Abstract:Motivated by explosive releases of energy in fusion, space and astrophysical plasmas, we consider the nonlinear stability of stratified magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria against interchanges of straight magnetic-flux tubes. We demonstrate that in MHD (unlike in hydrodynamics) linear stability does not guarantee nonlinear stability, even in this simple case. We show that the minimum-energy configurations attainable by metastable equilibria under non-diffusive 2D dynamics can be determined by solving a combinatorial optimization problem. These minimum-energy states are, to good approximation, the final states reached by simulations of destabilized metastable equilibria where turbulent mixing is suppressed by viscosity. For the case of fully turbulent relaxation, we construct a statistical mechanical theory based on the maximization of Boltzmann's mixing entropy. This theory is analogous to the Lynden-Bell statistical mechanics of stellar systems and collisionless plasmas and to the Robert-Sommeria-Miller (RSM) theory of 2D vortex turbulence. Our theory reproduces well the results of our numerical simulations for sufficiently large perturbations to the metastable equilibrium.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the relationship between nonlinear stability and linear stability in stratified magnetohydrostatic equilibrium and their roles in the energy - release process. Specifically, the paper explores the nonlinear stability problem of the system when straight magnetic flux tubes are exchanged in the stratified magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system. The author points out that in the MHD system, linear stability does not guarantee nonlinear stability, even in the simple case of straight magnetic flux tube exchange. The paper further studies how these unstable states relax to new low - energy states after being perturbed, and proposes a method based on combinatorial optimization to determine these minimum - energy states. For the fully turbulent relaxation process, the author constructs a statistical mechanics theory based on the maximization of Boltzmann mixing entropy, similar to Lynden - Bell's theory for stellar systems and collisionless plasmas and Robert - Sommeria - Miller's theory for two - dimensional vortex turbulence. In general, the paper aims to solve the following key problems: 1. **Conditions for nonlinear instability**: In the stratified MHD system, under which conditions will there be a nonlinear - unstable explosive energy release? 2. **Mechanism of energy release**: How much energy will these unstable states release during the relaxation process? How is this energy released? 3. **Final state after relaxation**: What kind of final state will the system reach after relaxing from the unstable state? How is the energy distributed in these states? Through the study of these problems, the paper hopes to better understand the energy - release mechanism in the stratified MHD system, especially in the applications in the solar corona and fusion experiments.
