring of scalars to the semiring Hom(I,I) is suitable for the job. Leveraging the binary biproducts, we define a weighted codiagonal map at the heart of the sup connective.

Abstract:Well-known principles of induction include monotone induction and different sorts of non-monotone induction such as inflationary induction, induction over well-founded sets and iterated induction. In this work, we define a logic formalizing induction over well-founded sets and monotone and iterated induction. Just as the principle of positive induction has been formalized in FO(LFP), and the principle of inflationary induction has been formalized in FO(IFP), this paper formalizes the principle of iterated induction in a new logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions (ID-logic). The semantics of the logic is strongly influenced by the well-founded semantics of logic programming. Our main result concerns the modularity properties of inductive definitions in ID-logic. Specifically, we formulate conditions under which a simultaneous definition $\D$ of several relations is logically equivalent to a conjunction of smaller definitions $\D_1 \land ... \land \D_n$ with disjoint sets of defined predicates. The difficulty of the result comes from the fact that predicates $P_i$ and $P_j$ defined in $\D_i$ and $\D_j$, respectively, may be mutually connected by simultaneous induction. Since logic programming and abductive logic programming under well-founded semantics are proper fragments of our logic, our modularity results are applicable there as well.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of extending the non-functionally complete logic of a collection of Boolean connectives by the addition of further Boolean connectives that make the resulting set of connectives functionally complete. More precisely, we will be interested in checking whether an axiomatization for Classical Propositional Logic may be produced by merging Hilbert-style calculi for two disjoint incomplete fragments of it. We will prove that the answer to that problem is a negative one, unless one of the components includes only top-like connectives.

A propositional cirquent calculus for computability logic

Abstract:Cirquent calculus is a proof system with inherent ability to account for sharing subcomponents in logical expressions. Within its framework, this article constructs an axiomatization CL18 of the basic propositional fragment of computability logic the game-semantically conceived logic of computational resources and tasks. The nonlogical atoms of this fragment represent arbitrary so called static games, and the connectives of its logical vocabulary are negation and the parallel and choice versions of conjunction and disjunction. The main technical result of the article is a proof of the soundness and completeness of CL18 with respect to the semantics of computability logic.

Abstract:This paper studies a combined system of intuitionistic and classical propositional logic from proof-theoretic viewpoints. Based on the semantic treatment of Humberstone (J Philos Log 8:171–196, 1979) and del Cerro and Herzig (Frontiers of combining systems: FroCoS, Springer, 1996), a sequent calculus is proposed. An approximate idea of obtaining is adding rules for classical implication on top of the intuitionistic multi-succedent sequent calculus by Maehara (Nagoya Math J 7:45–64, 1954). However, in the semantic treatment, some formulas do not satisfy heredity, which leads to the necessity of a restriction on the right rule for intuitionistic implication to keep the soundness of the calculus. The calculus enjoys cut elimination and Craig interpolation, whose detailed proofs are described in this paper. Cut elimination enables us to show the decidability of this combination both directly and syntactically. This paper also employs a canonical model argument to establish the strong completeness of Hilbert system proposed by del Cerro and Herzig (Frontiers of combining systems: FroCoS, Springer, 1996).

Abstract:Sub-sub-intuitionistic logic is obtained from intuitionistic logic by weakening the implication and removing distributivity. It can alternatively be viewed as conditional weak positive logic. We provide semantics for sub-sub-intuitionistic logic by means of semilattices with a selection function, prove a categorical duality for the algebraic semantics of the logic, and use this to derive completeness. We then consider the extension of sub-sub-intuitionistic logic with a variety of axioms.

Abstract:This paper presents rules of inference for a binary quantifier $I$ for the formalisation of sentences containing definite descriptions within intuitionist positive free logic. $I$ binds one variable and forms a formula from two formulas. $Ix[F, G]$ means `The $F$ is $G$'. The system is shown to have desirable proof-theoretic properties: it is proved that deductions in it can be brought into normal form. The discussion is rounded up by comparisons between the approach to the formalisation of definite descriptions recommended here and the more usual approach that uses a term-forming operator $\iota$, where $\iota xF$ means `the F'.

Abstract:This introduction begins with a section on fundamental notions of mathematical logic, including propositional logic, predicate or first-order logic, completeness, compactness, the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, Craig interpolation, Beth's definability theorem and Herbrand's theorem. It continues with a section on Gödel's incompleteness theorems, which includes a discussion of first-order arithmetic and primitive recursive functions. This is followed by three sections that are devoted, respectively, to proof theory (provably total recursive functions and Goodstein sequences for $\mathsf{I\Sigma}_1$), computability (fundamental notions and an analysis of Kőnig's lemma in terms of the low basis theorem) and model theory (ultraproducts, chains and the Ax-Grothendieck theorem). We conclude with some brief introductory remarks about set theory (with more details reserved for a separate lecture). The author uses these notes for a first logic course for undergraduates in mathematics, which consists of 28 lectures and 14 exercise sessions of 90 minutes each. In such a course, it may be necessary to omit some material, which is straightforward since all sections except for the first two are independent of each other.

Abstract:Building on our previous work on enriched universal algebra, we define a notion of enriched language consisting of function and relation symbols whose arities are objects of the base of enrichment. In this context, we construct atomic formulas and define the regular fragment of enriched logic by taking conjunctions and existential quantifications of those. We then characterize enriched categories of models of regular theories as enriched injectivity classes in the enriched category of structures. These notions rely on the choice of a factorization system on the base of enrichment which will be used to interpret relation symbols and existential quantifications.
